Depuis quelques jours, Rodellar, la mecque de la Sierra de Guarra, est visitée par une équipe slovène de compétiteurs (Lukan, Skofic, Krampl…), avec de belles performances à la clé !

Vita Lukan, 21 ans, en profite pour frapper fort et réaliser la classique de la Gran Boveda, “Geminis” 8b+ à vue ! Cette King line très athlétique de 40 mètres au milieu de la baume déversante offre un marathon de conti sur trous et colos.

Elle déclare sur son compte Instagram :
“Cela a été un gros combat, pas uniquement contre les bouteilles mais aussi contre moi-même. C’était dur de rester calme dans la partie sommitale de la king line, là où mon mental commençait à flancher. J’ai toujours eu un rapport amour-haine avec ces longues voies déversantes de Rodellar. Et je ne suis pas habituée à grimper avec des genouillères. On est à la moitié du trip et la motivation est grande pour la suite du séjour.”

Avec cette belle croix, Vita rentre dans le club très fermé des femmes ayant réalisé du 8b+ à vue : Katie Brown (“Omaha Beach”), Josune Bereziartu (“Hidrofobia”), Charlotte Durif (“Les rois du pétrole”), Maja Vidmar (“Humildes pa casa”), Sacha DiGiulian (“Omaha Beach”), Kajsa Rosén (“T1 full-equip”), Laura Rogora (“L-mens”) Anak Verhoeven (“Gorillas en la niebla”) et Martina Demmel (“Humildes pa casa”).

Un peu plus bas sur la colline, Domen Skofic s’est adjugé une répétition de la combinaison “Ali Hulk extension total sit start” 9b dans la grotte d’Ali Baba, qu’il a réalisé sans genouillères pour son premier 9b.

“La dernière fois que je suis venu à Rodellar j’ai visité tous les secteurs sauf la grotte d’Ali Baba car je pensais que ça ne valait pas vraiment le coup d’y grimper. Cette fois-ci je voulais connaître l’endroit et au contraire j’ai trouvé la grotte très cool et j’étais très motivé à l’idée d’essayer les movements. Comme je savais que ma forme n’était pas au top, je n’attendais rien de spécial et j’ai juste joué dans la voie. Après 3 jours de travail j’ai assemblé ensemble tous les morceaux et je l’ai réalisé à mon premier vrai essai. Je ne pensais pas que cela irait aussi vite et du coup je suis un peu sceptique sur la cotation. 9b ou pas c’était sympa de reconstituer ce puzzle et de me motiver encore plus pour mes objectifs futurs.”

In the last few days, Rodellar, the climbing mecca from Sierra de Guarra is being visited by a team of strong Slovenian competitors (Lukan, Skofic, Krampl…), with some nice sends to boot!

Vita Lukan, 21, has struk and onsighted the classical king line of Gran Boveda, “Geminis” 8b+! This overhanging 40-meter line offers a stamina challenge on tufas and pockets. Vita described her send on Instagram :

“It was a huge fight not just against the pump but also against myself – it was hard to stay calm in the upper part of 40m long kingline where mind started playing tricks with me. Still have some kind of love-hate relationship with these long and overhanging routes in Rodellar…and I still haven’t gotten used to climb with knee bars.
Halfway through our trip and psyche for the rest is high.”

Vita now belongs in the very private club of women who have onsighted 8b+: Katie Brown (“Omaha Beach”), Josune Bereziartu (“Hidrofobia”), Charlotte Durif (“Les rois du pétrole”), Maja Vidmar (Humildes pa casa”), Sacha DiGiulian (“Omaha Beach”), Kajsa Rosén (“T1 full-equip”), Laura Rogora (“L-mens”), Anak Verhoeven (“Gorillas en la niebla”) and Martina Demmel (“Humildes pa casa”).

Meanwhile, a little further down the hill, Domen Skofic has repeated “Ali Hulk extension total sit start” 9b, located in Ali Baba cave, without kneepads.

“The last time I visited almost all the sectors except Ali Baba cave because I thought it’s not worth to climb there.
This time I said I will at least check the place before I judge and on the contrary I found the cave really cool and I got extremely psyched to try the moves. As I thought my shape is not the best I didn’t expect anything and I just played on the moves. After 3 days of work I brought all the pieces together and today I sent it on my first try.
I didn’t expect it’s going to happen that fast and therefore I’m a little bit skeptical about the grade.
9b or not it felt great building this puzzle together and made me even more motivated for my future goals.“

Réalisé par Raphaël FOURAU et produit par France Nature Environnement Languedoc Roussillon et le CT 34 de la FFME, ce documentaire sera disponible sur les plateformes numériques le 15 novembre !

Une nouvelle charte Greenspits vient de voir le jour. Le rééquipement des falaises est un enjeu majeur des prochaines décennies concernant l’escalade en milieu naturel. Mais l’aspect éthique se pose : comment conserver le caractère de la voie et l’esprit dans lequel a été ouverte la ligne si la personne en charge du rééquipement n’est pas l’équipeur initial de la voie ?
L’association Greenspits qui propose des stages de rééquipement depuis plus deux ans s’est penché sur la question, et une charte proposant des principes éthiques est née. Cette proposition est le fruit d’un brainstorming de 15 équipeurs du Sud de la France qui ont échangé sur les manières de procéder. Le rééquipement, un acte solidaire nécessaire mais qui touche au patrimoine grimpe. Comment faire en sorte de ne pas dénaturer les voies existantes tout limitant les risques d’accident et en rénovant les ancrages ?

La charte du rééquipement Greenspits apporte quelques éléments de réponse !

A rebolting charter has just been published by Greenspits, a French climbers association acting for rockclimbing development. The rebolting of crags is for sure a major issue for the next decades. But the ethical aspects come: how to preserve the character of the route and the spirit of the line if the person in charge of rebolting is not the initial bolter of the route?
The Greenspits association, which has been organizing rebolting classes for over two years, looked into the question, and launched a charter proposing ethical principles. This proposal is the result of brainstorming by 15 well-known bolters from the South of France who exchanged views on how to proceed. Rebolting, a necessary act of solidarity but which affects our heritage. How can we ensure that the existing routes are not changed while limiting the risk of accidents and renovating the bolts?

Le champion autrichien Jakob Schubert vient de passer des vacances à Majorque où il s’est adonné au Pscicobloc. Bien lui en pris puisque la semaine passée, Jakob a réussi la seconde ascension d’ “Alasha” (8c+/9a, crux sommital autour du 8B bloc) à Port de Soller, une lignée établie par le King Chris Sharma. Ensuite Jakob s’est naturellement tourné vers la célèbre arche d’Es Pontas à Santanyi, souvent essayée mais assez peu répétée. Depuis l’ouverture de Chris Sharma en 2007, seuls Jernej Kruder et Jan Hojer ont réussi à répéter la King line, célèbre pour son impressionnant jeté . “J’ai réalisé le jeté et je ne suis plus tombé ! commente Jakob sur son compte Instagram, qui empoche donc la 4ème ascension. Voici son retour sur son trip dans ce vlog avant la vidéo de sa répétition un peu plus tard… En un seul trip ici, Jakob aura répété les deux voies les plus dures de l’île et peut-être du monde en deep water ! Austrian champion Jakob Schubert has just spent an holiday trip in Mallorca where he practiced pscicobloc. Things went fast: last week, Jakob managed the second ascent of “Alasha” (8c+/ 9a, topcrux around 8B boulder) at Port de Soller, a line established by King Chris Sharma. Then Jakob naturally went to the famous arch of Es Pontas in Santanyi, often tried but not often repeated. Since Chris Sharma’s first ascent in 2007, only Jernej Kruder and Jan Hojer have managed to repeat the King line, famous for his impressive dyno. “I stuck the dyno and didn‘t let go anymore!” comments Jakob on his Instagram account, grabbing the 4th ascent. Here is his feedback on his trip in this vlog, waiting for the video of his repeat of Es Pontas a little bit later… In just one trip here, Jakob will have climbed the two hardest routes of the island and may be of the World in deep water! Strong!

