Ce bloc n’est autre que la directe de sortie d’un vieux problème de Dave Graham, “Permanent Midnight” 8A+, ouvert en 2006 dans une planche de 50°. Voici la vidéo du processus qui a conduit à la première ascension après 8 jours de travail. Les deux derniers mouvements durs sur des talons précaires ont l’air particulièrement torrides !

Stefano Ghisolfi vient de réaliser hier la première ascension d’un nouveau projet extrême à Eremo di San Paolo, Arco avec “The Lonely Mountain” ! Cette voie n’est autre que la directe de sortie de “Erebor” (autour du 9b) qu’il avait réalisée en janvier dernier. C’est bien parce qu’il n’arrivait pas à cocher “The Lonely Mountain” que Stefano avait rajouté un point pour une variante de sortie plus facile et ainsi proposer “Erebor”. “The Lonely Mountain” est la première voie que Stefano a 100% équipée, en juin 2020, c’est donc une satisfaction personnelle d’ainsi boucler le processus démarré il y a 36 mois.
“Après avoir réalisé “Erebor”, je me suis rendu compte que la version originelle était possible et j’ai commencé à essayer la section du milieu qui est dure et indépendante à cette voie, avec des mouvements torrides et un dynamique sur une petite arquée. Cela me semblait dur au début mais j’ai pas mal changé mes méthodes dans chaque section et je l’ai finalement réussi. Bien que ce soit plus dur de lui proposer une cotation, je pourrais suggérer un 9b symbolique même si je trouve cela plus dur qu'”Erebor”.”
C’est donc déjà la 9ème voie en 9b et plus de Stefano qui, sans compter la première de “Lapsus” et la répétition de “La Capella” (qui pourraient être un peu moins dures), a déjà accroché à son tableau de chasse trois 9b+ (“Perfecto Mundo”, “Bibliographie” et “Change”), des répétitions de “Stoking the fire”, “FRFM”, “One slap”, “Queen line” et la première ascension de “Erebor”. À coup sûr un des grimpeurs parmi les plus expérimentés en matière d’extrême sur la planète !
Yesterday, Stefano Ghisolfi claimed the first ascent of an extreme project at Eremo di San Paolo, Arco, Italy with “The Lonely Mountain”! This route is the direct exit of “Erebor” (around 9b), a route Stefano established last January. Stefano wasn’t able to send this directissima, added a bolt to the left and created “Erebor”. “The Lonely Mountain” is special for him because it was the first route he bolted (in June 2020) so it marks the end of a 36-month process.
“Ended the year just as it started, with the ascent of the very first route I bolted in my life. And this is actually the first version I bolted in June 2020, it looked impossible at first so I added a bolt on the left and climbed “Erebor” last January. After that, I figured out the original version was possible and started trying the middle section, which is hard and exclusive of this route, adding some spicy moves with a dynamic from a very tiny crimp. It felt very hard at the beginning, then I changed almost all the betas in every section and finally climbed it today. And it’s even harder to grade it, so I can suggest a symbolic 9b, even if it is harder than “Erebor”.“
It’s Stefano’s 9th route in the 9b range and above, without counting “Lapsus” and “La Capella” as they may not be as hard as first thought. Stefano has climbed three 9b+ (“Perfecto Mundo”, “Bibliographie” and “Change”), repeated “FRFM”, “Stoking the fire”, “One Slap”, “Queen line” and did the first ascent of “Erebor”. For sure one of the strongest rock climbers in the world!
Quelques jours après Jakob Schubert, c’est au tour d’Alex Megos de réussir le court 9b du secteur éponyme de Siurana, “La capella”. Il complète ainsi la trilogie de voies évaluées autour du 9b du secteur avec “King Capella” et “Furia de Jabali”
Voici son commentaire suite à sa croix : “Je l’ai trouvé dure pour être honnête. J’ai eu pas mal de problèmes au mouvement d’inversée en photo et je suis tombé là pendant quelques jours. Il semblerait qu’il y ait un peu de confusion concernant les cotations de secteur Capella de Siurana donc je vais écrire un post pour montrer comment c’est dur et une question de ressenti personnel quand il s’agit d’évaluer la difficulté des voies. Mais qu’importe la cotation, c’était un challenge fun et sympa.
Etant donné qu’Alex est le seul avec Will Bosi à avoir répété les 3 voies les plus dures des lieux, son avis sera intéressant. Voici en bonus la vidéo de son ascension de “Furia de Jabali”. Concernant “La capella”, c’est la 6ème ascension de la voie après Ondra, Ghisolfi, Woods, Bosi et Schubert.
Few days after Jakob Schubert, ALex Megos signed a repeat of short and powerful 9b “La capella” in Siurana. he completes the trilogy of the 3 hard routes around 9b of this sector, with “Furia de Jabali” and “King Capella”. Here is his comment:
“This one felt very hard to me if I’m honest. I had a lot of trouble with this undercling move on the picture and fell there quite a few days. Looks like there is a bit of confusion about the grades here at the Capella sector and I’ll also write a post to show how hard and how individual grading and difficulties of routes can be. No matter the grade though, it was fun and a good challenge.”
