Deux années après la première ascension de “Bibliographie”, le mutant allemand continue de proposer des premières ascensions extrêmes sur la falaise mythique de Céüse ! Cette fois, Alex vient de réussir la première ascension d’un projet équipé par Chris Sharma en 2012 au secteur Face de Rat, “Ratstaman Vibrations”. Essayée entre autres par Lucien Martinez, Seb Bouin et Charles Albert, cette voie requiert une escalade particulièrement puissante au milieu du panneau très déversant quasi dépourvu de volumes.
Alex commente via Instagram :
“J’ai essayé un coup la voie la première fois que je suis venu à Céüse, en 2014. Puis en 2017 je suis investi dans “Bibliographie” qui m’a pris quelques saisons. En 2021 j’ai mis un autre essai dans “Ratstaman Vibrations” et je l’ai réalisée en 3 parties au 2ème jour, et je ne suis pas revenu jusqu’à il y a 3 semaines. Je suis arrivé juste après la coupe du monde de Chamonix, et après 5 jours dedans, j’étais proche de faire la voie, mais je n’ai pas pu concrétiser. La coupe du monde de Briançon a agi comme une pause bienvenue, et après une semaine de compète et d’entrainement sans faire la fameuse marche d’approche je suis revenu à Céüse. Le premier jour de mon retour je me suis senti très bien, et j’ai réalisé la voie à mon second jour ! “Ratstaman est une voie mythique pour moi. Équipée par Chris Sharma il y a longtemps sur une des meilleures falaises au Monde, essayée par pas mal de forts grimpeurs, mais toujours pas réalisée depuis ces années. Pour sûr une des meilleures voies que j’ai grimpées dans le niveau 9b.”

Two years after the first ascent of “Bibliographie”, Alex Megos is back in Céüse for some business with a new extreme first ascent. This time, Alex just freed an old project bolted by Chris Sharma (in 2012) in Face de Rat overhang, “Ratstaman Vibrations”. Tried by strong climbers like Lucien Martinez, Seb Bouin and Charles Albert, this route is offers a really powerful climbing in a massive overhang without volumes. “Already the first time I came to Ceüse back in 2014 I had a look at this route, but never decided to actually try. I got busy with Bibliographie in 2017, which took me a few seasons to finish.
In 2021 I gave Ratstaman another go and climbed it in three parts on my second day, but didn’t go back for it until three weeks ago.
Right after the World Cup in Chamonix I headed to Ceüse to properly try the route. After five days I got really close to doing it, but couldn’t quite piece it together in the end. The World Cup in Briançon came as a welcomed break from hiking up the hill and after a week of competing and training I returned to Ceüse. First day back on the route felt really good and already on the second day of this trip I had the perfect send go!
Ratstaman is one of those mythical routes for me. Bolted by Chris Sharma a while ago at one of the best crags in the world, tried by a few strong people, but not been done for many years.
For sure one of the best routes I’ve ever done or tried in the 9b range.“

Après “Iron Curtain”, la seconde partie de “Thor’s hammer” et la première partie de “Change”, Seb Bouin semble inarrêtable à Flatanger (Norvège) avec la première ascension du “Nordic Marathon” pour pas moins de 130 mètres d’escalade ! La voie combine “Nordic Plumber” 8c avec la seconde partie de “Thor’s hammer” (9a+) et Seb annonce 9b/+. Voici son commentaire laissé sur les réseaux.

“Quand Adam m’a parlé de ce projet qui traverse la grotte du sol jusqu’au sommet, j’ai immédiatement été motivé par cette idée. Le but principal de ce séjour était d’aller voir ce monstre. Cette idée était vraiment énorme, c’est définitivement le type de challenge qui me parle. Comme je l’ai expliqué précédemment, il y avait 3 entrées possibles pour ce faire, avec différents niveaux : par “Nordic Plumber” 8c, “Thorshammer” 9a ou “Move” 9b/+. Quel que soit le départ, la suite propose un 9a+ très teigneux (la seconde partie de “Thorshammer”) avec un bon crux à la fin, à 80 mètres de haut. Mon but ultime est de réaliser l’enchainement avec la combinaison la plus difficile par “Move” (9b/+). Les précédentes années, j’ai déjà réalisé 4 trips pour faire “Move” 9b/+. Imaginez démarrer là-dedans et finir par un 9a+ bien teigneux. Je sais de toute façon que cet objectif sera trop dur sur ce trip, donc j’ai décidé de partir dans la voie la plus facile “Nordic Plumber” pour avoir une idée du challenge et être prêt psychologiquement pour la version dure. Après avoir réalisé la seconde partie en 9a+ en partant au jumar, j’ai essayé du sol en partant dans “Nordic Plumber”. Cela change énormément la fin, avec les avant-bras farcis pour le dernier bloc à doigts après 80 mètres d’escalade. Je suis tombé là plusieurs fois et je suis tombé aussi précédemment dans des pas avant.
La taille même de la voie la rend dure mentalement. Vous pouvez faire un essai tous les 2 jours. C’est tellement d’escalade dans un essai intense que tu peux pas mettre 2 runs par jour. Ensuite, si tu veux être le plus frais possible, tu dois faire un jour de repos entre. C’était donc assez difficile psychologiquement de ne mettre qu’un essai tous les 2 jours. La pression était si forte dans ce dernier crux.
Le tirage était aussi infernal. Même si j’avais changé de corde une fois dans la voie, j’ai du me décorder pour faire en solo les 5/10 derniers mètres très faciles. “Nordic Marathon” est mon pur style : endurance, gros mouvements… La ligne m’a attiré pour sa taille. Merci encore à Adam pour l’idée.”