Il est un des plus forts bloqueurs japonais en matière de bloc naturel avec Ryohei Kameyama ou encore la légende Dai Koyamada, avec une ribambelle de 8C déjà à son actif et l’ouverture de blocs extrêmes comme “United” 8C+. Ryuichi Murai vient de libérer une nouveau gros projet et d’ouvrir “Nexus” à Shiobara, un enchainement de 40 mouvements qu’il propose 8C+. Autant le passage est sûrement d’une difficulté inouïe et le plus dur jamais réalisé par Ryuchi dans ce style, autant nous nous posons la question du sens de proposer une cotation bloc plutôt qu’une cotation voie pour définir le niveau d’un effort aussi long qui est clairement dans une filière résistance. Cette interrogation vaut aussi pour des blocs se voulant étalons de la haute-difficulté comme “Horizon”, “Wheel of Life”, “Wheel of Chaos” ou encore “Grand Illusion”. Mais peu importe.
Voici ci-dessous le commentaire de l’intéressé laissé sur son compte Instagram :

“Finalement ! Je suis super heureux d’avoir fait mon grand projet “Uma extension”. La difficulté de cette ligne a été, outre le fait d’empiler un grand nombre de mouvements à haute intensité de force, d’accumuler du stress lié à des petits écueils et des erreurs qui affectaient grandement mes performances. Par conséquent, c’était un challenge non seulement pour l’endurance, mais aussi pour ce qui est de la réalisation parfaite des mouvements.

Après en avoir compris la logique, j’ai revu en profondeur tous les mouvements et je les ai répété jusqu’à ce que mon corps puisse les réaliser sans réfléchir.
Hier, tous les morceaux se sont assemblés parfaitement, et un puzzle vieux de 5 ans a finalement été complété.

Le bloc fait 40 mouvements et je suis un peu troublé d’annoncer une cotation bloc. Cependant je propose V16 parce que je trouve cet enchainement plus dur que d’autres lignes du même style “Babel” (8C) à Shiobara et “In search of time lost” (8C) à Magic Wood. J’aimerais le comparer à “Grand Illusion” un jour.
Au projet suivant !”

Ryuchi Murai is one of the strongest Japanese outside boulderers with Ryohei Kameyama or the legend Dai Koyamada, with plenty of 8C’s already under his belt and the first ascent of extreme boulders like “United” 8C+. Ryuichi has just freed a new big project and opened “Nexus” in Shiobara, a 40 movements line with an 8C+ grade proposition. As much as the passage is surely incredibly difficult and the hardest ever made by Ryuchi in this style, we ask ourselves the question of the meaning of proposing a bouldering grade rather than a rockclimbing grade to define the level of such a long effort which is clearly in a resistance testpiece. This question also applies to boulders that want to be standards of high-difficulty in the bouldering world like “Horizon”, “Wheel of Life”, “Wheel of Chaos” or even “Grand Illusion”. But whatever.
Here is Ryuchi’s comment on his Instagram account:

“Finally! Super psyched to have done my long standing project “UMA extension”.

The difficulty in achieving this line was that in addition to the large number of moves and high strength, the accumulation of mental stress due to slight squeaks and mistakes greatly affected performance. Therefore, it was important not only for endurance but also for how sophisticated the movement could be.

After understanding the logic, I thoroughly reviewed all the moves again and practiced repeatedly until my body naturally started to move without thinking. And yesterday, all the pieces fit perfectly, and the five-year puzzle was finally completed.

This line consists of nearly 40 moves and I was worried about the boulder grade. However, I propose V16 because it felt harder than the similar lines “Babel” (V15/8C) in Shiobara and “In search of time lost (V15/8C)” in Magic Wood. Wanna compare it with “Grand Illusion” someday.
On to the next project.“

L’opus retracera leur périple de 2 semaines à l’été 2020 où la cordée a réalisé la trilogie alpine en vélo, avec 3 grandes-voies historiques à la clé : “End of silence” des frères Huber, “Des Kaisers neue Kleider” de Stefan Glowasz et le “Silbergeier” de Beat Kammerlander dans les Rätikon. Pour amener un peu d’épice à l’aventure, ils amenèrent… leurs chiens, Koux et Bintche !

Sensation à Baile Herculane (sud de la Roumanie) où Darius Rapa devient le premier grimpeur roumain à réaliser du 9a avec “Black Cobra extension” ! Cette voie de 35 mètres du secteur Waterfall inclut une grosse section de résistance dans sa partie haute après un 8b d’approche. Elle avait été libérée par Adam Ondra en 2018. Originaire de Bucarest et âgé seulement de 15 ans (!), Darius a profité de conditions parfaites pour réaliser la 4ème ascension de la voie à la 5ème tentative seulement ! La nouvelle génération est en place ! Le polonais Wojtek Pelka et le bulgare Nicolay Rusev avaient aussi répété la ligne avant le jeune roumain. Mini-interview avec Darius.

– Combien de temps as-tu passé dans la voie ? Comment s’est passé le travail ?
J’ai essayé la voie une fois il y a 3 mois mais je ne suis pas arrivé à faire tous les mouvements. Ce week-end je voulais y aller pour essayer une méthode et de manière assez inattendue j’étais super bien dans tous les mouvements. Les conditions étaient parfaites pour un essai, donc j’étais très motivé pour la faire car je ne savais pas si j’aurais pu réessayer après (entre les entrainements et la météo hivernale).

– Pourquoi avoir essayé cette ligne en particulier ?
J’ai essayé cette voie car elle est située dans le meilleur spot et la meilleure falaise de Roumanie, et car elle a été réalisée par Adam Ondra, donc c’était bien d’essayer.

– Un prochain projet ? “Stone Butterfly” (ndlr : premier 9a+ sur le sol roumain) ?
Pour les prochains projets je ne sais pas car je suis plutôt un compétiteur et je ne viens en falaise que sur des breaks de compétition. Mais je vais essayer de faire davantage de 8c et 8c+, peut-être la première partie de “Stone Butterfly” et pourquoi pas essayer l’intégrale…

Amazing news coming from Baile Herculane, Romania, where Darius Rapa just became the first Romanian climber to send a 9a with “Black Cobra”. This line located at Waterfall (Km12) offers 35 meters of resistance climbing followed by an intense top part after an 8b approach. The route was first ascended by Adam Ondra in 2018. Hailing from Bucarest and only 15 (!), Darius took advantage of perfect conditions to climb the route at his 5th attempt only, grabbing the 4th ascent. Before him, the Pole Wojtek Pelka and Bulgarian Nicolay Rusev also ticked “Black Cobra”. Here is a short talk with Darius.

– How long did you project the route for? What was the process like?
I’ve tried the route once like 3 months ago and couldn’t do all the moves. And this weekend I wanted to try a new beta, and very unexpectedly I was able to do all the moves. The conditions were perfect for a send, so I was pretty motivated to do it now because I dunno how soon I could have come back (because of training and winter).

