Cette année, le Banff Festival est au format 100% VOD, pandémie oblige. Le côté positif de cette formule est que l’organisation nous a concocté un programme 100% escalade (“le programme vert”) avec 4 films de grimpe pour encore plus d’aventures verticales !

Ten thousand bolts

Ce documentaire de 20 minutes réalisé par les américains Duncan Sullivan, Alex Levin & Ashley Benzwie est consacré à Toni Arbones, principal équipeur et local emblématique de Siurana, une des Mecques de l’escalade en Catalogne. En parallèle de son portrait, Tony dresse l’historique des lieux avec les premières voies sportives dans les années 90, une quarantaine de lignes, et cette piste cabossée atroce qui menait au village en raison de la présence d’un ex-dignitaire nazi tenant le village. Le potentiel des lieux est immense, un terrain de jeu incroyable pour Toni qui équipe par an entre 25 et 100 voies et possède un millier de voies à son actif. Ce boulimique d’ouverture est à l’origine de la renommée du village, qui compte désormais 1700 couennes. Un véritable passionné, limite hyper actif et un brin excentrique qui semble avoir le développement de l’escalade dans la peau. Bien que le film soit assez réussi, on aurait aimé davantage de contenu culturel et personnel sur les techniques d’équipement de Toni, ses positions éthiques comme sur la taille des prises, ou encore ses coups de cœur, son ressenti sur les voies mythiques. « Ten thousand bolts » demeure un sympathique tour du proprio.

Free as can be

Mark Hudon 63 ans, est un des pionniers du Yosemite. Mark y a participé à la naissance de l’escalade libre dans les années 70. Près de 40 ans après ses exploits dans la vallée, Mark se lie avec le jeune Jordan Cannon, 25 ans, pratiquant féru d’escalade historique, pour tenter un incroyable défi en duo : réaliser « Free Rider » en libre ! De l’année de préparation nécessaire aux tentatives d’ascensions naît une complicité de cordée intergénérationnelle assez forte. D’un côté, Mark se familiarise avec les nouvelles techniques de travail en big wall comme le repérage par le haut, et se remet en forme physiquement, admirablement coaché par Jordan. D’un autre côté le jeune passionné accède à un doux rêve de gamin : partager des moments de grimpe avec ses idoles. On appréciera les images en paroi qui mettent particulièrement en exergue la haute technicité de l’entreprise, notamment dans la longueur clé « Teflon Corner » qui semble proposer une escalade en dièdre des plus pénibles. Happy end : Jordan réussira l’ascension dans la journée et Mark réalisera l’intégralité de la voie à 2 mouvements près. Mais au-delà des performances le film met en avant l’amitié entre les deux hommes et la singularité d’une expérience incroyable sur le big wall le plus célèbre du monde. 

Pretty Strong – Fernanda

« Pretty Strong » est un documentaire dédiée à l’escalade féminine, dirigé par l’américaine Colette McInerney. On nous présente ici le chapitre du long-métrage dédié à la grimpeuse mexicaine Fernanda Rodriguez. En plus de voir un moment de grimpe partagé entre filles avec notamment Daila Ojeda, on en profite pour faire du repérage en se délectant des superbes ambiances des spots de grimpe autour de Monterrey (nord-est du Mexique) notamment El Salto. Animée par une incroyable ténacité et une combativité impressionnante, Fernanda finit par clipper le relais de son projet du moment « Andrada’s project » 8b+. A muerte spirit !

Climbing Blind

Climbing Blind nous embarque pour 45 minutes dans la vie de Jesse Dufton, grimpeur anglais. Mal-voyant de naissance, Jesse pratique l’escalade depuis son enfance et malgré un déclin quasi totale de sa vue, on découvre comment Jesse continue de pratiquer sa passion et pas à moitié : en bon grimpeur anglais, il pratique l’escalade en terrain d’aventure. Il envoie le roast-beef en trad et en tête le bonhomme ! Au fur et à mesure du film, on découvre comme cela est possible et en particulier la force de la relation de confiance que Jesse et sa femme ont développée au cours d’années d’aventures communes. Le point d’orge du film est l’ascension de l’éperon rocheux Old Man of Hoy sur la côte écossaise. Les prises de vue sont magnifiques et viennent sublimer cette très belle histoire. Spoiler, on a presque plus peur en regardant la marche d’approche que l’ascension elle-même !

Due to the pandemic, the Banff Festival is in 100% VOD format in 2021. The positive side of it is that the organization has created a 100% climbing program (“The green program”) with 4 climbing movies for even more vertical adventures!

Ten thousand bolts

This 20-minute documentary directed by the Americans Duncan Sullivan, Alex Levin & Ashley Benzwie is devoted to Toni Arbones, main bolter and emblematic local of Siurana, one of the famous climbing place in Catalonia, Spain. In parallel with his portrait, Tony explains the history of the place with the first sports route in the 90s and the horrible track which use to go to the village due to the presence of a former Nazi dignitary in the village. The potential of the Siurana‘s cliffs is huge and it is an incredible playground for Toni who is bolting between 25 and 100 routes per year and has a thousand routes to his credit. This open-minded bolting bulimic is at the origin of the fame of the village, which now has 1,700 routes. He is a true enthusiast, almost hyper active and a bit eccentric guy who seems to have the development of climbing in his blood. Although the film is quite nice, we would have enjoyed more cultural and personal content on Toni’s equipment techniques, his favorite routes, his ethical positions as on the hold chipping. “Ten thousand bolts” remains a nice look around of the place.

Free as can be

Mark Hudon 63 years old, is one of the pioneers of Yosemite and took part of the development of the free climbing in the 1970s. Almost 40 years after his feats in the valley, Mark and the young Jordan Cannon decide to climb together in order to try an incredible challenge: free climbing “Free Rider” ! From the year of preparation to the several attempts, the roped party built a fairly strong intergenerational affinity. On the one hand, Mark was familiarizing himself with new big wall techniques such as spotting the route from above, and was getting back in shape , admirably coached by Jordan. On the other hand, the young enthusiast was living a sweet childhood dream: sharing moments of climbing with his idols. We appreciate the images on the wall which particularly highlight the high technicality of the route, especially in the dihedral of “Teflon Corner”. Happy end: Jordan will sent the route in one day and Mark will complete the entire route expected from 2 moves. But beyond the performances, the film highlights the friendship between the two men and the singularity of an incredible experience on the most famous big wall in the world.

Pretty Strong – Fernanda

“Pretty Strong” is a serie of documentary movied dedicated to female climbing and directed by American Colette McInerney. The present episode focuses on tje Mexican climber Fernanda Rodriguez. In addition to capturing a moment of climbing shared between female climber as Daila Ojeda, the movie gives us the opportunity to enjoy the superb atmospheres of the climbing spots around Monterrey including El Salto. Driven by incredible tenacity and impressive combativeness, Fernanda manage to send her current project “Andrada’s project” 8b +. A muerte spirit!

Climbing Blind

Climbing Blind takes us during 45 minutes into the life of Jesse Dufton, an English climber. Visually impaired from birth, Jesse has been climbing since his childhood and despite an almost total decline in his eyesight, we discover how Jesse continues to practice his passion and not by halves: as a good English climber, he likes to lead rock trad climbing ! As the film progresses, we discover how this is possible and in particular the strength of the relationship of trust that Jesse and his wife have developed during the year of joint adventure. The point of the film is the ascent of the Old Man of Hoy rocky outcrop on the Scottish coast. The shots are magnificent and come to sublimate this very beautiful story. Spoiler, we were almost more scared watching the approach step than the climb itself.