Since Alex is the only one with Will Bosi to have rehearsed the 3 toughest routes around, his opinion will be interesting. Here is as a bonus the video of his ascent of “Furia de Jabali”. Regarding “La capella”, it is the 6th ascent of the route after Ondra, Ghisolfi, Woods, Bosi and Schubert.
Il y a quelques jours, Loic Zehani a annoncé la première ascension d’un projet au secteur historique du bout du Monde de Buoux avec “Jusqu’au bout du monde” 8c+/9a. Cette ligne juste à gauche du 8a+ classique de “Tabou” avait été équipée par François Legrand et restait invaincue. Voici le ressenti de Loic, qui ne compte pas s’arrêter là concernant les chantiers invaincus de la célèbre falaise du Lubéron…
“Comme je suis allé 2-3 fois dans le “Bombé bleu” mais que je n’arrive toujours pas à faire le premier mouvement, j’ai voulu changer de secteur et je me souvenais que François m’avait dit qu’il y avait un projet au bout du monde. J’étais donc motivé pour voir comment était la voie. Cela m’a pris seulement 4 essais à ma grande surprise mais il faut dire que les conditions étaient très bonnes. C’est une très belle voie où François avait seulement sikaté quelques réglettes pour consolider. Les préhensions sont un peu atypiques pour du Buoux car c’est plus sur des petites réglettes et moins sur des trous. La principale difficulté est condensée sur 13 mouvements de la 3ème à la 6ème dégaine avec deux clippages durs. D’ailleurs juste à gauche de cette voie, j’essaye maintenant un autre projet (qui avait été partiellement équipé par Marc Lemenestrel) qui sera sûrement du même acabit que le “Bombé bleu”, moins aléatoire mais peut-être plus dur. Les mouvements font mais il y en a 23…”
Some days ago, Loic Zehani claimed the first ascent of an old project located at the Bout du monde, Buoux’s historical sector. “Jusqu’au bout du monde” (8c+/9a) is just left to “Tabou” and was bolted by François Legrand, remaining unclimbed. Here are below Loic’s comments, and French crusher doesn’t want to stop now concerning the projects of the famous crag of Lubéron, France…
“I went 2-3 times in “Le Bombé Bleu”, but couldn’t stick the first move, so I wanted to change the sector and I remembered that François told me there was a project in Bout du Monde. So I was curious to see how it was. It surprisingly took me only 4 tries, but the conditions were perfect. It’s a nice line with some edges, not typical here. The main difficulty is between 3rd and 6th bolt, with 2 hard clips and 13 hard moves. Now I’m trying the line just one the left, a project bolted by Marc Le Menestrel, for me the same level than “Bombé bleu”, may be with less low-purcentage moves but may be harder. I arrive to do the moves, but they are 23…”
Ryuichi Murai vient de libérer un nouveau bloc dur au Japon avec la première ascension de “Floatin” ou le “Launch pad project” dans le parc naturel de Mizugakiyama. Essayé par Tomoa Narasaki en personne, et resté invaincu, ce bloc en granite très pur de 6 mouvements propose deux furieux premiers mouvements très aléatoires où il n’y a quasiment pas besoin des pieds. Après un premier blocage Pan Güllich pendu sur 2 arquées pour aller chercher une main gauche en épaule en no foot, vient un incroyable derviche sans les pieds, suivi d’une horloge et d’un dernier puissant blocage pour arriver au réta.
Ryuichi commente : “Dernier jour meilleur jour ! Juste avant que le parc ne ferme, j’ai réalisé mon rêve avec le “Launch Pad Project”. Pendant le travail, j’ai lutté avec des problèmes mentaux et physiques… une peau des doigts qui s’endommageait vite à cause d’une granite abrasif, des conditions autour de 0°, 2 mouvements très aléatoires à faible pourcentage de réussite… Mais j’ai maintenant la satisfaction d’avoir accompli et surmonté quelque chose d’incommensurable. Cela a été un des meilleurs jours d’escalade de ma vie !”
Ryuichi Murai just freed a new hard line in Japan with the first ascent of “Floatin” V16 aka “Launch Pad Project” in Mizugakiyama park. Tried unsuccessfully by Tomoa Narasaki, this granite boulder is very pure, 6 moves with the 2 first moves with low-probability 2 first moves where you don’t have to use your feet. After hanging on 2 crimps and campusing into a left gaston, you have to do a bi cross before a powerful deadpoint move to the top of the boulder.
Ryuichi comments: “Last day best day! Just before the gate closed, realized my dream “Launch Pad project”! In the process of completion, struggled with many physical and mental factors.. severe finger skin damage from sharp granite, 0℃ cold condition, two low-probability savage cruxes..etc…but the sense of fulfillment gained after overcoming them is immeasurable. It was best day to find growth in my climbing life!”
It’s Ryuichi’s second V16 first ascent here after “Decided SD” 2 years ago and 3rd 8C+ first ascent with “Nexus” located in Shiobara.