– Why did you try this route in particular?
I tried this route because it is at the best crag and wall in Romania, and because it was done by Adam Ondra before.

– Next Project? “Stone Butterfly”?
As for the next project I don’t know because I’m more a competition climber and only go to the rocks when there’s a break. But I will try to do more 8c’s and 8c+’s (the first part of “Stone butterfly”) and surely will try stone butterfly sometime…

L’article Darius Rapa, premier grimpeur roumain à réaliser du 9a – Darius Rapa, first Romanian to climb 9a (+video) est apparu en premier sur Fanatic Climbing.

Jonathan Siegrist vient de réaliser une nouvelle belle coche avec la 4ème ascension de “Lapsus” à Andonno en Italie. Cette voie historique, extension de “Noia”, premier 8c+ transalpin (par Severino Scassa en 1993) a été libérée en 2015 par Stefano Ghisolfi, avant les ascension d’Adam Ondra en 2017 et récemment ce printemps de Marcello Bombardi. Le grimpeur pro américain aura eu besoin de 2 séjours (le premier a été vite avorté pour cause de pandémie mondiale) pour dompter ce monstre de continuité pour lequel il propose une légère décotation à 9a+/b, précisant qu’il a réalisé la voie sans genouillères dans le même esprit que Stefano lors de la première. C’est la seconde voie autour du 9b pour Jonathan cette année, lui qui avait déjà réalisé la première ascension de “Peruvian necktie” en mai dernier, et le 4ème en tout avec “Jumbo Love et “La Planta de Shiva”.

Voici son commentaire via son compte Instagram :
“J’ai d’abord essayé cet itinéraire génial début mars 2020. Après environ une semaine dans le Nord de l’Italie, nous sommes partis à la hâte, remplis d’incertitude et absolument pas préparés à ce qui allait suivre… 18 mois plus tard, nous sommes finalement revenus pour ce joyau historique de la falaise. C’était très important pour Shaina et moi de revenir à Cuneo et de faire de notre mieux pour terminer le voyage que nous avions commencé auparavant. Je suis ravi de dire qu’au cours des deux derniers jours, nous avons tous les deux réussi nos projets de l’année dernière ! Shaina un 7c+ super dur appelé “Biro” et moi sur cette incroyable morceau d’endurance qu’est “Lapsus” 9a+/b. Il nous reste encore quelques semaines à prendre du bon temps en Italie, alors j’espère que ce n’est que le début. Je ne peux pas exprimer à quel point je suis chanceux d’être de retour sur ce calcaire bleu de rêve et m’en mettre plein les bras ! Merci à la grande communauté ici pour nous faire sentir comme à la maison.”

Jonathan Siegrist just achieved a new feat with “Lapsus” 4th ascent, a route located in Andonno, Italy. This historical line, extension of Italy’s first 8c+ “Noia” has been freed by Stefano Ghisolfi in 2015 before 2 more ascents by Adam Ondra (2017) and recently this Spring by Marcello Bombardi. The American pro climber made two trips here for completing the line. The first trip was quickly miscarried due to Covid pandemia. Jonathan proposes a slighty downgrade, 9a+/b as grade, claiming he didn’t use kneepads during his send for staying in the first ascent spirit. It’s his 2nd route around 9b this year after “Peruvian Necktie” first ascent last May and his 4th 9b route if you don’t forget “Jumbo Love” and “La Planta de Shiva”.

“I first tried this awesome route in early March, 2020. After about a week in Northern Italy, we left in a hurry, wildly uncertain and underprepared for what would come next… Fast forward 18 months and we finally made our way back to this historic, hidden gem of a crag. It felt quite important to both Shaina and I to come back to Cuneo and do our best to finish the trip that we had started before. I’m stoked to say over the last couple days we both sent our projects from last year! Shaina on a super hard 7c+ called ‘Biro’ and me on this amazing endurance test piece ‘Lapsus’ 9a+/b. Some more weeks yet to enjoy in Italy so hopefully this is just the beginning. I can’t express how grateful I am to be back on dreamy, drippy blue limestone getting pumped out of my mind! Thanks to the great community here for making us feel at home.”

Dans la video qui suit, en plus de travailler la Kingline “Perfecto Mundo”, Tom présente une nouvelle ligne voisine équipée par ses soins à Raco de La Finestra à la difficulté inouïe , un projet ultime qui pourrait rivaliser avec l’effort de “Perfecto Mundo” selon ses dires… Après une première partie autour du 9a/+ (“The Jouney”), Tom doit se frapper un pas de bloc sommital extrême qu’il ne semble pas parvenir encore à faire, alors que quand il essaie le crux de “Perfecto Mundo” estimé aux alentours du 8A bloc il y arrive quasi systématiquement… A continuer…Attention, doigts fragiles s’abstenir !

We have already written some articles about Tom Bolger’s developments, this British fanatic who has been living in Catalunya for years. Already very active a few years ago around Santa Linya, Tom is now the most active in Margalef, repeating hard routes and also bolting extreme lines. La top grimpeuse Suisse enchaîne en réalisant une nouvelle grande-voie difficile ! En effet, Kathy Choong vient de répéter un des musts de la Paroi du Duc (Verdon, Point Sublime) “Une Jolie Fleur dans une Peau de Vache” (300m, 7 longueurs, 8b max.) accompagnée par son compagnon Jim Zimmermann. Kathy nous raconte en exclusivité son ascension.

“Après avoir passé des semaines engouffrée dans le brouillard à saucissonner sur chaque mouv’ de mon projet de l’été en Suisse (une longue voie nommée “6.4 Sekunden”, de style vertical dont chaque mouv’ m’a donné beaucoup de fil à retordre), mon copain Jim Zimmermann et moi étions bien motivés à nous trouver un beau projet dans un style qui déroule un peu plus, à travailler ensemble, quelque part dans les belles gorges du Verdon. Des amis m’avaient parlé de la voie “Une Jolie Fleur dans une Peau de Vache” dont le style devait apparemment bien me convenir, située dans l’impressionnante Paroi du Duc qui se dresse au-dessus des eaux turquoises du Verdon. Elle se compose de 7 longueurs (6b, 8b, 7b, 8a, 5c, 8a, 6b) pour un total de 300 mètres de grimpe (très) déversants parsemés d’incroyables colonnettes où l’on peut tordre des lolottes dans tous les sens et coincer des genoux pour ne pas finir les bras totalement rôtis et toastés. Pas étonnant que ça convienne à mon style d’escargot ça ! Si jusque là Jim m’a toujours accompagnée patiemment dans mes projets et que sa présence a été capitale dans leur aboutissement, j’ai rarement eu l’occasion de le soutenir dans une longue voie. Histoire de bien partager les moments de pression et de succès, on a décidé de tenter d’enchaîner chaque longueur les deux dans la même journée (le plan était que je grimpe chaque longueur en tête et que je redescende assurer Jim en tête dans les trois longueurs clefs dans le 8ème degré). Nous sommes montés deux jours jusqu’en haut défricher chaque longueur. La pluie ayant ensuite détrempé la paroi et pas mal de prises dans la 2ème longueur (8b), nous avons passé deux autres jours à juste travailler cette longueur sans monter plus haut, les conditions n’étant pas top pour tenter un enchaînement. Le 5ème jour, nous tentons l’enchaînement. Chaque longueur est un combat de résistance mais motivés par les ascensions successives de l’un et de l’autre, nous parvenons à grimper les cinq premières longueurs sans tomber. La dernière longueur (8a), la plus longue, qu’on n’avait pas bien très bien calée, reste à faire. Pas trop le temps de se reposer, le soleil pointe son nez. Jim se lance, tremble à peine dans le crux du bas de la voie avant de mener un combat mémorable jusqu’au relais ! Il redescend pour m’assurer et boostée par son ascension, je parviens également au relais, à la limite de me la coller quelque fois. Au sommet de la voie, une douce teinte dorée s’empare du ciel, les rayons de soleil s’échouent contre les dernières longueurs du rocher, le moment est magique. Encore une fois je suis incroyablement reconnaissante d’avoir pu vivre cette belle aventure et de l’avoir partagée avec mon compagnon de cordée et de vie.”