After “Iron curtain”, “Thorshammer L2” and “Change part 1”, Seb Bouin continues his rampage in Flatanger (Norway) with the first ascent of “Nordic Marathon” for 130 meters of hardcore climbing! The route combines “Nordic Plumber” 8c and “Thor’s hammer L2” 9a+. Here is his comment left on social media.

“When Adam told me about his project to cross over the cave, and go from the ground to the summit, I was immediately amazed by this idea. The main goal of my trip was to check out this monster. The idea was big, really big. But it’s definitely the kind of challenge which attracts me. As I explained in my previous post, there are three possible starting routes, each offering a different grade. Starting with: “Nordic Plumber” 8c, “Thor’s Hammer” 9a et “Move” 9b/+. Whatever the start, it is then followed by a cruxy 9a+ (Pitch 2 of Thor’s Hammer), with a repoint crux at the end (at 80m). My ultimate goal would be to do it by the hardest possible combination: “Move”.

In the previous years, I already spent four travels to do Move (9b/+). Imagine starting from this one and finishing by a cruxy 9a+… However, I knew this would be too hard for a single trip. So first I decided to start from the easiest line (Nordic Plumber 8c) in order to get an idea of the challenge, and to be psychologically ready for the end when I start trying the harder version.

After first working and sending the second (9a+) section by jumarring into it, I then started trying from the ground, trying to link into it from “Nordic Plumber”.

It changed so much the end. Coming into the 9a+, with my arms already so pumped in the last crimpy crux after 80m of climbing was insane.

I was falling there a few times. And then falling on the previous cruxes as well.

The sheer size of the route makes it hard mentally. You can have one go every two days. It’s so much climbing, in one intense burst that you simply can’t give two goes in a day. Then if you want to be as fresh as possible, you need a rest day in between. So it was quite hard psychologically to only give it one burn every two days. The pressure felt so high in this last crux.

The rope drag was also insane. Even if I had already switched ropes once during the route – I had to untie my knot and free-solo the last 5/10 meters (really easy climbing). “Nordic Marathon” is my pure climbing style. Endurance, big moves,…

The line attracted me by its size. Thanks Adam Ondra for sharing this idea!”

“You cannot understand” : tel est le nom de la dernière vidéo consacrée au falaisiste belge Seb Berthe aux prises avec le célèbre 9b de “Fight or flight”. Le réalisateur Simon Maurissen a suivi Seb à Oliana au printemps 2021 et documente le processus de travail de la voie qui malheureusement s’est avéré infructueux. Une vidéo rafraîchissante sur la recherche de la haute difficulté, faite de hauts et de bas.

Filmmaker Simon Maurissen followed Seb in Oliana at Spring 2021 and documented the process in the route, unfortunately with no cigar. En mars dernier, Adam Ondra a réalisé ce qu’il présente comme la voie la plus dure d’Italie, “Wonderland” 9b/+ sur le site de Terra Promessa (Arco), la jugeant donc d’un niveau supérieur à “Erebor”. Voici la vidéo et le commentaire de l’intéressé suite à cette croix qu’il estime être le point d’orgue de son année escalade 2022.

“Même si la falaise s’appelle Terra Promessa, je n’avais pas pensé auparavant qu’elle accueillerait la voie la plus difficile d’Arco et d’Italie. Les voies dures de niveau 8b/8c ont été développées principalement par Reini Scherer à la fin des années 90 et depuis le développement de cette falaise s’était quasiment arrêté.
Il y avait encore pas mal d’endroits où le rocher était vierge, mais la question était de savoir si ça grimperait en libre. Alfredo Webber, une fois de plus, a su déceler cette merveilleuse ligne, s’est motivé et a équipé la voie, mais le point d’interrogation concernait le tout début. J’ai trouvé une boucle légèrement à gauche en utilisant quelques pinces plates et de minuscules arquées, j’ai bougé 3 spits, et il est devenu évident que la ligne était possible !
Nous avons travaillé le projet quelques jours à l’automne avec Stefano Ghisolfi. Finalement, j’ai senti que j’étais assez proche de faire la voie, mais malgré cet hiver extrêmement sec, la falaise n’est pas vraiment un spot d’hiver et la colo du crux a de plus en plus mouillé. La voie a séché en mars et après quelques jours de travail, j’ai fait la première ascension en libre de “Wonderland”, une de mes premières ascensions dont je suis le plus fier.
En ce qui concerne la cotation, je sais que la voie est considérablement plus difficile que la plupart des 9b, mais c’est difficile de savoir si elle franchit vraiment la barrière du 9b+…”

In March, Adam Ondra did the first ascent of what he called the hardest route in Italy with “Wonderland” 9b/+ located in Terra Promessa, Arco. Here is the video of the send and his comment about his “biggest achievement this year so far”!

“Even though the crag is called Terra Promessa (Promised Land), I hadn’t thought that it would once host Arco’s and Italy’s hardest route. The hard routes around 8b and 8c were developed mainly by Reini Scherer in the late 90s and since the development of this crag has mostly stopped.

