L’expérimentée grimpeuse française Alizée Dufraisse vient de réaliser la première féminine d’un des blocs les plus jolis du Tessin (Suisse), “Versace” 8B à Brione. Ouvert par Daniel Woods et Jimmy Webb en 2020, ce toit offre une escalade ludique sur de superbes préhensions avant un réta particulièrement piégeux tout en en relances en équilibre sur un talon. A coup sûr un futur classique dans le 8B. Nous en profitons pour faire le point avec Alizée, tout en appréciant la vidéo de son essai victorieux. C’est la première ascension féminine de ce bloc, et déjà le 5ème 8B pour Alizée !

– Pourquoi être allée en Suisse cet hiver toi qui généralement travaille La Rambla en hiver ? Comment tu gères le froid ?
Pour changer un peu !! On est arrivés fin octobre mais on hésitait quand même entre Espagne encore ou changer, tout en sachant, pour moi, qu’aller en Suisse ça allait me demander de m’adapter à la grimpe sur granite (car je n’en ai quasiment jamais fait), à regrimper en bloc et retrouver les sensations avec de la hauteur, des chutes, et surtout bien évidement le froid et j’ai mis pas mal de temps à trouver mes marques ! La solution pour moi est de grimper avec des chaufferettes dans mes pantalons, je grimpe avec deux ou trois pantalons et j’essayais au maximum d’avoir doudounes et pantalon-doudoune quand je ne grimpe pas.

– Pourquoi as-tu jeté ton dévolu sur “Versace” ?
D’abord parce que j’ai de suite été super inspirée par le lieu, la rivière, ce bloc est un peu isolé et je m’y suis sentie bien. J’ai passé le premier mois après notre arrivée à essayer de me mettre dans le style en essayant plusieurs blocs plus faciles. À vrai dire aussi j’avais une appréhension de la hauteur en bloc et de la chute puis ensuite j’ai voulu trouver deux projets, un qui est haut et l’autre moins. Du coup j’ai commencé à travailler “Versace”, qui ne fait pas trop peur, et en même temps je travaille “Héritage” qui est plus impressionnant.

– Combien de séances as-tu mis, comment s’est passé le travail ?
J’ai fait 15 jours dans le bloc en tout. Dès le début j’arrivais à faire des assez bon enchainements et donc j’ai vu que c’était possible. En revanche il m’a fallu beaucoup de temps pour le réta final, qui paraissait pourtant être la section où je serais le mieux… Il m’a fallu 3 séances pour faire le mouvement, puis je n’y suis plus arrivée pendant deux séances… Cela me rendait folle, de pas comprendre exactement ce qui faisait que j’y arrivais ou que j’y arrivais pas… du coup difficile d’avoir confiance en moi dans les essais du départ… Petit à petit j’ai vraiment compris quelles étaient les subtilités, les positions qui faisaient que je faisais le mouvement et j’ai compris comment avoir ces positions du départ, mais ça a pris du temps, tout un processus…

– As-tu déjà d’autre projets pour 2022 ?
Plein de projets oui, continuer ici dans le Tessin et sûrement Magic Wood en suivant avec d’autres blocs de cette difficulté mais aussi essayer la cotation supérieure, que je n’ai encore jamais réalisée en bloc. Et surement été/automne refaire des voies et essayer de retranscrire la force que j’aurai pris dans les voies !

The French Alizée Dufraisse has just completed the first female ascent of one of the nicest boulders in Ticino (Switzerland), “Versace” 8B in Brione. Opened by Daniel Woods and Jimmy Webb in 2020, this roof offers fun climbing on superb holds before a particularly tricky mantle while balancing on a heel. For sure a future classic in the 8B range. We take this opportunity to ask a few questions at Alizée while enjoying the video of her victorious send. It ‘s the first female ascent of this boulder, and already the 5th 8B for Alizée! 

– Why did you go to Switzerland this winter, you who usually work La Rambla in winter? How do you manage the cold?

For a change!! We arrived at the end of October but we were still hesitating between Spain again or changing, knowing, for me, that going to Switzerland was going to require me to adapt to climbing on granite (because I rarely have any done), to do bouldering agin and find the good feeling with height, falls, and above all of course the cold and it took me a long time to find my marks! The solutions for me for the cold are to climb with warmers in my pants, I climb with two or three pants and I tried as much as possible to have down jackets and pants down jackets when I were not climbing.

