Le grimpeur écossais Robbie Philips, grand amateur de trad, a quitté dernièrement ses coinceurs le temps d’un voyage en Albanie afin de découvrir le potentiel minéral du pays. On se rappelle naturellement du trip de Seb Bouin, établissant il y a pile 2 ans la ligne la plus dure du pays avec la king line de 55 mètres “The Dream” 9b dans le canyon de Brar, équipée par un certain Adam Ondra.
Les falaises au caillou incroyable sont en effet légion ici, il y en a pour tous les niveaux… Voici un beau tour d’horizon dans la vidéo rétrospective ci-dessous avec aussi un appel pour sauver une vallée locale, Vjosa menacée de surexploitation. L’Albanie, la destination grimpe du futur ?

Scottish climber Robbie Philips left his friends the time to visit Albania in order to discover the potential here. We remember the first ascent of country’s first 9b by Seb Bouin, “The dream” in Brar Canyon, bolted by Adam Ondra. But amazing crags are around the corner…with a nice tour in the video below, and a call to save Vjosa valley, threaten by damming and exploitation.
“Climbing in Albania is the most exciting development in Sport Climbing in the last decade! I’ve been climbing in Kalymnos, Ceuse, and all over Catalunya, and Albania is just as good, if not better! There is so much still to be climbed and bolted out there – the potential seems endless!!! Video. En octobre dernier, Clément Lechaptois réalisait la première ascension du technico-physique “Solitary Daze” 8C tout en compression dans un gros dévers de Fionnay en Suisse. Ce bloc n’est autre que la directe de sortie d’un vieux problème de Dave Graham, “Permanent Midnight” 8A+, ouvert en 2006 dans une planche de 50°. Voici la vidéo du processus qui a conduit à la première ascension après 8 jours de travail. Les deux derniers mouvements durs sur des talons précaires ont l’air particulièrement torrides !

En parrallèle du projet de film de Cédric Lachat sur les grandes voies Suisses “Swissway to heaven”, un autre opus sur la voie extrême du Ratikon “WoGü” a été finalisé ce printemps par Mathieu Rivoire. Vous trouverez dans ce film un descriptif de chaque longueur de la voie, le témoignage de l’ouvreur, le légendaire Beat Kammerlander, des astuces techniques et tactiques et un suivi pas à pas des progressions des deux grimpeurs pro avec des images impressionnantes. Après un premier trip sur place au début de l’année, Brooke Raboutou empoche à nouveau un bloc dur avec le panneau très à doigts de “Trieste” 8B+. Ce classique de Red Rocks (Nevada, US) avait été ouvert par Paul Robinson en 2014, il est situé au secteur de First Creek Canyon. Il aura fallu 3 jours à Brooke lors de second séjour, empochant le bloc au dernier essai de la journée.

Cette dernière commente sur Instagram :
“Bon sang, cela fait du bien de rétablir en haut de ce bloc qui m’avait poussée dans mes retranchements au niveau physique et mental il y a un an. De retour, je me suis sentie plus forte, j’ai pu mettre les états d’âme et la pression de côté, contrairement au précédent séjour. J’adore me dépasser et me perfectionner pour ce genre de choses, c’est un processus que je veux continuer à entretenir. Au projet suivant !”

C’est déjà le 3ème 8B+ bloc de Brooke qui avait déjà réalisé “Muscle Car” et “Jade”. Et l’histoire n’est peut-être pas finie puisque le départ assis de “Trieste” (8C) est potentiellement dans son viseur…

After a first trip to the area at the beginning of 2021, Brooke Raboutou just completed one of the hard classics of Red Rocks, Nevada, with “Trieste” V14 opened by Paul Robinson in 2014. The boulder went down on her last try of the 3rd day. Brooke wrote on Instagram:

“Damn, it feels good to stand on top of a boulder that pushed my physical and mental limits a year ago. Coming back, I felt much stronger and was able to let go of expectations and lighten the pressure I put on myself the previous trip. The process of pushing myself and growing from it is one I will forever admire and continue to chase. Onto the next project!“

