Nous avons aussi droit aux dernières horreurs du coin avec le très à doigts “Malleus Maleficarum” (9a+, première ascension par Alex Garriga en 2021) et sa variante de départ “Cordia Maleficarum” (9a) et enfin l’impressionnant plafond de “Marillion” (9a). Amateurs de trous et de fermetures de forains, vous voilà comblés !

Potential here is huge, and the video shows some hard classics in the 8th degree of the crag, with among others the incredible “El Cavario del sicario”, or even the 8a+’s “Moloko Mix”, “Public Enemy”, but also the latest horrors of the crag with the very fingery ” Malleus Maleficarum” (9a+, first ascent by Alex in 2021) and its right start variant “Cordia Maleficarum” (9a) or the impressive roof of “Marillion” (9a). Lovers of pocket climbing and overhang, you would be happy!
Nostalgique de “Soudain Seul” comme il l’annonce sur son compte Instagram pour présenter son ouverture, le mutant belge Simon Lorenzi est revenu passer du bon temps sur le bloc de “Big Island” à Bleau avec des amis. Avant Noël, Simon ouvrait “Conviction bas” (8B/+), qui rajoute un puissant mouvement au 8A voisin de “Conviction” pour un départ bas des plus toniques. Simon vient de réussir “Big Conviction” (8C+) qui connecte ce même mouvement avant de récupérer le départ de “The Big Island”. Nous sommes allés à sa rencontre pour en savoir plus.
– Bravo Simon, cette ouverture t’a pris longtemps ? Oui, en gros j’ai fait 4 séances avant le nouvel an dont deux où je n’ai pas pu vraiment essayé le début car c’était humide et puis à la 5ème c’est passé ! Il faut tout de même noter que vu les 25 séances que j’ai mises l’année passée pour “Soudain seul”, je connaissais encore “The Big island” très très bien, donc on ne peut pas du tout considérer cela comme 5 séances en tout bien sûr !
– Peux-tu nous décrire la ligne ? En fait ça démarre dans “Conviction bas” qui est le départ bas de conviction que j’ai ouvert il y a quelques semaines et ça finit dans “Big Island”, le bloc que tout le monde connaît ! Donc j’ai appelé ça “Big Conviction” car “Conviction Big” ça aurait moins bien sonné ! “Soudain seul” est le départ assis de “Big Island” qui vient de la gauche du bloc tandis que “Big conviction” est le départ bas de “Big Island” en venant de la droite. Du coup on peut aussi le faire dans l’autre sens, à ouvrir : commencer dans le départ assis de “Soudain seul” et finir à droite dans “Conviction”. Cela s’appellera sans doute “Soudain convaincu” !

– Comment compares-tu la difficulté avec celle de “Soudain Seul”. Par rapport à “Soudain Seul” c’est plus court donc moins rési mais c’est beaucoup plus éliminant car ça consiste en un seul mouvement très dur suivi de 4 mouvements assez faciles pour rejoindre le début de “Big”. D’une rampe en inversée relativement bonne avec des pieds très très mauvais, il faut réussir à se soulever du sol. Une fois en position, il faut envoyer loin à gauche sur une bonne réglette sans perdre les pieds. La cotation de ce mouvement est très dure à estimer vu les caractéristiques du bloc, je ne sais pas trop à vrai dire. Mais c’est plus dur que chaque mouvement individuel de “The Big island”.
– Quels sont tes prochains projets en bloc ? En as-tu fini avec ce bloc ou “Soudain convaincu” te motive aussi ? Pour l’instant j’en ai fini avec ce bloc et le prochain sur la liste c’est “La révolutionnaire” (ndlr: 8C+ ouvert par Charles Albert) !
Nostalgic for “Soudain Seul”, as the announcement on his Instagram account suggests, Belgian beast Simon Lorenzi has returned to the boulder of “Big Island” in Bleau in order to claim another first ascent and spend some good time with his friends. Before Christmas, Simon opened “Conviction Bas” (8B/+), which adds a powerful low start to the neighbouring 8A of “Conviction”. This weekend, Simon just succeeded sending “Big Conviction” (8C+) which links this same movement with the start of “The Big Island”. Here’s a chat with Simon.
– Well done Simon! Did this new first ascent take you long? Yes, basically I did 4 sessions before the New Year. For two of them I couldn’t really try the beginning because it was wet and then at the 5th it went! It should be noted, however, that given the 25 sessions I took last year for “Soudain Seul”, I still knew “The Big Island” very very well, so we can’t consider that’s just 5 sessions in total of course!
– Can you describe the line? In fact it starts in “Conviction bas”, which is the low start that I opened a few weeks ago, and ends up on “Big island”, the boulder that everyone knows! So I called it “Big conviction” because “Conviction big” would have sounded worse! “Soudain seul” is the Big Island sit start coming from the left of the boulder while “Big conviction” is the “Big island” low start coming from the right. So you can also do it in the other direction, which is still waiting for a first ascent: start in the sit start of “Soudain Seul” and finish on the right in “Conviction”. It will probably be called “Soudain convaincu”!

– Compare the difficulty with the one of “Soudain Seul”. Compared to “Soudain seul” it’s shorter so less resistant but it’s much more eliminating because it consists of a single very hard movement followed by 4 easy movements to reach the beginning of “Big”. A relatively good undercling rail with very bad feet and, therefore, you have to manage to get off the ground and once in position you have to go far to the left on a good crimp without losing your (bad) feet. The grade of this movement is very hard to know given the style of the boulder, I don’t really know what to announce. But this move is harder than each individual move on “The Big Island” for sure!
– Your next bouldering projects? Are you finished with this boulder or “Soudain convaincu” also motivates you? For now I’m done with this boulder and the next one on the list is “La Révolutionnaire” (note: 8C+ opened by Charles Albert in Gros Sablons)!
L’expérimentée grimpeuse française Alizée Dufraisse vient de réaliser la première féminine d’un des blocs les plus jolis du Tessin (Suisse), “Versace” 8B à Brione. Ouvert par Daniel Woods et Jimmy Webb en 2020, ce toit offre une escalade ludique sur de superbes préhensions avant un réta particulièrement piégeux tout en en relances en équilibre sur un talon. A coup sûr un futur classique dans le 8B. Nous en profitons pour faire le point avec Alizée, tout en appréciant la vidéo de son essai victorieux. C’est la première ascension féminine de ce bloc, et déjà le 5ème 8B pour Alizée !