There were still quite a few spots where the rock was untouched, but the question was if it would go. Alfredo Webber, once again, saw this wonderful line, put the effort, and placed the bolts, but the question mark was about the very beginning. I found a detour slightly to the left using a few very slopy pinches and tiny crimps, replaced 3 bolts, and it was obvious that line was possible !

We worked on the route for a few days in the autumn with Stefano Ghisolfi. Eventually, I felt I was quite close to sending, but despite this winter being extremely dry, this crag is not exactly winter crag and the crucial tufa kept seeping. The route dried up in March and after a few days of work, I did the first free no-fall ascent through “Wonderland”, some of my proudest first ascents.

Regarding the grade, I know it is considerably harder than most of the 9b’s, but if it really breaks into the 9b+ barrier, it is really difficult to know…”

Intitulée “La perfection du mouvement”, cette belle video met en scène le falaisiste espagnol Jorge Diaz-Rullo dans “El Bon combat”, la King Line de Chris Sharma à La Cova del Ocell en Catalogne. Jorge revient sur le processus dans la voie qui a été dure à conquérir, avec cette satanée lolotte en guise de crux qui l’aura fait chuter tant de fois… Jorge en a profité pour cocher aussi le bloc de “Catalan witness the fitness” et la traversée de “Super Blood Wolf Moon”. En tout, pas moins de 32 jours sur place en pleine période Covid et plus de 50 essais ont été nécessaires pour faire la croix ! Un beau documentaire signé Adri Martinez !

Eder Lomba Lopez de Ipiña , grimpeur basque habitant à Sheffield, vient de réaliser la seconde ascension de “Rainman” 9b à Malham Cove. Considérée comme la voie sportive la plus dure d’Angleterre et libérée en 2017 par Steve McClure, “Rainman” connecte les parties dures de deux 9a que Eder avait déjà réalisés auparavant, “Rainshadow” et “Batman” avant de finir dans “Bat Route”. Sur 8a.nu, Eder estime à 46 jours le nombre de séances de travail avant de répéter la voie qui était restée invaincue en 5 ans, sans compter les 30 séances nécessaires pour réaliser les 9a auparavant, soit un véritable siège ! Basque country climber Eder Lomba Lopez de Ipiña, who lives in Sheffield, just claimed the second ascent of “Rainman” 9b, Malham Cove. Freed by Steve McClure in 2017, this line is considered to be the hardest sportclimbing route in the UK. “Rainman” is a link between the hardest part of “Rainshadow” and “Batman” (both 9a and both previously climbed by Eder) before finishing in “Bat route” 8c. According to 8a.nu, Eder spent 46 days working this unrepeated route, after having spent 30 days on the 9a before… Quite the siege! here is the uncut video of the ascent!

C’est dans le secteur historique de Orgon Canal que 3 jeunes forts grimpeurs se sont réunis pour grimper, avec une voie dure chacun à la clé et de superbes perfs. Bien que les voies soient quasi intégralement trafiquées, les challenges ne manquent pas n’en demeurent pas moins ultimes…
Le plus agé et expérimenté, Loïc Zehani, 20 ans, libère “Chikane” qu’il propose à 9b.
“C’est une voie qui démarre par “L’irrévérence” ( à gauche de “Macumba”) et après 10 mouvements teigneux sur réglettes, tu rejoins à gauche un projet “Cévennes évasion”. Après un clippage très dur, arrive une très belle section bloc sur petites prises plates avec notamment au milieu de cette section un talon qui m’aura fait tomber pas mal de fois. Puis sans décontraction, suit une autre section bloc un peu moins dure mais assez aléatoire, avec notamment un dynamique sur bidoigt et un balant à retenir. Et ça résiste jusqu’à la fin pour un total d’une trentaine de mouvements.
Ça m’a pris entre 15 et 20 séances soit une quarantaine d’essais. Il reste encore quelques trucs extrêmes au Canal dont “Cévennes évasion” et une grande traversée qui démarre par “Sachidananda”.”
C’est le second 9b annoncé par Loïc après “Obsession”.

Victor Guillermin, 16 ans, réalise la 3ème ascension de “Sachidananda” après Gérome Pouvreau et Loïc pour son premier 9a+. Cette voie combine un 8c physique et un pas de bloc en 7C+. Dans une interview chez Grimper Magazine, Victor confie qu’il projetait cette voie depuis environ un an, avec 18 journées passées dans la voie avant la réussite.

Enfin, juste avant l’essai victorieux de Victor, le jeune Sudiste en forme, Maho Normand a réalisé un nouveau 8c+ avec la classique du “Bronx”, vidéo ci-dessous.

It’s in the historical French crag of Orgon Canal that 3 young guns met for a climb, with a hard line for each and superb sends all around. Despite many manufactured holds here, hard challenges are easy to find and ultimate routes are awaiting FAs…
The oldest of the 3 and most experienced, Loïc Zehani, 20, freed “Chikane” and proposed 9b.
“It’s a route starting with “L’irreverence” (left of the classic “Macumba”) and after 10 tenuous moves on crimps, you join the project “Cévennes Evasion”. After a hard clip, it’s time for a nice boulder section on slopers with a heelhook which caused me to fall a lot. Then, without rest, you start another boulder section with a dyno to a two-finger pocket and a big cut-loose. It’s very resistant with 30 moves in total. It took me 15/20 sessions, or 40 tries. Some hard lines are waiting to be freed there, in particular the “Cévennes evasion” project and a long traverse starting in “Sachidananda”.
It’s Loïc’s second 9b first ascent after “Obsession”.