– How did you chose “Versace”?

Firstly because I was immediately super inspired by the place, the river, this boulder is a little isolated and I felt good there. I spent the first month after we arrived trying to get in the style in several easier boulders. To tell the truth also, I had an apprehension of the boulder height and the fall then then I wanted to find two projects, a high one and an an other less. So I started working on “Versace”, which isn’t too scary, and at the same time I’m working on “Heritage” which is more impressive.

– How many sessions did you put in, how was the process until the ascent ? 

I did 15 days in the boulder in all. From the start I was able to do pretty good links and so I saw that it was possible. On the other hand, it took me a long time for the final mantle, which nevertheless seemed to be the section where I would be the best… It took me 3 sessions to do the movement, then I couldn’t do it for two more sessions… It was driving me crazy, not understanding exactly what made me succeed or not… so it was difficult to have confidence in myself while starting to climb the boulder… Little by little I really understood what the subtleties were, the positions that evolved as I did the movement and I understood how to have these positions from the beginning, but it took time, a whole process…

– Do you already have other projects for 2022?

Lots of projects, yes, some here in Ticino and surely Magic Wood following with other boulders of this grade but I would like to also try higher grades, which I have never yet realized in bouldering. And surely summer/autumn redoing routes and trying to use the strength that I would have won on the routes!

*** Katie Lamb s’offre son 3ème 8B+ avec un classique de Buttermilks (Bishop) en Californie, “Direct North”. Cette ligne ouverte par le local des lieux Shawn Diamond en 2009 démarre assis au pied de l’imposante boule caractéristique des lieux de Grandma Peabody. C’est une sortie directe plus difficile du 8B classique de “Direction”. Le problème propose une escalade athlétique et assez longue (12 mouvements difficiles) dans un dévers sur arquées. C’est déjà le 3ème 8B+ bloc de la grimpeuse américaine de 24 ans qui avait réalisé l’été dernier les ultra-classiques “Jade” et “New Base Line”.

*** La collante se poursuit à Fontainebleau : Malgré des conditions un poil plus humides jeudi, Max Bertone (14 ans) a comme sa sœur profité de la collante cette semaine pour réaliser son second 8B bloc avec le magnifique “Saruman du bas” à Cuvier Sorcières (derrière le Rempart). Ce bloc assez récent (2017) mais majeur a été découvert et ouvert en départ débout par Guillaume Joubert (8A) avant que Nico Pelorson n’ouvre le départ bas dans la foulée. Un bloc magnifique très bleausard tout en sensations, compression, et talons sur une arête déversante. Voici la vidéo du run gagnant du jeune réunionnais qui avait déjà empoché le debout en 2020.

*** Brooke Raboutou dans le Tessin : On l’avait quittée à Red Rocks avec “Trieste”, son projet en bloc naturel de 2021, la championne franco-américaine découvre actuellement les blocs du Tessin en Suisse. Brooke vient de réaliser la première féminine de “La Proue” 8B classique de Cresciano, tout en blocages sur réglettes plates et pieds à plat…

*** Vidéo d’Hallucination 8C+ : Le japonais Kazuma Ise, 19 ans, nous offre la vidéo de son run de “Hallucination” 8C+, proposant une grimpe impeccable et spécialité japonaise, un réta des plus moussus. Le crux sur mono a l’air bien sordide, pour un des passages les plus durs du pays avec les 4 autres 8C+ du pays du soleil levant : “United”, “Floatin”, “Nexus” et “Nayuta” (cliquez sur l’image pour voir la vidéo)

More bouldering sends this week after the 2 nice ticks by French women!

*** Katie Lamb offers her 3rd 8B+ boulder with a classic from Buttermilks, Bishop, California, “Direct North”. This line opened by local Shawn Diamond in 2009 is a sitstart of Grandma Peabody’s giant bowl. It’s an harder exit of classic 8B called “Direction”. The problem proposes an athletic and long climb (12 hard moves) on crimps in an overhang. It’s Katie’s 3rd 8B+ after the send of “Jade” and “New Base Line” last summer!