– Pourquoi être allée en Suisse cet hiver toi qui généralement travaille La Rambla en hiver ? Comment tu gères le froid ? Pour changer un peu !! On est arrivés fin octobre mais on hésitait quand même entre Espagne encore ou changer, tout en sachant, pour moi, qu’aller en Suisse ça allait me demander de m’adapter à la grimpe sur granite (car je n’en ai quasiment jamais fait), à regrimper en bloc et retrouver les sensations avec de la hauteur, des chutes, et surtout bien évidement le froid et j’ai mis pas mal de temps à trouver mes marques ! La solution pour moi est de grimper avec des chaufferettes dans mes pantalons, je grimpe avec deux ou trois pantalons et j’essayais au maximum d’avoir doudounes et pantalon-doudoune quand je ne grimpe pas.
– Pourquoi as-tu jeté ton dévolu sur “Versace” ? D’abord parce que j’ai de suite été super inspirée par le lieu, la rivière, ce bloc est un peu isolé et je m’y suis sentie bien. J’ai passé le premier mois après notre arrivée à essayer de me mettre dans le style en essayant plusieurs blocs plus faciles. À vrai dire aussi j’avais une appréhension de la hauteur en bloc et de la chute puis ensuite j’ai voulu trouver deux projets, un qui est haut et l’autre moins. Du coup j’ai commencé à travailler “Versace”, qui ne fait pas trop peur, et en même temps je travaille “Héritage” qui est plus impressionnant.
– Combien de séances as-tu mis, comment s’est passé le travail ? J’ai fait 15 jours dans le bloc en tout. Dès le début j’arrivais à faire des assez bon enchainements et donc j’ai vu que c’était possible. En revanche il m’a fallu beaucoup de temps pour le réta final, qui paraissait pourtant être la section où je serais le mieux… Il m’a fallu 3 séances pour faire le mouvement, puis je n’y suis plus arrivée pendant deux séances… Cela me rendait folle, de pas comprendre exactement ce qui faisait que j’y arrivais ou que j’y arrivais pas… du coup difficile d’avoir confiance en moi dans les essais du départ… Petit à petit j’ai vraiment compris quelles étaient les subtilités, les positions qui faisaient que je faisais le mouvement et j’ai compris comment avoir ces positions du départ, mais ça a pris du temps, tout un processus…
– As-tu déjà d’autre projets pour 2022 ? Plein de projets oui, continuer ici dans le Tessin et sûrement Magic Wood en suivant avec d’autres blocs de cette difficulté mais aussi essayer la cotation supérieure, que je n’ai encore jamais réalisée en bloc. Et surement été/automne refaire des voies et essayer de retranscrire la force que j’aurai pris dans les voies !

The French Alizée Dufraisse has just completed the first female ascent of one of the nicest boulders in Ticino (Switzerland), “Versace” 8B in Brione. Opened by Daniel Woods and Jimmy Webb in 2020, this roof offers fun climbing on superb holds before a particularly tricky mantle while balancing on a heel. For sure a future classic in the 8B range. We take this opportunity to ask a few questions at Alizée while enjoying the video of her victorious send. It ‘s the first female ascent of this boulder, and already the 5th 8B for Alizée!
– Why did you go to Switzerland this winter, you who usually work La Rambla in winter? How do you manage the cold?
For a change!! We arrived at the end of October but we were still hesitating between Spain again or changing, knowing, for me, that going to Switzerland was going to require me to adapt to climbing on granite (because I rarely have any done), to do bouldering agin and find the good feeling with height, falls, and above all of course the cold and it took me a long time to find my marks! The solutions for me for the cold are to climb with warmers in my pants, I climb with two or three pants and I tried as much as possible to have down jackets and pants down jackets when I were not climbing.
– How did you chose “Versace”?
Firstly because I was immediately super inspired by the place, the river, this boulder is a little isolated and I felt good there. I spent the first month after we arrived trying to get in the style in several easier boulders. To tell the truth also, I had an apprehension of the boulder height and the fall then then I wanted to find two projects, a high one and an an other less. So I started working on “Versace”, which isn’t too scary, and at the same time I’m working on “Heritage” which is more impressive.
– How many sessions did you put in, how was the process until the ascent ?
I did 15 days in the boulder in all. From the start I was able to do pretty good links and so I saw that it was possible. On the other hand, it took me a long time for the final mantle, which nevertheless seemed to be the section where I would be the best… It took me 3 sessions to do the movement, then I couldn’t do it for two more sessions… It was driving me crazy, not understanding exactly what made me succeed or not… so it was difficult to have confidence in myself while starting to climb the boulder… Little by little I really understood what the subtleties were, the positions that evolved as I did the movement and I understood how to have these positions from the beginning, but it took time, a whole process…
– Do you already have other projects for 2022?
Lots of projects, yes, some here in Ticino and surely Magic Wood following with other boulders of this grade but I would like to also try higher grades, which I have never yet realized in bouldering. And surely summer/autumn redoing routes and trying to use the strength that I would have won on the routes!
Dans la video ci-dessous, Adam Ondra réalise la première ascension d’un superbe 9a de 30 mètres à Beckov en Slovaquie, qui finit dans le premier 8b+ tchécoslovaque, “Absolutni vedomi”. Cette falaise était très à la mode à la fin des années 80/début des années 90. Vous pouvez admirer ce gigantesque morceau de caillou avec ce château en ruines au sommet. En 1994, Tomas Pilka alias Svist (marmotte) équipa ce grand dévers qui démarre depuis une vire à 20 mètres du sol. En Juin 2020, Adam Ondra est allé voir les mouvements de ce projet. Il a été émerveillé par la beauté mais n’a pu enchainer la voie. Il est retourné ici récemment, 17 mois plus tard. Pendant ce temps là Miso Makusiniec a investi du temps dans le projet. Grâce à lui, la voie était propre, avec de la magnésie, et prête à être grimpée. La voie se nomme “Absolutorium”, et est un des plus beaux 9a de l’ancienne Tchécoslovaquie (qui a été divisée en République tchèque et Slovaquie en 1993). Incroyable vision d’avoir équipé ce challenge il y a 27 ans !