It’s her third V14, Brooke having already climbed “Muscle Car” and “Jade”. The story is maybe not finished because “Trieste” has a sit start in the 8C range which could be her next target. Wait and see…

En septembre dernier, Mathieu Bouyoud bouclait son super-projet de plusieurs années sur la falaise locale de La Balme de Yenne (Savoie) avec la première ascension de “Team Frisouille” 9a+. Après une ribambelle de voies dures à son actif, le falaisiste chambérien signait ici son second 9a+, perf rééditée il y a quelques semaines avec une répétition de “Papichulo” à Oliana. Avec ces deux réalisations majeures, Mathieu est assurément un des meilleurs performeurs français en milieu naturel en 2021. Voici une vidéo montrant les difficultés de “Team Frisouille”, qui offre 30 mètres hyper résistants et à doigts… Histoire d’appâter d’éventuels prétendants !

Last September, Mathieu Bouyoud completed his big multi-year project at his local crag of La Balme de Yenne (Savoie, France), with the first ascent of “Team Frisouille” 9a+. After a bunch of hard routes to his credit, the rock climber from Chambéry ticked his second 9a+ here, followed a few weeks ago with a repeat of “Papichulo” in Oliana. With these two major achievements, Mathieu is undoubtedly one of the best French rock climbers in 2021. Here is a video showing the difficulties of this 30-meter route, which is extremely sustained and fingery. Enjoy!

Le caillou espagnol est à l’honneur en ces temps gris et humides avec trois belles videos à la clé ! En octobre dernier, la grimpeuse espagnole Ana Belén Argudo signait la première féminine d’une voie historique de Cuenca, “El Cavario del Sicario” 8c. Equipée en 1992 par Julio Fernandez et libérée une année plus tard par ce dernier, puis immédiatement répétée par Dani Andrada et Stefan Glowacz, cette belle double casquette offre une escalade athlétique sur trous des plus fun !
C’est encore de l’escalade sur trous qu’on vous propose dans la seconde vidéo, avec Tom Bolger dans la première ascension de “Wild West” 9a/+ à Espadelles, Margalef, une voie qu’il avait libéré l’hiver dernier avec un pas de bloc brutal sur mono au départ avant une très résistante 2ème partie autour du 8c+.
Enfin, voici la vidéo non-coupée du run d’Alex Megos dans “King Capella” à Siurana, proposant d’infâmes arquées !

“What We Do In The Shadows”, que vient de libérer Robbie Phillips en fait désormais partie, avec une suggestion à E10 7A, ou 8c ! Le grimpeur pro Robbie Phillips a découvert cette voie à Duntelchaig dans les Highlands écossais après le premier confinement, mais n’était pas assez fort… Après un hiver de drame familial, d’entraînement et de confinement supplémentaire, il s’est préparé pour le projet et l’a réussi. Quelques minutes après, la légende écossaise Dave McLeod, avec qui il l’avait travaillée, réalisait d’ailleurs la première répétition.

There are only a handful of trad climbs in the world with climbing as difficult as 8c… “Cobra crack”, “Meltdown”, “Magic Line“, “Recovery drink”, “Lapoterapia”, maybe “Tribe”… “What We Do In The Shadows”, just freed by Robbie Phillips is one of them, with an E10 7A, or 8c suggestion! Robbie Phillips found this rock climb at Duntelchaig in the Scottish highlands after the first lockdown, but wasn’t strong enough… After a winter family loss and lockdown training on his home wall, he prepared himself for the project and sent it. A few minutes later, Scottish legend Dave McLeod, with whom he worked the line from the beginning, did the first repeat. Watch the video below!

L’article What We Do In The Shadows, nouvelle voie de trad extrême en Ecosse ! – What We Do In The Shadows, a new extreme Scottish trad line (+ video) est apparu en premier sur Fanatic Climbing.