Alex Megos n’a pas mis fin à sa parenthèse falaise de début de printemps avec son prolifique séjour à St-Léger. Le grimpeur allemand s’est rendu à Margalef il y a quelques semaines où il réalisé la seconde ascension de “Mejorando Imagen” dans le gros dévers central de La Finestra. La première ascension de cette voie très raide sur monos et bidoigts équipée par Iker Pou avait été réalisée par Ramon Julian en 2013 (en juillet !) après 3 jours de travail et proposée 9a. Située un peu plus à gauche que l’extrême “Perfecto Mundo”, “Mejorando Imagen” est une directe de départ du 9a classique de “Victima Perez” avec une difficulté assez concentrée sur 20 mètres de haut avant un mur final plus facile.
Après avoir été très proche lors de son 3ème jour de travail dans la voie, tombant dans le dernier mouvement dur de la voie, Alex a ensuite déchanté et est retombé dans le pas de bloc principal de la voie, un jeté sur un mono. C’est finalement le dernier jour sur place qu’Alex réussit la ligne à son 6ème essai de la journée, les doigts ensanglantés, en allant chercher les paires ! “Parfois, je ne comprends rien à l’escalade et au mental” conclut le grimpeur pro allemand. Pour cette dernière, Alex propose 9b et est curieux de voir ce que diront les prochains répétiteurs.

Alex Megos did not put an end to his early spring break with his prolific trip in St-Léger. The German climber went to Margalef a few weeks ago where he made the second ascent of “Mejorando Imagen” in the big central overhang of La Finestra. The first ascent of this very steep route on monos and two finger pockets, bolted by Iker Pou, was done by Ramon Julian in 2013 (in July!) after 3 days of work and proposed at 9a. Located a little more to the left of the famous “Perfecto Mundo”, “Mejorando Imagen” is a direct start of the classic 9a “Victima Perez” with a fairly concentrated difficulty over 20 meters high before an easier finish.
After coming close on his 3rd day, falling on the very last hard move of the route, Alex then failed on the main boulder crux, a jump to a mono. It was finally on his last day in Spain that Alex sent the line. On his 6th try of the day, with bloody fingers, the sending go was meant for cleaning the draws! “Sometimes I don’t understand anything about climbing and the mind” concluded the pro German climber. For the grade, Alex suggests an upgrade to 9b and is curious to see what the next repeaters will make of it.

Troisième ascension de “Mejorando Imagen” à Raco de la Finestra, Margalef, par le mutant espagnol Jorge Diaz-Rullo ! Cette voie équipée par Iker Pou et libérée par Ramon Julian était restée non-répétée pendant 8 ans. Elle a été remise sous le feu des projecteurs le mois dernier par Alex Megos, avec une réévaluation à 9b.
Sur son compte Instagram, Jorge explique qu’il a cru faire vite la croix, mais après être tombé les doigts en sang au dernier mouvement dur au 5ème jour, il a eu besoin au final de 8 jours de travail pour répéter cette voie explosive et traumatisante sur mono et bidoigts. Il propose 9a+/b comme niveau, tout en annonçant que c’est sa voie la plus dure réalisée sans genouillère !

Third ascent of “Mejorando Imagen” in Raco de la Finestra, Margalef by Spanish beast Jorge Diaz-Rullo! This route, bolted by Iker Pou, was first ascended by Ramon Julian and remained unrepeated for 8 years. It was put under the spotlight last month with the second ascent by Alex Megos, and an upgrade to 9b.
On his Instagram account, Jorge explains that he was thinking he’d repeat the route quickly after his first tries, but due to falling on the last move of the route on his 5th day with bloody fingers, in the end this sharp and painful route on mono and twofinger pockets took him 8 days. Jorge proposes 9a+/b as a grade, announcing it is his hardest send without a kneepad!

Shrouded in mystery and conquered only by a select few, “Orbayu Free Again” centres around “Orbayu” (8c) in the Picos de Europa, Cantabria and follows Siebe Vanhee as he loses skin and sleep in his pursuit to become only the seventh person to master this 500m Spanish beast, with a rare and superhuman one-day ascent. Enjoy it!

Profitant d’un temps exceptionnellement venté pour la saison, le talentueux grimpeur belge Seb Berthe vient de réaliser la seconde ascension de la grande-voie extrême de Montserrat (Catalogne) “Arco Iris” 8c+, 200m. Libéré par Edu Marin en octobre dernier, le challenge propose 5 longueurs soutenues (6c, 8b+, 8c+, 8b, 8a+) avec des plombs monstrueux supérieurs à 20 mètres en cas de chute. Voici le ressenti de Seb.

“Arco Iris” est mon plus gros accomplissement en grande voie. Cette ancienne voie d’artif est relativement soutenue et incroyable : elle remonte une proue déversante sur 5 longueurs. Edu a rééquipé la voie avec des points très espacés de manière à ce que tenter la voie en libre ne gêne pas le fait de la grimper en artif, ce qui ne pose pas de problèmes ici à Montserrat. J’ai pris le plus gros plomb de ma vie dans cette voie, environ 25 mètres en essayant la longueur en 8c+. Cela rend les choses vraiment difficiles à gérer mentalement, mais je pense que je m’en suis bien sorti ! Malgré quelques parties avec du rocher fragile, les prises sont magnifiques et l’escalade superbe et bien rési ! Concernant le processus, j’ai découvert le mur et la voie ce printemps quand j’ai réalisé “Tarrago” à la journée (la voie des frères Pou juste à droite qui partage certaines parties avec celle-ci). Quand je suis allé dans “Arco Iris” je l’ai trouvé bien plus dure… C’était la première de ma vie que j’ai eu autant de difficultés en essayant une grande voie le premier jour. J’ai pu enchaîner la longueur en 8b+ mais la longueur clé en 8c+ était vraiment dure à appréhender physiquement, techniquement et mentalement, terriblement rési. J’ai dû quitter l’Espagne sans la croix.
Cet été, je devais retourner en Espagne pour préparer un gros projet pour l’année prochaine, et j’étais assez proche de Montserrat. Malgré la chaleur j’y suis retourné et j’y ai trouvé de relativement bonnes conditions grâce au vent. Le 2ème jour dans la voie, je me suis fait botté les fesses une seconde fois mais j’ai compris que je pouvais faire cette voie en grimpant parfaitement bien. A mon 3ème jour dans la voie, je me suis senti de mieux en mieux dans la longueur clé et j’avais des méthodes parfaites. J’ai mis un essai parfait dans le 8c+ et je suis tombé complètement pété à quelques mouvements du relais ! Je me suis senti confiant et heureux : je savais que je pouvais le faire.

A la fin de la journée, j’étais en train de bosser des sections de cette longueur clé quand j’ai cassé une prise clé dans la partie finale, enlevant le seul repos possible dans cette section, rendant encore plus dure cette longueur… Les doutes sont rapidement revenus. Dimanche était mon 4ème jour de travail dans la voie, et je n’étais pas sûr de mes chances. Peu importe, j’ai mis un essai “a muerte” avec mon pote belge Baptiste Verdin en guise de compagnon de cordée. J’ai réalisé la première longueur relativement facilement par rapport aux autres fois. Pour mon premier essai dans le 8c+, je suis tombé là où j’ai cassé la prise la session précédente. J’ai retravaillé mes méthodes un petit peu et j’ai pris 2 heures de repos. À mon deuxième essai, j’ai très bien grimpé mais je me suis senti de plus en plus fatigué au fur et à mesure que j’avançais. J’ai atteint l’endroit où j’étais tombé précédemment et j’ai crié fort en faisant le mouvement. J’étais vraiment à la limite. Pendant les 10 derniers mètres, j’ai bataillé à chacun des mouvements, probablement une des plus gros combat de ma vie ! Les deux dernières longueurs, j’ai donné le meilleur. Malgré les bouteilles je les ai enchaînées directement. Après plus de 9 heures dans la voie nous étions en haut du mur. J’étais vraiment heureux et euphorique. J’ai mis en tout 4 jours pour réussir la voie, en réalisant en tête chaque longueur, et j’ai mis beaucoup de concentration mentale et d’énergie pour relever le défi qu’offre cette voie. Merci à Edu pour tout ce travail sur cette voie !
Concernant les cotations, de mon point de vue, la longueur clé est un vrai 8c+ (encore plus depuis que j’y ai cassé une prise), mais j’ai trouvé les autres longueurs plus faciles que ce qu’annonçait Edu. Je dirai 8b au lieu de 8b+ pour la L2, 8a+ au lieu de 8b pour la L4 et 8a au lieu de 8a+ pour la dernière longueur. Voyons ce qu’en penseront les grimpeurs suivants…

Taking advantage of exceptionally windy weather for the season, the talented Belgian climber Seb Berthe has just completed the second ascent of the extreme multi-pitch Montserrat (Catalonia) “Arco Iris” 8c+, 200m. Freed by Edu Marin last October, the challenge offers 5 sustained pitches (6c, 8b+, 8c +, 8b, 8a+) with potential falls up to 20 meters.