Beckov (Slovakia) was a fashionable crag in the late 80’s and early 90’s. You can see this gigantic 50-meter high piece of rock with a well-preserved castle on top. In 1994, Tomas Pilka, nicknamed Svisť (means marmot), bolted the whole line of this overhanging feature, starting from the obvious ledge 20 meters above the ground. He gave it a provisional name, ‘Dlouhá trasa’ (Long way). Last year in June, Adam Ondra checked out the moves in the project. He was blown away by its beauty but could not send it. He returned recently after 17 months. In the meantime, Miso Makusiniec was putting some serious effort into the project. Thanks to Miso, the project was cleaned, chalked and ready. The route is now called “Absolutorium” 9a (first ascent), and it is definitely one of the nicest 9a’s in the former Czechoslovakia (Czechia and Slovakia have been separated since 1993). Incredible to envision bolting this thing 27 years ago.
En fin d’année dernière, Jorge Diaz-Rullo libérait “Café Solo” 9b dans l’impressionnant dévers de La Finestra à Margalef. Cette voie est la variante de sortie facile de gauche de son super projet “Café Columbia” qui propose une sortie plus directe avec un crux supplémentaire autour du 8B bloc après les difficultés de “Café Solo”. Dans la video suivante Diaz-Rullo nous présente son run d’enchainement de “Café Solo” et son travail de la suite des difficultés dans son super-projet qui s’annonce particulièrement corsé ! At the end of 2021, Jorge Diaz-Rullo freed “Café Solo” 9b in the massive wall of Raco de La Finestra, Margalef, Catalunya. This route is the easier left exit of his super-project “Café Columbia” with a direct exit and a top crux around 8B boulder after the difficulties of the 9b… In the video below, follow Jorge in his first ascent and discover the difficulties of his main project. *** Katie Lamb s’offre son 3ème 8B+ avec un classique de Buttermilks (Bishop) en Californie, “Direct North”. Cette ligne ouverte par le local des lieux Shawn Diamond en 2009 démarre assis au pied de l’imposante boule caractéristique des lieux de Grandma Peabody. C’est une sortie directe plus difficile du 8B classique de “Direction”. Le problème propose une escalade athlétique et assez longue (12 mouvements difficiles) dans un dévers sur arquées. C’est déjà le 3ème 8B+ bloc de la grimpeuse américaine de 24 ans qui avait réalisé l’été dernier les ultra-classiques “Jade” et “New Base Line”.
*** La collante se poursuit à Fontainebleau : Malgré des conditions un poil plus humides jeudi, Max Bertone (14 ans) a comme sa sœur profité de la collante cette semaine pour réaliser son second 8B bloc avec le magnifique “Saruman du bas” à Cuvier Sorcières (derrière le Rempart). Ce bloc assez récent (2017) mais majeur a été découvert et ouvert en départ débout par Guillaume Joubert (8A) avant que Nico Pelorson n’ouvre le départ bas dans la foulée. Un bloc magnifique très bleausard tout en sensations, compression, et talons sur une arête déversante. Voici la vidéo du run gagnant du jeune réunionnais qui avait déjà empoché le debout en 2020.
*** Brooke Raboutou dans le Tessin : On l’avait quittée à Red Rocks avec “Trieste”, son projet en bloc naturel de 2021, la championne franco-américaine découvre actuellement les blocs du Tessin en Suisse. Brooke vient de réaliser la première féminine de “La Proue” 8B classique de Cresciano, tout en blocages sur réglettes plates et pieds à plat…

More bouldering sends this week after the 2 nice ticks by French women!
*** Katie Lamb offers her 3rd 8B+ boulder with a classic from Buttermilks, Bishop, California, “Direct North”. This line opened by local Shawn Diamond in 2009 is a sitstart of Grandma Peabody’s giant bowl. It’s an harder exit of classic 8B called “Direction”. The problem proposes an athletic and long climb (12 hard moves) on crimps in an overhang. It’s Katie’s 3rd 8B+ after the send of “Jade” and “New Base Line” last summer!
*** Sticky conditions in Font continue: Despite a little bit of humidity on Thursday, Max Bertone (14 years old) could take profit of cold and quite dry conditions in Font like his sister. He just climbed his second 8B boulder with “Saruman du bas” in Cuvier Sorcières (a little bit behind Rempart). This recent gem was discovered and opened by Guillaume Joubert for the stand (2017, 8A) and Nico Pelorson added immediatly an 8B low start. A very beautiful boulder, Font style, smooth climbing, compression on sloper, heelhooks and some balancy moves on an overhanging arete. The video of the send in the video juste above.
*** Brooke Raboutou is currently visiting Ticino, Switzerland with the first female ascent of Cresciano’s classic, “La proue” with slopy edges, poor feet and body tension required…
*** Video of “Hallucination” 8C+: Japan young gun Kazuma Ise, 19 years old shares the video of his send of “Hallucination” 8C+, with a very smooth climbing and a tricky mantle in the moss (!). The crux on monos looks insane, for one of the most difficult problem of the country with the 4 other 8C+ “Floatin”, “United”, “Nexus” and “Nayuta”. (Click on the image above for the video).
*** Oriane Bertone répète “Karma”, un des blocs iconiques de Fontainebleau : La jeune étoile Réunionnaise Oriane Bertone, 16 ans, vient de s’établir à Fontainebleau pour pouvoir s’entrainer au pôle France. Bien lui en a pris car se dessine depuis quelques jours une fenêtre de collante qui lui a permis de rétablir au sommet d’un des classiques de la forêt, le célèbre “Karma” à Franchard Cuisinière, à son premier essai de la journée ! Ouvert par Fred Nicole en 1995, “Karma” propose 3 mouvements très purs de compression sur des plats précaires, un bloc fort esthétique et court qui peut résumer à lui seul l’essence de l’escalade bellifontaine. Démonstration de puissance et de facilité (“le fameux Bertone flow” si caractéristique) dans la vidéo ci-dessous pour la première féminine de ce passage mythique, et une nouvelle jolie croix pour Oriane ! Quelque chose nous dit que ce n’est pas fini, Oriane étant très proche dans un gros projet à Franchard… A suivre !
*** Premier 8A+ bloc pour Amandine Loury : On connaissait les qualités d’Amandine en falaise avec de nombreuses réalisations difficiles à son actif, mais depuis quelques temps cette dernière se met à faire du bloc en milieu naturel très régulièrement. Et force et de constater que ça paye, avec la première féminine de “Tumult’Asie” à La Capelle (Gard) pour son premier 8A+. Il lui aura fallu 5 séances et là aussi des conditions de collante parfaites. Bravo les filles !