L’américaine Isabelle Faus coche un nouveau 8B+/V14 avec la ligne “Shadow Walker” située sur le site de SwissCo dans le Colorado (USA). C’est la troisième ascension du bloc après celle de Charlie Barron en décembre 2020 puis celle de Jimmy Webb en juin dernier. Isabelle Faus réalise ainsi la première ascension féminine. La grimpeuse est une habituée de cette cotation puisque que “Shadow Walker” est son 7^ème bloc dans le 8B+/V14 avec pour dernier en date “Emasculator” durant l’été 2020. La vidéo de cette croix datant de cet été est visible dans la vidéo ci dessous compilant plusieurs de ses réalisations à SwissCo (8’11 pour “Shadow Walker”).

The American Isabelle Faus ticks a new 8B + / V14 with the “Shadow Walker” boulder located on the SwissCo site in Colorado (USA). This is the third ascent of the boulder after the one of Charlie Barron in December 2020 and the one of Jimmy Webb last June. Isabelle Faus thus realised the first female ascent. She is used to this grade since “Shadow Walker” is her 7th boudler in the 8B + / V14 grade, the 6th being “Emasculator” during the summer 2020. The video of the “Shadow Walker” ascent -she sent it this summer- can be seen in a compilation video with several Faus’ achievements at SwissCo (8’11 for “Shadow Walker“).

Pas mal après 4 ans seulement d’escalade ! Libéré en 1993 par Werner Thon, cette voie est une des classiques du niveau du fameux berceau allemand de l’escalade sportive. A visionner ci-dessous !

Dans un long article ce printemps, nous tentions de mettre en exergue l’importance de la préservation en escalade en milieu naturel. Le court-métrage “Les Emmerdeurs” traite de la cause écologique à travers du cas de l’emblématique falaise de Claret dans l’Hérault. Haut lieu de l’escalade sportive dans le Sud de la France dans les 90’s sous l’impulsion de grimpeurs locaux iconiques comme Lucien Berardini, Pierre Rouzo ou Hugues Beauzille, Claret n’en demeure pas moins, comme beaucoup d’autres sites, un refuge ornithologique et un havre de biodiversité. C’est à l’issue d’une concertation entre équipeurs locaux et naturalistes qu’il a été décidé de déséquiper tout un secteur situé à gauche de la falaise afin de permettre le survie de certaines espèces. In a long article this Spring, we tried to highlight the importance of environment preservation in rockclimbing. The short film “Les Emmerdeurs” deals with the ecological cause through the case of the emblematic crag of Claret in Hérault. High place of sportclimbing in the South of France in the 90’s with iconic local climbers like Lucien Berardini, Pierre Rouzo or Hugues Beauzille, Claret is like many other climbing places a refuge for birds and a haven of biodiversity. After a consultation between local climbers and naturalists the decision was taken to take off the bolts in an entire sector located to the left of the cliff in order to allow the survival of certain species. Créée et libérée en 2009, “Orbayu”, la grande-voie la plus célèbre et dure du massif des Picos de Europa (Cantabrie, Espagne) a en tout et pour tout vu 7 ascensions : par les équipeurs (les frères Pou), Nico Favresse, Cédric Lachat, Edu Marin, Gorka Karapeto et Siebe Vanhee.

Les frères Pou ont imaginé quatre nouvelles longueurs de départ pour ensuite rejoindre “Mediterraneo” pour une cotation globale donnée à 8c, puis recalée à 8b+ par le premier répétiteur, Nico Favresse.

Plusieurs des longueurs étaient déjà passées en A3, dont celle en 8c, avec des protections d’origine bien âgées, sans parler de la “mentalité Rätikon” adoptée par les frangins, qui distille des chutes de 20 à 25m.