“Arco Iris” is my hardest achievement in multipitch climbing for sure. This ancient aid route is really sustained and incredible: it follows an overhanging corner for 5 pitches (6c, 8b+, 8c+, 8b, 8a+). Edu rebolted the line with huge runouts so the freeclimb does not bother the aid, which is really important there in Montserrat. I took the longest whipper of my life, about 25m, trying hard on the 8c+… This makes it really hard for the mental, but I think he did a great job there! Despite some loosy rock, the holds are crazy and the climbing is great and so pumpy! About the process, I discovered that wall and the route in spring when I climbed “Tarrago” in a day (The route from the Pou brothers just on the right that shares some parts). Then I went for “Arco Iris”, and it felt so much harder… This was the first time in my life I had so much troubles in a multipitch on my first day: I could send the first 8b+ pitch but the crux pitch felt desperatly hard physically, technically and mentally, and sooo pumpy. I had to leave Spain with this route undone…

This summer, I had to come back to Spain to prepare a big project for next year, and was staying pretty close from Montserrat. Despite the warm conditions, I had to go again and I actually discovered pretty good conditions (quite windy) On the 2nd day on the route, I got my ass kicked a second time but found out that I could send this beast with perfect climbing from myself. On my 3rd day on the route, I felt better and better on the pitch, and had my betas perfectly. I gave a perfect go on the 8c+ and fell completely pumped few moves from the anchor! I was so happy and psyched: I knew I could do it.

At the end of the day, as I was working on some sections of the crux pitch, I broke a key hold of final part and it took off the only rest there. I think it makes the pitch significantly harder… Doubts came back. Sunday was my fourth day working the route, and I was’nt sure I had a chance this day. Anyway, I went “a muerte” with my belgian friend Baptiste Verdin as belayer and partner. I sent the first pitch pretty easily compared to the previous times. On my first go on the 8c+, I fell where I broke the holds the last time. I worked on the beta a bit more and took 2 hours of rest. On my second try, I climbed really well but felt more and more tired while progressing on the route. I reached the point where I fell before and shout loudly while doing the move. I really was at the limit. During the last 10m, I fought hard at every move, probably one of the biggest fight of my life! On the two following pitches, I gave my best. Despite the pump I sent them directly. After about 9 hours on the route we were on the top of the wall I was so psyched and happy about it! In total, I spent 4 days to send the route (leading every pitches) and put quite a lot of mental focus and energy to overcome the challenge that the route offers. Thanks to Edu for the work on this route! About the grades, in my opinion, the crux pitch felt well and truly 8c+ (even more after I broke the hold), but the other pitches might be a bit easier than what Edu said: I would say 8b instead of 8b+ for the second pitch, 8a+ Instead of 8b for the fourth pitch and 8a instead of 8a+ for the last pitch. Let’s see what the following climbers will think about it…

De retour aux affaires après une blessure au doigt, la top grimpeuse Belge Anak Verhoeven revient d’un séjour en Catalogne où elle a réalisé la seconde ascension connue de la voie “Patxichulo” 9a/+ à Oliana. Cette connexion pensée et libérée en 2017 par Patxi Usobiaga démarre dans le 8c+ classique de “Joe Blau” avant de connecter sous le crux de “Papichulo” et de finir dans ce dernier. Agée de 25 ans, Anak rajoute une croix de plus à son carnet de voies dures déjà bien rempli, elle qui avait déjà réalisé à Oliana “Joe mama” (9a+), ou encore d’autres voies extrêmes comme “Sweet neuf” (9a+) ou “Ciudad de dios” (9a/+).

It’s back to business for top Belgian climber Anak Verhoeven who, after a finger injury, has just come back from a trip in Catalunya where she claimed the second known ascent of “Patxichulo” 9a/+ at Oliana. This link was freed in 2017 by Patxi Usobiaga. The route starts with the classic “Joe Blau” (8c+) and continues in the crux and the finish of “Papichulo” (9a+). The 25-year old star adds one more route to her ticklist of extreme routes. Last year, she also sent “Joe mama” (9a+) and other difficult sport climbs like “Sweet neuf” (9a+) or “Ciudad de dios (9a/+).

L’article Anak Verhoeven réalise la seconde ascension de Patxichulo 9a/+ – Anak Verhoeven claims the second ascent of Patxichulo 9a/+ est apparu en premier sur Fanatic Climbing.

Depuis quelques jours, Rodellar, la mecque de la Sierra de Guarra, est visitée par une équipe slovène de compétiteurs (Lukan, Skofic, Krampl…), avec de belles performances à la clé !

Vita Lukan, 21 ans, en profite pour frapper fort et réaliser la classique de la Gran Boveda, “Geminis” 8b+ à vue ! Cette King line très athlétique de 40 mètres au milieu de la baume déversante offre un marathon de conti sur trous et colos.

Elle déclare sur son compte Instagram :
“Cela a été un gros combat, pas uniquement contre les bouteilles mais aussi contre moi-même. C’était dur de rester calme dans la partie sommitale de la king line, là où mon mental commençait à flancher. J’ai toujours eu un rapport amour-haine avec ces longues voies déversantes de Rodellar. Et je ne suis pas habituée à grimper avec des genouillères. On est à la moitié du trip et la motivation est grande pour la suite du séjour.”

Avec cette belle croix, Vita rentre dans le club très fermé des femmes ayant réalisé du 8b+ à vue : Katie Brown (“Omaha Beach”), Josune Bereziartu (“Hidrofobia”), Charlotte Durif (“Les rois du pétrole”), Maja Vidmar (“Humildes pa casa”), Sacha DiGiulian (“Omaha Beach”), Kajsa Rosén (“T1 full-equip”), Laura Rogora (“L-mens”) Anak Verhoeven (“Gorillas en la niebla”) et Martina Demmel (“Humildes pa casa”).

Un peu plus bas sur la colline, Domen Skofic s’est adjugé une répétition de la combinaison “Ali Hulk extension total sit start” 9b dans la grotte d’Ali Baba, qu’il a réalisé sans genouillères pour son premier 9b.

“La dernière fois que je suis venu à Rodellar j’ai visité tous les secteurs sauf la grotte d’Ali Baba car je pensais que ça ne valait pas vraiment le coup d’y grimper. Cette fois-ci je voulais connaître l’endroit et au contraire j’ai trouvé la grotte très cool et j’étais très motivé à l’idée d’essayer les movements. Comme je savais que ma forme n’était pas au top, je n’attendais rien de spécial et j’ai juste joué dans la voie. Après 3 jours de travail j’ai assemblé ensemble tous les morceaux et je l’ai réalisé à mon premier vrai essai. Je ne pensais pas que cela irait aussi vite et du coup je suis un peu sceptique sur la cotation. 9b ou pas c’était sympa de reconstituer ce puzzle et de me motiver encore plus pour mes objectifs futurs.”

In the last few days, Rodellar, the climbing mecca from Sierra de Guarra is being visited by a team of strong Slovenian competitors (Lukan, Skofic, Krampl…), with some nice sends to boot!

Vita Lukan, 21, has struk and onsighted the classical king line of Gran Boveda, “Geminis” 8b+! This overhanging 40-meter line offers a stamina challenge on tufas and pockets. Vita described her send on Instagram :

“It was a huge fight not just against the pump but also against myself – it was hard to stay calm in the upper part of 40m long kingline where mind started playing tricks with me. Still have some kind of love-hate relationship with these long and overhanging routes in Rodellar…and I still haven’t gotten used to climb with knee bars.
Halfway through our trip and psyche for the rest is high.”