Top Swiss climber Kathy Choong has struck again with the send of another hard multipitch! With her boyfriend Jim Zimmermann, Kathy just repeated one of the must-dos of the Verdon gorge, “Une jolie Fleur dans une Peau de Vache” (300m, 7 pitches, 8b) located at Paroi du Duc. Kathy tells us more.
“After spending some weeks in the fog struggling on every move of my Swiss old-school project “6.4 Sekunden”, my boyfriend Jim Zimmermann and I were very motivated to find a nice project in a less complicated style, a route somewhere in the Verdon gorge. Some friends suggested “Une Jolie Fleur dans une Peau de Vache” for a style that would suit me well. It’s a route located at the impressive Paroi du Duc, just above the turquoise Verdon river. It’s 7 pitches-long (6b, 8b, 7b, 8a, 5c, 8a, 6b) for 300 meters of overhanging climbing on tufas, with insane drop knees and kneebar rests to try and get rid of the pump. Not surprisingly, it suits my snail-speed style! Even though Jim supports me all the time on my projects and his presence is a key, I only get a few occasions to return the favour on a multipitch project. It was time to share the pressure and successes, so we decided to try to free the line together on the same day. Here was the plan: I would lead all the pitches, and go down and belay him for his lead attempts of the 3 hardest pitches in the 8th range. We worked the line for 2 days to the top. The 2 days following, the crux pitch (L2, 8b) was wet due to the rain, so we worked the crux sections because the conditions were not the best for an attempt of the whole route. On the 5th day, we went for it. Every pitch is a power endurance fight, but helped by the success of each other we managed to climb the first 5 pitches without falling. The last pitch (8a), the longest one, is the one we had tried the least. No time to take a long rest due to the sun coming on the face, so Jim goes. After climbing the crux, he gave everything in a huge fight to the top. It was my turn and motivated by his send, I climbed this last pitch completely pumped too. At the top of the route it was the golden hour, a very magical atmosphere. I’m very glad to have this kind of adventures and share it with my teammate and boyfriend.”

Depuis quelques mois, les choses s’activent en Grèce, au Nord d’Athènes avec le développement d’énormes grottes à concrétions, non sans rappeler les autres spots connus du pays comme Kalymnos ou Leonidio. C’est précisément dans un canyon autour du village de Manikia sur l’île d’Eubée qu’une poignée d’équipeurs français œuvrent depuis 2018 pour développer les falaises. Récemment le développement s’accélère grâce à Petzl et ce sont des grands noms comme Sasha DiGiulian, Nina Caprez, Anak Verhoeven, Alex Megos, Cédric Lachat, Steve McClure ou encore Dani Andrada qui se sont rendus sur l’île courant octobre pour grimper et épauler une team d’équipeurs (Claude Idoux, Nicolas Glée, Olivier Aubel, Bruno Beatrix et Benoit Martineau entre autres). Ce sont maintenant pas moins de 400 voies et 10 grandes-voies qui existent désormais sur le spot pour une trentaine de secteurs. Un Roc Trip se tiendra sur place au mois de mai prochain.

In recent months, things have been busy in Greece, in the North of Athens with the development of huge caves with tufas, reminding the other famous places of the country like Kalymnos or Leonidio. It’s precisely in a canyon around the village of Manikia on the island of Euboea that plenty of French bolters have been working since 2018 to develop the crags. Recently, development is accelerating thanks to Petzl. Some famous pro climbers like Sasha DiGiulian, Nina Caprez, Anak Verhoeven, Alex Megos, Cédric Lachat, Steve McClure or Dani Andrada went to the island in October to climb, bolt and help a team of bolters (Claude Idoux, Nicolas Glée, Olivier Aubel, Bruno Beatrix and Benoit Martineau among others). There are now no less than 400 routes and 10 multipitch routes that now exist on the place for around thirty sectors. A Roc Trip will be held here next May.

Le top bloqueur américain Matt Fultz a réalisé un mois de février 2021 prolifique à Red Rocks dans le Colorado, avec une bonne partie des classiques dures du site en poche. Ainsi Matt a réalisé en quelques jours “Sleepwalker” (8C+), “Squoze” (8B+), “Trieste sit” (8B+) et “The Nest” (8C). Compte-rendu en video ci-dessous en guise de souvenir.

American top boulderer Matt Fultz did a rampage last February at Red Rocks, Colorado with a lot of extreme classics of the place climbed in a few days. Matt repeated “Sleepwalker” (8C+), “Squoze” (8B+), “Trieste sit” (8B+) and “The Nest” (8C). Video below as memory.

Il n’y a pas que Tom Bolger qui a des projets extrêmes actuellement au secteur Finestra de Margalef ! Le fort falaisiste espagnol Jorge Diaz-Rullo essaie depuis ce début d’été un nouveau projet futuriste, “Cafe Columbia”, une ligne équipée par le colombien Anghelo Bernal Quintero en juin dans l’impressionnant dévers du cirque. Aujourd’hui Jorge vient de réaliser la première ascension de “Cafe Solo”, la première partie du projet qui s’échappe ensuite dans le “facile” sur la gauche avant le pas de bloc sommital du projet principal.

Jorge décrit la voie de la sorte :
“Les 3 premières dégaines ne sont pas très dures, mais tu dois rester en tension pour le premier pas de bloc. Un clippage dur puis un crux avec un jeté assez précis de bidoigt à bidoigt, puis 4 autres mouvements pour finir le pas de bloc, un dernier mouvement dynamique, où si tu tombes tu vas par terre car clipper les deux dégaines autour est impossible pour moi. Cela revient à faire un 8c+/9a très court et explosif de 15 mouvements. Ensuite un autre pas de bloc arrive, autour du 8A+ bloc, 6 mouvements sur des petits bidoigts de nouveau qui demandent beaucoup de gainage avec deux mouvements aléatoires qui rendent l’affaire très corsée quand tu arrives dans l’enchainement. S’ajoutent encore 6 mouvements moins durs et qui donnent une petite note rési jusqu’à un repos sur une petite arquée où tu peux délayer pas plus de 3 fois chaque main.”

C’est là que la fin plus facile, “Cafe Solo”, 9b peut être empruntée. Il restera à Jorge de se frapper le pas de bloc sommital pour s’offrir “Cafe Columbia” :
” Après ce repos, il reste une grosse section bloc de 3 dégaines, environ 8A+/B bloc où tu peux tomber à chaque mouvement avec le mouvement le plus difficile qui est au milieu, où tu vas d’une arquée en épaule à une autre avec des pieds loin et mauvais. Il faudra arriver frais au repos pour avoir une chance”.