Le grimpeur autrichien Mich Kemeter, passionné de grandes-voies, highline, base-jump et solo, a voulu ajouter son nom à la liste. Et c’est partie remise. 3 choses principales ressortent de cette vidéo, hormis la beauté des images de Xavier Coll. Primo, les décotes fréquentes des longueurs (L3 8a devient par exemple 7b). Deuzio, la critique de Mich sur la dégradation du rocher, assez floue : on ne sait pas s’il était au courant du passé A3 de certaines longueurs, ou si de nouvelles ascensions en artif ont aggravé sa qualité. Tertio, l’ouverture par l’Autrichien d’une sortie directe dure (non libérée) du 8c, sur rocher vierge, nommée “Natural Orbayu”.

Si certaines questions restent en suspens, nous saluons pour notre part le partage d’une vidéo sur un “échec”, face cachée de l’escalade sportive bien souvent mise dans l’ombre par les grimpeurs pros.

Bolted and freed in 2009, “Orbayu”, the most famous and hard multipitch route in Picos de Europa (Cantabria, Spain) has only seen 7 ascents: by its creators (the Pou brothers), Nico Favresse, Cédric Lachat, Edu Marin, Gorka Karapeto and Siebe Vanhee.

The Pou brothers imagined 4 pitches to start and meet “Mediterraneo” for an overall grade of 8c, which the first repeater Nico Favresse downgraded to 8b+.

Several of the pitches had gone down as A3 climbing before, including the 8c crux pitch, meaning old pro, before even mentioning the “Rätikon spirit” adopted by the brothers, with 20 to 25m falls.

Austrian climber Mich Kemeter, a fanatic of multipitch routes, highline, base jumping and free solo, wanted to add his name to the list. To no avail. 3 things particularly grabbed our attention in this video, beyond Xavier Coll‘s beautiful images. First, his frequent downgrades of the pitches, P3 going from 8a to 7b for instance. Second, Mich‘s criticism of the damage to the rock, rather unclear: did he not know of the A3 past of some of the pitches, or have new aid ascents deteriorated the face further in the recent past? Third, the opening of a new direct hard exit to the 8c pitch, on pristine rock, which he named “Natural Orbayu”.

If some questions remain unanswered, for our part we salute the release of a video telling the story of a “failure”, the hidden face of sport climbing that is too often pushed under the carpet.

Le top bloqueur américain Matt Fultz a réalisé un mois de février 2021 prolifique à Red Rocks dans le Colorado, avec une bonne partie des classiques dures du site en poche. Ainsi Matt a réalisé en quelques jours “Sleepwalker” (8C+), “Squoze” (8B+), “Trieste sit” (8B+) et “The Nest” (8C). Compte-rendu en video ci-dessous en guise de souvenir.

On vous a déjà parlé de Tom Bolger, ce fanatique britannique expatrié en Catalogne depuis une bonne décennie. Déjà très actif il y a quelques années du côté de Santa Linya, Tom écume depuis plusieurs années aussi Margalef, répétant des voies dures et équipant aussi des trucs particulièrement extrêmes. Dans la video qui suit, en plus de travailler la Kingline “Perfecto Mundo”, Tom présente une nouvelle ligne voisine équipée par ses soins à Raco de La Finestra à la difficulté inouïe , un projet ultime qui pourrait rivaliser avec l’effort de “Perfecto Mundo” selon ses dires… Après une première partie autour du 9a/+ (“The Jouney”), Tom doit se frapper un pas de bloc sommital extrême qu’il ne semble pas parvenir encore à faire, alors que quand il essaie le crux de “Perfecto Mundo” estimé aux alentours du 8A bloc il y arrive quasi systématiquement… A continuer…Attention, doigts fragiles s’abstenir !

We have already written some articles about Tom Bolger’s developments, this British fanatic who has been living in Catalunya for years. Already very active a few years ago around Santa Linya, Tom is now the most active in Margalef, repeating hard routes and also bolting extreme lines. In the following video, in addition to the on “Perfecto Mundo”, Tom presents a new neighboring line bolted by himself at Raco de La Finestra showing an incredible intensity, an ultimate project that could rival the effort of “Perfecto Mundo” according to his thoughts! After a first part in the 9a/+ range (“The Jouney”), Tom is struggling with an extreme top boulder. It seems he’s not be able yet to complete it, whereas when he’s trying the crux of “Perfecto Mundo” estimated at an 8A boulder problem he can stick it almost systematically … To be continued … Fragile fingers don’t watch this insane vid!