*** Sticky conditions in Font continue: Despite a little bit of humidity on Thursday, Max Bertone (14 years old) could take profit of cold and quite dry conditions in Font like his sister. He just climbed his second 8B boulder with “Saruman du bas” in Cuvier Sorcières (a little bit behind Rempart). This recent gem was discovered and opened by Guillaume Joubert for the stand (2017, 8A) and Nico Pelorson added immediatly an 8B low start. A very beautiful boulder, Font style, smooth climbing, compression on sloper, heelhooks and some balancy moves on an overhanging arete. The video of the send in the video juste above.

*** Brooke Raboutou is currently visiting Ticino, Switzerland with the first female ascent of Cresciano’s classic, “La proue” with slopy edges, poor feet and body tension required…

Deux françaises à bloc aujourd’hui !

*** Oriane Bertone répète “Karma”, un des blocs iconiques de Fontainebleau :
La jeune étoile Réunionnaise Oriane Bertone, 16 ans, vient de s’établir à Fontainebleau pour pouvoir s’entrainer au pôle France. Bien lui en a pris car se dessine depuis quelques jours une fenêtre de collante qui lui a permis de rétablir au sommet d’un des classiques de la forêt, le célèbre “Karma” à Franchard Cuisinière, à son premier essai de la journée ! Ouvert par Fred Nicole en 1995, “Karma” propose 3 mouvements très purs de compression sur des plats précaires, un bloc fort esthétique et court qui peut résumer à lui seul l’essence de l’escalade bellifontaine. Démonstration de puissance et de facilité (“le fameux Bertone flow” si caractéristique) dans la vidéo ci-dessous pour la première féminine de ce passage mythique, et une nouvelle jolie croix pour Oriane ! Quelque chose nous dit que ce n’est pas fini, Oriane étant très proche dans un gros projet à Franchard… A suivre !

*** Premier 8A+ bloc pour Amandine Loury :
On connaissait les qualités d’Amandine en falaise avec de nombreuses réalisations difficiles à son actif, mais depuis quelques temps cette dernière se met à faire du bloc en milieu naturel très régulièrement. Et force et de constater que ça paye, avec la première féminine de “Tumult’Asie” à La Capelle (Gard) pour son premier 8A+. Il lui aura fallu 5 séances et là aussi des conditions de collante parfaites. Bravo les filles !

Two French women crushing the boulders!

*** Oriane Bertone climbs one of Font’s most iconic lines:

The young star from Reunion island Oriane Bertone (16 years old) just moved near Font in order to train at the French national centre. She was lucky to arrive this week, as the cold and dry weather spell means one thing only: sticky conditions in the forest, allowing her to climb “Karma” today on her first go of the session! Opened by Fred Nicole in 1995, “Karma” serves up 3 pure compression moves on desperate slopers, an aesthetic and short line which perfectly embodies the famed Font style and spirit. Watch the video above, displaying her customary ease and the power (aka “the Bertone flow”) for the first female ascent of this classic. And that’s another nice tick under Oriane’s belt! And its seems it’s not finished yet, Oriane having another project in Franchard… To be followed…

*** First 8A+ by Amandine Loury:
We know Amandine’s ability to score big in the rock climbing game with several extreme sends, but in the last few months Amandine has been bouldering more often too. And her work has paid off as she just claimed the first female ascent of “Tumult’Asie” in La Capelle (South of France) for her first 8A+. It took her 5 sessions and with good conditions today, success was awaiting. Congrats girls!

Alors que l’allemand Yannick Flohe vient de réussir le passage cette semaine en en signant la 7ème ascension, le local Giuliano Cameroni nous présente la vidéo de sa réussite dans le panneau désormais iconique de Val Bavona, “Off the Wagon” 8C+, un des passages parmi les plus durs du pays. Une croix avec des méthodes spéciales, Giuliano préférant serrer une arquée et relancer plutôt que de réaliser l’extraordinaire derviche no foot qui a fait la renommée du bloc. Pour le grand mouvement il a essayé en vain une autre méthode par un bidoigt arqué des plus horribles…

While the German Yannick Flohe has this week claimed the 7th ascent of the campus board testpiece, local Giuliano Cameroni releases the video of his send of the iconic boulder of Val Bavona, “Off the Wagon” 8C +, one of the toughest lines in the country. The tick required special methods, with Giuliano preferring to crimp and go again rather than attempt the famous, and insane, no-foot cross. For the big move he did try another beta using a ridiculous two finger pocket…

To be complete, Sergei Topishko is also giving us today an insight into the low-start holds.

