La grimpeuse californienne et influenceuse sociale vivant en Grande-Bretagne Anna Hazlett (Anna Hazelnutt sur YouTube et les réseaux sociaux) vient de réaliser la voie de trad classique sur la falaise côtière de Dyer’s lookout, dans le Nord du Devon (Cornouailles), “The Walk of Life (E9 6c). Cette face impressionnante, lisse et technique a été ouverte par James Pearson en 2008 avec de bons caramels à la clé en cas de chute (cf vidéo de James Pearson ci-dessous). Une perf impressionnante pour Anna qui déteste tomber, mais qui adore la dalle, avec une première féminine à la clé ! Ce n’est pas son premier coup en trad ici, car cet automne Anna avait déjà réalisé “Once Upon a time in the SouthWest” (E9 6c) sur la même falaise, qui est la voisine de gauche. Ambiance à apprécier dans la vidéo ci-dessous. Anna a déjà réalisé son premier 8b+ en escalade sportive avec “Galactic Emperor” à Ten Sleep (Wyoming) l’été dernier. Une belle progression à suivre !
Anna Hazlett, climber and social influencer from California (living in UK, Anna Hazelnutt on IG or YT) just repeated the mega classic “The Walk of Life” E9 6c located at Dyer’s Lookout, Nothern Devon. This impressive face has been first ascended by James Pearson in 2008 with some big whippers before (watch the video below!). A big feat for Anna who doesn’t like to fall, but who is fond of slab climbing, and a first female ascent under her belt! It’s not Anna’s first E9. She climbed the neighbouring route on the left of “Walk of Life” last September, “Once Upon a Time in the SouthWest”, the video is just above. She also did her first sportclimbing 5.14 last summer with “Galactic Emperor” in Ten Sleep, Wyoming. A nice progression, to be continued!
“En 2006 j’ai gravi le premier E11, ‘Rhapsody’. 15 ans plus tard je me demandais si je pouvais toujours réaliser ce niveau, du coup je me suis mis à essayer la voie de Neil Gresham “Lexicon”.” Voici la démarche qui a conduit le vétéran anglais Dave MacLeod (43 ans) à soigner un tennis elbow récurrent et à s’entrainer pour réaliser la 3ème ascension de “Lexicon” en mars dernier, la nouvelle voie trad extrême de Grande-Bretagne ouverte par Neil Gresham en septembre dernier à Pavey Ark, dans le Lake District. Un autre vétéran britannique avait réalisé la seconde ascension dans la foulée, en la personne de l’expérimenté Steve McClure. Il y a quelques semaines, une jeune pousse de 24 ans, Mat Wright, a coché la 4ème ascension de cette voie décidément populaire, et il entend justement s’attaquer à “Rhapsody” cet été.

‘In 2006 I clipped the chains of an E11 myself, ‘Rhapsody’. 15-odd years later, I was wondering if I could still climb at this level.’ That is the line of thinking that decided ‘veteran’ climber Dave MacLeod (43) to treat a niggling tennis elbow by training to bag the 3rd ascent of ‘Lexicon’ in March of this year. The new E11 7a was opened by Neil Gresham in September 2021 at Pavey Ark, Lake District. Another senior Brit got the second ascent soon after (none other than Steve McClure), but a few weeks ago a decidedly underage Mat Wright (24 only!!!) got himself the 4th ascent of this popular line, and intends to spend some time on ‘Rhapsody’ this summer.
Eder Lomba Lopez de Ipiña , grimpeur basque habitant à Sheffield, vient de réaliser la seconde ascension de “Rainman” 9b à Malham Cove. Considérée comme la voie sportive la plus dure d’Angleterre et libérée en 2017 par Steve McClure, “Rainman” connecte les parties dures de deux 9a que Eder avait déjà réalisés auparavant, “Rainshadow” et “Batman” avant de finir dans “Bat Route”. Sur 8a.nu, Eder estime à 46 jours le nombre de séances de travail avant de répéter la voie qui était restée invaincue en 5 ans, sans compter les 30 séances nécessaires pour réaliser les 9a auparavant, soit un véritable siège ! Basque country climber Eder Lomba Lopez de Ipiña, who lives in Sheffield, just claimed the second ascent of “Rainman” 9b, Malham Cove. Freed by Steve McClure in 2017, this line is considered to be the hardest sportclimbing route in the UK. “Rainman” is a link between the hardest part of “Rainshadow” and “Batman” (both 9a and both previously climbed by Eder) before finishing in “Bat route” 8c. According to 8a.nu, Eder spent 46 days working this unrepeated route, after having spent 30 days on the 9a before… Quite the siege! here is the uncut video of the ascent!