Après “FRFM”, “Perfecto Mundo” et “Artaburu”, “Mejorando imagen”, “Cafe Solo” se glisse dans les propositions les plus extrêmes de la Mecque catalane. Et “Cafe columbia” sûrement un des projets les plus futuristes au Monde ! Un aperçu dans la vidéo ci-dessous.

Tom Bolger is not the only one to try hard in Raco de La Finestra, Margalef! The strong Spanish rockclimber Jorge Diaz-Rullo is trying since the early summer a futuristic project called “Cafe Columbia”, a line bolted last June by Colombian Anghelo Bernal Quintero in the massive overhang of the crag. Today Jorge freed “Cafe Solo” which is the first part of the project skipping the top boulder of the main project for an easier left finish.
Jorge describes the line:

“The first three quickdraws are not very hard but they put you in a tense position for the first boulder. A hard clip and immediately after starts a crux with a very precise dynamic move from one two finger pocket to another, then continue for another 4 hard moves to finish the boulder, and then one last dynamic move, in which if you fall you go to the ground because clipping the two previous quickdraws isnt possible for me.

From what I’ve described, I thought this might be a short and explosive 15 move 8c+/9a. Next, another boulder continues around the 8A+ grade with 6 moves on very short two finger pockets, which requires a lot of body tension, with two very low percentage moves that make it much more difficult from the ground…

After this, there are 6 moves that are not so hard but require endurance, just before reaching the “rest” of the route, a very small crimp where I have to count 3 hand shakes each to manage a little bit of a “rest” before continuing…

That’s at this point you can turn left in an easier finish for climbing “Cafe Solo”. It still stayed to link with the buisiness, the main crux of “Cafe Columbia project” :

“From this “rest” to the end, I think the hardest thing is missing, a long boulder of three quickdraws about 8A+/B aprox boulder, in which at each move you can fall, but specifically with a crux in the middle of pulling from one shoulder crimp to another, with bad and far feet. It’s important to arrive perfect to be able to do it.”

After “FRFM”, “Perfecto Mundo”, “Artaburu”, “Mejorando Imagen”, “Cafe Solo” is one of the hardest proposition of Catalan’s mecca. And “Cafe Columbia” for sure one of the hardest sportclimbing project of the World! Have a look in the video above.

Incroyable performance à la falaise d’Oliana en Catalogne, où la mutante slovène Janja Garnbret vient de réaliser la classique de continuité de 50 mètres “Fish Eye” 8c à vue ! Et cela tombe bien, car nous étions sur place et nous avons pu profiter du spectacle !

Pourtant la championne olympique n’était pas en réussite depuis le début de son séjour catalan… La veille, pour sa première journée sur place, Janja a subi des échecs cuisants à vue dans “Humildes pa casa” et “Gorilas en la Niebla”, toutes deux 8b+, en tombant bien bas dans ses tentatives. Ce midi, pour son 2ème jour, Janja retombe encore en fin d’échauffement dans “Humildes pa casa”, déclarant manquer de volume. Un bon repos plus tard la voilà remobilisée pour tenter “Fish Eye”.

La première partie de la voie, un 8a+ athlétique, ne sera qu’une formalité, et c’est fraîche que Janja exécute le premier pas de bloc du milieu de voie, gravi parfaitement, sans erreur de lecture et avec pile la bonne intensité. Quelques délayages plus tard et la voici déjà dans la partie haute plus conti de la voie, à presque 40 mètres de haut juste sous le pas de bloc à doigts qui en aura fait tomber plus d’un. C’est d’ailleurs la forme de la prise de ce crux, un bidoigt évasé et rond, qui donne son nom à la voie.

Après une hésitation dans le pas où Janja, à l’envers, s’est payée le luxe de revenir quelques secondes au semi-repos précédent, la slovène franchit cette dernière difficulté sous les encouragements et s’en va clipper le relais ! D’une impressionnante facilité, elle avouera quand même avoir pris les bouteilles !

Abordable à vue car dans la filière continuité mais jamais remise en question malgré les (très) nombreux ascensionnistes, “Fish Eye”, équipée et libérée par Chris Sharma en 2009 nous semble une référence dans le niveau. Il pourrait donc s’agir du premier 8c à vue féminin de l’histoire, puisqu’avant Charlotte Durif avait annoncé “Les rois du pétrole” en 2010, voie désormais décotée à 8b+. 10 femmes avaient jusqu’alors réalisé du 8b+ à vue : Katie Brown (“Omaha Beach”), Josune Bereziartu (“Hidrofobia”), Charlotte Durif (“Les rois du pétrole”), Maja Vidmar (“Humildes pa casa”), Sacha DiGiulian (“Omaha Beach”), Kajsa Rosén (“T1 full-equip”), Laura Rogora (“L-mens”), Anak Verhoeven (“Gorillas en la niebla”), Martina Demmel (“Humildes pa casa”) et Vita Lukan (“Geminis”), mais personne n’avait réalisé un 8c.

Il y a quelques années, la championne Slovène avait déjà réalisé de belles croix à Santa Linya avec “Rollito Sharma extension” et “La Fabelita” 8c flash mais n’avait jamais réalisé ce niveau à vue. Janja restant encore quelques jours sur place, il se peut qu’on assiste à d’autres exploits. Comme on reste aussi, on vous tiendra bien évidemment informés !

Incredible! Two days ago in Oliana, Catalonia, Spain, Janja Garnbret has just onsighted the 50m-long endurance classic that is “Fish Eye” 8c! And as luck would have it, we were there too and relished in the Janja show!

And yet, the Slovenian Olympic champion wasn’t quite firing since getting in Catalonia… Yesterday, on her first day at the crag, Janja fared relatively badly in her onsight attempts of ‘Humildes pa casa’ and ‘Gorillas en la Nieba’, both 8b+, as she fell low down. At lunchtime today, for her second day, Janja falls again in ‘Humildes pa casa’, saying she’s short on endurance. A good rest later though, she’s got the bit between her teeth again and walks to ‘Fish eye’.

The first part of the route, a punchy 8a+, poses no problems, and when the time comes to tackle the first boulder crux in the middle of the line, Janja is perfect: she ascends flawlessly, without mistakes and just the right intensity. A few shake-outs later and she finds herself in the upper part of the route, 40 meters off the deck, just under the last, fingery, boulder, which has caused many a dispiriting heartache with this slopy twofingerpocket which inspired the name of the route.

After hesitating in the said boulder where she misreads a sequence, the Slovenian climbs back down to the half-rest below, then, helped by the cheers, finally powers through the last section and clips the chains! Despite her impressive ease, Janja admitted being failry pumped!

Feasible since the route is endurance-based, its grade has never been put in doubt by its many repeaters and “Fish Eye” (bolted and freed by Chris Sharma in 2009) seems to us to be a benchmark in that difficulty. This could therefore turn out to be the first female 8c onsight in history, since Charlotte Durif’s ‘Les rois du pétrole’ (2010), although proposed at 8c, has long since been downgraded to 8b+. 10 women have so far onsighted 8b+: Katie Brown (‘Omaha Beach’), Josune Bereziartu (‘Hidrofobia’), Charlotte Durif (‘Les rois du pétrole’), Maja Vidmar (‘Humildes pa casa’), Sacha DiGiulian (‘Omaha Beach’), Kajsa Rosén (‘T1 full-equip’), Laura Rogora (‘L-mens’) Anak Verhoeven (‘Gorillas en la niebla’), Martina Demmel (‘Humildes pa casa’) and Vita Lukan (‘Geminis’). But no woman had done so at 8c.

