Italian climber Niky Ceria is currently climbing in the forest of Fontainebleau. This hunter of king lines and beautiful rock doesn’t forget the bouldering top level with for example several 8C boulders under his belt,, “Gioia” or the second ascent of Ephyra in Switzerland. Niky just did a repeat of “La Révolutionnaire” at Gros Sablons, a remote and magnificent place of 3 Pignons. This roof was opened in 2017 by Charles Albert and proposed 8C+ and it’s the 4th ascent after Kameyama and Lorenzi.

– You climbed here because you find the area of Gros Sablons quiet. Do you find that some sectors in Font are too crowded? What’s your opinion?
I’d say it is not more crowded than the average and it has been pretty quiet lately.
I just like Gros Sablons and the areas nearby. Sometimes I go there just for some hikes.. So it was nice to go there and climbing on Bibop and la Revolutionnaire also because it’s a nice place where to be.

– How was the process and the work of the boulder? You climbed the boulder twice for avoiding a dab at the beginning, right?
The process was a bit confusing.. Especially about the proper starting holds. But in the end, after reading some articles and talking with Simon Lorenzi, I got to know all the starting versions. My way to start was 2 moves lower than the 2016 version and 1 move less than the one put up in 2017. In that occasion my skin felt some ground while I was climbing, so despite I topped it out for “practicing” I had to do it properly and I climbed it later. I haven’t climbed it twice as, with the tiny dab, the first time doesn’t count of course. The original starting position felt phisically impossible for space reasons. I found 2 methods that worked, but on both ways my back always touched the rock on the left. One morning I was there in the sector and I played on it again, finding a slightly different spot for the heel. This find allowed me to stay slightly on the left and avoiding the dab.

– You notice that you were trying La révolutionnaire in order to “disconnect your brain from the lines you have in mind? Which lines are you scoping?
I have never found any projects to scoop here in Font, so the lines I checked this time were already climbed.
I climbed on other boulders which require to me focus, mindsetting, logistics and skin. Revollutionaire was simple to try because the holds are skin friendly and you can almost try it with no pad.. So it was an easier approach for my brain. It was more about climbing and figure out exciting moves.

Nico Pelorson et Rob Denayer répètent Le Pied à coulisse – Nico Pelorson and Rob Denayer repeat Le Pied à coulisse

Rob Denayer

After “Supercrackinette”, Nico Pelorson went back to Font for a few bouldering days with again a great send, a repetition of the “Le pied à coulisse” (around 8C) at rocher Gréau, a problem opened by Guillaume Glairon-Mondet in January 2016. On Sunday, the boulder was climbed twice, the strong Belgian climber Rob Denayer also climbed it! We went to ask them some questions.

Nico Pelorson
:

– Why this short stay in Bleau? Nostalgic ?
Yes, a little nostalgic from Font and the forest, but above all nostalgic for my friends there. It made me feel good to see them all again. The idea of this stay was to train thoroughly with Lulu in perspective of the “Dura Dura” throughout the month of March.

– How long did you work this one?
I took 4 sessions to do the boulder spread over 2 weeks.

– Which things give you the motivation to try?
Several things motivated me to try this boulder. First, it was only 5 minutes from the office where I worked the past 2 weeks. Perfect for relaxing after work! In addition it is a super line, very nice to climb.

– Did you do the original version? What do you think of direct version from Charles. Tell us a bit about the moves of the boulder and what you liked.
The direct version is certainly more logical and easier but a little less beautiful I find because it avoids the two beautiful edges of the overhang. Actually, the version I made doesn’t make much sense considering there is a more straightforward and more simple version. But since I mostly climb to relax after work, I didn’t care.

– Did you set goals for the “Dura Dura” route that you will try soon?
My goal is to send the first part until the kneebar rest this year. I trained specifically for this!