Inoxydables ! Malgré les années, certains pionniers du bloc maintenant quadras sont toujours particulièrement actifs, avec de récents développements.
A Bleau, Olivier Lebreton, 45 ans, récent champion de France vétéran de bloc, tient toujours la grande forme. En ce début d’année 2022 Olivier vient de concrétiser deux projets qu’il avait parmi les blocs majeurs de la forêt, “Partage assis” 8B à Buthiers et “The Big Island” 8B+/C au Coquibus Rumont. Les deux réalisations sont présentées dans la vidéo ci-dessous.
Dave Graham, 40 ans, passe lui la saison hivernale en Suisse sur les blocs du Tessin avec une répétition du méga highball “Roadkill” 8C à Val Bavona juste avant Noël, une double croix avec notre frenchie Clément Lechaptois. Ce gros pavé ouvert en 2020 par Shawn Raboutou avait déjà vu précédemment des répétitions de Jimmy Webb et Kim Marschner. Dave (qu’on peut considérer comme un des acteurs majeurs du développement de l’escalade sportive US ces 20 dernières années avec Chris Sharma) semble toujours au sommet de son art. D’autres quadras, plus discrets serrent encore fort les prises… En Grande-Bretagne, Dave McLeod 43 ans, est de retour aux affaires après une blessure au coude. Dave vient de réaliser la seconde ascension de “Below zero” 8B+ à Rooftown, un projet qu’il avait depuis de longs mois et dont il s’est fait piquer la première par Will Bosi. Le processus de travail du bloc est décrit dans la vidéo ci-dessous.
Plus à L’Est, Bernd Zangerl est toujours à fond dans l’extrême, bossant dernièrement sur un projet vieux d’une décennie…Tout comme Klem Loskot, qui, aux dernières nouvelles, est toujours très actif bien qu’il soit silencieux sur les réseaux.
Evidemment traiter du sujet sans évoquer Dai Koyamada serait une erreur. Depuis la casse intentionnelle des prises de son 8C+ “Nayuta” au Japon en 2018 ainsi que de certains autres de ses projets et premières ascensions, le pionnier du bloc nippon, 45 ans, se fait plus discret concernant ses ouvertures. Dai a quand même réalisé plus d’une dizaine de premières ascensions de bloc dans le 8ème degré en 2021, et développe en concertation avec le gouvernement local plein de nouveaux blocs dans la zone très vaste d’Hinokage (à Kyushu, au Sud de l’Archipel) là où se trouve déjà “Eternal” qu’il avait établi en 2013. Il s’y trouve un potentiel de blocs durs encore très important, peut-être là où se trouve le futur du bloc naturel au Japon. A suivre !
Unstoppables! Despite the years, some bouldering pioneers now in their forties are still particularly active with recent developments.
In Font, Olivier Lebreton, 45, recent veteran French bouldering champion is still in great shape. This beginning of the year 2022 Olivier has just completed two projects he had among the major boulders of the forest, “Partage assis” 8B at Buthiers and “The Big Island” 8B+/C at the Coquibus Rumont. Dave Graham, 40 years old, is spending all his winter in Switzerland on the boulders of Ticino with a repeat of the “Roadkill” 8C mega highball in Val Bavona just before Christmas, a double send with our Frenchie Clément Lechaptois. This big pice of rock was opened in 2020 by Shawn Raboutou and had previously seen repeats by Jimmy Webb and Kim Marschner. Dave, who can be considered one of the major actors in the development of US sportclimbing over the past 20 years with Chris Sharma, always seems to be at the top of his game. Other climbers in their forties, more discreet, are still strong. In Great-Britain, 43-year-old Dave McLeod is back to affairs after an elbow injury. Dave just completed the second ascent of “Below zero” 8B+ at Rooftown, a project he had for many months. The first ascent of this line was stolen recently by Will Bosi. Dave’s process on this boulder is described in the video above too.