Vita now belongs in the very private club of women who have onsighted 8b+: Katie Brown (“Omaha Beach”), Josune Bereziartu (“Hidrofobia”), Charlotte Durif (“Les rois du pétrole”), Maja Vidmar (Humildes pa casa”), Sacha DiGiulian (“Omaha Beach”), Kajsa Rosén (“T1 full-equip”), Laura Rogora (“L-mens”), Anak Verhoeven (“Gorillas en la niebla”) and Martina Demmel (“Humildes pa casa”).

Meanwhile, a little further down the hill, Domen Skofic has repeated “Ali Hulk extension total sit start” 9b, located in Ali Baba cave, without kneepads.

“The last time I visited almost all the sectors except Ali Baba cave because I thought it’s not worth to climb there.
This time I said I will at least check the place before I judge and on the contrary I found the cave really cool and I got extremely psyched to try the moves. As I thought my shape is not the best I didn’t expect anything and I just played on the moves. After 3 days of work I brought all the pieces together and today I sent it on my first try.
I didn’t expect it’s going to happen that fast and therefore I’m a little bit skeptical about the grade.
9b or not it felt great building this puzzle together and made me even more motivated for my future goals.“

Le champion autrichien Jakob Schubert vient de passer des vacances à Majorque où il s’est adonné au Pscicobloc. Bien lui en pris puisque la semaine passée, Jakob a réussi la seconde ascension d’ “Alasha” (8c+/9a, crux sommital autour du 8B bloc) à Port de Soller, une lignée établie par le King Chris Sharma. Ensuite Jakob s’est naturellement tourné vers la célèbre arche d’Es Pontas à Santanyi, souvent essayée mais assez peu répétée. Depuis l’ouverture de Chris Sharma en 2007, seuls Jernej Kruder et Jan Hojer ont réussi à répéter la King line, célèbre pour son impressionnant jeté . “J’ai réalisé le jeté et je ne suis plus tombé ! commente Jakob sur son compte Instagram, qui empoche donc la 4ème ascension. Voici son retour sur son trip dans ce vlog avant la vidéo de sa répétition un peu plus tard… En un seul trip ici, Jakob aura répété les deux voies les plus dures de l’île et peut-être du monde en deep water ! Austrian champion Jakob Schubert has just spent an holiday trip in Mallorca where he practiced pscicobloc. Things went fast: last week, Jakob managed the second ascent of “Alasha” (8c+/ 9a, topcrux around 8B boulder) at Port de Soller, a line established by King Chris Sharma. Then Jakob naturally went to the famous arch of Es Pontas in Santanyi, often tried but not often repeated. Since Chris Sharma’s first ascent in 2007, only Jernej Kruder and Jan Hojer have managed to repeat the King line, famous for his impressive dyno. “I stuck the dyno and didn‘t let go anymore!” comments Jakob on his Instagram account, grabbing the 4th ascent. Here is his feedback on his trip in this vlog, waiting for the video of his repeat of Es Pontas a little bit later… In just one trip here, Jakob will have climbed the two hardest routes of the island and may be of the World in deep water! Déjà très actif il y a quelques années du côté de Santa Linya, Tom écume depuis plusieurs années aussi Margalef, répétant des voies dures et équipant aussi des trucs particulièrement extrêmes. Dans la video qui suit, en plus de travailler la Kingline “Perfecto Mundo”, Tom présente une nouvelle ligne voisine équipée par ses soins à Raco de La Finestra à la difficulté inouïe , un projet ultime qui pourrait rivaliser avec l’effort de “Perfecto Mundo” selon ses dires… Après une première partie autour du 9a/+ (“The Jouney”), Tom doit se frapper un pas de bloc sommital extrême qu’il ne semble pas parvenir encore à faire, alors que quand il essaie le crux de “Perfecto Mundo” estimé aux alentours du 8A bloc il y arrive quasi systématiquement… A continuer…Attention, doigts fragiles s’abstenir !

Il n’y a pas que Tom Bolger qui a des projets extrêmes actuellement au secteur Finestra de Margalef ! Le fort falaisiste espagnol Jorge Diaz-Rullo essaie depuis ce début d’été un nouveau projet futuriste, “Cafe Columbia”, une ligne équipée par le colombien Anghelo Bernal Quintero en juin dans l’impressionnant dévers du cirque. Aujourd’hui Jorge vient de réaliser la première ascension de “Cafe Solo”, la première partie du projet qui s’échappe ensuite dans le “facile” sur la gauche avant le pas de bloc sommital du projet principal.

Jorge décrit la voie de la sorte :
“Les 3 premières dégaines ne sont pas très dures, mais tu dois rester en tension pour le premier pas de bloc. Un clippage dur puis un crux avec un jeté assez précis de bidoigt à bidoigt, puis 4 autres mouvements pour finir le pas de bloc, un dernier mouvement dynamique, où si tu tombes tu vas par terre car clipper les deux dégaines autour est impossible pour moi. Cela revient à faire un 8c+/9a très court et explosif de 15 mouvements. Ensuite un autre pas de bloc arrive, autour du 8A+ bloc, 6 mouvements sur des petits bidoigts de nouveau qui demandent beaucoup de gainage avec deux mouvements aléatoires qui rendent l’affaire très corsée quand tu arrives dans l’enchainement. S’ajoutent encore 6 mouvements moins durs et qui donnent une petite note rési jusqu’à un repos sur une petite arquée où tu peux délayer pas plus de 3 fois chaque main.”

C’est là que la fin plus facile, “Cafe Solo”, 9b peut être empruntée. Il restera à Jorge de se frapper le pas de bloc sommital pour s’offrir “Cafe Columbia” :
” Après ce repos, il reste une grosse section bloc de 3 dégaines, environ 8A+/B bloc où tu peux tomber à chaque mouvement avec le mouvement le plus difficile qui est au milieu, où tu vas d’une arquée en épaule à une autre avec des pieds loin et mauvais. Il faudra arriver frais au repos pour avoir une chance”.

Après “FRFM”, “Perfecto Mundo” et “Artaburu”, “Mejorando imagen”, “Cafe Solo” se glisse dans les propositions les plus extrêmes de la Mecque catalane. Et “Cafe columbia” sûrement un des projets les plus futuristes au Monde ! Un aperçu dans la vidéo ci-dessous.

Tom Bolger is not the only one to try hard in Raco de La Finestra, Margalef! The strong Spanish rockclimber Jorge Diaz-Rullo is trying since the early summer a futuristic project called “Cafe Columbia”, a line bolted last June by Colombian Anghelo Bernal Quintero in the massive overhang of the crag. Today Jorge freed “Cafe Solo” which is the first part of the project skipping the top boulder of the main project for an easier left finish.
Jorge describes the line:

“The first three quickdraws are not very hard but they put you in a tense position for the first boulder. A hard clip and immediately after starts a crux with a very precise dynamic move from one two finger pocket to another, then continue for another 4 hard moves to finish the boulder, and then one last dynamic move, in which if you fall you go to the ground because clipping the two previous quickdraws isnt possible for me.

From what I’ve described, I thought this might be a short and explosive 15 move 8c+/9a. Next, another boulder continues around the 8A+ grade with 6 moves on very short two finger pockets, which requires a lot of body tension, with two very low percentage moves that make it much more difficult from the ground…

After this, there are 6 moves that are not so hard but require endurance, just before reaching the “rest” of the route, a very small crimp where I have to count 3 hand shakes each to manage a little bit of a “rest” before continuing…

That’s at this point you can turn left in an easier finish for climbing “Cafe Solo”. It still stayed to link with the buisiness, the main crux of “Cafe Columbia project” :

“From this “rest” to the end, I think the hardest thing is missing, a long boulder of three quickdraws about 8A+/B aprox boulder, in which at each move you can fall, but specifically with a crux in the middle of pulling from one shoulder crimp to another, with bad and far feet. It’s important to arrive perfect to be able to do it.”