Rob Denayer:

– Can you introduce yourself shortly? It seems you’re a Font addict since 10 years?
I’m 23 years old from Belgium and I’ve been climbing since 2008. My first trip to font was in 2010 and I have been coming back every year as much as I can!

– How was your process in “Le pied à coulisse”? What do you think about this boulder?

I tried “Pied a coulisse” for the first time in November 2021 and could do all the moves except the mantle because it was wet. I came back last weekend and tried it one day with Michiel Nieuwenhuisen and Tim Reuser. In quickly did all the moves and found some good tricks to do the first part as fast as I could. I had one good attempt that day were I fell on the mantle. I realised I had to the first part a little bit faster (30-35 seconds until the mantle) to save enough chalk and energy). I came back the day after; fell on the mantle 3 more times and then I got lucky. Nico’s ascent followed 2hours later I think. It has been a long time since I projected something with other climbers, I usually climb alone. But it was cool this time to project it with a few other climbers, even though none of us really uses the same beta.

– Have you some other hard boulders around the corner?

I had a really good season in font this year so I’m not sure what I will try next: “Alchimiste” is high on the list and I want to check out La force de Destin as well. But there’s many “easier” and higher boulders that I want to try right now as well!

Opened by Charles Albert in 2018, “La Révolutionnaire” is a little extreme roof just at the beginning of blue circuit of Gros Sablons, a quiet area of 3 pignons, Font. Only Ryohei Kameyama climbed it again in 2019 confirming the 8C+ grade proposition, with a video of his ascent. But we know few things about this boulder sharing some compression, body tension and crimpy moves. Simon Lorenzi just took the third ascent and tell us more about it.

“I went to check “La Révolutionnaire” the day after having climbed”Big Conviction”. The conditions were good and I quicly did all the moves but the start caused me troubles and also a very physical move in the middle. After having done all the moves, I started to work on the last movement more specifically. This one consists of a blind dyno in a thin thin crimp hole which requires to be extremely precise. Coming from the beginning, this would undoubtedly be the crux of the sequence. During this first session, it seemed quite clear to me: this boulder is a perfect mix of strength, body tension and precision. Then I devoted the next two sessions to working on the sections as well as the physical crux. With a little crimp right hand in the roof and a good sloper left hand, you have to go again left hand in a higher and bad sloper. This move is hard to stick from the beginning, and in addition you have to be strong enough to stay high and not touch the ground which is not very far, it’s quite violent, body tension requiring as well as for the pecs and the biceps. During the third session I sent the boulder by passing the first 3 movements, then I finished the session by working the beginning which is a little strange because really close to the ground. From there, I was pretty confident in my ability to send it the next session.

Two weeks later I came back for a 4th session on the weekend of good conditions and on my 4th go I sent and mantled at the top of the boulder. Although a little less hard, the first 3 moves add a difficulty in body tension and play an important point in the difficulty, more than I thought. They really have a significant impact on physical crux as well as fatigue for the last move in precision. The boulder being close to the ground, I say thank you to my small size because it is undoubtedly an advantage. Despite this drawback, the boulder remains major, the moves are really beautiful and the holds are really very nice. The holds are sculpted and perfectly adapted for a playful climb in a body tension style so it’s worth the detour, I promise! For the grade, it’s not easy to realize, I’m favored by my size and the style in strength, body tension, dynamism suits me perfectly. I think it would be difficult to find a boulder that would suit me better so I have a hard time judging. So taking into account these elements and the other boulders that I have already been able to do, the grade of 8C+ doesn’t seem exaggerated to me but as always we will know more during the next repeats, because it is hard to get a perfect idea with only 3 sends.”

– Camille Coudert claims the third ascent of Soudain Seul! (+ interview)

Camille Coudert Soudain Seul

Camille Coudert Soudain Seul
Photo: coll. Arthur Delicque

He was working on it last winter with Simon Lorenzi and Nico Pelorson but had not finished it, Camille Coudert just succeeded in his super-project yesterday in Font with “Soudain Seul”, aka the left sit-start of ” The Big Island”. A real achievement for him after nearly two years of epic battle! Interview!