Further East, Bernd Zangerl is still climbing hard, lately working on a decade-old project…just like Klem Loskot, who, according to the latest news, is still very active in bouldering despite being silent on social media.
Obviously, dealing with this subject without mentioning Dai Koyamada would be a mistake! Since the intentional brake of the holds of his 8C+ “Nayuta” in Japan in 2018 as well as some of his other projects and first ascents, the 45-year-old Japanese bouldering pioneer has been more discreet about his developements. Dai has still made more than a dozen of bouldering first ascents in the 8th degree in 2021, and is developing in consultation with the local government many new boulders in the very large area of Hinokage (in Kyushu, South of Japan) where is already “Eternal” which he established in 2013. Here is still very important hard bouldering potential, perhaps where the future of outdoor bouldering in Japan is…To be continued !

“What We Do In The Shadows”, que vient de libérer Robbie Phillips en fait désormais partie, avec une suggestion à E10 7A, ou 8c ! Le grimpeur pro Robbie Phillips a découvert cette voie à Duntelchaig dans les Highlands écossais après le premier confinement, mais n’était pas assez fort… Après un hiver de drame familial, d’entraînement et de confinement supplémentaire, il s’est préparé pour le projet et l’a réussi. Quelques minutes après, la légende écossaise Dave McLeod, avec qui il l’avait travaillée, réalisait d’ailleurs la première répétition. Toutes les infos sur cette ouverture dans la vidéo ci-dessous!
There are only a handful of trad climbs in the world with climbing as difficult as 8c… “Cobra crack”, “Meltdown”, “Magic Line“, “Recovery drink”, “Lapoterapia”, maybe “Tribe”… “What We Do In The Shadows”, just freed by Robbie Phillips is one of them, with an E10 7A, or 8c suggestion! Robbie Phillips found this rock climb at Duntelchaig in the Scottish highlands after the first lockdown, but wasn’t strong enough… After a winter family loss and lockdown training on his home wall, he prepared himself for the project and sent it. A few minutes later, Scottish legend Dave McLeod, with whom he worked the line from the beginning, did the first repeat. Watch the video below!
En novembre 2020 une voie extrême “préhistorique” voyait ses premières répétitions: “Akira”, par Seb Bouin et Lucien Martinez, alors qu’elle prenait la poussière depuis un quart de siècle. Un an plus tard, de l’autre côté du Brexit l’Écossais Will Bosi sortait le plumeau pour une autre voie bien ridée, libérée par Steve McClure un peu avant sa naissance il y a 23 ans : “Mutation“.
Ce qui est vrai de l’une est, mutatis mutandis, vrai de l’autre : deux voies vraiment dures mais pour des raisons différentes, et surtout enfantées par des pères bien distincts. “Akira” connaîtra une décote sévère, de 9b à 9a, alors que Will Bosi propose 9a+ au lieu de 9a pour “Mutation”, avouant dans le même souffle que si d’aventure un répétiteur futur suggérait 9b, il ne s’en étoufferait pas.
“Mutation” consiste en une extension d'”Evolution”, un 8c ouvert par Jerry Moffat en 1995 et recoté 8c+ depuis. Loin du profil d'”Akira” ou des voies répétées ou libérées par Bosi en Espagne en début d’année, “Mutation” est peu déversante et sa difficulté première vient de la taille misérable des réglettes, entre 6 à 8mm, notamment dans la partie haute où leurs formes biscornues demandent une précision chirurgicale. On peut le constater ici:
Sharma, Megos et Ondra l’ont tous essayée, en vain. Certainement ces monstres de l’escalade n’y ont pas passé les 4 années investies par Bosi, mais le carnet de visite a tout de même de la gueule.
Face à cette engeance, Will Bosi pourrait sembler sorti de nulle part. Toutefois Bosi, compétiteur expérimenté, fait depuis plusieurs années parler la poudre en extérieur outre-Manche. “Rainshadow” en 8 sessions à 17 ans; “Hubble” en 6 pour ses 18 printemps ; plus jeune britannique dans le 9a et le 9b (avec “La Capella” en 2020), et ouvreur de “King Capella” qu’il soumet à 9b+. Le bloc naturel n’est pas en reste: Bosi vient d’enchainer “Foundation’s Edge” 8C en deux petites heures, et espère rapidement se tester sur un 8C+ de référence.