Some years ago, Slovenian champion flashed some 8c’s in Santa Linya with “Rollito Sharma extension” and “La Fabelita” but never onsighted 8c. As Janja is set to be here for another few days, it is possible some more feats are on the cards. Since we’re staying too, we will keep you updated if and when!

Deux jours après avoir réalisé “Fish Eye” à vue, news que nous vous relations cet après-midi, nous avons été témoins d’un autre exploit de la part de la championne olympique Janja Garnbret à Oliana aujourd’hui. En forme olympique, Janja réalise cette fois le 8c “American Hustle” à vue, au prix d’un gros combat ! En guise d’échauffement, Janja était allée visiter le bas de “La Dura dura” le 9b+ mythique de la falaise et s’est payée le luxe de faire le fameux crux avec le jeté explosif vers un bidoigt fuyant en épaule !

Après cette fin d’échauffement plutôt bloc, la championne slovène se rabat sur nos conseils sur “American Hustle” 8c de conti de 50 mètres équipé par Sam Elias en 2014 en plein milieu du mur central de la falaise, juste à gauche de “Fish Eye”.

La voie se décompose en un 8a+ d’approche à doigts puis physique, avant un semi-repos sur une écaille et une section très résistante d’une quinzaine de mouvements au milieu qui constitue le crux. Elle se finit par une section plus conti de 20 mètres, environ 8a/+, qui alterne pas de blocs bien toniques avec des mouvements à prise de risques et bonnes décontractions. Après un bon combat dans la section du milieu, grimpant sans faire d’erreurs majeures de lecture et ayant la marge de délayer partout, Janja a eu une hésitation ensuite sur un mouvement puissant sur inversées nécessitant de l’engagement. Mais une fois cette difficulté passée, elle s’est hissée sans encombre vers le relais pour réaliser son 2ème 8c à vue du séjour ! Nous avons filmé une partie du run du sol, et il reste encore un jour de grimpe à Janja, d’autres infos à venir bientôt !

Two days after her onsight of “Fish Eye”, we witnessed another feat by Olympic Gold Medalist Janja Garnbret in Oliana today. Janja was at it again and sent “American Hustle” 8c onsight after a huge fight!
To finish her warm-up, Janja visited the lower part of mythical “La Dura dura” 9b+ and managed to stick the dyno to the 2-finger gaston! Crazy!

After this somewhat bouldery end to her warm-up, the Slovenian champion decided to try “American Hustle”, a 50-meter stamina 8c bolted by Sam Elias in 2014, in the center of the crag.

The route could be described as a fingery then pumpy 8a+ start before a little rest on a flake, leading to a physical resistance section in the middle by way of crux. Then comes the stamina 8a+ finish with some powerful and risky moves, separated by good rests.

After a good fight in the middle, climbing without mistakes and being able to shake out on every move, Janja hesitated at the deadpoint move on underclings. But once she climbed this section, Janja looked comfortable in the crimpy finish to the anchor and bagged her second 8c onsight of the trip! We filmed most of her fight from the ground (soon to be uploaded to our Youtube channel) and don’t forget, Janja still has one climbing day here, so more to come soon we hope!

On vous avait déjà parlé du jeune prodige francilien de 22 ans Killian Chabrier. Ce grimpeur orléanais a quitté ses terres natales il y a 4 ans pour venir s’installer en région Parisienne, précisément à Massy pour s’entraîner et progresser en bloc. Killian vient de délaisser les salles d’entrainement et Bleau le temps de découvrir une des Mecque du bloc helvète, Cresciano. En une semaine sur place, le bilan des courses du trip suisse est flatteur, avec deux répétitions des ultra-classiques de la haute-difficulté mondiale “Dreamtime” et “The Story of Two Worlds” en deux jours de travail chacun, blocs qu’il propose de décoter à 8B+. Il s’en explique ci-dessous.

– Pourquoi avoir choisi ce trip à Cresciano ? Besoin de te frotter à des références ?
Tout d’abord ce trip n’était pas du tout prévu pour moi, je voulais m’entraîner pour les compétitions et n’avais pas prévu de voyager. Une semaine avant de partir, Guillaume Levernier mon coach me dit qu’une des personnes qui devait partir avec lui s’était blessée, et que si ça me chauffait il y avait une place. Je n’ai pas pu résister et j’ai sauté sur l’occasion (je pense que j’ai bien fait) ! J’ai toujours eu envie de faire les classiques qui ont influencé l’histoire de l’escalade ! Donc pour une première fois à Cresciano j’ai voulu essayer des blocs mythiques tels que ceux-ci. Au départ, je me suis donc mis en projet principal “Dreamtime” et en secondaire “The Dagger” à la base, mais qui est très vite devenu “The Story of Two Worlds”.

– Après Clément Lechaptois tu es le 2ème français à rétablir en haut de “Dreamtime”, bloc historique de Cresciano, considéré comme le premier 8C bloc de l’histoire. Qu’as-tu ressenti ?
Vraiment hyper content ! Surtout que la météo était plutôt incertaine, en arrivant je pensais seulement avoir 2 jours pour enchaîner. Lors de ma deuxième séance j’étais très mal embarqué pour le faire, je suis tombé 5-6 fois au grand mouvement qui est le crux. À mon 14ème essai de la séance je me sentais cuit physiquement et j’ai décidé de changer de préhension en mettant ma main gauche un peu plus à droite, et ça l’a fait direct ! Une sensation incroyable car mêlant pression et run a muerte, sûrement un de mes plus beaux souvenirs de grimpe !

– Tu as expédié le bloc en 2 séances. Tu avais déjà expédié « Off the Wagon » en quelques essais. Comment fais-tu pour réaliser des blocs de top niveau mondial en si peu de temps ?
Ahah question assez difficile à répondre ! Je pense plutôt que pour l’instant tous ces blocs n’étaient pas à mon niveau maximum et plutôt dans mon style. J’ai encore la possibilité de faire des erreurs dans mes runs et que ça marche quand même ! Sinon pour préparer ces séances, je regarde beaucoup de vidéos pour avoir un aperçu de toutes les méthodes possibles. En arrivant sur le bloc je touche toute les préhensions pour me familiariser avec. Je mets toujours un essai flash même dans mes projets max car cela ne coûte rien ! Après ce run flash je cale les mouvements et quand j’ai réussi tous les mouvements, même si je ne suis pas hyper calé je mets quelques runs pour essayer d’enchaîner.

– Que penses-tu de “Dreamtime” ?
“Dreamtime” est composé de deux parties, un début très à sensations pour rejoindre le debout, avec un talon dur à tenir que j’ai réussi à apprivoiser très vite et qui n’était pas du tout un crux pour moi. Cette section vaut environ 8A. Puis une deuxième section qui est le debout avec plusieurs méthodes, soit une “envoyade” que j’ai faite car je trouvais ça bien plus joli et dans mon style, soit une traversée sur micro arquées. Puis la fin après le crux est bien plus facile et quasi intombable quand elle est calée. Cette deuxième section, je l’évalue dans les 8A+. Un 8A sur un 8A+ donne quelque chose dans les environs de 8B+ donc j’ai choisi de le mettre à 8B+, après ce n’est que mon ressenti.