*** Oriane Bertone climbs one of Font’s most iconic lines:
The young star from Reunion island Oriane Bertone (16 years old) just moved near Font in order to train at the French national centre. She was lucky to arrive this week, as the cold and dry weather spell means one thing only: sticky conditions in the forest, allowing her to climb “Karma” today on her first go of the session! Opened by Fred Nicole in 1995, “Karma” serves up 3 pure compression moves on desperate slopers, an aesthetic and short line which perfectly embodies the famed Font style and spirit. Watch the video above, displaying her customary ease and the power (aka “the Bertone flow”) for the first female ascent of this classic. And that’s another nice tick under Oriane’s belt! And its seems it’s not finished yet, Oriane having another project in Franchard…To be followed…
*** First 8A+ by Amandine Loury: We know Amandine’s ability to score big in the rock climbing game with several extreme sends, but in the last few months Amandine has been bouldering more often too. And her work has paid off as she just claimed the first female ascent of “Tumult’Asie” in La Capelle (South of France) for her first 8A+. It took her 5 sessions and with good conditions today, success was awaiting. Congrats girls!
On avait laissé le crack Autrichien à Siurana après sa réalisation du triptyque du secteur “La Capella”. C’est à Eremo di San Paolo, Arco en Italie que Jakob Schubert refait surface ce début d’année avec une nouvelle réalisation éclair, celle de “Erebor” 9b. C’est déjà la 4ème ascension de la voie après Ghisolfi, Rogora et Ondra. Il est arrivé une petite mésaventure à Jakob, qui, a cassé une prise de pied en crochetage talon juste sous la chaine, ce qui lui a valu un beau vol plané. Il a empoché la voie à l’essai suivant en trouvant une méthode alternative plus dure à cet endroit, mais ne changeant pas le niveau. Au vu de la facilité avec laquelle il répète les voies en 9a+ et 9b ici et là (9 réalisations en 9b et +) on serait curieux de le voir sortir des standards et de sa zone de confort en falaise, en essayant des voies plus dures, moins répétées ou proposer lui aussi des premières ascensions vraiment extrêmes. We left the Austrian machine in Siurana after his send of the triptych of the sector “La Capella”. He is back again this weekend in Eremo di San Paolo, Arco, Italy with a new quick send of “Erebor” 9b. It is already the 4th ascent of the route after Ghisolfi, Rogora and Ondra. A little mishap happened to Jakob, who broke a foothold while pressing hard on a right heelhook just below the anchor and as a result took a good whipper. He immediately found a new, harder, beta which in his eyes doesn’t change the grade, and climbed the route at his next go. In view of Jakob’s margin when it comes to routes in the 9a+ and 9b range (9 sends of 9b and +) we would be curious to see him venture away from the established standards of rock climbing and out of his comfort zone, with harder routes that are also less repeated, or by claiming extreme first ascents. Afin de faire suite à ses récents faits d’armes à Oliana, la top grimpeuse Belge Anak Verhoeven est allée explorer un peu plus haut la vallée de Segre en Catalogne. Objectif : se frotter à la King Line d'”Esclatamasters” 9a, une proue déversante qui surplombe le village de Perles, juste à côté d’une arche naturelle esthétique. Après quelques jours de travail, Anak a réussi la voie, et fait intéressant et particulièrement insolite, a réalisé l’enchainement par deux fois dans la même journée en une heure d’intervalle, avec et sans les genouillères. Nous sommes allés lui demander pourquoi, tout en lui demandant aussi des précisions sur le processus. Voici son retour.
“Esclatamasters est une voie de 35 mètres constituée de 2 parties différentes, une traversée déversante sur des colos et une partie sommitale plus verticale et technique. Cette dernière est la plus difficile et donne à la voie sa cotation de 9a. C’est une ligne incroyable située dans un très beau cadre. J’ai passé 2 jours assez relax à caler la traversée. La 3ème session j’ai travaillé la partie du haut : j’y suis allée 2 fois et réussi tous les mouvements. J’aurai préféré connaitre davantage la voie précisément en détails, mais la fin de mon trip était très proche, et si je voulais me donner la chance de la faire avant mon départ, je devais faire un essai le jour suivant. Et du coup je me suis préservée et le lendemain j’ai pu réaliser la voie à ma première tentative ! (avec un annulaire en sang, pas le mieux pour l’escalade sommitale qui est délicate avec des mouvements puissants sur tridoigts. Après la réussite j’ai eu une idée : pourquoi ne pas essayer de regrimper la voie, mais cette fois sans les genouillères ? J’ai donc décidé d’y retourner sur un coup de tête, juste afin de me fixer un challenge personnel. Quand je travaillais la voie, je n’avais pas pris le temps de regarder les méthodes sans les genouillères en raison de la pression du retour à la maison, sinon j’aurai su que pour cette voie particulière, de mon point de vue, il n’y avait pas beaucoup de différences à la grimper avec ou sans les genouillères et ma première tentative aurait alors été sans les genouillères. J’ai donc recommencé à grimper la voie, en essayant de pas trop penser à me refrapper la partie sommitale, mais plutôt en voyant cela comme un jeu. En même temps je voulais donner tout ce que j’avais. J’avais pris seulement une heure de repos après ma réussite car le soleil déclinait et il allait bientôt faire sombre et froid. Très tôt dans la voie, mon saignement a repris au doigt de manière importante. Je me suis alors dit que j’avais réussi à grimper avec un cut la première fois, alors pourquoi pas deux. Cela a alors tourné en un gros combat ! Je ne pensais pas que cela deviendrait si dur ! Juste au moment où j’en avais besoin, un local m’a encouragé. Mouvement après mouvement, je devais continuer à me battre, rester précise, et bourrer ma coupure avec de la magnésie pour que cela saigne moins… jusqu’à ce que je clippe le relais de nouveau ! Quelle expérience ! Une journée merveilleuse pour laquelle nous devons être reconnaissants.”
Il semble désormais évident que la miss a une marge assez importante dans le 9a, capable de réalisations très rapides et se payant le luxe de réitérer les ascensions comme si elle faisait des doublettes d’entrainement ! Nous serions curieux de la voir évoluer dans des voies plus difficiles, mais quelque chose nous dit que c’est pour bientôt ! A suivre !