Sur place depuis quelques jours, le champion autrichien Jakob Schubert a fait parler la poudre aujourd’hui avec les répétitions de 2 voies très dures à Siurana : “King Capella”, immédiatement suivie de “La Capella”. La première a été libérée par Will Bosi ce printemps et “La Capella” ouverte par Adam Ondra il y a 10 ans. Pour les 2 lignes, Schubert suggère respectivement des décotations à 9b dur et 9a+. Ce qu’on commençait à pressentir concernant la répétition éclair d’Alex Megos il y a peu, ce dernier ne s’étant pas prononcé sur le niveau…
Voici le post laissé sur les réseaux par Jakob : “A mon 4ème jour dans la voie j’ai été capable de réussir la seconde répétition de “King Capella” et 2 heures après j’ai pu me remettre un combat et réussir aussi “La Capella”, une ligne complètement indépendante, afin de finir une journée parfaite ! Merci pour l’émulation Alfons Dornauer ! Concernant les cotations, c’est difficile de statuer, en particulier dans des voies bloc mais je les vois un niveau plus facile que ce que suggéré précédemment… “King Capella” est plutôt 9b dur et “La capella” n’est pas plus dur que 9a+, mais ce ne sont que mes ressentis.”
On rappelle qu’avant ce faits d’armes Jakob Schubert avait déjà à son palmarès cinq 9b (“Stoking the fire”, “Neanderthal”, “Planta de Shiva”, “Fight or flight” et “El Bon combat”) et un 9b+ confirmé (“Perfecto Mundo”).
Arriving just a few days ago, Austrian champion Jakob Schubert was on fire today with the sends of 2 very hard routes in Siurana: “King Capella”, immediately followed by “La Capella”. The first ascent of “King Capella” was done by Will Bosi last Spring and “La Capella” opened by Adam Ondra a decade ago. For both lines Schubert suggests a downgrade, respectively 9b hard and 9a+. This confirms what we were beginning to assume after the recent send of Alex Megos of “King Capella” in a very quick time too, even though Alex did not give his opinion of the matter… Here is the comment left by Jakob on social media:
On my 4th day on the route I was able to do the 2nd repetition of King Capella and just 2 hours later I could fight my way up La Capella (which is a completely separate line) as well to end a perfect day! Thanks for the psyche Alfons Dornauer! Talking about the grades is difficult as always especially on these bouldery routes but I could see them both being one grade easier than previously suggested.. “King Capella” probably felt like a hard 9b to me and “La Capella” definitely didn’t feel harder than 9a+ but those are just my thoughts.
Remember that before this amazing journey Jakob ticked previously 5 9b (“Stoking the fire”, “Neanderthal”, “Planta de Shiva”, “Fight or flight” and “El Bon combat”) and one 9b+ (“Perfecto Mundo”).

Après un premier trip sur place au début de l’année, Brooke Raboutou empoche à nouveau un bloc dur avec le panneau très à doigts de “Trieste” 8B+. Ce classique de Red Rocks (Nevada, US) avait été ouvert par Paul Robinson en 2014, il est situé au secteur de First Creek Canyon. Il aura fallu 3 jours à Brooke lors de second séjour, empochant le bloc au dernier essai de la journée.
Cette dernière commente sur Instagram : “Bon sang, cela fait du bien de rétablir en haut de ce bloc qui m’avait poussée dans mes retranchements au niveau physique et mental il y a un an. De retour, je me suis sentie plus forte, j’ai pu mettre les états d’âme et la pression de côté, contrairement au précédent séjour. J’adore me dépasser et me perfectionner pour ce genre de choses, c’est un processus que je veux continuer à entretenir. Au projet suivant !”
C’est déjà le 3ème 8B+ bloc de Brooke qui avait déjà réalisé “Muscle Car” et “Jade”. Et l’histoire n’est peut-être pas finie puisque le départ assis de “Trieste” (8C) est potentiellement dans son viseur…
After a first trip to the area at the beginning of 2021, Brooke Raboutou just completed one of the hard classics of Red Rocks, Nevada, with “Trieste” V14 opened by Paul Robinson in 2014. The boulder went down on her last try of the 3rd day. Brooke wrote on Instagram:
“Damn, it feels good to stand on top of a boulder that pushed my physical and mental limits a year ago. Coming back, I felt much stronger and was able to let go of expectations and lighten the pressure I put on myself the previous trip. The process of pushing myself and growing from it is one I will forever admire and continue to chase. Onto the next project!“
It’s her third V14, Brooke having already climbed “Muscle Car” and “Jade”. The story is maybe not finished because “Trieste” has a sit start in the 8C range which could be her next target. Wait and see…
En septembre dernier, Mathieu Bouyoud bouclait son super-projet de plusieurs années sur la falaise locale de La Balme de Yenne (Savoie) avec la première ascension de “Team Frisouille” 9a+. Après une ribambelle de voies dures à son actif, le falaisiste chambérien signait ici son second 9a+, perf rééditée il y a quelques semaines avec une répétition de “Papichulo” à Oliana. Avec ces deux réalisations majeures, Mathieu est assurément un des meilleurs performeurs français en milieu naturel en 2021. Voici une vidéo montrant les difficultés de “Team Frisouille”, qui offre 30 mètres hyper résistants et à doigts… Histoire d’appâter d’éventuels prétendants !