Pendant ce temps la grimpeuse Serbe Stasa Gejo vient de répéter “Delusion of Grandeur” 8A+/B à Chironico, vidéo à la clé. Ce bloc propose une escalade athlétique sur une rampe horizontale déversante, un des plus beaux blocs du coin. C’est la seconde féminine du problème après Isabelle Faus il y a deux ans.

Meanwhile, Serbian climber Stasa Gejo has just climbed “Delusion of Grandeur” 8A+/B in Chironico, video below. This boulder offers athletic climbing on an overhanging horizontal rail, one of the most beautiful boulders in the area. This is the second female ascent after Isabelle Faus’ two years ago.

We start this news with the impressive new video showing Ruyichi Murai climbing “Floatin” 8C+, a campus board boulder he freed 2 weeks ago in Japan. A power finger test with an incredible intensity! For sure an extreme problem in very pure and radical style, remembering Nalle Hakkataival’s “Burden of Dreams”.

*** Toujours au Japon, la relève arrive avec le jeune Kazuma Ise 19 ans, qui enchaine « Hallucination », un vieux bloc en 8C ouvert par Dai Koyamada en 2003 au Mont Hourai. Une prise clé ayant cédé, il est le premier à répéter de nouveau le problème. Après 9 jours de travail, « Hallucination » lui semble le bloc le plus dur qu’il ait réalisé et pense à du 8C+.

Always in Japan, young crushers are in the place with Kazuma Ise, 19 years old who is claiming a repeat of “Hallucination”, an old boulder opened by Dai Koyamada in 2003 located at Mount Hourai. A key hold broke and the young gun is the first to reclimb it after 9 days of work. Considering this problem is the hardest thing he climbed he suggered an upgrade to 8C+.

Video. En octobre dernier, Clément Lechaptois réalisait la première ascension du technico-physique “Solitary Daze” 8C tout en compression dans un gros dévers de Fionnay en Suisse. Ce bloc n’est autre que la directe de sortie d’un vieux problème de Dave Graham, “Permanent Midnight” 8A+, ouvert en 2006 dans une planche de 50°. Voici la vidéo du processus qui a conduit à la première ascension après 8 jours de travail. Les deux derniers mouvements durs sur des talons précaires ont l’air particulièrement torrides !

Ryuichi Murai vient de libérer un nouveau bloc dur au Japon avec la première ascension de “Floatin” ou le “Launch pad project” dans le parc naturel de Mizugakiyama. Essayé par Tomoa Narasaki en personne, et resté invaincu, ce bloc en granite très pur de 6 mouvements propose deux furieux premiers mouvements très aléatoires où il n’y a quasiment pas besoin des pieds. Après un premier blocage Pan Güllich pendu sur 2 arquées pour aller chercher une main gauche en épaule en no foot, vient un incroyable derviche sans les pieds, suivi d’une horloge et d’un dernier puissant blocage pour arriver au réta.

Ryuichi commente :
“Dernier jour meilleur jour ! Juste avant que le parc ne ferme, j’ai réalisé mon rêve avec le “Launch Pad Project”.
Pendant le travail, j’ai lutté avec des problèmes mentaux et physiques… une peau des doigts qui s’endommageait vite à cause d’une granite abrasif, des conditions autour de 0°, 2 mouvements très aléatoires à faible pourcentage de réussite…
Mais j’ai maintenant la satisfaction d’avoir accompli et surmonté quelque chose d’incommensurable. Cela a été un des meilleurs jours d’escalade de ma vie !”

C’est le second 8C+ ouvert par Ryuichi ici, lui qui avait proposé “Decided SD” il y a 2 ans. Ryuichi avait aussi ouvert “Nexus” à Shiobara dans le même niveau.