After “FRFM”, “Perfecto Mundo”, “Artaburu”, “Mejorando Imagen”, “Cafe Solo” is one of the hardest proposition of Catalan’s mecca. And “Cafe Columbia” for sure one of the hardest sportclimbing project of the World! Have a look in the video above.

Incroyable performance à la falaise d’Oliana en Catalogne, où la mutante slovène Janja Garnbret vient de réaliser la classique de continuité de 50 mètres “Fish Eye” 8c à vue ! Et cela tombe bien, car nous étions sur place et nous avons pu profiter du spectacle !

Pourtant la championne olympique n’était pas en réussite depuis le début de son séjour catalan… La veille, pour sa première journée sur place, Janja a subi des échecs cuisants à vue dans “Humildes pa casa” et “Gorilas en la Niebla”, toutes deux 8b+, en tombant bien bas dans ses tentatives. Ce midi, pour son 2ème jour, Janja retombe encore en fin d’échauffement dans “Humildes pa casa”, déclarant manquer de volume. Un bon repos plus tard la voilà remobilisée pour tenter “Fish Eye”.

La première partie de la voie, un 8a+ athlétique, ne sera qu’une formalité, et c’est fraîche que Janja exécute le premier pas de bloc du milieu de voie, gravi parfaitement, sans erreur de lecture et avec pile la bonne intensité. Quelques délayages plus tard et la voici déjà dans la partie haute plus conti de la voie, à presque 40 mètres de haut juste sous le pas de bloc à doigts qui en aura fait tomber plus d’un. C’est d’ailleurs la forme de la prise de ce crux, un bidoigt évasé et rond, qui donne son nom à la voie.

Après une hésitation dans le pas où Janja, à l’envers, s’est payée le luxe de revenir quelques secondes au semi-repos précédent, la slovène franchit cette dernière difficulté sous les encouragements et s’en va clipper le relais ! D’une impressionnante facilité, elle avouera quand même avoir pris les bouteilles !

Abordable à vue car dans la filière continuité mais jamais remise en question malgré les (très) nombreux ascensionnistes, “Fish Eye”, équipée et libérée par Chris Sharma en 2009 nous semble une référence dans le niveau. Il pourrait donc s’agir du premier 8c à vue féminin de l’histoire, puisqu’avant Charlotte Durif avait annoncé “Les rois du pétrole” en 2010, voie désormais décotée à 8b+. 10 femmes avaient jusqu’alors réalisé du 8b+ à vue : Katie Brown (“Omaha Beach”), Josune Bereziartu (“Hidrofobia”), Charlotte Durif (“Les rois du pétrole”), Maja Vidmar (“Humildes pa casa”), Sacha DiGiulian (“Omaha Beach”), Kajsa Rosén (“T1 full-equip”), Laura Rogora (“L-mens”), Anak Verhoeven (“Gorillas en la niebla”), Martina Demmel (“Humildes pa casa”) et Vita Lukan (“Geminis”), mais personne n’avait réalisé un 8c.

Il y a quelques années, la championne Slovène avait déjà réalisé de belles croix à Santa Linya avec “Rollito Sharma extension” et “La Fabelita” 8c flash mais n’avait jamais réalisé ce niveau à vue. Janja restant encore quelques jours sur place, il se peut qu’on assiste à d’autres exploits. Comme on reste aussi, on vous tiendra bien évidemment informés !

Incredible! Two days ago in Oliana, Catalonia, Spain, Janja Garnbret has just onsighted the 50m-long endurance classic that is “Fish Eye” 8c! And as luck would have it, we were there too and relished in the Janja show!

And yet, the Slovenian Olympic champion wasn’t quite firing since getting in Catalonia… Yesterday, on her first day at the crag, Janja fared relatively badly in her onsight attempts of ‘Humildes pa casa’ and ‘Gorillas en la Nieba’, both 8b+, as she fell low down. At lunchtime today, for her second day, Janja falls again in ‘Humildes pa casa’, saying she’s short on endurance. A good rest later though, she’s got the bit between her teeth again and walks to ‘Fish eye’.

The first part of the route, a punchy 8a+, poses no problems, and when the time comes to tackle the first boulder crux in the middle of the line, Janja is perfect: she ascends flawlessly, without mistakes and just the right intensity. A few shake-outs later and she finds herself in the upper part of the route, 40 meters off the deck, just under the last, fingery, boulder, which has caused many a dispiriting heartache with this slopy twofingerpocket which inspired the name of the route.

After hesitating in the said boulder where she misreads a sequence, the Slovenian climbs back down to the half-rest below, then, helped by the cheers, finally powers through the last section and clips the chains! Despite her impressive ease, Janja admitted being failry pumped!

Feasible since the route is endurance-based, its grade has never been put in doubt by its many repeaters and “Fish Eye” (bolted and freed by Chris Sharma in 2009) seems to us to be a benchmark in that difficulty. This could therefore turn out to be the first female 8c onsight in history, since Charlotte Durif’s ‘Les rois du pétrole’ (2010), although proposed at 8c, has long since been downgraded to 8b+. 10 women have so far onsighted 8b+: Katie Brown (‘Omaha Beach’), Josune Bereziartu (‘Hidrofobia’), Charlotte Durif (‘Les rois du pétrole’), Maja Vidmar (‘Humildes pa casa’), Sacha DiGiulian (‘Omaha Beach’), Kajsa Rosén (‘T1 full-equip’), Laura Rogora (‘L-mens’) Anak Verhoeven (‘Gorillas en la niebla’), Martina Demmel (‘Humildes pa casa’) and Vita Lukan (‘Geminis’). But no woman had done so at 8c.

Some years ago, Slovenian champion flashed some 8c’s in Santa Linya with “Rollito Sharma extension” and “La Fabelita” but never onsighted 8c. As Janja is set to be here for another few days, it is possible some more feats are on the cards. Since we’re staying too, we will keep you updated if and when!

Deux jours après avoir réalisé “Fish Eye” à vue, news que nous vous relations cet après-midi, nous avons été témoins d’un autre exploit de la part de la championne olympique Janja Garnbret à Oliana aujourd’hui. En forme olympique, Janja réalise cette fois le 8c “American Hustle” à vue, au prix d’un gros combat ! En guise d’échauffement, Janja était allée visiter le bas de “La Dura dura” le 9b+ mythique de la falaise et s’est payée le luxe de faire le fameux crux avec le jeté explosif vers un bidoigt fuyant en épaule !

Après cette fin d’échauffement plutôt bloc, la championne slovène se rabat sur nos conseils sur “American Hustle” 8c de conti de 50 mètres équipé par Sam Elias en 2014 en plein milieu du mur central de la falaise, juste à gauche de “Fish Eye”.

La voie se décompose en un 8a+ d’approche à doigts puis physique, avant un semi-repos sur une écaille et une section très résistante d’une quinzaine de mouvements au milieu qui constitue le crux. Elle se finit par une section plus conti de 20 mètres, environ 8a/+, qui alterne pas de blocs bien toniques avec des mouvements à prise de risques et bonnes décontractions. Après un bon combat dans la section du milieu, grimpant sans faire d’erreurs majeures de lecture et ayant la marge de délayer partout, Janja a eu une hésitation ensuite sur un mouvement puissant sur inversées nécessitant de l’engagement. Mais une fois cette difficulté passée, elle s’est hissée sans encombre vers le relais pour réaliser son 2ème 8c à vue du séjour ! Nous avons filmé une partie du run du sol, et il reste encore un jour de grimpe à Janja, d’autres infos à venir bientôt !

Two days after her onsight of “Fish Eye”, we witnessed another feat by Olympic Gold Medalist Janja Garnbret in Oliana today. Janja was at it again and sent “American Hustle” 8c onsight after a huge fight!
To finish her warm-up, Janja visited the lower part of mythical “La Dura dura” 9b+ and managed to stick the dyno to the 2-finger gaston! Crazy!

After this somewhat bouldery end to her warm-up, the Slovenian champion decided to try “American Hustle”, a 50-meter stamina 8c bolted by Sam Elias in 2014, in the center of the crag.