Last September, Mathieu Bouyoud completed his big multi-year project at his local crag of La Balme de Yenne (Savoie, France), with the first ascent of “Team Frisouille” 9a+. After a bunch of hard routes to his credit, the rock climber from Chambéry ticked his second 9a+ here, followed a few weeks ago with a repeat of “Papichulo” in Oliana. With these two major achievements, Mathieu is undoubtedly one of the best French rock climbers in 2021. Here is a video showing the difficulties of this 30-meter route, which is extremely sustained and fingery. Enjoy!

*** Jorge Diaz-Rullo réalise la 3ème ascension de “Samfaina” à Margalef, qui n’est autre que son projet secondaire de Finestra après “Cafe Colombia”. La voie est plutôt continue avec deux mouvements très durs sur bidoigts. Libérée par Chris Sharma en 2010 et immédiatement répétée par Ramon Julian, cette voie est restée ensuite sans nouvelle ascension pendant plus d’une décennie. Jorge propose 9a+ pour “Samfaina”, la jugeant plus dure que les autres 9a qu’il a réalisés dans ce mur.
*** “PapiChulo” de nouveau répété : quelques semaines après Mathieu Bouyoud, c’est cette fois-ci le grimpeur autrichien Stefan Scherz qui clippe le relais. Un peu plus de 2 mois après s’être cassé le pied et s’être donné comme défi de revenir plus fort pour réussir son premier 9a+, Stefan Scherz a tenu son pari à Oliana ! Âgé de seulement 20 ans et avec déjà quelques voies en 9ème degré à son actif, le compétiteur habitant Innsbruck semble en pleine progression. Jakob Schubert va commencer à regarder dans ses rétroviseurs !
*** Quelques jours après “King Capella”, Alex Megos réalise la seconde ascension de l’autre voie extrême du secteur Capella de Siurana libérée ce printemps par Will Bosi, “Furia de Jabali” 9b. Toujours sans se prononcer sur le niveau, Alex annonce 7 jours de travail et 3 gros steaks notamment dus à des conditions très froides avant sa réussite.

Jorge proposes 9a+ for this one, that he finds harder than the other 9a’s he climbed on this impressive wall.
*** A new repeat of “papichulo” : few weeks after Mathieu Bouyoud, Austrian climber Stefan Scherz just clipped the anchor of Oliana’s kingline, “Papichulo”. 20 years old and few 9a’s under his belt, the competitor from Inssbruck seems to be in huge progression. Jakob Schubert will start to have a look in the mirror…
*** Few days after “King Capella”, Alex Megos is finishing the business in Capella sector of Siurana with “Furia de Jabali”, second ascent. Freed this spring by British climber Will Bosi, this short and sharp line took to Alex 7 days of projecting and 3 splits of his fingers due to very cold weather.
Le grimpeur italien Jacopo Larcher vient de réaliser la première répétition de la voie “Into the Sun” la semaine dernière. Cette voie de trad avait été établie en 2017 par Bernd Zangerl à Murgtal en Suisse; elle combine une traversée et une voie très courte et explosive en trad proche du highball. Jacopo commente sa réalisation :
“Après notre expédition au Pakistan, j’ai ressenti le besoin de me concentrer à nouveau sur les couennes et les blocs, au moins pendant quelques mois. Pas de course à pied, pas de longues journées en montagne : juste du caillou et (pour moi) des mouvements difficiles ! Dernièrement, je me suis particulièrement intéressé à l’exploration des différents aspects de l’escalade traditionnelle. Au sein de cette même discipline, il existe une grande variété de styles, souvent complètement opposés, ce qui la rend si intéressante pour moi. Je me souviens avoir lu l’article sur la première ascension d’ “Into the sun” par Bernd et avoir été très curieux. Cela semblait être quelque chose de différent de toutes les autres ascensions traditionnelles que j’avais essayées ou vues, ce qui m’a motivé encore plus à y aller et y jeter un œil. Je pense que c’est important de parcourir les premières ascensions des autres ; c’est inspirant et rafraîchissant de découvrir des visions différentes, peut-être sortir de notre zone de confort et ouvrir notre esprit à différentes possibilités. Chacun voit quelque chose de différent debout devant un rocher et trouve différentes solutions/approches pour le gravir. Cette variété de visions et cet échange est ce qui fait grandir notre sport et nous-mêmes !