After her rampage in Oliana, Belgian top climber Anak Verhoeven went exploring the Segre valley in Catalunya. Next goal: “Esclatamasters” 9a, an overhanging prow just above Perles village, with a superb nearby natural arch as backdrop. After a few days of work the route went down, but Anak didn’t stop there, she repeated the line once more, without kneepads this time. We asked her for more details.
“Esclatamasters is a route of about 35 meters and is made up of 2 very distinct parts: an overhanging traverse on tufas and a more vertical, technical top part. This last one is the most difficult and gives the route its 9a grade. It’s an amazing line situated in a beautiful landscape. I first spent 2 pretty relaxed days working the traverse. The third session I worked the upper part; I went up twice and managed to do all the moves. I would have preferred to know the route a bit more into detail, but the end of the trip was drawing near and if I still wanted to have a chance of climbing it, I had to do an attempt the next climbing day. So that’s what I did and I topped it in my first redpoint try! (With a bleeding ring finger – not ideal for delicate climbing and deadpoint moves on 3-finger edges, haha) After the send, I had an idea: what if I tried to reclimb the route, but this time without kneepads? I decided to go for it, just as a completely unplanned, personal challenge. While working the route I had not taken the time to figure out the without-the-kneepads-beta because of the time pressure of having to go back home, otherwise I would have known that there isn’t that much of a difference between climbing it with or without pads (for this particular route, in my opinion) and my first attempt would probably already have been without pads.
So I started climbing the route again, trying not to think too much about having to climb the top part again, but rather seeing is as a playful challenge. Yet at the same time I wanted to give it all I had. I’d only had one hour of rest after my previous send, because the sun was going down and it would soon be too dark and cold. Early on in the route, my finger started bleeding heavily again. But I told myself that I had managed to climb with a bloody cut the first time and that I could do it again. It turned into a huge fight! I had not expected it to become this hard! Right at the moment I needed it, a local climber cheered me on. Move after move I had to keep fighting, stay precise, keep going and stuffing the cut with chalk so it would bleed less… until I clipped the chains again! What an experience! A wonderful day to be grateful for.”
It’s quite obvious now that 9a doesn’t trouble Anak much, as she is able to send those routes at a canter as well as repeat them like some do reps during training! We are eager to see her try more difficult routes, and a little bird actually tells us it may not be too long before that happens: To be continued!
Le jeune grimpeur normand Victor Guillermin (16 ans) a profité des vacances de Noël pour découvrir la Mecque Catalane de Siurana et réussir son premier 9a à El Pati, avec une belle vidéo au drone à la clé.
“Je suis un jeune grimpeur du Havre qui adore se faire rouster dans des voies (très) dures… Je voulais profiter des vacances de Noël pour aller grimper dans le Sud, mais une mauvaise météo nous a poussés à aller découvrir Siurana et sa voie mythique “Estado Critico”, premier 9a réalisé à vue par Alex Megos… Les vidéos de la voie trouvées sur le web m’ont convaincu de l’essayer… A la première séance j’ai pu caler les mouvs et dès la deuxième séance, j’ai mis des runs, notamment un où je tombe après le crux, tout en haut de la voie, par oubli des méthodes… C’était de bonne augure pour le surlendemain ! Mais après le jour de repos, le vent soufflait très fort, avec des rafales à plus 80km/h. Je n’ai pu mettre que deux runs, un où je suis tombé au crux, un autre où une rafale de vent m’a arraché du rocher alors que j’allais chercher le bac de fin de voie… Enfin au 5e jour, après un bon échauffement, je tope mon 1er 9a en 9 essais, réalisant un rêve d’enfant. Je n’ai maintenant qu’une envie : y retourner pour essayer d’autres voies incroyables !”
The young climber from Normandy (16 years old) Victor Guillermin took advantage of his Christmas holidays to discover the Catalan Mecca of Siurana and sent his first 9a in El Pati, with a great drone video to boot.
“I’m a young climber from Le Havre who loves to be spanked on (very) hard routes…. I wanted to take advantage of my Christmas holidays to go climbing in the South of France, but bad weather pushed us to discover Siurana and this mythical route “Estado Critico”, first 9a made onsight by Alex Megos… The videos of the route found on the web convinced me to try it… In the first session I was able to do all the moves and for my second session on it, I put some tries in, in particular one where I fell after the crux, at the top of the route after forgetting my beta… It seemed promising for the day after a rest! But after chilling for a day, the wind was blowing very strongly, with gusts over 80km/h. I was only able to give it 2 tries, one where I fell at the crux, another where a gust of wind tore me from the rock while I was going to stick the final jug… Finally on my 5th day, after a good warm-up, I topped my 1st 9a in 9 tries, realising a childhood dream. I only have one motivation: go back and try other incredible routes!”
Seb Bouin s’est rendu à Majorque pour un trip hivernal de fin d’année. Il en a profité pour visiter les falaises de l’île, notamment les must de La Reserva, Museo ou encore Cala Tuent. Après un premier séjour il y a 10 ans où Seb avait fait le tour des falaises classiques (Fragel, Les Perxes,…) le mutant français a refait un tour du coin, conseillé par Iker Pou. Ainsi, il réalise la 3ème ascension après Iker et Jaume Llebeta Serra d’une voie de 45 mètres équipée par Christian Lupion, “Reikavic Energy” 9a. “Après une approche en 8b, vient un jeté sommital avec une configuration bizarre, pas si dur en soi mais où il est facile de déjouer.” commente l’intéressé. Seb aura aussi réalisé entre autres un de ses à vue les plus difficiles avec “Petit comit”, 8b+, à Cuenco. “Je fais toujours du à vue en reprise après ma pause de Noël. C’est un de mes à vue les plus difficiles mais je peux aller plus loin en termes d’effort, le problème est de trouver les méthodes qui marchent.”
Ce break mallorquin aura permis à Seb de souffler dans son bras de fer avec son projet “DNA” à la Ramirole. “Malgré le froid, je suis tombé 4 fois après le crux sommital au mois de décembre. Je pensais le finir avant Noël. Ce n’est malheureusement pas le cas. Je m’entraîne actuellement un peu en force, et en fonction des conditions je vais peut-être y retourner bientôt et tenter de la finir. Si il fait trop froid, je retourne à Stoking the fire”. Les bases sont posées comme on dit !