– Last year you worked the project with Simon and Nico. How did you experience this process despite the failure?
Basically I started trying it just before the first Covid episode, at that time only Nico was trying and that’s why I got motivated.
In the end, I was only able to do one session at that time before the first lockdown.

Then the following season I was very motivated to try it seriously, I started going there regularly in mid-November 2020. I was alone on the boulder at that time and until the end of December I was doing one session per week, then came Simon who did the stand start in 2 sessions and then started to try the sit with me.
In 8 sessions he went further than me after 1 month and a half of tries, and it gave me a boost. Then at the beginning of January Nico was back on the boulder. The days were great, we were always (or almost) 3 climbers trying the project and a good friendship and positive competition developed between us.
Finally at the beginning of February Simon succeeded, at that time I was getting better and better and I felt that I was getting closer.
But a certain pressure set because the closer I was and the hotter it was, the less chance I had (I sweat a lot on my hands) at the end of the season which lasted until the beginning of April. I fell 3 times after the last crux of the boulder but I had to resolve that it wouldn’t be for this year, the temperatures were rising.
During this time, unlike me, Nico was getting better and better in the boulder because he had incredibly dry skin and the milder temperatures of April suited him better and he finally sent it too.

– How was this season? Have you had doubts about your success this winter?
This year I was determined to put an end to this boulder and like last year I started to get started in mid-November, this time I had studied the plan with my coach (Guillaume Levernier) and we came to the conclusion that I had not done enough training in the stand of “Big island” and perhaps put runs too early last year. So this year I started in mid-November by redoing training in stand start. Then mid-December I started the goes for the sit, and I was really close several times. I fell further than my best tries of last year but I felt that I was missing a little something. So after the Christmas vacations I did some long resistance training sessions.. In January I started to feel more trained but the conditions weren’t great and I had a lot of frustration.
After a 2 week break because of work and the Covid, (when Simon did “Big conviction”), I came back to do a training session in “Big island” stand (early February). This day boosted me. It took me another 3 sessions spread over 2 weeks to finally finish it!

– How did you approach this project mentally? Approximately how many tries did you do?
Cncerning the mental I must admit that it was perhaps the hardest for me due to the wetness of my hands and my slippery goes…
The sessions where I went to do training there was no pressure, on the other hand the sessions where I went to put some serious tries I had a lump in my stomach at the start of each session which disappeared at the end of the day when I was most sure of myself, after having fallen 3/4 times after the crux in the last 2 final moves.
It was hard to manage and the more I was easy on “Big Island” stand the less I had this pressure. When I sent I felt very low pressure before.
Hard to know the number of sessions I put in the boulder I would say twice a week on average for almost 8 months in all. Which must be between 70 and 100 sessions… On the other hand, I made more precise stats, I did “The big Island” stand 43 times, 28 times in the last month and a half!

– For you, which aspects made the difference recently?
What makes the difference for months is the training in “Big Island” stand over the last month: I did it 3 times per session as warm-up and every 3 sessions I came to do training on it and I did it 5/6 times.
The last 2 weeks I had a 100% success rate in the stand!

Camille Coudert Soudain Seul

– What do you think of the use of the kneepad in this boulder? Is-it quite harder without?
I find that there is not much to think about, it would be like asking what do you think of the use of heels in this boulder. Without a kneepad, climbing “Soudain Seul” is almost impossible.

– A word about the grade? Agree with Nico?
For the grade honestly it’s difficult to know, indeed I tried very few boulders in the 8C/+ range, so give my opinion and a statement about 8C+ hard or easy 9A I have noe clue and I have not thought about yet.
Especially since during my send go I felt like I was climbing an 8A.
So I’m not going to say something right now but I promise it will come!

– Will you be able to get back into a project of this magnitude in the future?
Without a doubt, I already want to, but I will choose projects that are a little shorter. The long boulders are too frustrating!