The route could be described as a fingery then pumpy 8a+ start before a little rest on a flake, leading to a physical resistance section in the middle by way of crux. Then comes the stamina 8a+ finish with some powerful and risky moves, separated by good rests.

After a good fight in the middle, climbing without mistakes and being able to shake out on every move, Janja hesitated at the deadpoint move on underclings. But once she climbed this section, Janja looked comfortable in the crimpy finish to the anchor and bagged her second 8c onsight of the trip! We filmed most of her fight from the ground (soon to be uploaded to our Youtube channel) and don’t forget, Janja still has one climbing day here, so more to come soon we hope!

Une King Line de plus dans la besace de Mathieu Bouyoud ! En effet, l’expérimenté falaisiste chambérien a coché hier lors d’un combat titanesque une des voies majeures de la falaise d’Oliana, “Papichulo” 9a+. Mathieu a fait jouer toute sa science de la grimpe pour faire un run qui se rapproche de la perfection, et c’est une rare fois où nous avons entendu Mathieu crier dans une voie d’escalade, lui qui nous a habitué à dérouler les voies dures presque en sifflotant !

“Papichulo” remonte le mur central d’Oliana sur près de 50 mètres dans des coulées bleues sculptées, à coup sûr une des voies les plus belles d’Europe dans ce niveau, souvent associée par les grimpeurs forts à “La Rambla” et “Biographie” pour constituer une trilogie de rêve de voies sportives majeures. Après un départ très bloc environ 8b/+ et un repos total sur une vire où on peut s’asseoir, les hostilités commencent avec 15 mètres de 8c/+ très résistants jusqu’à un semi-repos, avant un pas de bloc constitué d’un derviche et d’un mouvement dynamique difficile à négocier car demandant de la précision et un travail chirurgical de préhensions (environ 7A bloc). S’en suit une boucle résistante puis un final conti qui alterne pas de bloc et repos, où il ne vaut mieux pas mollir…

“Ma première montée dans “Papichulo” remonte à juin 2019 juste après avoir enchaîné “Esclatamasters”. J’ai ensuite réalisé 10 jours en novembre 2019, une semaine fin décembre et 10 jours en février 2020, où j’étais assez proche, tombant dans la boucle. Malheureusement l’épidémie de Covid ne m’a pas permis de terminer ce chantier immédiatement, alors j’ai collé une photo de la falaise sur mon frigo histoire de me remémorer chaque jour ce projet et entretenir ma motivation ! Juste de reparler de ce projet avec Axel Ballay me redonnait envie de revenir finir le travail. “Papichulo” est un des plus beaux 9a+ à faire, l’endroit est incroyable, le bombé bleu est parfait. Une voie qui me convient bien, à doigts et continue. J’ai sorti le run parfait pour dompter la bête.”

Au 3ème jour de travail cette semaine et au 4ème séjour, Mathieu réussit donc son rêve du moment et coche son 2ème 9a+ de l’année après sa proposition à La Balme en septembre dernier, “Team Frisouille”. Comme le signale Toni Mas Buchaca, photographe local non-grimpeur de Peramola mais passionné par la falaise, cela faisait quelque temps que personne n’avait clippé le relais. Le dernier était David Firnenburg en janvier 2020. Mathieu signe la 24ème ascension de cette voie mythique, son 3ème 9a+ et sa 25ème voie en 9ème degré. Une année 2021 pleine pour lui !

Another King Line under Mathieu Bouyoud’s belt! Experimented rockclimber from Chambéry, France just ticked yesterday one of the must of Oliana, “Papichulo” 9a+ after a huge fight. Mathieu has used all his climbing science to make a try close to perfection and finally clip the anchor. It’s rare to heard him screaming in a climbing route, usually used to make easy some hard stuff…

“Papichulo” is located in the center of the crag, 50 meters long in a blue scarved wall, for sure one of the best sportclimbing routes in this range in Europe! This route is often considered by pro climbers like a part of a dream sportclimbing trilogy with “La Rambla” and “Biographie”. After a bouldery 15 meters start in the 8b/+ range and a complete rest on a ledge where you can sit, the business is starting with another 15 meters of powerful and fingery 8c/+ until a little rest. Then the main difficulties arrive with a 7A boulder whith a big cross and a deadpoint move, a resistant loop and a stamina finish, where you should stay determined.

“My first check in Papichulo” was in June 2019, just after my send of “Esclatamasters”. I did a second trip in november 2019, a week for Christmas 2019 and 10 days in Fébruary 2020, where I was close, falling in the loop. Unfortunately Covid pandemia didn’t allowed me to finish this project, so I stick a postcard of the crag on my fridge as reminder, to keep the motivation high! Just have a talk about the projects with friends who where trying too like Axel Ballay gives me a lot of hope. “Papichulo” is one of the best 9a+ to climb, the place is incredible, this blue line perfect. A route which suits my style, fingery and sustained. I did the perfect try to conquer it.”

At his 3rd day back on the route , and during his 4th trip, Mathieu’s dream came true, and he climbs his second 9a+ this year. Remember he did the first ascent of “Team Frisouille” in La Balme last September. Toni Mas Bucacha, passionated local photographer from Peramola keeps our attention: it was long time the anchor of this gem have not been clipped. Last time was German David Firnenburg in January 2020. Mathieu signs here the 24th ascent of this mythical route, his 3rd 9a+ and his 25th 9th grade route. A full 2021 year for him!

Cela faisait longtemps que “Chilam Balam” n’avait pas été réalisé. Proposé à 9b+ en 2003 par Barnabé Fernandez, mais revu à 9a+/b après quelques répétitions (Ondra, Bouin Andrada, Marin,…) ce monstre de continuité qui remonte l’arche de la grotte de Villanueva Del Rosario (80 mètres de développé!) empile un 8c+ marqué par un pas d’épaule tonique avec des sections résistantes sur concrétions majeures environ 8c+ avant un pas de bloc sommital très à doigts qui constitue le crux final et ultime. Depuis 2015 seul le norvégien Sindre Saether l’avait refait en 2019 après 85 jours de travail ! Présent depuis 20 jours sur place, c’est le grimpeur Jonatan Flor qui clippe cette fois le relais. Une 2ème King line de plus à son actif, lui qui avait coché un peu plus tôt cette année la célèbre “Rambla” à Siurana. Ce n’est pas le premier séjour sur place de Jonathan, dernier répétiteur de “La Planta de Shiva” en décembre 2020. Il signe donc ici la 7ème ascension de cette voie mythique en 18 ans !

It had been a while since “Chilam Balam” was last repeated. Proposed at 9b+ in 2003 by Barnabé Fernandez, but downgraded to 9a +/b after a few repetitions (Ondra, Bouin Andrada, Marin…) this stamina testpiece following the arch of the cave of Villanueva Del Rosario (80 meters of climbing!) starts with an 8c+ and a furious boulder section, then continues with a resistant section on big tufas around 8c+ before a fingery final boulder which is the main difficulty of the King Line. Since 2015, only the Norwegian Sindre Saether has climbed it (in 2019, after 85 days of work)! In the area for the last 20 days, Jonatan Flor finally clipped the anchor yesterday. A second King line under his belt, since he has ticked the famous “Rambla” in Siurana earlier this year. This is not the first stay in Villanueva Del Rosario for Jonathan, who is the last repetitor of “La Planta de Shiva” in December 2020. He is therefore signing the 7th ascent of this mythical route in 18 years!

Suite à la réalisation à vue de “Fish Eye” et “American Hustle”, tous deux 8c, par Janja Garnbret la semaine passée à Oliana, nous sommes allés poser quelques questions à la championne olympique. En bonus sous l’interview, on vous offre la vidéo de Janja à vue dans les principales difficultés de “American Hustle”.

– Quel était l’objectif de ta venue à Oliana ?
Je voulais essayer quelques voies et voir comment je me sentais en grimpant ici et je voulais aussi voir ce que je pouvais donner à vue.