Seb Bouin went to Mallorca for his end-of-year winter trip. He took the opportunity to visit the crags of the island, in particular the to-do that are La Reserva, Museo or Cala Tuent. After a first trip 10 years ago, when Seb had toured the classic cliffs (Fragel, Les Perxes and so on) the French rock climber went for a second time, on the advice of Iker Pou. While there, he made the 3rd ascent (after Iker and Jaume Llebeta Serra) of a 45-meter route bolted by Christian Lupion, “Reikjavic Energy” 9a. “After an 8b approach comes the top dyno, which is awkward, not that hard on its own but easy to fall from” comments Seb. Amongst other climbs, the Frenchman has also done one of his most difficult onsights with “Petit comit”, 8b+, in Cuenco. “I always go for onsights after my Christmas break. It’s one of my most difficult onsight sends but I can go further in terms of effort, the problem is to find the methods that work.”
This Mallorquin trip allowed Seb to take a break and put the battle with his “DNA” project at la Ramirole, Verdon, on temporary hold. “Despite the cold, I fell 4 times after the top crux in December. I thought I would finish it before Christmas. Unfortunately, it was not to be the case. I’m currently training power a little bit, and depending on the conditions I might go back there soon and try to finish it. If it’s too cold, I’ll go back on Stoking the fire instead”. There, he said it!

Une croix avec des méthodes spéciales, Giuliano préférant serrer une arquée et relancer plutôt que de réaliser l’extraordinaire derviche no foot qui a fait la renommée du bloc. Pour le grand mouvement il a essayé en vain une autre méthode par un bidoigt arqué des plus horribles…

The tick required special methods, with Giuliano preferring to crimp and go again rather than attempt the famous, and insane, no-foot cross. For the big move he did try another beta using a ridiculous two finger pocket…

Meanwhile, Serbian climber Stasa Gejo has just climbed “Delusion of Grandeur” 8A+/B in Chironico, video below. This boulder offers athletic climbing on an overhanging horizontal rail, one of the most beautiful boulders in the area. This is the second female ascent after Isabelle Faus’ two years ago.

La rose et le vampire

Voie iconique de la falaise de Buoux et du secteur historique du Bout du Monde, théâtre du développement de l'escalade libre en France dans les 80's, "La rose et le vampire" est un véritable mythe, rendu célèbre par son photogénique derviche en guise de crux, mouvement qui aura fait rêver des générations de grimpeurs. Son ouvreur, Antoine Le Menestrel, témoigne.
"J'ai 20 ans, je suis dépressif, je ne suis pas fait pour mes études de biochimie. Mais je grimpe avec la bande des Parisiens, je vie pour grimper. Le soleil tombe au ralentit. Pour arriver à la Rose et le Vampire, j’emprunte un bloc incliné telle une rampe de lancement qui s’ouvre sur le Bout du monde, un lieu magique, théâtre de nombreux combats !
D'imposants blocs de rocher gorgés de soleil jonchent le pied de la voie, de leurs pores émane un parfum sableux aux couleurs désertiques. Sur un gros bloc posé en équilibre, je me prépare. Mon matériel est bien rangé afin qu’en aucune façon il puisse entraver le déroulement de l’ascension. Je m’encorde à mon assureur-complice qui tient ma vie entre ses mains. Au cours de mon élévation il me porte par son attention. D’un geste bleauesque je fais couiner la gomme de mes chaussons. Il me reste à lâcher tout ce brouhaha cérébral et faire le vide. Je rentre en symbiose avec la partition minérale et avec l’air qui alimente le feu de ma respiration.
Je m’élance. Chaque fois, je tombe à quelques mètres du sol. Je me demande ce qui me pousse à réessayer sans cesse. Suis-je là, sur Terre, pour réussir cette voie ? Une vie pourtant ne peut pas se résumer à un mouvement. Toute ma vivacité, toute mon énergie accumulée au cours de la journée se projettent dans cette voie. Je me sens petit. Je n’ai pas le choix, la voie est sculptée en moi.
Après les premiers blocages très physiques, j’atteins les prises du passage clé, un croisé de rêve qui se déroule sur une plaque de rocher ocre ayant la configuration d’un cadre tel d’un écran de cinéma. Je chute toujours les mains aux bords du cadre. Il me manque l’état de grâce que je ne cesse pourtant pas de convoquer.
Peu à peu les ombres s’étirent, il ne reste qu’un dernier rayon de soleil, le spectacle s'achève, les acteurs sont exténués, frustrés. Nous reviendrons demain ou un autre jour, car certains jours nous laissons la voie se reposer.
Cette merveilleuse voie est un vampire. Ses prises me lacèrent les doigts, elles me pèlent la peau et je perds mes empreintes, mon identité ! Ses prises, je les prends comme une tige pleine d’épines pour grimper au calice de la fleur, ma sueur l’arrose. Cette voie m’envahit et je ne pense qu’à elle, je ne désire plus qu’elle. Je suis vampirisé. Cette voie a soif de mon sang pour nourrir sa beauté, je n’existe plus que pour elle.
Ce croisé m’ouvre le visage au monde. Grâce à ce mouvement, je vous offre une rose. Avec vous qui me regardez, je créé une cordée émotionnelle, je deviens un artiste."

An iconic line from the Bout du monde sector in Buoux, where French free climbing started in earnest in the 80s, "La rose et le vampire" is a route with a mythical status made famous by the photogenic cross involved, a move which gave wet dreams to more than one generations of climbers.The bolter, Antoine Le Menestrel, is here giving us more details.
I’m 20, depressed, I’m not made for studying biochemistry. But I climb with a group of Parisians, I live for it. The sun is setting in slomo. To get to the Rose et le Vampire, I go up a leaning boulder looking like a launchpad opening onto the Bout du monde, a magical place, the stage of many a good fight!
Imposing sunlit boulders are scattered at the foot of the route, from their pores exudes a sandy fragrance, charged with desert colours. On a big rock sitting in perfect balance, I get ready. My gear is arranged in such a way that nothing can hinder my ascent. I rope up with my belayer-friend, who is holding my life in his hands. During my climb he will keep a close eye. With a Font-like gesture I make my climbing shoes squeak. One thing left to do: let go of the noise and welcome emptiness. I become one with the mineral score and the air that feeds the fire of my breathing.
Off I start. Everytime, I fall a few meters off the ground. I wonder what pushes me to try again and again. Am I here on Earth to send this route? But a life cannot be summed up in one move. All the energy built up throughout the day is projecting onto the rock face. I feel small. I have no choice, this line is etched in me.