– Tu as ensuite expédié aussi « The story of Two worlds » 8C en 2 jours. Raconte-nous.
Pour ce bloc l’histoire est plutôt drôle. Je suis monté au secteur à mon troisième jour de grimpe vraiment fatigué pour essayer “The Dagger”, le 8B/+ de fin. Je me suis échauffé dedans avec Camille Coudert, on a déchiffré assez vite les méthodes et j’ai enchainé à mon deuxième essai du bas, en environ 1h-1h30 max, échauffement compris. Et on s’est rendus compte qu’avec les méthodes de Megos, notre ressenti était que ça devait valoir plus 8A+ que 8B/+. Du coup, après l’avoir enchainé aussi rapidement, j’ai essayé le départ assis. Avec la fatigue j’ai pas pu caler le crux pour rejoindre le debout. À la deuxième séance j’ai très vite calé les mouvements du début, et sur un run pour caler les premiers mouvements je me suis retrouvé dans la fin et là la chute n’était plus une option et j’ai enchainé ! Pour les méthodes j’ai fait quasi exactement comme Megos et j’ai refusé de mettre une genouillère car je trouvais ça bien plus stylé sans ! Mais en échangeant avec Camille sur le début, la genouillère doit peut-être enlever un peu de difficulté au début mais rien de signifiant comparé aux nouvelles méthodes de fin. C’est pour cela que j’ai décidé de le décoter pour le mettre à 8B+, j’ai trouvé cette ligne aussi dure voire un peu plus facile que “Dreamtime” !

– Et le départ bas “low start” de Koyamada en 8C+ ?
Je n’ai pas essayé le départ de Koyamada car bien moins logique que le départ normal de visuel ; ça n’avait pas l’air de rajouter énormément à la suite, peut-être que cela le ferait passer à un 8B+ dur. Mais ce n’est qu’une supposition !

– Tu sembles loin de tes limites. As-tu des projets d’ampleur en milieu naturel pour cet hiver à Bleau ?
Oui, je sens que je suis loin de mes limites, je n’ai pas encore eu de projet où il faudrait que je m’entraîne spécifiquement pour pouvoir y arriver ! Cet hiver j’ai des projets comme “Big Island assis” et “Délire Onirique assis” à Bleau. Et surtout retourner au Val Bavona faire “Off the Wagon assis” et voir le vrai assis sans le wagon, je pense que c’est l’une des plus grosses FA à faire en Suisse, et de plus elle est vraiment dans mon style !

– Penses-tu t’essayer à des voies dures typées bloc pour profiter de ta forme actuelle ?
Mon seul projet en voie pour le moment est “Condé de choc” à Entraygues, un 9a vraiment court avec deux gros pas de bloc. Cette été j’étais vraiment bien dedans et je pense y retourner l’été prochain pour enchaîner !

A while ago we told you about the young Parisian prodigy Killian Chabrier, 22. 4 years ago, he left his home for the greater Paris in order to train and improve further still in bouldering. Killian just gave the shoulder to indoor training and Font for one week in order to discover one of Switzerland’s bouldering meccas, Cresciano. He managed to tick two of the major classics of the area, “Dreamtime” and “The Story of Two Worlds” and suggests a downgrade to 8B+ for both. He explains his thought process below.

– Why did you choose Cresciano? Psyched to check some references?
This trip was quite unplanned for me! I wanted to train for comps and didn’t expect to come here! A week before departure, my coach Guillaume Levernier offered me to join them because one someone picked up an injury. So I couldn’t resist and took the opportunity. I always wanted to try the classics which left a mark on climbing history. So for my first time in Cresciano I tried a few legendary boulders, and decided to select “Dreamtime” as my main project and “The dagger” as the second, but very quickly my second one actually became “The Story of Two Worlds”.

– You climbed the boulder very quickly, in 2 sessions. You also climbed “Off the wagon” on a previous trip in just a few tries. How do you explain your ability to top out extreme boulders so fast?
Aha tough question! I think that the boulders I tried were not at my limit and also suited my style. I can still make mistakes on my goes and send! To prepare my sessions I watch a lot of videos to be clear on all the different methods. At the boulder, I touch every hold to get used to how they feel. I always give a flash burn, even on my big projects because why not! After the flash go, I check all the moves and once I have worked out all of them, even if my betas are not the best, I start from the ground.

– After Clément Lechaptois, you’re only the second French guy to climb “Dreamtime”, a historical testpiece of Cresciano, considered to be the first 8C in bouldering history. How do you feel?
Very happy of course ! The weather forecast was not in our side, getting there I was thinking we would have 2 days of climbing only. In my 2nd session things weren’t shaping up very nicely, I fell 5-6 times on the large move, considered to be the crux. On my 14th go I started to be tired and decided to change my left hand position on the hold, a little bit more to the right and it worked straight away! An incredible feeling mixing pressure and a muerte, perhaps one of my best climbing memories.

– What do you think about “Dreamtime”?
“Dreamtime” could be divided into 2 parts, a start where you need accuracy into the stand, with a tricky heel hook that posed me no troubles though. This part is around 8A. Then the stand part with different betas possible, you can choose the spank, what I did because I found it nicer and in my style, or you can traverse on small crimps. Then the final section is easier, you can’t fall once you know what to do. This second part is around 8A+ for me. So an 8A into an 8A+, in my opinion, gives you something around 8B+, so I chose this grade, but it’s just my opinion.

– You also climbed “The Story of Two Worlds” in 2 days…
For this boulder, the story is funny: I got up to the sector on my third climbing day in a row, I was very tired, in order to check “The dagger”, the final 8B/+. I warmed-up on it with Camille Coudert, we found all the methods very quickly and I did it at my second try from the start in around 1h-1h30. We realised that with Alex Megos’ betas our feeling was climbing something in the 8A+ range, compared to the 8B/+. So after this quick intro, I tried the sit. Due to the tiredness I couldn’t stick the crux to transition into the stand start. On my second session I quickly found my own betas in the sit, and on a run primarily meant to check my betas I surprisingly found myself in the top section. The fall wasn’t an option and I sent it! For the betas, I did exactly the same as Alex Megos and refused to put on a kneepad, because I found the boulder more pleasant without. Talking with Camille about the start, the kneepad could probably shave off some difficulty at the beginning but nothing significant compared to the new ending. That’s why I decided to downgrade it to 8B+. I found this line to be about the same difficulty as “Dreamtime”, maybe even a little bit easier.

– Did you try Koyamada’s low 8C+ version?
No, I didn’t try this start. It’s less logical than the normal start aesthetically speaking, and it seems to add nothing special, but maybe with this start you can climb a hard 8B+. But it’s only a wild guess!

– You seem far from your limit. Have you got some big projects in the pipeline in Font?
Yes, I feel I can climb harder. I have not yet put my hands on a project where I needed to train specifically to send. This winter, “Big Island sit” (“aka “Soudain Seul”) and “Délire onirique assis” are on my shortlist. I want to return to Val Bavona to try “Off the wagon sit” and check out the real sit without the wagon, one of the biggest first ascents left in Switzerland, plus it suits my style perfectly!

– What about some powerful extreme routes?
My only sport climbing project for the moment is “Condé de choc” in Entraygues, Briançonnais, a short 9a with 2 bouldery sections. This summer I felt quite well on it and I think I will return next summer to send it!