Victor Guillermin, 16, did the 3rd ascent of “Sachidananda” after Gérome Pouvreau and Loïc, and it’s his first 9a+. This route combines a very physical 8c with a 7C+ boulder crux. In an interview for Grimper Magazine, Victor said he had been projecting the line for a year, with 18 climbing sessions on the route before the send. In addition, young gun Maho Normand repeated the classic 8c+ “Le Bronx”. Videos of the 2 last sends can be found above.

A perfectly cut, steep and exposed line in the vicinity of Arco (Italy) with perfect blue and grey limestone and impeccable tufas, has attracted me since I first noticed it. In 2012, I could bolt the last great line to the right of the wall. “A series of 3 beautiful tufa features, with just enough holds in between them. But once the last tufa finishes, it remained a mystery. I bolted it, but I could not really think of any sequence to make that section climbable. I abandoned the project, and 10 years later, I was back to see if something had changed. With a new perspective and experience, I could finally see a way how to pass through this section while I got also distracted by a bit easier variation, which turned out to be not easy at all.  Watch the story of “Bomba” 9b, and it’s a slightly easier variation of “Bombardino” 9a+/ 9b in the new video! Featuring also Jakob Schubert, Pietro del Pra and Alfredo Webber. It was a great process of spending there great days with my friends, bolting together, being motivated to deal with often freezing conditions, and sharing the beta. Big thanks go to everybody who was part of the process!”

Et les croix se sont accumulées tès rapidement ! Découvrez-le en action dans “Ace of Spade” (9a+) dans l’Utah qu’il était très proche de flasher avec un flow impressionnant, ou encore ne faisant qu’une bouchée de certains blocs extrêmes des US “Box Therapy”, “Gran Illusion” (8C+) ou encore “Pegasus” à Joe’s Valley (8C). Sean monte encore en puissance le printemps dernier avec quelques victoires en coupe du Monde, une en bloc à Salt Lake, puis deux autres en diff’ à Villars et Chamonix en début d’été avant d’aller conquérir “Bibliographie” (9b+) à Céüse. Un beau film de Ben Neilson.

Adam Ondra profite actuellement d’Arco et de ses voies dures sur un long séjour avant de bientôt tenir le biberon ! Un peu fâché par l’épée d’ “Excalibur” (possible 9c ?) qu’il n’a toujours pas vaincue, Adam se venge au fleuret avec la première ascension de “Wonderland” au secteur Terra promessa, un 9b “dur” qu’il hésite à affubler d’un +. Plus difficile pour les moins grands que lui, le Tchèque envisage même de sortir le slash pour la voie avec 9b/b+, ce qui en ferait la plus dure d’Arco (Ghisolfi ne lui en voudra pas pour la décote d'”Erebor”). “Wonderland” a été équipée par Alfredo Weber et à l’automne dernier Adam en a proposé un départ plus naturel (ainsi que rajouté quelques plaquettes). Bien que calé en novembre, il a dû attendre mars pour que la voie sèche et soit réalisable.

On en vient à se demander quelle partie de l’iceberg “Wonderland” donne à voir. Depuis l’assaut des trois mousquetaires (Ondra, Ghisolfi et Schubert) contre “Excalibur”, le Tchèque semble à nouveau monter en puissance. Des vidéos récentes le montrent dans un de ses exercices favoris, le à-vue (jusqu’à 8c au secteur Pizarra) et les voies dans le 9 tombent comme des mouches: “Sprengstoff” 9a (Lorüns), “Guerriero del Futuro” 9a (Covolo), “Bombardino” 9a+/b FA (hotel Olivo), “Bomba” 9b FA (hotel Olivo) et tutti quanti !

Si “Excalibur” ne lui convient pas, rien ne dit qu’un autre 9c potentiel n’occupe pas les véritables efforts d’Ondra, qui décidément enchaîne les voies dans le “ventre mou” du 9 avec une vitesse frôlant la précipitation !

Adam Ondra is currently enjoying Arco and its extremes lines, before holding the baby bottles! A little aggrieved by the ‘Excalibur’ sword (9c potential?) that dares resist him, Adam fences his way through the first ascent of ‘Wonderland’ at the Terra Promessa sector, a hard 9b for which the + is very close. Harder for the more vertically challenged than him, the Czech seems to have settled for 9b/b+, and that would made it the hardest in Arco (Ghisolfi won’t hold his downgrade of ‘Erebor’ against him, right?). ‘Wonderland’ was bolted by Alfredo Weber and last autumn, Ondra proposed a more natural beginning and added a few bolts.

What part of the iceberg is ‘Wonderland’ showing? Since the unsuccessful siege of ‘Excalibur’ by the three musketeers (Ghisolfi, Schubert and Ondra), the Czech seems to go from strength to strength. Recent videos show him in one of his favourite exercises, onsighting up to 8c and routes in the 9th grade are falling like flies: “Sprengstoff” 9a (Lorüns), “Guerriero del Futuro” 9a (Covolo), “Bombardino” 9a+/b FA (hotel Olivo), “Bomba” 9b FA (hotel Olivo) e tutti quanti!