After the first very physical lock-offs, I gain access to the holds of the key section, a dream-like cross-through staged on a deep red slab of rock with the semblance of a frame, like a cinema screen. I always fall with my hands on the sides of the frame. I am missing that state of grace that I am fervently calling for.
Little by little the shadows lengthen, only one ray of sunlight, the show is over, the actors are exhausted, frustrated. We will come back tomorrow or another day, for on some days we let the route grab a rest.
This wonderful line is a vampire. Her holds cut through my fingers, they skin them raw and I lose my fingerprints, my identity! Her holds, I grab them like a stem covered in thorns in order to climb up to the calyx of the flower, my sweat waters it. This line has taken me over and it’s all I can think of, all I want is her. I have been vampirised. This line is thirsty for my blood to feed her own beauty, I live solely for her.
This cross-through opens my face to the world. Thanks to it, I offer you a rose. With you who are watching me, I create an emotional team, I become an artist.

For sure an extreme problem in very pure and radical style, remembering Nalle Hakkataival’s “Burden of Dreams”.
*** Toujours au Japon, la relève arrive avec le jeune Kazuma Ise 19 ans, qui enchaine « Hallucination », un vieux bloc en 8C ouvert par Dai Koyamada en 2003 au Mont Hourai. Une prise clé ayant cédé, il est le premier à répéter de nouveau le problème. Après 9 jours de travail, « Hallucination » lui semble le bloc le plus dur qu’il ait réalisé et pense à du 8C+.
Always in Japan, young crushers are in the place with Kazuma Ise, 19 years old who is claiming a repeat of “Hallucination”, an old boulder opened by Dai Koyamada in 2003 located at Mount Hourai. A key hold broke and the young gun is the first to reclimb it after 9 days of work. Considering this problem is the hardest thing he climbed he suggered an upgrade to 8C+.
*** Sergei Topishko devient le premier ukrainien à réaliser du 8C+ bloc avec le désormais classique helvète : le départ bas de « Off the wagon » à Val Bavona. C’est la 6ème ascension du passage déjà gravi par Raboutou, Woods, Webb, Cameroni et Lorenzi !
Sergei Topishko is the first ukrainian climber to climb 8C+ boulder with the classical Swiss testpiece “Off the wagon sit” at Val Bavona. It’s the 6th ascent of this famous boulder: Raboutou, Woods, Webb, Cameroni and Lorenzi having ever climbed this gem.
Adam Ondra a réalisé une belle croix à la maison juste avant Noël la première ascension de “Taurus”, 9b, un projet très bloc qu’il avait sur la falaise de Byci Skala proche de Brno en République Tchèque. Les difficultés principales sont contenues dans les 9 premiers mouvements de la voie qu’Adam estime autour du 8C+ bloc (!) avant un 8b final qu’il l’aura fait tomber une fois deux jours auparavant à cause de l’onglée. Adam estime que ce pas de bloc de départ est le problème de bloc où il a passé le plus de temps en escalade… La falaise fermant temporairement pour nidification le 1er janvier, Adam parachève ce projet au bon moment !
Il commente sur les réseaux vidéo à l’appui : “La principale difficulté réside dans la tenue d’un plat main gauche incliné à 45° sur un calcaire zéro adhérence et sortir du talon-pointe. Ensuite tu choppes un rasoir teigneux main droite, une inver plate main gauche et un dynamique final sur une bonne prise. À la fois puissant et technique en même temps, très à conditions et très peu inspirant ? Je ne pense pas, j’ai apprécié le processus. Je suis content d’avoir fini les projets de la partie basse de Byci Skala, la prochaine saison l’heure est venue de faire un tour au niveau supérieur. Les lignes sont toutes aussi bloc mais plus longues et probablement plus dures !”
“Taurus” serait la seconde proposition extrême du pays, Adam ayant déjà libéré “Vasil Vasil” 9b+ à Sloup, fin 2013.
Adam Ondra climbing at Byci Skala
Adam Ondra just added a new tick at home just before Christmas with the first ascent of “Taurus”, 9b, a very boudery project at Byci Skala, Brno, Czech Republic. The main difficulties are located in the first 9 moves at around 8C+ boulder (!) before a final 8b where he fell once 2 days before due to numb fingers. Adam was happy to finish it by the end of the year, because the crag closes on January 1st due to bird nesting.
Adam comments the climb: “The first 9 moves are surely an 8C+ boulder problem and if I consider it a boulder problem, it is probably the one that took me the most time ever. The whole crag closes on January 1 due to the birds nesting, so the pressure was real! The whole climb revolves around an insane left-hand sloper, which is around 45 degrees with zero friction limestone and getting the left heel-toe-cam out. Then getting one of the most heinous razorblade right hand, flat undercling left hand and final dyno into a good hold. So powerful and technical at the same time, very condition-dependent and very uninspiring? Well, I do not think so, I enjoyed the process a lot. I am happy I finished most of the projects in the lower tier of Byci skala and next season it will be time to finally take a look at the upper tier. Those lines are equally bouldery, but just much longer and probably much harder!“
“Taurus” is the second hardest proposition in the country. You will recall that the Czech phenom freed “Vasil Vasil” (9b+) in 2013, unrepeated to this day.
Le grimpeur écossais Robbie Philips, grand amateur de trad, a quitté dernièrement ses coinceurs le temps d’un voyage en Albanie afin de découvrir le potentiel minéral du pays. On se rappelle naturellement du trip de Seb Bouin, établissant il y a pile 2 ans la ligne la plus dure du pays avec la king line de 55 mètres “The Dream” 9b dans le canyon de Brar, équipée par un certain Adam Ondra. Les falaises au caillou incroyable sont en effet légion ici, il y en a pour tous les niveaux… Voici un beau tour d’horizon dans la vidéo rétrospective ci-dessous avec aussi un appel pour sauver une vallée locale, Vjosa menacée de surexploitation. L’Albanie, la destination grimpe du futur ?

But amazing crags are around the corner…with a nice tour in the video below, and a call to save Vjosa valley, threaten by damming and exploitation. “Climbing in Albania is the most exciting development in Sport Climbing in the last decade! I’ve been climbing in Kalymnos, Ceuse, and all over Catalunya, and Albania is just as good, if not better! There is so much still to be climbed and bolted out there – the potential seems endless!!! This film is a glimpse into Albanian climbing in the hope to inspire some more climbers to make it their next climbing trip!”