Cet automne, j’ai finalement décidé d’aller à Murtgal et rendre visite à l’itinéraire de Bernd. C’était ma première fois là-bas et je suis vraiment tombé amoureux de cette vallée calme et magnifique ! Le rocher qui broute n’est pas le meilleur que vous souhaiteriez, mais la nature et le calme rendent cet endroit si spécial. “Into the sun” est situé sur un gros rocher qui héberge plusieurs problèmes, il en traverse tout le bloc de droite à gauche. L’itinéraire est essentiellement une rallonge de sortie du highball déjà existant de Bernd appelé “V.I.P.” (“Very Important Papagei“), qui se termine sur un bac à côté d’un relais boulonné. C’est de loin la partie la plus difficile de toute la montée, après avoir sauté les points, on traverse à gauche avec une grosse fissure évidente et termine sur l’autre face du rocher avec un réta légèrement plus dur. Cette toute dernière section a été escaladée comme un highball, une approche bien différente du trad’. L’escalade est facile, mais le rocher est souvent humide et ne semble pas toujours solide, c’est pourquoi je pense qu’il est encore plus logique de l’escalader avec du matériel au lieu de le faire comme un highball. En tant que grimpeur traditionnel, c’est exactement comme ça que je l’aurais ouvert. Après la première session, j’avais de bonnes sensations, car je pouvais gravir le long problème de bloc en deux sections, mais les derniers mouvements (du problème de bloc) se sont avérés être un véritable combat pour moi et j’ai dû investir plusieurs sessions supplémentaires et beaucoup d’énergies pour finalement le gravir. Le plus gros problème, en dehors de la difficulté intrinsèque, étaient les conditions. En raison du brouillard, les prises, particulièrement les prises de départ, étaient pour la plupart humides, je devais donc essayer de gravir le reste du bloc avec des chaussons et mains mouillées. La période chargée d’ouverture de voies que je traversais n’a pas aidé à profiter des rares jours de bonnes condis dehors, mais m’a donné une motivation supplémentaire pour tirer le meilleur parti de chaque session ! Après être tombé plusieurs fois dans le dernier mouvement, le dernier jour avant la grosse tempête de neige (alias fin de saison possible pour ITS), j’ai réussi à l’enchainer avec des conditions idéales : c’était une si bonne sensation ! Honnêtement, j’étais content de la décision de gravir la dernière section en mode trad plutôt que highball, car mes doigts étaient complètement engourdis dans la fissure et je ne sentais plus rien avec l’onglée au dernier rétablissement.
Alors maintenant, la grande question, que tout le monde me pose, est… Qu’est-ce que “Into the sun” ? Est-ce une voie traditionnelle ou un highball ? Comment peut-on décrire cet itinéraire ? Honnêtement pour moi la plus grande question est autre… Doit-on tout nommer et tout faire rentrer dans une case ? Personnellement je ne pense pas ! Pour moi, “Into the sun” est la vision de Bernd sur la façon de gravir un beau rocher. C’est ainsi qu’il s’est mis au défi et s’est remis à grimper après une blessure qui, selon les médecins, ne lui permettrait plus de grimper. Il a réussi à surmonter cet énorme défi et en a lancé un nouveau pour les autres grimpeurs. Je l’assume, je l’ai trouvé vraiment difficile et j’ai vraiment apprécié le processus. C’est ce que je pense que l’escalade devrait être. Quelqu’un d’autre aurait équipé, quelqu’un d’autre l’aurait taillé, quelqu’un d’autre l’aurait tenté en solo et probablement la plupart n’auraient jamais imaginé l’escalader…
Je pense que Bernd l’a grimpé dans le meilleur style et personnellement, je l’aurais fait de la même manière si cela avait été mon ouverture. La seule chose que j’aurais fait différemment, c’est le départ : pour moi, il aurait été plus logique de commencer par le départ debout du bloc au lieu d’ajouter les premiers mouvements difficiles… mais encore une fois, c’est exactement ce qui est cool avec l’escalade , tout le monde voit quelque chose de différent. Merci encore pour l’expérience Bernd et bien joué pour la première ascension… et bien sûr un grand merci à Babsi, Mauro, Andrea et Michi pour leur soutien. Cela n’aurait pas été possible sans vous!”
Italian climber Jacopo Larcher successfully made the first repeat of Bernd Zangerl’s route “Into The Sun” last week. This trad climb was established by Bernd in 2017 in Murgtal, Switzerland.
Jacopo comments: “After our expedition to Pakistan I felt the need to focus again just on single pitches and boulders, at least for some months. No running, no long days in the mountains: just rock and (for me) hard moves! Lately I’ve been particularly interested in exploring the different aspects of trad climbing. Within this same discipline there is a wide variety of styles, often completely opposite, which makes it so interesting to me. I remember reading the article about Bernd’s first ascent of the “Into the sun” and being very curious about it. It seemed to be something different from all the other trad climbs I’d tried or seen, which motivated me even more to go and have a look at it. I like, and I think it’s important, to check out other’s first ascents; it’s inspiring and refreshing to see other’s visions, maybe get out of our comfort zone and open our mind to different possibilities. Everyone sees something different while standing in front of a piece of rock and finds different solutions/approaches to climb it. This variety of visions and this exchange is what makes our sport and ourselves growing!
This fall I finally decided to go Murtgal and check Bernd’s route out. It was my first time there and I honestly fell in love with that quiet and beautiful valley! The sharp rock isn’t the best you would wish for, but the nature and the quietness make that place so special. “Into the sun” is located on a big boulder, which hosts several problems, and it traverses the entire block from the right to the left. The route is basically a top out of Bernd’s existing highball called “V.I.P. (Very Important Papagei)”, which ends on a jug next to a bolted belay. This is by far the hardest part of the entire climb; after skipping the bolts, you traverse left on an obvious big crack and top out on the other side of the boulder with a slightly harder mantle. This very last section has been climbed as a highball stating from a different problem. The climbing is easy, but the rock is often wet and doesn’t seem always solid, that’s why I think it makes even more sense to climb it on gear instead of doing it as a highball. As a trad climber, that’s exactly how I would do it. After the first session I had a good feeling, as I could climb the long boulder problem in two sections, but the last few moves (of the boulder problem) turned out to be a real struggle for me and I had to invest several more sessions and a lot of energies to eventually climb it.