If ‘Excalibur’ does not suit him, nothing says he’s not investing some valuable time and effort into another potential 9c…

“Arenauta” 9b, c’est fait pour Ghisolfi ! Le site de Sperlonga, sur la côte entre Rome et Naples, abrite une grotte connue pour ses lignes corsées que Stefano a déjà visitée plusieurs fois, la dernière il y a de ça huit ans pour “Grandi Gesti” 8c+.

En ce début 2022, il est retourné dans la grotte pour travailler un vieux projet quasiment horizontal sur 20m, équipé par Giuliano Tarquini en 2002, que Laura Rogora aurait essayé en vain. Lors de sa première visite, Ghisolfi s’est rendu compte que ses mollets n’encaissaient pas la charge pour bloquer les genoux et délayer. Un problème qui rappelle Ondra dans “Silence”, tiens.

C’est lors de la deuxième fournée, les mollets dûment raffermis, que l’Italien est venu à bout de la voie, qu’il surnomme “Arenauta” et propose à 9b. On notera quand même que dans son échelle de cotations perso, Stefano en fait un “Tribolo ma passo” (je galère mais je passe?).

Si la cotation est confirmée, “Arenauta” deviendrait la voie la plus dure des sud et centre de la Botte.

Pour une idée de la voie, voici la vidéo d’un essai vieille de quelques jours en plus de la vidéo qu’on vous avait déjà relayé il y a une semaine. Après “Erebor” et “Lonely Planet” (sans oublier “One Slap”, “Queen line” ou “Lapsus”), Stefano continue de proposer des premières ascensions extrêmes en Italie, et de dessiner les contours du haut-niveau dans son pays.

“Arenauta” 9b, first ascent by Ghisolfi! The Sperlonga crag, on the coast between Rome and Naples, houses a famous cave known for its hard lines that Stefano has visited a few times, the last 8 years ago for ‘Grandi Gesti’ 8c+.

In early 2022, the Italian returned to the cave to check out an old project consisting of a virtually horizontal 20m-long roof, bolted by Giuliano Tarquini in 2002, that Laura Rogora has apparently tried, in vain. During his first visit, Ghisolfi realised his calves weren’t able to sustain the effort necessary to kneebar and shake out. An issue reminiscent of Ondra in ‘Silence’.

It is on his return, his calves duly prepared, that the Arco man freed the project, to which he gave the name ‘Arenauta’ and proposed as 9b. Let it be known that in his personal grading scale, Stefano gave it ‘Tribolo ma passo’ (I struggle but I send?).

If the grade is confirmed, ‘Arenauta’ would be the hardest line in central and southern Italy.

For an idea of the route, watch above a video of an attempt that is only a few days old, in addition to the one we shared last week. After ‘Erebor’ and ‘Lonely Planet’ (not to mention ‘One Slap’, ‘Queen line’ or ‘Lapsus’), Ghisolfi continues to churn out extreme first ascents in Italy, and to shape the top level in his home country.

En fin d’année dernière, Jorge Diaz-Rullo libérait “Café Solo” 9b dans l’impressionnant dévers de La Finestra à Margalef. Cette voie est la variante de sortie facile de gauche de son super projet “Café Columbia” qui propose une sortie plus directe avec un crux supplémentaire autour du 8B bloc après les difficultés de “Café Solo”. Dans la video suivante Diaz-Rullo nous présente son run d’enchainement de “Café Solo” et son travail de la suite des difficultés dans son super-projet qui s’annonce particulièrement corsé ! At the end of 2021, Jorge Diaz-Rullo freed “Café Solo” 9b in the massive wall of Raco de La Finestra, Margalef, Catalunya. This route is the easier left exit of his super-project “Café Columbia” with a direct exit and a top crux around 8B boulder after the difficulties of the 9b… In the video below, follow Jorge in his first ascent and discover the difficulties of his main project. On avait laissé le crack Autrichien à Siurana après sa réalisation du triptyque du secteur “La Capella”. C’est à Eremo di San Paolo, Arco en Italie que Jakob Schubert refait surface ce début d’année avec une nouvelle réalisation éclair, celle de “Erebor” 9b. C’est déjà la 4ème ascension de la voie après Ghisolfi, Rogora et Ondra. Il est arrivé une petite mésaventure à Jakob, qui, a cassé une prise de pied en crochetage talon juste sous la chaine, ce qui lui a valu un beau vol plané. Il a empoché la voie à l’essai suivant en trouvant une méthode alternative plus dure à cet endroit, mais ne changeant pas le niveau.
Au vu de la facilité avec laquelle il répète les voies en 9a+ et 9b ici et là (9 réalisations en 9b et +) on serait curieux de le voir sortir des standards et de sa zone de confort en falaise, en essayant des voies plus dures, moins répétées ou proposer lui aussi des premières ascensions vraiment extrêmes. Qui vivre verra !