Thanks to Arthur Delicque for the nice pics!

Video: Simon Lorenzi, Big Conviction 8C+

He noticed it in the interview we made following his first ascent, Simon Lorenzi has a good muscle memory of “The Big Island” which he knows very well. It’s literally a walk he offers us for the first ascent of the right low start starting in “Conviction low”, for an extreme link that he named “Big Conviction” 8C+. The starting move, random, seems particularly complicated to stick although it’s the first, offering a very powerful slap requiring biceps, but also a solid body tension holding a slopy vertical rail with poor feet. There is no doubt that this move adds fatigue and difficulty to the classic finish: one of the hardest problem of Font forest. Enjoy the flow in the video below!

Ces quadras toujours au sommet de leur art en bloc – These boulderers in their forties who are still at the top of their game (+videos)

6 février 2022 à 12:08

Inoxydables !

A suivre !

quadras bloc

Unstoppables! Despite the years, some bouldering pioneers now in their forties are still particularly active with recent developments.

In Font, Olivier Lebreton, 45, recent veteran French bouldering champion is still in great shape. This beginning of the year 2022 Olivier has just completed two projects he had among the major boulders of the forest, “Partage assis” 8B at Buthiers and “The Big Island” 8B+/C at the Coquibus Rumont. These two achievements are presented in the video above.

Dave Graham, 40 years old, is spending all his winter in Switzerland on the boulders of Ticino with a repeat of the “Roadkill” 8C mega highball in Val Bavona just before Christmas, a double send with our Frenchie Clément Lechaptois. This big pice of rock was opened in 2020 by Shawn Raboutou and had previously seen repeats by Jimmy Webb and Kim Marschner. Dave, who can be considered one of the major actors in the development of US sportclimbing over the past 20 years with Chris Sharma, always seems to be at the top of his game. Appreciate the quality of his climbing and his technical skills in the boulder in the video above. A delight!

Other climbers in their forties, more discreet, are still strong.
In Great-Britain, 43-year-old Dave McLeod is back to affairs after an elbow injury. Dave just completed the second ascent of “Below zero” 8B+ at Rooftown, a project he had for many months. The first ascent of this line was stolen recently by Will Bosi. Dave’s process on this boulder is described in the video above too.

Further East, Bernd Zangerl is still climbing hard, lately working on a decade-old project…just like Klem Loskot, who, according to the latest news, is still very active in bouldering despite being silent on social media.

Obviously, dealing with this subject without mentioning Dai Koyamada would be a mistake! Since the intentional brake of the holds of his 8C+ “Nayuta” in Japan in 2018 as well as some of his other projects and first ascents, the 45-year-old Japanese bouldering pioneer has been more discreet about his developements. Dai has still made more than a dozen of bouldering first ascents in the 8th degree in 2021, and is developing in consultation with the local government many new boulders in the very large area of Hinokage (in Kyushu, South of Japan) where is already “Eternal” which he established in 2013. Here is still very important hard bouldering potential, perhaps where the future of outdoor bouldering in Japan is…To be continued !

Bleau : Simon Lorenzi ouvre Big Conviction 8C+ – Font: Simon Lorenzi frees Big Conviction 8C+ (+interview)

Nostalgic for “Soudain Seul”, as the announcement on his Instagram account suggests, Belgian beast Simon Lorenzi has returned to the boulder of “Big Island” in Bleau in order to claim another first ascent and spend some good time with his friends. Before Christmas, Simon opened “Conviction Bas” (8B/+), which adds a powerful low start to the neighbouring 8A of “Conviction”. This weekend, Simon just succeeded sending “Big Conviction” (8C+) which links this same movement with the start of “The Big Island”. Here’s a chat with Simon.