The biggest struggle, apart from the hard climbing, were the conditions. Due to the fog, the starting holds/footholds where mostly damp, so you had to try to climb the rest of the boulder with wet climbing shoes/hands. The packed period of routesetting didn’t help to take advantage of the sporadic good daysbut gave me an extra motivation boost for making the best out of every session! After falling off the very last move many times, he last day before the big snow storm (aka possible end of the season for ITS) I managed to climb it first go with prime freezing conditions: it was such a good feeling! I honestly was happy with the decision to climb the last section as trad climb, as my fingers got completely numb in the crack and I couldn’t feel anything on the last mantle.
So now the big question, which everyone is asking me, is… What is “Into the sun”? Is it a (green point) trad climb or an highball? How can we describe it? Honestly for me the biggest question is another one… Do we need to give a name to everything and fit in into a box? I personally don’t think so! For me “Into the sun” is Bernd’s vision of how to climb a nice piece of rock. It was the way how he challenged himself and got back to climbing after an injury, which according to the doctors wouldn’t allow him to climb anymore. He managed to overcome this huge challenge and set a new one for the other climbers. I take it on, found it really hard and I really enjoyed the process. That’s what I believe climbing should be. Someone else would have bolted, someone else would have chipped it, someone else would have free solo it and probably the most part would have never imagined to climb it…
I think he did it in the best style and I personally would have done it the same way if this would have been my FA. The only thing I would have done different is the start, for me it would have make more sense to start from the stand start of the boulder, instead of adding the first few hard moves… but once again, that’s exactly the cool thing about climbing, everyone sees something different. Les derniers 8C+ bloc sont l’oeuvre de l’américain Taylor McNeill et du belge Simon Lorenzi ! Après 3 ans d’efforts et plus de 50 jours de travail, Taylor a réussi la première ascension de “Moonlight Sonata”, le bloc le plus dur de Joe’s Valley, une proue à compression qu’il propose à 8C+, vidéo ci-dessous à la clé. Jusqu’alors, Taylor avait déjà réussi quelques blocs extrêmes comme “Squoze” (8C) , “Southern Drawl” (8C) ou encore “The Big Island” (8B+/C à Bleau).
On n’avait pas donné de ses nouvelles depuis l’ouverture de “Soudain Seul”, le Belge Simon Lorenzi vient quant à lui d’annoncer une répétition du classique Suisse de Val Bavona “Off the wagon low start” 8C+ après les ascensions de Raboutou, Webb, Woods et Cameroni. Voici son commentaire laissé sur les réseaux sociaux : “J’ai essayé la version basse de bloc le jour où j’ai réussi le grand mouvement du départ debout. Après avoir passé quelques sessions sur ce bloc ces deux derniers mois, tombant à chaque fois au même mouvement j’ai finalement trouvé la clé il y a 2 semaines pendant une nuit pluvieuse. C’était mon dernier jour et le réta était mouillé donc j’ai décidé de trouver quelque chose pour dompter davantage ce mouvement clé. J’ai réglé de petits détails qui m’a permis de faire le mouvement 5 fois sur 10. Du coup j’ai compris que la session suivante pouvait être la bonne. Cette semaine je suis venu à Sonlerto pour une session. Le seul jour grimpable était hier à cause de la pluie. Donc j’ai fait la route depuis la Belgique (9 heures) mardi en espérant que ce jour serait assez. J’ai commencé à essayer à 15h mais après 3 heures et environ 15 essais je tombais toujours à ce fameux mouvement, et je commençais à devenir fou et vraiment fatigué. Ma dernière option a été de prendre un gros repos et je suis allé voir Clem Lechaptois et Dave Graham essayer “Roadkill” pendant une heure. Je suis revenu pour donner mes derniers essais. Après une première tentative pas terrible, j’ai décidé de remettre immédiatement un nouvel essai pour garder mes sensations dans le crux. Cela s’est passé bien mieux que prévu, et quelques cris plus tard, j’étais au sommet du bloc !”
The latest 8C+ boulder sends are the business of the American Taylor McNeill and the Belgian Simon Lorenzi! After 3 years of effort and more than 50 days of work, Taylor has successfully completed the first ascent of “Moonlight Sonata”, the hardest boulder in Joe’s Valley, a compression prow that he proposes at 8C+, video below. Until then, Taylor had already succeeded in some extreme boulders like “Squoze” (8C), “Southern Drawl” (8C) or even “The Big Island” (8B+/C in Bleau).