– Comment t’es venue l’idée d’essayer “Fish Eye” ?
Je ne pensais pas vraiment essayer un 8c à vue, mais plus tard ce jour là j’ai juste décidé de mettre un essai dans “Fish Eye”. Pas de pression, juste de l’escalade.

– Comment ça s’est passé pendant le à vue ? Peux-tu décrire ton escalade ?
Je me sentais super bien, relâchée et concentrée. Je n’ai pas paniqué si je ne comprenais pas à une séquence tout de suite, je me sentais bien. Je pense que j’ai grimpé assez vite, et cela était assez approprié. J’ai pris du temps dans la dalle finale car il n’y avait pas trop de magnésie et je ne voulais vraiment pas me la coller.

– Tu étais pétée ? Quand as-tu compris que tu pouvais la faire ?
Dans la première partie difficile je n’étais pas si pétée. Jusqu’au dernier bac de la partie déversante j’ai grimpé très vite, je me suis reposée là où j’ai pu et à cette prise-là, j’ai compris que je pouvais la faire. Mais la dernière partie était assez piégeuse donc j’aurais pu tomber partout, j’ai réussi à rester calme et à trouver les séquences.

– Avais-tu essayé de réaliser un 8c à vue avant ? Tu penses comme moi que tes limites sont plus loin ?
Je n’ai jamais essayé de réaliser un 8c à vue, avant j’avais fait des essais flashs dans les 8c, ou alors j’avais dû les travailler un petit peu avant de les enchainer. Mais maintenant je pense que si je trouve une voie qui me convient bien je peux essayer de réaliser à vue quelque chose de plus dur.

– Peux tu décrire ton à vue d'”American Hustle” ? Un gros combat ?
Ma décision était globalement la même qu’avec “Fish Eye”. J’ai juste décidé d’y mettre un essai, sans pression. De mon point de vue c’est plus dur que “Fish Eye” et j’ai eu à batailler un peu plus. J’étais super relax et j’ai pu réussir les mouvements assez rapidement. Ce n’était pas si évident, et j’ai vraiment dû me battre dans certaines parties de la voie.

– Peux tu comparer “Fish Eye” et “American Hustle” ? Quelle voie as-tu trouvé la plus dure ?
Aha j’ai déjà répondu dans la question précédente. Je dirai que “Fish Eye” est plus facile et aussi plus triviale dans la partie dure déversante, mais la partie du haut est piégeuse. D’un autre côté, “Amercan Hustle” est plus dure, plus puissante et intense mais la partie du haut est très belle et plus évidente. J’étais assez perdue dans certaines parties mais j’étais plus confiante dans le haut. Mais de mon point de vue “American Hustle” a été plus dure à faire à vue.

– Tu es allée repérer “La dura dura” et “Joe mama”. Reviendras-tu pour les essayer à fond ? Ou as-tu des projets à la maison ?
Je vais vraiment devoir revenir ! Finir ce que j’ai commencé. J’adore essayer d’autres voies. J’ai des projets à la maison mais si j’ai l’opportunité de venir à Oliana je la saisirai.

– Quels sont tes rêves, les choses que tu aimerais accomplir en milieu naturel ? Ou préfères-tu te concentrer uniquement sur des objectifs en compétition ?
Bien sûr que j’en ai ! J’aime les deux ! J’ai juste besoin de trouver les bonnes périodes pour le faire. J’ai encore des choses à faire en compétition mais j’ai aussi des projets en extérieur dans un coin de ma tête.

We asked a few questions to Janja Garnbret after her onsight of “Fish Eye” and “American Hustle”, both 8c in Oliana last week. In addition, you will find the video we shot of the main difficulties of her onsight send of “American Hutsle”. Enjoy!

– What was the plan for your stay in Oliana?
I wanted to check out some routes to see how I feel, but mostly just climbing and I also wanted to see how far I can go with my onsight.

– How did the idea of trying to onsight “Fish Eye” come up?
Actually I never thought of trying to onsight an 8c, but later that day I just decided that I would give “Fish eye” a go. No pressure, just climbing.

– How did you feel during the onsight? Can you describe your climbing?
I felt super good, very relaxed and focused. I didn’t panic if I didn’t see a sequence right away, I was super chill. I think I was climbing pretty fast, resting where I thought was appropriate. I took some time in the last slabby part because there was no chalk anywhere and I really didn’t want to fall there.

– How was your pump? When did you understand that you would actually succeed?
In the first “harder” part I wasn’t that pumped. Up to the last jug of the more overhanging part I climbed pretty fast, resting where I needed and there I realised that I could succeed. But the last part was very tricky so I could fall anywhere but I stayed calm and slowly figured out the sequence.

– Have you ever attempted to onsight an 8c before? Do you think-as many do-that you haven’t reached your limits yet?
I have never attempted to onsight an 8c, before it was more flash attempt or I had to work a bit to send the thing. But now I think with the right route I could also try to onsight something harder.

– Can you describe your onsight of American Hustle? A big fight?
My decision was pretty much the same as with “Fish eye”. I just decided to give it a go, no pressure to onsight it. In my opinion it’s harder than Fish eye so I also had to fight a bit more. But I was very relaxed and could solve the moves pretty fast. It was not so obvious so I had to really fight in a few sections of the route.

– Can you compare your ascents of “Fish Eye” and “American Hustle”? Which route did you find harder?
I actually already answered in the previous answer but I would say “Fish eye” is easier and more obvious in the harder overhanging section, and the top part is very tricky. On the other hand “American Hustle” is harder, more powerful and intense and less obvious. I would say I was pretty lost on some parts of the route but the top part was very nice and obvious compared to the one in “Fish eye”. So in my opinion American Hustle was harder to onsight.

– You checked out “La dura dura” and “Joe mama”. Will you come back to redpoint them or other routes? Or are the plans you alluded to closer to home?
I definitely need to come back! To finish what I started. I would also love to try other routes. I also have some projects at home but if I get a chance to go to Oliana I will take it.

– Have you got some dreams of rock climbing achievements, or you prefer to focus on competitions?
Of course I do. I love both! I just need to find the right time when to do what. I still have some things to do in competitions, but I also have some outdoor projects in mind.

Créée et libérée en 2009, “Orbayu”, la grande-voie la plus célèbre et dure du massif des Picos de Europa (Cantabrie, Espagne) a en tout et pour tout vu 7 ascensions : par les équipeurs (les frères Pou), Nico Favresse, Cédric Lachat, Edu Marin, Gorka Karapeto et Siebe Vanhee.

Les frères Pou ont imaginé quatre nouvelles longueurs de départ pour ensuite rejoindre “Mediterraneo” pour une cotation globale donnée à 8c, puis recalée à 8b+ par le premier répétiteur, Nico Favresse.

Plusieurs des longueurs étaient déjà passées en A3, dont celle en 8c, avec des protections d’origine bien âgées, sans parler de la “mentalité Rätikon” adoptée par les frangins, qui distille des chutes de 20 à 25m.

Le grimpeur autrichien Mich Kemeter, passionné de grandes-voies, highline, base-jump et solo, a voulu ajouter son nom à la liste. Et c’est partie remise. 3 choses principales ressortent de cette vidéo, hormis la beauté des images de Xavier Coll. Primo, les décotes fréquentes des longueurs (L3 8a devient par exemple 7b). Deuzio, la critique de Mich sur la dégradation du rocher, assez floue : on ne sait pas s’il était au courant du passé A3 de certaines longueurs, ou si de nouvelles ascensions en artif ont aggravé sa qualité. Tertio, l’ouverture par l’Autrichien d’une sortie directe dure (non libérée) du 8c, sur rocher vierge, nommée “Natural Orbayu”.

Si certaines questions restent en suspens, nous saluons pour notre part le partage d’une vidéo sur un “échec”, face cachée de l’escalade sportive bien souvent mise dans l’ombre par les grimpeurs pros.