Une news pour une 5ème ascension? Non, une news pour une jolie voie à l’histoire intéressante, Empath, à l’occasion de la sortie de la video de Keenan Takahashi. En octobre 2020, Carlo Traversi signait la première de cette ligne de granite inhabituelle de Tahoe, USA, et la cotait 5.15a (9a+). Quelques jours plus tard, le reste de l’équipe en faisait de même, Jimmy Webb (qui avait repéré la ligne) chipant la première répétition à Daniel Woods (3ème ascension).

Les colonnettes et fissures plus ou moins fuyantes de Empath ont ensuite attisé la curiosité des Wide Boyz (Pete Whittaker et Tom Randall) qui dans une vidéo se demandaient si des techniques de fissure ne permettraient pas de simplifier une méthode d’origine assez contraignante. On se souvient que Pete avait déjà essayé de sortir le crux de Silence (V15) avec des méthodes de fissure.

Alors que Nathaniel Coleman faisait le siège d’Empath en préparation des JO (4ème), au printemps de cette année Keenan se mit en tête d’apporter son nom à la liste des croiteurs, travaillant la voie avec Paige Claassen et Pablo Hammack, et empochait la cinquième ascension en mai. On peut les voir à l’oeuvre dans cette video juste sortie du four:

Empath a la cote, et elle a de quoi. Ethan Pringle s’y colle et clippe le relais la veille de la septième par un ado de 17 ans, Connor Herson, lequel partage les idées des Wide Boyz. Sortant l’arsenal des meilleurs trad-eurs, le jeunot plie la voie en 5 essais seulement, et sans genouillères, gants ni bande.

Herson ne s’est pas prononcé sur la difficulté de cette belle ligne, mais Pringle oui, qui propose une petite décote à 5.14+ (9a). Et apparemment personne n’a crié au scandale, ce qui est rafraichissant.

A piece of news for a 5th ascent? No, but for a lovely route with an interesting story, Empath, on the occasion of Keenan Takahashi‘s send video. In October 2020, Carlo Traversi claimed the first ascent of this line on unusual granite in Tahoe, USA, and graded it 5.15a (9a+). A few days later, the rest of the crew followed in his footsteps with Jimmy Webb (who had spotted the line) taking the first repetition off of Daniel Woods (3rd).

The tufas and flaring cracks of Empath then piqued the curiosity of the Wide Boyz (Pete Whittaker and Tom Randall) who in a video explicitly wondered if crack techniques could be used to simplify the rather taxing original beta. You will remember that Pete had already tried to complete the V15 crux of Silence this way.

While Nathaniel Coleman laid siege on Empath as training for the Olympics (4th), in the Spring of this year Keenan decided to add his name to the list of ascensionists, working it along with Paige Claassen and Pablo Hammack. He made the 5th ascent in May, and we can see them at work in the just-released video above.

Empath is in vogue, it’s understandable. Ethan Pringle is next in line and clips the chains (6th) the day before a 17 year-old teenager, Connor Herson, follows suit. Sharing the same ideas as the Wide Boyz, Connor used trad climbing techniques to send the route in 5 teeny attempts, without kneepads, cloves or tape at that.

Herson did not comment on the grade but Pringle did, and proposed a slight downgrade to 5.14+ (9a). Apparently no one has cried foul yet, which is refreshing.