D’une réserve et d’une modestie toutes British, peu enclin au star system, sa cotation de “King Capella” reste naturellement à confirmer, tout comme celle de “Mutation”, mais il est fort à parier que si erreur il y a, elle aura au moins été honnête.

A year later, on the other side of Brexit the Scot Will Bosi got his own duster out for another tough oldie, freed just before his birth 23 years ago by Steve McClure: “Mutation“.
What is true of one is, mutatis mutandis, true of the other: two very hard routes but for different reasons, and also brought into this world by two very distinct fathers. “Akira” would meet with a very sharp downgrade, from 9b to 9a, whereas Will Bosi is suggesting 9a+ instead of the original 9a. He also admitted that if a repeater was to announce 9b, he wouldn’t be overly surprised.
“Mutation” is an extension of “Evolution”, a Jerry Moffat 8c opened in 1995, but upgraded to 8c+ since. Far from the profile of “Akira” or even the extreme routes repeated and opened by Will in Spain earlier this year, “Mutation” is not very overhanging and its primary difficulty consists in the thinness of the crimps, between 6 and 8mm, especially in the upper section where their broken-up shapes require surgical accuracy, as can be seen in the video above.
Sharma, Megos and Ondra have all tried it, in vain. Sure, these climbing demi-gods haven’t spent 4 years on it like Bosi, but the visitor’s book is not too shabby all the same.
Comparatively, Will Bosi could seem the odd-one-out. But Bosi, an experienced competitor already, has been tearing it up outdoors for a while across the Channel. “Rainshadow” in 8 sessions aged 17; “Hubble” in 6 a year later; youngest Brit at 9a and 9b (“La Capella” in 2020), and the first to propose 9b+ for his FA of “King Capella”. Not that Bosi shies away from outdoor bouldering either: he has just topped “Foundation’s Edge” 8C in two miserly hours, and hopes to quickly test himself on a reference 8C+.
With his all so British reserve and modesty, seemingly uninterested in the star system, his grading of “King Capella” is of course yet to be confirmed, as is his proposition for “Mutation”, but it’s safe to say that if he is mistaken, it will be an honest mistake.
Neil Gresham, du haut de ses jeunes 50 printemps, vient d’enchainer son projet, “Lexicon” E11 à Pavey Park, Angleterre. Ce grimpeur très complet (trad, escalade sportive, casacade de glace) et expérimenté est une référence en entrainement Outre-Manche. Il réalise ici son premier E11, après deux E10 (en 2001 il a réalisé la seconde ascension de “Equilibrium”, et en 2020 la première de “Final Score”). “Lexicon” est considéré d’une difficulté avoisinant le 8b+. Son crux sommital, environ 7C bloc, peut se solder par une chute de près de 30m et une réception “assez” violente sur le mur du départ…
Dans ce fascinant entretien sur UKC, Gresham décrit sa stratégie d’entrainement pour la voie (comparable à celle de Ondra pour “Silence” en ce qui concerne la multidisciplinarité), ses chutes de test dans la partie haute ainsi que la cotation, clairement pas prise à la légère.
En attendant une répétition, “Lexicon” se place comme une des propositions le plus difficiles en trad du Royaume-Uni au même titre que “Rhapsody” ! Pas mal pour un vétéran !
Neil Gresham, 50 years young, has just sent his project, “Lexicon” E11 at Pavey Park, England. It is his first E11, after two E10 (2001 for the second ascent of “Equilibrium”, and 2020 for the first ascent of “Final Score”). Lexicon consists in an 8b+ with a top crux, in the V9 range, that can lead to an 80 foot fall, added to a not so gentle slam into the starting wall.
In this fascinating interview for UKC, Gresham talks generously about his training strategies for the route (comparable to Ondra’s for “Silence” when it comes to multidisciplinarity) his test falls at the top as well as the grade, which he clearly thought a lot about.
Waiting for a repeat, “Lexicon” is one of the hardest trad climbing propositions of Great-Britain like “Rhapsdoy”! Not so bad for an old stager!