Une King Line de plus dans la besace de Mathieu Bouyoud ! En effet, l’expérimenté falaisiste chambérien a coché hier lors d’un combat titanesque une des voies majeures de la falaise d’Oliana, “Papichulo” 9a+. Mathieu a fait jouer toute sa science de la grimpe pour faire un run qui se rapproche de la perfection, et c’est une rare fois où nous avons entendu Mathieu crier dans une voie d’escalade, lui qui nous a habitué à dérouler les voies dures presque en sifflotant !

“Papichulo” remonte le mur central d’Oliana sur près de 50 mètres dans des coulées bleues sculptées, à coup sûr une des voies les plus belles d’Europe dans ce niveau, souvent associée par les grimpeurs forts à “La Rambla” et “Biographie” pour constituer une trilogie de rêve de voies sportives majeures. Après un départ très bloc environ 8b/+ et un repos total sur une vire où on peut s’asseoir, les hostilités commencent avec 15 mètres de 8c/+ très résistants jusqu’à un semi-repos, avant un pas de bloc constitué d’un derviche et d’un mouvement dynamique difficile à négocier car demandant de la précision et un travail chirurgical de préhensions (environ 7A bloc). S’en suit une boucle résistante puis un final conti qui alterne pas de bloc et repos, où il ne vaut mieux pas mollir…

“Ma première montée dans “Papichulo” remonte à juin 2019 juste après avoir enchaîné “Esclatamasters”. J’ai ensuite réalisé 10 jours en novembre 2019, une semaine fin décembre et 10 jours en février 2020, où j’étais assez proche, tombant dans la boucle. Malheureusement l’épidémie de Covid ne m’a pas permis de terminer ce chantier immédiatement, alors j’ai collé une photo de la falaise sur mon frigo histoire de me remémorer chaque jour ce projet et entretenir ma motivation ! Juste de reparler de ce projet avec Axel Ballay me redonnait envie de revenir finir le travail. “Papichulo” est un des plus beaux 9a+ à faire, l’endroit est incroyable, le bombé bleu est parfait. Une voie qui me convient bien, à doigts et continue. J’ai sorti le run parfait pour dompter la bête.”

Au 3ème jour de travail cette semaine et au 4ème séjour, Mathieu réussit donc son rêve du moment et coche son 2ème 9a+ de l’année après sa proposition à La Balme en septembre dernier, “Team Frisouille”. Comme le signale Toni Mas Buchaca, photographe local non-grimpeur de Peramola mais passionné par la falaise, cela faisait quelque temps que personne n’avait clippé le relais. Le dernier était David Firnenburg en janvier 2020. Mathieu signe la 24ème ascension de cette voie mythique, son 3ème 9a+ et sa 25ème voie en 9ème degré. Une année 2021 pleine pour lui !

Another King Line under Mathieu Bouyoud’s belt! Experimented rockclimber from Chambéry, France just ticked yesterday one of the must of Oliana, “Papichulo” 9a+ after a huge fight. Mathieu has used all his climbing science to make a try close to perfection and finally clip the anchor. It’s rare to heard him screaming in a climbing route, usually used to make easy some hard stuff…

“Papichulo” is located in the center of the crag, 50 meters long in a blue scarved wall, for sure one of the best sportclimbing routes in this range in Europe! This route is often considered by pro climbers like a part of a dream sportclimbing trilogy with “La Rambla” and “Biographie”. After a bouldery 15 meters start in the 8b/+ range and a complete rest on a ledge where you can sit, the business is starting with another 15 meters of powerful and fingery 8c/+ until a little rest. Then the main difficulties arrive with a 7A boulder whith a big cross and a deadpoint move, a resistant loop and a stamina finish, where you should stay determined.

“My first check in Papichulo” was in June 2019, just after my send of “Esclatamasters”. I did a second trip in november 2019, a week for Christmas 2019 and 10 days in Fébruary 2020, where I was close, falling in the loop. Unfortunately Covid pandemia didn’t allowed me to finish this project, so I stick a postcard of the crag on my fridge as reminder, to keep the motivation high! Just have a talk about the projects with friends who where trying too like Axel Ballay gives me a lot of hope. “Papichulo” is one of the best 9a+ to climb, the place is incredible, this blue line perfect. A route which suits my style, fingery and sustained. I did the perfect try to conquer it.”

At his 3rd day back on the route , and during his 4th trip, Mathieu’s dream came true, and he climbs his second 9a+ this year. Remember he did the first ascent of “Team Frisouille” in La Balme last September. Toni Mas Bucacha, passionated local photographer from Peramola keeps our attention: it was long time the anchor of this gem have not been clipped. Last time was German David Firnenburg in January 2020. Mathieu signs here the 24th ascent of this mythical route, his 3rd 9a+ and his 25th 9th grade route. A full 2021 year for him!

Décidément, les compétitrices slovènes sont en forme cet automne ! Après les prouesses de Vita Lukan et Janja Garnbret en Espagne, voici que la jeune Sara Copar, 16 ans, championne du Monde cadette de difficulté, fait parler d’elle en falaise ! Sara vient de réussir son premier 8c+ au pays avec “Histerija”, une classique du mur central de Misja Pec ! La voie fait 32 mètres de long, avec un départ sur colos de 15 mètres et un repos, puis un furieux pas de bloc sur pinces, arquées et inversées avant un final résistant sur réglettes. C’est la 4ème féminine de la voie après Natalija Gros, Mina Markovic et Vita Lukan.

The Slovenian women are definitely in good shape this fall! After the feats of Vita Lukan and Janja Garnbret in Spain, now it’s the turn of young Sara Copar, 16, recently lead Youth A world champion to crush at the crag! Sara just completed her first 8c+ at home with “Histerija”, a classic route located in the central part of the Misja Pec crag! The route is 32 meters long, with a 15-meter start on tufas followed by a rest, then a furious bouldery section on pinches, crimps and underclings before a resistant final on crimps. It is the 4th female ascent of the route after Natalija Gros, Mina Markovic and Vita Lukan.

Cela faisait longtemps que “Chilam Balam” n’avait pas été réalisé. Proposé à 9b+ en 2003 par Barnabé Fernandez, mais revu à 9a+/b après quelques répétitions (Ondra, Bouin Andrada, Marin,…) ce monstre de continuité qui remonte l’arche de la grotte de Villanueva Del Rosario (80 mètres de développé!) empile un 8c+ marqué par un pas d’épaule tonique avec des sections résistantes sur concrétions majeures environ 8c+ avant un pas de bloc sommital très à doigts qui constitue le crux final et ultime. Depuis 2015 seul le norvégien Sindre Saether l’avait refait en 2019 après 85 jours de travail ! Présent depuis 20 jours sur place, c’est le grimpeur Jonatan Flor qui clippe cette fois le relais. Une 2ème King line de plus à son actif, lui qui avait coché un peu plus tôt cette année la célèbre “Rambla” à Siurana. Ce n’est pas le premier séjour sur place de Jonathan, dernier répétiteur de “La Planta de Shiva” en décembre 2020. Il signe donc ici la 7ème ascension de cette voie mythique en 18 ans !

Since 2015, only the Norwegian Sindre Saether has climbed it (in 2019, after 85 days of work)! In the area for the last 20 days, Jonatan Flor finally clipped the anchor yesterday. A second King line under his belt, since he has ticked the famous “Rambla” in Siurana earlier this year. This is not the first stay in Villanueva Del Rosario for Jonathan, who is the last repetitor of “La Planta de Shiva” in December 2020. He is therefore signing the 7th ascent of this mythical route in 18 years!