Bolted and freed in 2009, “Orbayu”, the most famous and hard multipitch route in Picos de Europa (Cantabria, Spain) has only seen 7 ascents: by its creators (the Pou brothers), Nico Favresse, Cédric Lachat, Edu Marin, Gorka Karapeto and Siebe Vanhee.

The Pou brothers imagined 4 pitches to start and meet “Mediterraneo” for an overall grade of 8c, which the first repeater Nico Favresse downgraded to 8b+.

Several of the pitches had gone down as A3 climbing before, including the 8c crux pitch, meaning old pro, before even mentioning the “Rätikon spirit” adopted by the brothers, with 20 to 25m falls.

Austrian climber Mich Kemeter, a fanatic of multipitch routes, highline, base jumping and free solo, wanted to add his name to the list. To no avail. 3 things particularly grabbed our attention in this video, beyond Xavier Coll‘s beautiful images. First, his frequent downgrades of the pitches, P3 going from 8a to 7b for instance. Second, Mich‘s criticism of the damage to the rock, rather unclear: did he not know of the A3 past of some of the pitches, or have new aid ascents deteriorated the face further in the recent past? Third, the opening of a new direct hard exit to the 8c pitch, on pristine rock, which he named “Natural Orbayu”.

If some questions remain unanswered, for our part we salute the release of a video telling the story of a “failure”, the hidden face of sport climbing that is too often pushed under the carpet.

On le savait, Alex Megos était à Siurana depuis le début du mois. Le mutant allemand vient de réaliser la seconde ascension de “King Capella”, le 9b+ ouvert par le grimpeur britannique Will Bosi le printemps dernier qui se compose de 15 mètres complètement explosifs ! Voici le commentaire d’Alex via les réseaux sociaux :

“C’était la voie pour laquelle je suis venu à Siurana, après l’avoir checkée en mars, just après que Will Bosi a fait la première. Déjà à l’époque je m’étais rendu compte que cela me convenait plutôt bien, alors avec Jenya Kazbekova nous avons décidé de passer quelques semaines en Espagne pour essayer des voies dures. Neuf jours dans la voie et deux steaks plus tard, j’ai pu réaliser la première répétition de cette voie très courte et à doigts. J’ai aussi utilisé une méthode légèrement différente de Will, en prenant une très large pince, une méthode que je juge plus facile que celle de Will. Il ne pouvait pas faire le mouvement comme je l’ai réalisé donc je pense que c’est une préférence personnelle. Très curieux d’entendre de voir ce que d’autres en pensent ! “

Sans se prononcer sur le niveau, Alex réalise une nouvelle voie dure en escalade sportive, lui qui a déjà un impressionnant CV avec le premier 9a à vue de l’histoire, justement à Siurana, les ouvertures de voies en 9b et plus comme “Bibliographie”, “Perfecto Mundo”, “Fight Club”, ou encore une répétition de 9b référence comme “FRFM”.

As we know, Alex Megos has been in Siurana since the beginning of the month. The German beast has just made the second ascent of “King Capella”, the 9b + opened by British climber Will Bosi last spring, which offers 15 meters of completely explosive climbing! Here is Alex’s comment via social media:

“That was the route I came to Siurana for, after checking it out once last March, right after Will Bosi made the FA. Already back then I realized that it suites me pretty well so together with Jenya Kazbkova we decided to spend a few weeks in Spain to have enough time for hard routes. After nine days on the route and two splits later I could get the first repeat of this very short and very crimpy test piece. I also used slightly different beta than Will taking a very wide pinch, which felt a little easier to me than what Will did. He couldn’t do the move the way I did it though, so I guess it’s personal preference. Very curious to hear what other people think!“

Without commenting on the grade, Alex just did a new hard route, he who already has an impressive CV with the first 9a onsight, precisely in Siurana, the first ascent of routes in 9b and more like “Bibliographie”,” Perfecto Mundo “,”Fight Club “, or even a repetition of famous the 9b from Chris Sharma, ” FRFM “.

L’article Alex Megos signe la seconde ascension de King Capella ! – Alex Megos signs King Capella’s second ascent! est apparu en premier sur Fanatic Climbing.

Le caillou espagnol est à l’honneur en ces temps gris et humides avec trois belles videos à la clé ! En octobre dernier, la grimpeuse espagnole Ana Belén Argudo signait la première féminine d’une voie historique de Cuenca, “El Cavario del Sicario” 8c. Equipée en 1992 par Julio Fernandez et libérée une année plus tard par ce dernier, puis immédiatement répétée par Dani Andrada et Stefan Glowacz, cette belle double casquette offre une escalade athlétique sur trous des plus fun !
C’est encore de l’escalade sur trous qu’on vous propose dans la seconde vidéo, avec Tom Bolger dans la première ascension de “Wild West” 9a/+ à Espadelles, Margalef, une voie qu’il avait libéré l’hiver dernier avec un pas de bloc brutal sur mono au départ avant une très résistante 2ème partie autour du 8c+.

Last October, the Spanish climber Ana Belén Argudo signed the first female of one of Cuenca’s historic route, “El Cavario del Sicario” 8c. Bolted in 1992 and freed one year later by Julio Fernandez, followed immediately by Dani Andrada and Stefan Glowacz, this beautiful double wave offers the most fun pocketclimbing! I
t’s pocketclimbing style again in the second video about “Wild West” 9a/+ first ascent by Tom Bolger (last winter). This line located at Espadelles, Margalef proposes a brutal mono bouldery entrance before a sustained 8c+.

De nouveau un peu d’escalade sportive en Espagne, avec trois extrêmes répétitions en Catalogne !

*** Jorge Diaz-Rullo réalise la 3ème ascension de “Samfaina” à Margalef, qui n’est autre que son projet secondaire de Finestra après “Cafe Colombia”. La voie est plutôt continue avec deux mouvements très durs sur bidoigts. Libérée par Chris Sharma en 2010 et immédiatement répétée par Ramon Julian, cette voie est restée ensuite sans nouvelle ascension pendant plus d’une décennie. Jorge propose 9a+ pour “Samfaina”, la jugeant plus dure que les autres 9a qu’il a réalisés dans ce mur.

*** “PapiChulo” de nouveau répété : quelques semaines après Mathieu Bouyoud, c’est cette fois-ci le grimpeur autrichien Stefan Scherz qui clippe le relais. Un peu plus de 2 mois après s’être cassé le pied et s’être donné comme défi de revenir plus fort pour réussir son premier 9a+, Stefan Scherz a tenu son pari à Oliana ! Âgé de seulement 20 ans et avec déjà quelques voies en 9ème degré à son actif, le compétiteur habitant Innsbruck semble en pleine progression. Jakob Schubert va commencer à regarder dans ses rétroviseurs !

*** Quelques jours après “King Capella”, Alex Megos réalise la seconde ascension de l’autre voie extrême du secteur Capella de Siurana libérée ce printemps par Will Bosi, “Furia de Jabali” 9b. Toujours sans se prononcer sur le niveau, Alex annonce 7 jours de travail et 3 gros steaks notamment dus à des conditions très froides avant sa réussite.

*** Jorge Diaz-Rullo just did “Samfaina” ‘s third ascent, his second project of Finestra sector, Margalef after his big one, “Cafe Colombia”. “Samfaina” is a power resistance testpiece with 2 hars moves on twofinger pockets. Freed by Sharma in 2010 and immediately repeated by Ramon Julian, the route was still unclimbed since more than a decade. Jorge proposes 9a+ for this one, that he finds harder than the other 9a’s he climbed on this impressive wall.

*** A new repeat of “papichulo” : few weeks after Mathieu Bouyoud, Austrian climber Stefan Scherz just clipped the anchor of Oliana’s kingline, “Papichulo”. 20 years old and few 9a’s under his belt, the competitor from Inssbruck seems to be in huge progression. Jakob Schubert will start to have a look in the mirror…

*** Few days after “King Capella”, Alex Megos is finishing the business in Capella sector of Siurana with “Furia de Jabali”, second ascent. Freed this spring by British climber Will Bosi, this short and sharp line took to Alex 7 days of projecting and 3 splits of his fingers due to very cold weather.