We left the Austrian machine in Siurana after his send of the triptych of the sector “La Capella”. He is back again this weekend in Eremo di San Paolo, Arco, Italy with a new quick send of “Erebor” 9b. It is already the 4th ascent of the route after Ghisolfi, Rogora and Ondra. A little mishap happened to Jakob, who broke a foothold while pressing hard on a right heelhook just below the anchor and as a result took a good whipper. He immediately found a new, harder, beta which in his eyes doesn’t change the grade, and climbed the route at his next go.
In view of Jakob’s margin when it comes to routes in the 9a+ and 9b range (9 sends of 9b and +) we would be curious to see him venture away from the established standards of rock climbing and out of his comfort zone, with harder routes that are also less repeated, or by claiming extreme first ascents. We will see in the future!

Adam Ondra a réalisé une belle croix à la maison juste avant Noël la première ascension de “Taurus”, 9b, un projet très bloc qu’il avait sur la falaise de Byci Skala proche de Brno en République Tchèque. Les difficultés principales sont contenues dans les 9 premiers mouvements de la voie qu’Adam estime autour du 8C+ bloc (!) avant un 8b final qu’il l’aura fait tomber une fois deux jours auparavant à cause de l’onglée. Adam estime que ce pas de bloc de départ est le problème de bloc où il a passé le plus de temps en escalade… La falaise fermant temporairement pour nidification le 1er janvier, Adam parachève ce projet au bon moment !

Il commente sur les réseaux vidéo à l’appui :
“La principale difficulté réside dans la tenue d’un plat main gauche incliné à 45° sur un calcaire zéro adhérence et sortir du talon-pointe. Ensuite tu choppes un rasoir teigneux main droite, une inver plate main gauche et un dynamique final sur une bonne prise. À la fois puissant et technique en même temps, très à conditions et très peu inspirant ? Je ne pense pas, j’ai apprécié le processus. Je suis content d’avoir fini les projets de la partie basse de Byci Skala, la prochaine saison l’heure est venue de faire un tour au niveau supérieur. Les lignes sont toutes aussi bloc mais plus longues et probablement plus dures !”

“Taurus” serait la seconde proposition extrême du pays, Adam ayant déjà libéré “Vasil Vasil” 9b+ à Sloup, fin 2013.

Adam Ondra just added a new tick at home just before Christmas with the first ascent of “Taurus”, 9b, a very boudery project at Byci Skala, Brno, Czech Republic. The main difficulties are located in the first 9 moves at around 8C+ boulder (!) before a final 8b where he fell once 2 days before due to numb fingers. Adam was happy to finish it by the end of the year, because the crag closes on January 1st due to bird nesting.

Adam comments the climb:
“The first 9 moves are surely an 8C+ boulder problem and if I consider it a boulder problem, it is probably the one that took me the most time ever. The whole crag closes on January 1 due to the birds nesting, so the pressure was real!
The whole climb revolves around an insane left-hand sloper, which is around 45 degrees with zero friction limestone and getting the left heel-toe-cam out. Then getting one of the most heinous razorblade right hand, flat undercling left hand and final dyno into a good hold. So powerful and technical at the same time, very condition-dependent and very uninspiring? Well, I do not think so, I enjoyed the process a lot. I am happy I finished most of the projects in the lower tier of Byci skala and next season it will be time to finally take a look at the upper tier. Those lines are equally bouldery, but just much longer and probably much harder!“

“Taurus” is the second hardest proposition in the country. You will recall that the Czech phenom freed “Vasil Vasil” (9b+) in 2013, unrepeated to this day.

Stefano Ghisolfi vient de réaliser hier la première ascension d’un nouveau projet extrême à Eremo di San Paolo, Arco avec “The Lonely Mountain” ! Cette voie n’est autre que la directe de sortie de “Erebor” (autour du 9b) qu’il avait réalisée en janvier dernier. C’est bien parce qu’il n’arrivait pas à cocher “The Lonely Mountain” que Stefano avait rajouté un point pour une variante de sortie plus facile et ainsi proposer “Erebor”. “The Lonely Mountain” est la première voie que Stefano a 100% équipée, en juin 2020, c’est donc une satisfaction personnelle d’ainsi boucler le processus démarré il y a 36 mois.

“Après avoir réalisé “Erebor”, je me suis rendu compte que la version originelle était possible et j’ai commencé à essayer la section du milieu qui est dure et indépendante à cette voie, avec des mouvements torrides et un dynamique sur une petite arquée. Cela me semblait dur au début mais j’ai pas mal changé mes méthodes dans chaque section et je l’ai finalement réussi. Bien que ce soit plus dur de lui proposer une cotation, je pourrais suggérer un 9b symbolique même si je trouve cela plus dur qu'”Erebor”.”

C’est donc déjà la 9ème voie en 9b et plus de Stefano qui, sans compter la première de “Lapsus” et la répétition de “La Capella” (qui pourraient être un peu moins dures), a déjà accroché à son tableau de chasse trois 9b+ (“Perfecto Mundo”, “Bibliographie” et “Change”), des répétitions de “Stoking the fire”, “FRFM”, “One slap”, “Queen line” et la première ascension de “Erebor”. À coup sûr un des grimpeurs parmi les plus expérimentés en matière d’extrême sur la planète !

Yesterday, Stefano Ghisolfi claimed the first ascent of an extreme project at Eremo di San Paolo, Arco, Italy with “The Lonely Mountain”! This route is the direct exit of “Erebor” (around 9b), a route Stefano established last January. Stefano wasn’t able to send this directissima, added a bolt to the left and created “Erebor”. “The Lonely Mountain” is special for him because it was the first route he bolted (in June 2020) so it marks the end of a 36-month process.