– Well done Simon! Did this new first ascent take you long?
Yes, basically I did 4 sessions before the New Year. For two of them I couldn’t really try the beginning because it was wet and then at the 5th it went! It should be noted, however, that given the 25 sessions I took last year for “Soudain Seul”, I still knew “The Big Island” very very well, so we can’t consider that’s just 5 sessions in total of course!

– Can you describe the line?
In fact it starts in “Conviction bas”, which is the low start that I opened a few weeks ago, and ends up on “Big island”, the boulder that everyone knows! So I called it “Big conviction” because “Conviction big” would have sounded worse! “Soudain seul” is the Big Island sit start coming from the left of the boulder while “Big conviction” is the “Big island” low start coming from the right. So you can also do it in the other direction, which is still waiting for a first ascent: start in the sit start of “Soudain Seul” and finish on the right in “Conviction”. It will probably be called “Soudain convaincu”!

Lorenzi Big Conviction
Photo: Arthur Delicque

– Compare the difficulty with the one of “Soudain Seul”.
Compared to “Soudain seul” it’s shorter so less resistant but it’s much more eliminating because it consists of a single very hard movement followed by 4 easy movements to reach the beginning of “Big”. A relatively good undercling rail with very bad feet and, therefore, you have to manage to get off the ground and once in position you have to go far to the left on a good crimp without losing your (bad) feet. The grade of this movement is very hard to know given the style of the boulder, I don’t really know what to announce. But this move is harder than each individual move on “The Big Island” for sure!

– Your next bouldering projects? Are you finished with this boulder or “Soudain convaincu” also motivates you?
For now I’m done with this boulder and the next one on the list is “La Révolutionnaire” (note: 8C+ opened by Charles Albert in Gros Sablons)!

More bouldering sends this week after the 2 nice ticks by French women!

*** Katie Lamb offers her 3rd 8B+ boulder with a classic from Buttermilks, Bishop, California, “Direct North”. This line opened by local Shawn Diamond in 2009 is a sitstart of Grandma Peabody’s giant bowl. It’s an harder exit of classic 8B called “Direction”. The problem proposes an athletic and long climb (12 hard moves) on crimps in an overhang. It’s Katie’s 3rd 8B+ after the send of “Jade” and “New Base Line” last summer!

*** Sticky conditions in Font continue: Despite a little bit of humidity on Thursday, Max Bertone (14 years old) could take profit of cold and quite dry conditions in Font like his sister. He just climbed his second 8B boulder with “Saruman du bas” in Cuvier Sorcières (a little bit behind Rempart). This recent gem was discovered and opened by Guillaume Joubert for the stand (2017, 8A) and Nico Pelorson added immediatly an 8B low start. A very beautiful boulder, Font style, smooth climbing, compression on sloper, heelhooks and some balancy moves on an overhanging arete. The video of the send in the video juste above.

*** Brooke Raboutou is currently visiting Ticino, Switzerland with the first female ascent of Cresciano’s classic, “La proue” with slopy edges, poor feet and body tension required…

*** Video of “Hallucination” 8C+: Japan young gun Kazuma Ise, 19 years old shares the video of his send of “Hallucination” 8C+, with a very smooth climbing and a tricky mantle in the moss (!). The crux on monos looks insane, for one of the most difficult problem of the country with the 4 other 8C+ “Floatin”, “United”, “Nexus” and “Nayuta”. (Click on the image above for the video).

Deux françaises à bloc ! – Two French women crushing the boulders!

A suivre !

Two French women crushing the boulders!