La grimpeuse britannique Hazel Findlay vient de réaliser une répétition de “Muy Caliente” (E9 6c), une voie ouverte par Tim Emmett il y a une décennie sur la falaise de Pembroke au pays de Galles. C’est la seconde féminine de la voie après Babsi Zangerl en 2017. Une nouvelle réalisation majeure en trad pour la polyvalente grimpeuse anglaise qui avait notamment réalisé plein de belles choses dans la discipline comme “Magic Line” au Yosemite. Voici le commentaire d’Hazel sur les réseaux sociaux :
“J’ai toujours pensé que si jamais j’étais en tête dans “Muy Caliente” (classique E9 de Pembroke), je m’assurerais que tout serait parfait : pas de doutes, en forme, forte sur les mouvements et avec des conditions idéales. Hier, c’était loin d’être le cas. Je suis presque tombée à mi-chemin dans le crux des gens à petite taille avec le point loin sous les pieds. Ce mouvement supplémentaire pour les petits est le plus difficile de la voie et très peu sûr — une chute d’ici serait énorme mais, espérons-le, sûre, même si je ne voudrais pas la tester ! J’ai dû tapisser 3 prises humides de papier d’aluminium pour garder mes doigts au sec, ce qui s’est avéré être une astuce très utile empruntée au Frankenjura. Qui connaissait cette astuce ? J’étais tellement nerveuse avant de m’encorder, me demandant si je faisais le bon choix de gravir une voie aussi sérieuse avec autant de doutes. Mais parfois, vous ne pouvez pas attendre que tout soit parfait et vous devez quand même y aller. Je me suis dit que j’allais juste grimper le départ facile et voir comment je me sentais, sachant au fond de moi que reculer était peu probable. Au repos avant la partie engagée, j’ai utilisé toutes les méthodes que je connais pour abaisser mon rythme cardiaque et gérer le stress mais mon cœur battait encore très vite. Tenter en tête la partie engagée et s’engager dans la voie a été un soulagement par rapport à l’incertitude de faire les 100 pas du dessous. J’ai brièvement envisagé de désescalader après avoir ressenti la première arquée du crux était grasse, mais j’ai exploité ma force intérieure et j’ai décidé d’y aller. Je me suis maintenue sur le mur avec un cri puissant et j’ai réussi à rester unie le reste de l’ascension. Merci à Tim Emmett d’avoir établi une ligne aussi incroyable et à Babsi Zangerl d’avoir été la pionnière de la méthode pour petite taille que je n’avais pas trouvée lorsque j’ai essayé cette voie pour la première fois il y a longtemps.”

It’s the second female ascent of the route after Babsi Zangerl in 2017. A new major achievement in tradclimbing for Hazel after a lot of feats like “Magic Line”. Here is her comment left on social media:
” I always thought that if I ever tied-in to lead Muy Caliente (classic run-out E9 in Pembroke) I would make sure that everything was perfect: there would be no second-guessing, I’d feel fit and strong on the moves and the conditions would be ideal. Yesterday was far from that. I almost fell off half way through the runout on the short-person crux. This additional move for shorties is the hardest on the route and very insecure – a fall from here would be huge but hopefully safe, although I wouldn’t want to test it! I had to line 3 wet pockets with tin foil to keep my fingers dry, which turned out to be a really useful trick borrowed from the Frankenjura! Who knew this was a thing?! I was so nervous before tying in, wondering whether I was making the right call to climb such a serious route with so many doubts. But sometimes you can’t wait for everything to be perfect and you have to go for it anyway. I told myself I’d just climb the easy start and see how I felt, knowing deep down that backing off was unlikely. At the rest before the runout I used all the methods I know to lower my heart rate and manage the stress but my heart was still pounding. Setting off up the run-out and committing to the route felt like a relief in comparison to the uncertainty of pacing around beneath the route. I briefly considered down-climbing after feeling the greasy first crimp of the crux, but harnessed my inner Tim Emmett and decided to go for it. A power scream kept me on the rock and I managed to keep myself together for the rest of the route. Thanks to Tim Emmett for establishing such an amazing line and Babsi Zangerl for pioneering the short person method I didn’t find when I first tried this route years ago.”