On vous présente le teaser des “Emmerdeurs”, ou “Comment concilier l’escalade en milieu naturel et la protection de la biodiversité ? Comment pratiquer sa passion en respectant le sauvage et la nature ?” Alors que la crise de la biodiversité ne fait que s’aggraver, le film “Les emmerdeurs” témoigne des réponses apportées à ces questions par une communauté de grimpeurs et d’écologistes capables de se comprendre et d’agir ensemble.
Réalisé par Raphaël FOURAU et produit par France Nature Environnement Languedoc Roussillon et le CT 34 de la FFME, ce documentaire sera disponible sur les plateformes numériques le 15 novembre !

En mai dernier, Claudia Ghisolfi (25 ans), la petite sœur de Stefano Ghisolfi, réussissait son premier 8c+ avec la voie historique “Noia” à Andonno, dont l’ascension fait l’objet d’un volet des “Climbing Diaries” de son frère. Du coup, cette première ne vient pas seule: c’est aussi la première fois que la chaine Youtube de Stefano se consacre à quelqu’un d’autre que lui (il en rit lui-même)! Il s’agit d’une voie très importante de la péninsule : le premier 8c+ italien libéré par Severino Scassa en février 1993 ! Suivez cette video sur Claudia dans les 65 mouvements de pure résistance de “Noia”, une voie qu’elle a bossée pendant toute la période hivernale, avec un processus débuté à l’automne 2020.

Last May Claudia Ghisolfi (25 years old), the sister of Stefano Ghisolfi, managed to send her first 8c+ with the historical route “Noia” in Andonno: check the video that her brother has made of it as part of his “Climbing Diaries”. It is therefore a first in more ways than one: it is indeed the first time that Stefano dedicates an episode of his Youtube channel to someone other than himself (a fact he laughs at himself). This is a very important route for the peninsula: the first Italian 8c+, first ascended by Severino Scassa in February 1993! Follow Claudia in the 65 movements of power resistance that is “Noia”, a route she has worked on during the last winter period, having started the process in the fall of 2020.

Découvrez en video “The Path“, 5.14R, une des voies de trad les plus mythiques du Canada située à Lake Louise (Banff National Park) grâce à Simon Yamamoto et Dexter Bateman qui ont répété dernièrement la voie. La voie raye une impressionnante face sur près de 40 m de long, avec une première partie facile, un repos sans les mains, et une longue section dure marquée par des sections très engagées où il ne vaut mieux pas tomber !

Discover “The Path” 5.14R in video, one of the most mythical trad route located in Lake Louise, Canada (Banff National Park) thanks to Simon Yamamoto and Dexter Bateman who recently repeat the route. The route is in the middle of an impressive 40 m face with some hard and commited sections with massive run-outs after an easy part.

Voici ci-dessous le trailer du film à venir sur la réalisation de la première ascension de “Soudain Seul” aka “The Big Island assis” (8C+/9A) par le belge Simon Lorenzi. Le cinéaste belge Gilles Charlier a suivi Simon durant de longues semaines l’hiver dernier à Fontainebleau dans sa quête du Graal : être le premier à réaliser un des projets les plus mythiques de la forêt de Fontainebleau. Afin de finaliser la production du film, une campagne de financement a été lancée. Petite rectification par rapport à ce qui est énoncé dans la bande-annonce, c’est bien Vincent Pochon qui a fait la première ascension du debout et logique du bloc, Dave Graham ayant précédemment ouvert “The Island” une version en 8B+ proposant un départ des plus bizarres, une version raccourcie maintenant tombée dans l’oubli.

Here is the trailer of upcoming film about the first ascent of “Soudain Seul” aka “The Big Island sit” (V16/17) by Belgian top climber Simon Lorenzi. Belgian Filmmaker Gilles Charlier followed Simon during some weeks last WInter during his quest : freeing one of the most iconic project of Font forest. A crowdfunding campaign is launched for finishing the movie. Small rectification compared to what is stated in the trailer, it’s indeed Vincent Pochon who made the first ascent of the stand start and logical boulder, Dave Graham having previously opened “The Island” an awkward 8B+ version offering a start most bizarre, a short version of the boulder now forgotten…