*** Oriane Bertone climbs one of Font’s most iconic lines:

The young star from Reunion island Oriane Bertone (16 years old) just moved near Font in order to train at the French national centre. She was lucky to arrive this week, as the cold and dry weather spell means one thing only: sticky conditions in the forest, allowing her to climb “Karma” today on her first go of the session! Opened by Fred Nicole in 1995, “Karma” serves up 3 pure compression moves on desperate slopers, an aesthetic and short line which perfectly embodies the famed Font style and spirit. Watch the video above, displaying her customary ease and the power (aka “the Bertone flow”) for the first female ascent of this classic. And that’s another nice tick under Oriane’s belt! And its seems it’s not finished yet, Oriane having another project in Franchard… To be followed…

*** First 8A+ by Amandine Loury:
We know Amandine’s ability to score big in the rock climbing game with several extreme sends, but in the last few months Amandine has been bouldering more often too. And her work has paid off as she just claimed the first female ascent of “Tumult’Asie” in La Capelle (South of France) for her first 8A+. It took her 5 sessions and with good conditions today, success was awaiting. Congrats girls!

Trailer : Soudain Seul, Fontainebleau

Here is the trailer of upcoming film about the first ascent of “Soudain Seul” aka “The Big Island sit” (V16/17) by Belgian top climber Simon Lorenzi. Belgian Filmmaker Gilles Charlier followed Simon during some weeks last WInter during his quest : freeing one of the most iconic project of Font forest. A crowdfunding campaign is launched for finishing the movie. Small rectification compared to what is stated in the trailer, it’s indeed Vincent Pochon who made the first ascent of the stand start and logical boulder, Dave Graham having previously opened “The Island” an awkward 8B+ version offering a start most bizarre, a short version of the boulder now forgotten…

It’s done! The first ascent of this boulder was claimed some weeks ago but discreet and very strong Dutch climber Michiel Nieuwenhuijsen only made the announcement recently on social media. He did the first ascent of “Le pilier du désert assis” in Apremont Désert, Font. This boulder, located in the center of the sector, was opened as a stand start by Thibault Le Scour. It consists of a jump start into 2 vertical slopers, 7C+. Later, Fred Nicole himself added a static low start using the hole for the right hand and the arête for the left (no jump). The sit start version remained unsolved despite attempts by bouldering beasts like Jimmy Webb in 2018.
Proposed as 8C by Michiel, the boulder has since seen two quick repeats, one by Manu Cornu, with a less morpho and harder sequence for him for the start, for which he suggested 8C+, thinking the bouldering level is increasing these days. Nico Pelorson disagreed despite using Cornu’s methods and direct exit, climbing the boulder in 3 quick sessions and giving it 8B+. Whatever the grade, Michiel, who is 187cm tall, used a different hold for the beginning, using his large span. He explains his beta:

We all use the left sloper and start sitting on the ground (Also Nico). They use a small crimp close to the edge for the right. I use a far sloper to the right. We all use a right heel, my heel is just more on the right. Then we all go with the right to the small pocket/edge and the rest is the same. For me the small box they use is too small. For them my big box is to big! 🙂

With 3 repeats in a few weeks, “Le pilier du désert” sure is now in fashion! A new hard addition to the forest is born! The video of the first ascent can be found above.

Solenne Piret s’offre Pierrot 7B à Bleau – Solenne Piret climbs Pierrot 7B in Font

Solenne Pierrot Fontainebleau

After the amazing send of an iconic boulder in the forest with “Onde de Choc” in Apremont, paraclimbing champion Solenne Piret continues to push in Fontainebleau. This time it is a roof problem, “Pierrot” (7B) in Marion des Roches that Solenne has crushed. An almost fortuitous tick, in 4 sessions, since Solenne had not yet done all the moves of the boulder over the previous days. This problem involving body tension, heelhooks, spicy deadpoint moves where fighting against gravity is huge is a real feat for Solenne, who must deal without a right hand.

Solenne spoke to us about the process:
“When I saw this boulder a few weeks ago, I immediately liked it and knew I could do it. Even if it took a little time to work out the methods, find some that were less morpho than those usually used… From the first session I found I could use a foot hold with my right hand in the first crux. In the second, I found a good placement of my right hand to bump up again to the sloper, but I wasn’t able to stick the move, neither the next one mind (going on the rail).
Third session, as my body seemed to have learnt the beginning well, I managed to stick this sloper left-hand without too many problems. It took me quite a few tries to figure out the next two moves (match the right hand in the undercling, then dyno to the right left-hand rail – this move I only did once, during the send).
This dynamic movement scared me, because the shape of the right-hand undercling means your hand is stuck in it. I needed very attentive spotting and also a video analysis to realise that this dyno didn’t need to be so dynamic, because my body was already quite high from the undercling.