Le grimpeur britannique James Taylor vient de réaliser la première ascension d’une ligne extrêmement difficile en trad, “Prisoners of the Sun”, située dans le “Painted wall” sur le falaise de quartzite de Rhoscolyn au pays de Galles. James essayait ce projet local en fil rouge depuis 2018. Il lui a fallu pas moins de 35 séances de défrichage, un hiver d’entrainement et un mois complètement focalisé sur cette voie pour finalement la libérer. La voie qui fait ue vingtaine de mètres pour 20° de dévers est très technique avec un minimum de protections et un début en 7a potentiellement expo avec une chute potentielle d’environ 8 mètres sur une vire, avant une deuxième partie plus difficile en 7c+/8a et des protections à peine meilleures. James l’évalue à 8b ou E10 7a, ce qui en fait un des challenges les plus difficiles du pays de Galles. Plus d’infos sur UKC
British climber James Taylor just did the first ascent of an extreme trad line, “Prisoners of the Sun” at “Painted Wall”, on of the quartzite crags located close to Rhoscolyn, Wales. “Rainshadow”, 9a à Malham Cove est un morceau de longue date de la scène de l’escalade sportive au Royaume-Uni … Réalisé pour la première fois par Steve McClure en 2003, l’itinéraire a vu entre autres les ascensions d’Adam Ondra, Ben Moon et Will Bosi… La répétition du grimpeur basque Eder Lomba est la 12ème ascension au total, la 2e ascension non-britannique. L’itinéraire est une extension du 8a classique appelé “Raindogs” avec un problème de bloc en 8A+ dans un 8a+ voie pour la partie supérieure. Ten thousand bolts
Ce documentaire de 20 minutes réalisé par les américains Duncan Sullivan, Alex Levin & Ashley Benzwie est consacré à Toni Arbones, principal équipeur et local emblématique de Siurana, une des Mecques de l’escalade en Catalogne. En parallèle de son portrait, Tony dresse l’historique des lieux avec les premières voies sportives dans les années 90, une quarantaine de lignes, et cette piste cabossée atroce qui menait au village en raison de la présence d’un ex-dignitaire nazi tenant le village. Le potentiel des lieux est immense, un terrain de jeu incroyable pour Toni qui équipe par an entre 25 et 100 voies et possède un millier de voies à son actif. Ce boulimique d’ouverture est à l’origine de la renommée du village, qui compte désormais 1700 couennes. Un véritable passionné, limite hyper actif et un brin excentrique qui semble avoir le développement de l’escalade dans la peau. Bien que le film soit assez réussi, on aurait aimé davantage de contenu culturel et personnel sur les techniques d’équipement de Toni, ses positions éthiques comme sur la taille des prises, ou encore ses coups de cœur, son ressenti sur les voies mythiques. « Ten thousand bolts » demeure un sympathique tour du proprio.

Mark Hudon 63 ans, est un des pionniers du Yosemite. Mark y a participé à la naissance de l’escalade libre dans les années 70. Près de 40 ans après ses exploits dans la vallée, Mark se lie avec le jeune Jordan Cannon, 25 ans, pratiquant féru d’escalade historique, pour tenter un incroyable défi en duo : réaliser « Free Rider » en libre ! De l’année de préparation nécessaire aux tentatives d’ascensions naît une complicité de cordée intergénérationnelle assez forte. D’un côté, Mark se familiarise avec les nouvelles techniques de travail en big wall comme le repérage par le haut, et se remet en forme physiquement, admirablement coaché par Jordan. D’un autre côté le jeune passionné accède à un doux rêve de gamin : partager des moments de grimpe avec ses idoles. On appréciera les images en paroi qui mettent particulièrement en exergue la haute technicité de l’entreprise, notamment dans la longueur clé « Teflon Corner » qui semble proposer une escalade en dièdre des plus pénibles. Happy end : Jordan réussira l’ascension dans la journée et Mark réalisera l’intégralité de la voie à 2 mouvements près. Mais au-delà des performances le film met en avant l’amitié entre les deux hommes et la singularité d’une expérience incroyable sur le big wall le plus célèbre du monde.
Pretty Strong – Fernanda
« Pretty Strong » est un documentaire dédiée à l’escalade féminine, dirigé par l’américaine Colette McInerney. On nous présente ici le chapitre du long-métrage dédié à la grimpeuse mexicaine Fernanda Rodriguez. En plus de voir un moment de grimpe partagé entre filles avec notamment Daila Ojeda, on en profite pour faire du repérage en se délectant des superbes ambiances des spots de grimpe autour de Monterrey (nord-est du Mexique) notamment El Salto. Animée par une incroyable ténacité et une combativité impressionnante, Fernanda finit par clipper le relais de son projet du moment « Andrada’s project » 8b+. A muerte spirit !