“Ended the year just as it started, with the ascent of the very first route I bolted in my life. And this is actually the first version I bolted in June 2020, it looked impossible at first so I added a bolt on the left and climbed “Erebor” last January. After that, I figured out the original version was possible and started trying the middle section, which is hard and exclusive of this route, adding some spicy moves with a dynamic from a very tiny crimp. It felt very hard at the beginning, then I changed almost all the betas in every section and finally climbed it today. And it’s even harder to grade it, so I can suggest a symbolic 9b, even if it is harder than “Erebor”.“

It’s Stefano’s 9th route in the 9b range and above, without counting “Lapsus” and “La Capella” as they may not be as hard as first thought. Stefano has climbed three 9b+ (“Perfecto Mundo”, “Bibliographie” and “Change”), repeated “FRFM”, “Stoking the fire”, “One Slap”, “Queen line” and did the first ascent of “Erebor”. For sure one of the strongest rock climbers in the world!

Quelques jours après Jakob Schubert, c’est au tour d’Alex Megos de réussir le court 9b du secteur éponyme de Siurana, “La capella”. Il complète ainsi la trilogie de voies évaluées autour du 9b du secteur avec “King Capella” et “Furia de Jabali”

Voici son commentaire suite à sa croix :
“Je l’ai trouvé dure pour être honnête. J’ai eu pas mal de problèmes au mouvement d’inversée en photo et je suis tombé là pendant quelques jours. Il semblerait qu’il y ait un peu de confusion concernant les cotations de secteur Capella de Siurana donc je vais écrire un post pour montrer comment c’est dur et une question de ressenti personnel quand il s’agit d’évaluer la difficulté des voies. Mais qu’importe la cotation, c’était un challenge fun et sympa.

Etant donné qu’Alex est le seul avec Will Bosi à avoir répété les 3 voies les plus dures des lieux, son avis sera intéressant. Voici en bonus la vidéo de son ascension de “Furia de Jabali”. Concernant “La capella”, c’est la 6ème ascension de la voie après Ondra, Ghisolfi, Woods, Bosi et Schubert.

Few days after Jakob Schubert, ALex Megos signed a repeat of short and powerful 9b “La capella” in Siurana. he completes the trilogy of the 3 hard routes around 9b of this sector, with “Furia de Jabali” and “King Capella”.
Here is his comment:

“This one felt very hard to me if I’m honest. I had a lot of trouble with this undercling move on the picture and fell there quite a few days. Looks like there is a bit of confusion about the grades here at the Capella sector and I’ll also write a post to show how hard and how individual grading and difficulties of routes can be. No matter the grade though, it was fun and a good challenge.”

Since Alex is the only one with Will Bosi to have rehearsed the 3 toughest routes around, his opinion will be interesting. Here is as a bonus the video of his ascent of “Furia de Jabali”. Regarding “La capella”, it is the 6th ascent of the route after Ondra, Ghisolfi, Woods, Bosi and Schubert.

De nouveau un peu d’escalade sportive en Espagne, avec trois extrêmes répétitions en Catalogne !

*** Jorge Diaz-Rullo réalise la 3ème ascension de “Samfaina” à Margalef, qui n’est autre que son projet secondaire de Finestra après “Cafe Colombia”. La voie est plutôt continue avec deux mouvements très durs sur bidoigts. Libérée par Chris Sharma en 2010 et immédiatement répétée par Ramon Julian, cette voie est restée ensuite sans nouvelle ascension pendant plus d’une décennie. Jorge propose 9a+ pour “Samfaina”, la jugeant plus dure que les autres 9a qu’il a réalisés dans ce mur.

*** “PapiChulo” de nouveau répété : quelques semaines après Mathieu Bouyoud, c’est cette fois-ci le grimpeur autrichien Stefan Scherz qui clippe le relais. Un peu plus de 2 mois après s’être cassé le pied et s’être donné comme défi de revenir plus fort pour réussir son premier 9a+, Stefan Scherz a tenu son pari à Oliana ! Âgé de seulement 20 ans et avec déjà quelques voies en 9ème degré à son actif, le compétiteur habitant Innsbruck semble en pleine progression. Jakob Schubert va commencer à regarder dans ses rétroviseurs !

*** Quelques jours après “King Capella”, Alex Megos réalise la seconde ascension de l’autre voie extrême du secteur Capella de Siurana libérée ce printemps par Will Bosi, “Furia de Jabali” 9b. Toujours sans se prononcer sur le niveau, Alex annonce 7 jours de travail et 3 gros steaks notamment dus à des conditions très froides avant sa réussite.

*** Jorge Diaz-Rullo just did “Samfaina” ‘s third ascent, his second project of Finestra sector, Margalef after his big one, “Cafe Colombia”. “Samfaina” is a power resistance testpiece with 2 hars moves on twofinger pockets. Freed by Sharma in 2010 and immediately repeated by Ramon Julian, the route was still unclimbed since more than a decade. Jorge proposes 9a+ for this one, that he finds harder than the other 9a’s he climbed on this impressive wall.