Quite silent since his first ascent of “Soudain Seul”, The Belgian Simon Lorenzi has just announced a repeat of the Swiss classic of Val Bavona “Off the wagon low start” 8C + after the ascents of Raboutou, Webb, Woods and Cameroni. Here is his comment left on social media: “I started to try the low start as soon as i did the big move from the stand once. After spending few sessions in the boulder the last two months and falling at the same move every time i finally found the key 2 weeks ago during a rainy night. It was my last day and the top out was wet so i decided to try something to improve THE crux move. Surprisingly i found a small trick and did the move around 5 times out of 10 tries. From there i felt that the next session could be the one. So this week i went to Sonlerto for one session. The only climbable day was yesterday because of the rain so i did the road from belgium (9hrs) thuesday hoping that the day after would be enough. Wednsday i started to try at 3pm but after 3 hours and 15th tries falling at the same f****** move i was going crazy but also too tired. My last option was to have a big rest so i went to see Dave Graham and Clément Lechaptois trying “Road Kill” for 1h. I came back to the Wagon to give my last few attempts. My first attempt was’nt very good so i decided to go quickly afterwards to keep the feeling of the crux. It worked better than expected and few screams later i was standing on the top of the boulder!”

“What We Do In The Shadows”, que vient de libérer Robbie Phillips en fait désormais partie, avec une suggestion à E10 7A, ou 8c ! Le grimpeur pro Robbie Phillips a découvert cette voie à Duntelchaig dans les Highlands écossais après le premier confinement, mais n’était pas assez fort… Après un hiver de drame familial, d’entraînement et de confinement supplémentaire, il s’est préparé pour le projet et l’a réussi. Quelques minutes après, la légende écossaise Dave McLeod, avec qui il l’avait travaillée, réalisait d’ailleurs la première répétition. Toutes les infos sur cette ouverture dans la vidéo ci-dessous!
There are only a handful of trad climbs in the world with climbing as difficult as 8c… “Cobra crack”, “Meltdown”, “Magic Line“, “Recovery drink”, “Lapoterapia”, maybe “Tribe”… “What We Do In The Shadows”, just freed by Robbie Phillips is one of them, with an E10 7A, or 8c suggestion! Robbie Phillips found this rock climb at Duntelchaig in the Scottish highlands after the first lockdown, but wasn’t strong enough… After a winter family loss and lockdown training on his home wall, he prepared himself for the project and sent it. A few minutes later, Scottish legend Dave McLeod, with whom he worked the line from the beginning, did the first repeat. Watch the video below!
On le savait, Alex Megos était à Siurana depuis le début du mois. Le mutant allemand vient de réaliser la seconde ascension de “King Capella”, le 9b+ ouvert par le grimpeur britannique Will Bosi le printemps dernier qui se compose de 15 mètres complètement explosifs ! Voici le commentaire d’Alex via les réseaux sociaux :
“C’était la voie pour laquelle je suis venu à Siurana, après l’avoir checkée en mars, just après que Will Bosi a fait la première. Déjà à l’époque je m’étais rendu compte que cela me convenait plutôt bien, alors avec Jenya Kazbekova nous avons décidé de passer quelques semaines en Espagne pour essayer des voies dures. Neuf jours dans la voie et deux steaks plus tard, j’ai pu réaliser la première répétition de cette voie très courte et à doigts. J’ai aussi utilisé une méthode légèrement différente de Will, en prenant une très large pince, une méthode que je juge plus facile que celle de Will. Il ne pouvait pas faire le mouvement comme je l’ai réalisé donc je pense que c’est une préférence personnelle. Très curieux d’entendre de voir ce que d’autres en pensent ! “
Sans se prononcer sur le niveau, Alex réalise une nouvelle voie dure en escalade sportive, lui qui a déjà un impressionnant CV avec le premier 9a à vue de l’histoire, justement à Siurana, les ouvertures de voies en 9b et plus comme “Bibliographie”, “Perfecto Mundo”, “Fight Club”, ou encore une répétition de 9b référence comme “FRFM”.
As we know, Alex Megos has been in Siurana since the beginning of the month. The German beast has just made the second ascent of “King Capella”, the 9b + opened by British climber Will Bosi last spring, which offers 15 meters of completely explosive climbing! Here is Alex’s comment via social media:
“That was the route I came to Siurana for, after checking it out once last March, right after Will Bosi made the FA. Already back then I realized that it suites me pretty well so together with Jenya Kazbkova we decided to spend a few weeks in Spain to have enough time for hard routes. After nine days on the route and two splits later I could get the first repeat of this very short and very crimpy test piece. I also used slightly different beta than Will taking a very wide pinch, which felt a little easier to me than what Will did. He couldn’t do the move the way I did it though, so I guess it’s personal preference. Very curious to hear what other people think!“
Without commenting on the grade, Alex just did a new hard route, he who already has an impressive CV with the first 9a onsight, precisely in Siurana, the first ascent of routes in 9b and more like “Bibliographie”,” Perfecto Mundo “,”Fight Club “, or even a repetition of famous the 9b from Chris Sharma, ” FRFM “.