Climbing Blind
Climbing Blind nous embarque pour 45 minutes dans la vie de Jesse Dufton, grimpeur anglais. Mal-voyant de naissance, Jesse pratique l’escalade depuis son enfance et malgré un déclin quasi totale de sa vue, on découvre comment Jesse continue de pratiquer sa passion et pas à moitié : en bon grimpeur anglais, il pratique l’escalade en terrain d’aventure. Il envoie le roast-beef en trad et en tête le bonhomme ! Au fur et à mesure du film, on découvre comme cela est possible et en particulier la force de la relation de confiance que Jesse et sa femme ont développée au cours d’années d’aventures communes. Le point d’orge du film est l’ascension de l’éperon rocheux Old Man of Hoy sur la côte écossaise. Les prises de vue sont magnifiques et viennent sublimer cette très belle histoire. Spoiler, on a presque plus peur en regardant la marche d’approche que l’ascension elle-même !

Due to the pandemic, the Banff Festival is in 100% VOD format in 2021. The positive side of it is that the organization has created a 100% climbing program (“The green program”) with 4 climbing movies for even more vertical adventures!
Ten thousand bolts
This 20-minute documentary directed by the Americans Duncan Sullivan, Alex Levin & Ashley Benzwie is devoted to Toni Arbones, main bolter and emblematic local of Siurana, one of the famous climbing place in Catalonia, Spain. In parallel with his portrait, Tony explains the history of the place with the first sports route in the 90s and the horrible track which use to go to the village due to the presence of a former Nazi dignitary in the village. The potential of the Siurana‘s cliffs is huge and it is an incredible playground for Toni who is bolting between 25 and 100 routes per year and has a thousand routes to his credit. This open-minded bolting bulimic is at the origin of the fame of the village, which now has 1,700 routes. He is a true enthusiast, almost hyper active and a bit eccentric guy who seems to have the development of climbing in his blood. Although the film is quite nice, we would have enjoyed more cultural and personal content on Toni’s equipment techniques, his favorite routes, his ethical positions as on the hold chipping. “Ten thousand bolts” remains a nice look around of the place.
Free as can be
Mark Hudon 63 years old, is one of the pioneers of Yosemite and took part of the development of the free climbing in the 1970s. Almost 40 years after his feats in the valley, Mark and the young Jordan Cannon decide to climb together in order to try an incredible challenge: free climbing “Free Rider” ! From the year of preparation to the several attempts, the roped party built a fairly strong intergenerational affinity. On the one hand, Mark was familiarizing himself with new big wall techniques such as spotting the route from above, and was getting back in shape , admirably coached by Jordan. On the other hand, the young enthusiast was living a sweet childhood dream: sharing moments of climbing with his idols. We appreciate the images on the wall which particularly highlight the high technicality of the route, especially in the dihedralof “Teflon Corner”. Happy end: Jordan will sent the route in one day and Mark will complete the entire route expected from 2 moves. But beyond the performances, the film highlights the friendship between the two men and the singularity of an incredible experience on the most famous big wall in the world.
Pretty Strong – Fernanda
“Pretty Strong” is a serie of documentary movied dedicated to female climbing and directed by American Colette McInerney. The present episode focuses on tje Mexican climber Fernanda Rodriguez. In addition to capturing a moment of climbing shared between female climber as Daila Ojeda, the movie gives us the opportunity to enjoy the superb atmospheres of the climbing spots around Monterrey including El Salto. Driven by incredible tenacity and impressive combativeness, Fernanda manage to send her current project “Andrada’s project” 8b +. A muerte spirit!
Climbing Blind
Climbing Blind takes us during 45 minutes into the life of Jesse Dufton, an English climber. Visually impaired from birth, Jesse has been climbing since his childhood and despite an almost total decline in his eyesight, we discover how Jesse continues to practice his passion and not by halves: as a good English climber, he likes to lead rock trad climbing ! As the film progresses, we discover how this is possible and in particular the strength of the relationship of trust that Jesse and his wife have developed during the year of joint adventure. The point of the film is the ascent of the Old Man of Hoy rocky outcrop on the Scottish coast. The shots are magnificent and come to sublimate this very beautiful story. Spoiler, we were almost more scared watching the approach step than the climb itself.