*** A new repeat of “papichulo” : few weeks after Mathieu Bouyoud, Austrian climber Stefan Scherz just clipped the anchor of Oliana’s kingline, “Papichulo”. 20 years old and few 9a’s under his belt, the competitor from Inssbruck seems to be in huge progression. Jakob Schubert will start to have a look in the mirror…

*** Few days after “King Capella”, Alex Megos is finishing the business in Capella sector of Siurana with “Furia de Jabali”, second ascent. Freed this spring by British climber Will Bosi, this short and sharp line took to Alex 7 days of projecting and 3 splits of his fingers due to very cold weather.

On le savait, Alex Megos était à Siurana depuis le début du mois. Le mutant allemand vient de réaliser la seconde ascension de “King Capella”, le 9b+ ouvert par le grimpeur britannique Will Bosi le printemps dernier qui se compose de 15 mètres complètement explosifs ! Voici le commentaire d’Alex via les réseaux sociaux :

“C’était la voie pour laquelle je suis venu à Siurana, après l’avoir checkée en mars, just après que Will Bosi a fait la première. Déjà à l’époque je m’étais rendu compte que cela me convenait plutôt bien, alors avec Jenya Kazbekova nous avons décidé de passer quelques semaines en Espagne pour essayer des voies dures. Neuf jours dans la voie et deux steaks plus tard, j’ai pu réaliser la première répétition de cette voie très courte et à doigts. J’ai aussi utilisé une méthode légèrement différente de Will, en prenant une très large pince, une méthode que je juge plus facile que celle de Will. Il ne pouvait pas faire le mouvement comme je l’ai réalisé donc je pense que c’est une préférence personnelle. Très curieux d’entendre de voir ce que d’autres en pensent ! “

Sans se prononcer sur le niveau, Alex réalise une nouvelle voie dure en escalade sportive, lui qui a déjà un impressionnant CV avec le premier 9a à vue de l’histoire, justement à Siurana, les ouvertures de voies en 9b et plus comme “Bibliographie”, “Perfecto Mundo”, “Fight Club”, ou encore une répétition de 9b référence comme “FRFM”.

As we know, Alex Megos has been in Siurana since the beginning of the month. The German beast has just made the second ascent of “King Capella”, the 9b + opened by British climber Will Bosi last spring, which offers 15 meters of completely explosive climbing! Here is Alex’s comment via social media:

“That was the route I came to Siurana for, after checking it out once last March, right after Will Bosi made the FA. Already back then I realized that it suites me pretty well so together with Jenya Kazbkova we decided to spend a few weeks in Spain to have enough time for hard routes. After nine days on the route and two splits later I could get the first repeat of this very short and very crimpy test piece. I also used slightly different beta than Will taking a very wide pinch, which felt a little easier to me than what Will did. He couldn’t do the move the way I did it though, so I guess it’s personal preference. Very curious to hear what other people think!“

Without commenting on the grade, Alex just did a new hard route, he who already has an impressive CV with the first 9a onsight, precisely in Siurana, the first ascent of routes in 9b and more like “Bibliographie”,” Perfecto Mundo “,”Fight Club “, or even a repetition of famous the 9b from Chris Sharma, ” FRFM “.

Adam Ondra a décidé de passer un peu de temps à Arco, la ville où il s’est marié début septembre. Et à peine arrivé pour cette sorte de lune de miel, le voilà qui répète Erebor, la ligne équipée et enchainée par son ami Stefano Ghisolfi en janvier de cette année.

La voie, cotée 9b/+, a depuis été répétée par Laura Rogora le mois dernier, faisant d’elle la première femme à ce niveau. Malheureusement pour les deux Italiens, Adam Ondra se prononce pour 9b. Il explique aussitôt être un peu gêné d’ainsi dévaluer la performance de la jeune femme, mais opte pour l’honnêteté et assure que Rogora est capable de bien plus.

Le Tchèque explique avoir trouvé une méthode différente de celle de Ghisolfi (qu’il estime bien à 9b/+!) dans le crux du haut, un peu morphologique mais adaptable quand même. Il a passé un jour sur Erebor en avril, et trois de plus cette fois-ci.

“Un peu de temps”, “Ondra” et “Arco”? On se prend à rêver de quelques étincelles. Ghisolfi va-t-il lui ouvrir son projet actuel ? Le secteur de Laghel, avec son 9c potentiel, va-t-il rester fermé ? Le Tchèque va-t-il sortir le perfo ?

Adam Ondra decided to spend some time in Arco, the town where he got married in early September this year. And no sooner has he arrived on this sort of honeymoon that he clips the anchor of Erebor, the line bolted and FAed by his friend Stefano Ghisolfi in January this year.

The route, graded 9b/+, has since been repeated by Laura Rogora last month, which made her the first woman at that level. Sadly for both Italians, Ondra proposes 9b. He explains being embarrassed to downgrade the young woman’s performance, but goes for honesty and makes it clear that Laura is capable of rather more.

The Czech has found a different sequence to Ghisolfi’s (which he agrees is worth 9b/+) in the top crux: a bit morphology-dependent but with some leeway. He spent a day on it last April , and three this time round.

‘Some time’, ‘Ondra’ and ‘Arco’? One could be forgiven for thinking of fireworks. Will Ghisolfi open his current project to his friend? Will the Laghel sector, with its potential 9c, remain closed? Will Ondra draw his drill?