Dans un long article ce printemps, nous tentions de mettre en exergue l’importance de la préservation en escalade en milieu naturel. Le court-métrage “Les Emmerdeurs” traite de la cause écologique à travers du cas de l’emblématique falaise de Claret dans l’Hérault. Haut lieu de l’escalade sportive dans le Sud de la France dans les 90’s sous l’impulsion de grimpeurs locaux iconiques comme Lucien Berardini, Pierre Rouzo ou Hugues Beauzille, Claret n’en demeure pas moins, comme beaucoup d’autres sites, un refuge ornithologique et un havre de biodiversité. C’est à l’issue d’une concertation entre équipeurs locaux et naturalistes qu’il a été décidé de déséquiper tout un secteur situé à gauche de la falaise afin de permettre le survie de certaines espèces. In a long article this Spring, we tried to highlight the importance of environment preservation in rockclimbing. The short film “Les Emmerdeurs” deals with the ecological cause through the case of the emblematic crag of Claret in Hérault. High place of sportclimbing in the South of France in the 90’s with iconic local climbers like Lucien Berardini, Pierre Rouzo or Hugues Beauzille, Claret is like many other climbing places a refuge for birds and a haven of biodiversity. After a consultation between local climbers and naturalists the decision was taken to take off the bolts in an entire sector located to the left of the cliff in order to allow the survival of certain species. Après Sasha DiGiulian, Margo Hayes, Michaela Kiersch et Annie Chouinard, la grimpeuse allemande Solveig Korherr, 23 ans a réussi dimanche la cinquième ascension féminine de la classique dure de Red River Gorge, “Pure Imagination”. La grimpeuse allemande, âgée de 23 ans, qui a réalisé son premier 9a cet été avec “La Cabane au Canada”, est aussi une amoureuse du Red. En 2019, Solveig y avait déjà enchainé “Lucifer”, puis projeté “Pure Imagination”, une ligne qui était restée ancrée dans sa tête depuis 2 ans. Sur son compte Instagram, Solveig commente :
“Cette voie m’avait échappée la dernière fois que j’étais là. Pendant deux ans, j’ai été obsédée par l’idée de revenir. C’était une de mes lignes de rêve ! La première fois que je l’ai essayée, j’ai été époustouflée par le fait qu’il soit possible de tenir ces petites arquées dans un panneau aussi déversant. J’ai persévéré un peu et fait de rapides progrès, mais je n’étais pas assez en forme pour pouvoir empiler toutes les sections. Il y a une semaine, nous sommes revenus dans le Red et j’ai tout de suite sauté sur “Pure Imagination”. J’étais motivée comme jamais ! J’ai enfin pu élever mon niveau. Je me sentais plus forte sur les prises, notamment dans la dernière partie très soutenue, mais j’en bavais pas mal encore au crux du bas avec cette fameuse arquée qui te coupe les doigts, aiguisée comme un couperet. Dimanche, avec des conditions polaires et une bonne ambiance à la falaise, j’ai été capable d’enchainer la partie du bas et de clipper le relais ! Merci à tout le monde pour les encouragements !”
After Sasha DiGiulian, Margo Hayes, Michaela Kiersch and Annie Chouinard, Solveig Korherr became the 5th woman to clip the anchor of the mega classic “Pure Imagination”, Red River Gorge, USA. The German rockclimber, 23, who sent her first 9a this summer with “La Cabane au Canada” is also fond of the Kentucky mecca. On her previous trip in 2019, Solveig climbed “Lucifer”, then projected “Pure Imagination”, a line which has stayed in her mind for the last 2 years! She reports on Instagram:
“This was the one that got away last time that I was in the Red. I have been obsessed with coming back to it for the last two years. It is a dream line of mine! The first time I went up it, I was mind-blown at how it would even be possible to hold on to these tiny little crimps on such a steep panel. I persevered a bit and made some very good progress back then but I just wasn’t quite fit enough to link all the sections.
One week ago we finally made it back to the Red and I immediately hopped on Pure Imagination. My psych was flying high over the moon! I could definitely tell that I levelled up. I felt much stronger on the holds especially in the sustained upper part but I was still struggling a bit with the lower crux with the famous crimp that cuts your fingers and that is as thin as the sharp edge of a knife.
On Sunday with some icy conditions and phenomenal vibes at the cliff, I was able to climb through the lower part and managed to clip the anchors! Thanks everybody for cheering on!“
Une des voies les plus difficiles des US, “Flex Luthor”, vient d’être répétée par le grimpeur américain Carlo Traversi. Située au magnifique secteur perché Fortress of Solitude de Rifle (Colorado), “Flex Luthor” a été établie par Tommy Caldwell il y a près de 20 ans (en 2003) ; elle n’est autre que le premier 5.15 (9a+) des USA. La seconde ascension vient d’avoir lieu il y a quelques jours grâce à Matty Hong qui propose une réévaluation à 9b. C’est au tour de Carlo qui a travaillé la voie avec Matty de boucler aussi le projet, un enchainement extrêmement résistant de 30 mètres qui lui aura donné du fil à retordre. C’est la 4ème voie en 9ème degré pour Carlo, un grimpeur polyvalent capable d’éclats en falaise (on lui doit la première ascension d’Empath), en bloc avec une répétition de “Creature from the black lagoon” 8C+, en trad avec “Meldown” 8c+ ou en big wall avec une répétition de “Magic Mushroom” à El Cap. Un film sur l’ascension de “Flex Luthor” sortira prochainement.
One of the most difficult routes in the United States, “Flex Luthor”, has just been repeated by American climber Carlo Traversi.