Après avoir réalisé “Patxichulo” en plein cagnard en Septembre (et “Joe mama” il y a 2 ans) Anak Verhoeven est de retour aux affaires à Oliana, réalisant cette semaine la classique “Joe Blau” 8c+ ainsi que la variante plus dure de sortie par la gauche via “Morenita”, nommée “Joe Cita” 9a. Des performances inattendues après une blessure au petit doigt contractée il y a 2 mois.
“Je devais faire attention à l’entrainement avant de partir, donc je n’étais même pas sûre de pouvoir faire sur ce trip. Mon petit doigt me cause encore des ennuis sur certaines prises (tout comme dans la vie de tous les jours, pour attraper des objets par exemple) mais ça s’améliore et bizarrement dans cette voie cela s’est très bien passé. Ce n’est pas le 9a le plus dur, mais je ne pense pas que cela vaille une décote. Il y a un crux bien funky en haut: depuis un trou à chopper de l’index main gauche en semi inversée, j’enroule mes autres doigts autour de l’index, monte mon pied droit bien haut et je lance sur une arquée en tendu. Vraiment intéressant.”
Bien évidemment, Anak ne s’arrête pas ici à un 8c+ et un 9a et veut s’atteler à un projet bien plus dur de la falaise… Nous vous tiendrons bien sûr informés de l’issue !
After her success on “Patxichulo” in the scorching September sun (not to mention “Joe mama” 2 years ago), Anak Verhoeven is back in business at Contrafort de Rumbau, Peramola, Oliana. In the last few days, the Belgian woman climbed “Joe Blau” 8c+ as well as the harder left exit “Joe Cita” 9a, finishing with the bouldery top part of “Morenita”. Quite a feat after injuring a pinky finger 2 months ago.
“I’ve had to hold back in training and until right before leaving, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to go on this rock trip at all. The pinky is still not feeling great on some kinds of holds (and mostly in everyday life when grabbing things), but it has improved a lot and in this route if felt totally okay. And a little more about that last part: it is characterized by a funky crux move – left index finger into a sidepully/underclingy one-finger pocket, I then curl my other fingers around the index, place my right foot high and deadpoint to a crimp. Super interesting climbing.”
Of course, Anak isn’t here for a mere 8c+ and 9a. She is motivated to try a proper hard route here… So stay tuned for potential fresh news…
Video. En octobre dernier, Clément Lechaptois réalisait la première ascension du technico-physique “Solitary Daze” 8C tout en compression dans un gros dévers de Fionnay en Suisse. Ce bloc n’est autre que la directe de sortie d’un vieux problème de Dave Graham, “Permanent Midnight” 8A+, ouvert en 2006 dans une planche de 50°. Voici la vidéo du processus qui a conduit à la première ascension après 8 jours de travail. Les deux derniers mouvements durs sur des talons précaires ont l’air particulièrement torrides !
Video. Last Fall French gun Clément Lechaptois bagged the first ascent of “Solitary Daze” 8C, a physical-cum-technical boulder located in Fionnay, Switzerland. This boulder is the direct exit of an old Dave Graham problem, “Permanent Midnight” 8A+ opened in 2006 on a 50° overhang. Here is the video showing the process until the first ascent after 8 days of work. The last 2 hard moves off of tricky heel hooks look completely insane!
Stefano Ghisolfi vient de réaliser hier la première ascension d’un nouveau projet extrême à Eremo di San Paolo, Arco avec “The Lonely Mountain” ! Cette voie n’est autre que la directe de sortie de “Erebor” (autour du 9b) qu’il avait réalisée en janvier dernier. C’est bien parce qu’il n’arrivait pas à cocher “The Lonely Mountain” que Stefano avait rajouté un point pour une variante de sortie plus facile et ainsi proposer “Erebor”. “The Lonely Mountain” est la première voie que Stefano a 100% équipée, en juin 2020, c’est donc une satisfaction personnelle d’ainsi boucler le processus démarré il y a 36 mois.
“Après avoir réalisé “Erebor”, je me suis rendu compte que la version originelle était possible et j’ai commencé à essayer la section du milieu qui est dure et indépendante à cette voie, avec des mouvements torrides et un dynamique sur une petite arquée. Cela me semblait dur au début mais j’ai pas mal changé mes méthodes dans chaque section et je l’ai finalement réussi. Bien que ce soit plus dur de lui proposer une cotation, je pourrais suggérer un 9b symbolique même si je trouve cela plus dur qu'”Erebor”.”
C’est donc déjà la 9ème voie en 9b et plus de Stefano qui, sans compter la première de “Lapsus” et la répétition de “La Capella” (qui pourraient être un peu moins dures), a déjà accroché à son tableau de chasse trois 9b+ (“Perfecto Mundo”, “Bibliographie” et “Change”), des répétitions de “Stoking the fire”, “FRFM”, “One slap”, “Queen line” et la première ascension de “Erebor”. À coup sûr un des grimpeurs parmi les plus expérimentés en matière d’extrême sur la planète !
Yesterday, Stefano Ghisolfi claimed the first ascent of an extreme project at Eremo di San Paolo, Arco, Italy with “The Lonely Mountain”! This route is the direct exit of “Erebor” (around 9b), a route Stefano established last January. Stefano wasn’t able to send this directissima, added a bolt to the left and created “Erebor”. “The Lonely Mountain” is special for him because it was the first route he bolted (in June 2020) so it marks the end of a 36-month process.
“Ended the year just as it started, with the ascent of the very first route I bolted in my life. And this is actually the first version I bolted in June 2020, it looked impossible at first so I added a bolt on the left and climbed “Erebor” last January. After that, I figured out the original version was possible and started trying the middle section, which is hard and exclusive of this route, adding some spicy moves with a dynamic from a very tiny crimp. It felt very hard at the beginning, then I changed almost all the betas in every section and finally climbed it today. And it’s even harder to grade it, so I can suggest a symbolic 9b, even if it is harder than “Erebor”.“
It’s Stefano’s 9th route in the 9b range and above, without counting “Lapsus” and “La Capella” as they may not be as hard as first thought. Stefano has climbed three 9b+ (“Perfecto Mundo”, “Bibliographie” and “Change”), repeated “FRFM”, “Stoking the fire”, “One Slap”, “Queen line” and did the first ascent of “Erebor”. For sure one of the strongest rock climbers in the world!