Coming back in shape two days later, I knew I was going to send it. All I had to do was to enjoy, and I really enjoyed every try that day because I mastered the first part of the boulder and just had to fight through the end.”

Solenne Pierrot Fontainebleau

With her coach, Guillaume Levernier, Solenne is currently working on the grip with her weak arm. And efforts are paying off pretty quickly. Guillaume developed the training for us:

“Pierrot is an athletic boulder on decent holds but which requires very important qualities of strength and body tension.
Winter prophylactic work on the lower and upper limbs allowed us to avoid injuries as much as possible. More recently we have worked on quality development of strength in the trunk (mainly shoulders) and arms, through TRX but also pull-up bar exercises. Of course, the work has been adapted to her specificity.
I also offered her bouldering-oriented physical preparation exercises which required her to stay on one foot while having a difficult hold to stick in order to work on functional body tension (not limited to the abdominal belt). All of these exercises have paid off and we are already looking at the next goals!”

Rencontre avec Killian Chabrier, le nouveau mutant bleausard – Meeting Killian Chabrier, the new Font crusher

– Et “Jack under the box” ?

Killian Chabrier is a young competitor who is also having fun climbing outside in Font. And by the looks of it, it works for him! Killian has been crushing hard Font classics this Spring since his first 8C “The big island” in February. On fire! He bagged a quick repeat of “La force” 9a, a power resistance problem located in Orsay roof, and recently did the first ascent of “Jack under the box”, an insane 8B+ at Autre toît, Cul de Chien. We asked him a few questions.

– Can you introduce yourself?
I’m Killian Chabrier, 21-years old and from the Block’Out gym in Paris. I’ve been climbing since I’m 12, I compete and at the same time climb outdoors a lot.

– What about your repeat of “La force”?
I tried the different parts of this problem a lot 2 years ago (around 10 sessions) but the send of “Quoi de neuf” remained a distant proposition… At the beginning of 2020 I injured my biceps on the one arm hang and 360° spin of “Acte 2”, so I was scared to try again. At the beginning of this year I returned to the problem and quickly sent “Quoi de neuf” (the easier exit) in 2 sessions. So it was logical to finish “La force”. I needed 3 more sessions to stay strong in the final 7C boulder and to send it.

And “Jack under the box”?
The stand start “Jack in the box” was unknown, we didn’t know how to start or finish. Recently a video appeared and gave me the motivation to try. It’s my style big time, an 8A+ starting in compression mode on 2 underclings followed by a deadpoint move into a far crimp before an awkward 6C mantle. Camille Coudert checked the boulder and told me it was possible to start deeper. The beginning of the boulder is very physical, a 4-move compression problem with a kneebar that is doable only with a pad. It’s around 8A boulder. On my first session I managed to stick the move of the stand, so I decided to try the whole thing.

It seems you recently made massive leaps in your climbing…
Yes, sure! I feel that I have passed a new milestones in my climbing. I think I really owe this to Pierre Brebion, my new coach.
This change of trainer suited me well, Pierre showed me a new vision of training based more on pure climbing and less training on specific exercices. It allowed me to quickly transition between my strength sessions and my climbing sessions in the forest or indoors. And I made enormous physical progress! Indeed, my old projects of one or 2 years ago, such as “Gecko assis”, “Kheops assis” or “L’insoutenable légèreté de l’être” went down in a very few sessions this year!

– Some projects you want to try in Font in the future?
Yes, a lot of boulders like “Soudain seul” or “Pilier du désert assis”, “Délire onirique assis”. And also trying to find new hard lines to help developing the foret!