Ryuichi Murai just freed a new hard line in Japan with the first ascent of “Floatin” V16 aka “Launch Pad Project” in Mizugakiyama park. Tried unsuccessfully by Tomoa Narasaki, this granite boulder is very pure, 6 moves with the 2 first moves with low-probability 2 first moves where you don’t have to use your feet. After hanging on 2 crimps and campusing into a left gaston, you have to do a bi cross before a powerful deadpoint move to the top of the boulder.

Ryuichi comments:
“Last day best day!
Just before the gate closed, realized my dream “Launch Pad project”! In the process of completion, struggled with many physical and mental factors.. severe finger skin damage from sharp granite, 0℃ cold condition, two low-probability savage cruxes..etc…but the sense of fulfillment gained after overcoming them is immeasurable.
It was best day to find growth in my climbing life!”

It’s Ryuichi’s second V16 first ascent here after “Decided SD” 2 years ago and 3rd 8C+ first ascent with “Nexus” located in Shiobara.

Après un premier trip sur place au début de l’année, Brooke Raboutou empoche à nouveau un bloc dur avec le panneau très à doigts de “Trieste” 8B+. Ce classique de Red Rocks (Nevada, US) avait été ouvert par Paul Robinson en 2014, il est situé au secteur de First Creek Canyon. Il aura fallu 3 jours à Brooke lors de second séjour, empochant le bloc au dernier essai de la journée.

Cette dernière commente sur Instagram :
“Bon sang, cela fait du bien de rétablir en haut de ce bloc qui m’avait poussée dans mes retranchements au niveau physique et mental il y a un an. De retour, je me suis sentie plus forte, j’ai pu mettre les états d’âme et la pression de côté, contrairement au précédent séjour. J’adore me dépasser et me perfectionner pour ce genre de choses, c’est un processus que je veux continuer à entretenir. Au projet suivant !”

C’est déjà le 3ème 8B+ bloc de Brooke qui avait déjà réalisé “Muscle Car” et “Jade”. Et l’histoire n’est peut-être pas finie puisque le départ assis de “Trieste” (8C) est potentiellement dans son viseur…

After a first trip to the area at the beginning of 2021, Brooke Raboutou just completed one of the hard classics of Red Rocks, Nevada, with “Trieste” V14 opened by Paul Robinson in 2014. The boulder went down on her last try of the 3rd day. Brooke wrote on Instagram:

“Damn, it feels good to stand on top of a boulder that pushed my physical and mental limits a year ago. Coming back, I felt much stronger and was able to let go of expectations and lighten the pressure I put on myself the previous trip. The process of pushing myself and growing from it is one I will forever admire and continue to chase. Onto the next project!“

It’s her third V14, Brooke having already climbed “Muscle Car” and “Jade”. The story is maybe not finished because “Trieste” has a sit start in the 8C range which could be her next target. Wait and see…

Les derniers 8C+ bloc sont l’oeuvre de l’américain Taylor McNeill et du belge Simon Lorenzi !
Après 3 ans d’efforts et plus de 50 jours de travail, Taylor a réussi la première ascension de “Moonlight Sonata”, le bloc le plus dur de Joe’s Valley, une proue à compression qu’il propose à 8C+, vidéo ci-dessous à la clé. Jusqu’alors, Taylor avait déjà réussi quelques blocs extrêmes comme “Squoze” (8C) , “Southern Drawl” (8C) ou encore “The Big Island” (8B+/C à Bleau).

On n’avait pas donné de ses nouvelles depuis l’ouverture de “Soudain Seul”, le Belge Simon Lorenzi vient quant à lui d’annoncer une répétition du classique Suisse de Val Bavona “Off the wagon low start” 8C+ après les ascensions de Raboutou, Webb, Woods et Cameroni. Voici son commentaire laissé sur les réseaux sociaux :
“J’ai essayé la version basse de bloc le jour où j’ai réussi le grand mouvement du départ debout.
Après avoir passé quelques sessions sur ce bloc ces deux derniers mois, tombant à chaque fois au même mouvement j’ai finalement trouvé la clé il y a 2 semaines pendant une nuit pluvieuse. C’était mon dernier jour et le réta était mouillé donc j’ai décidé de trouver quelque chose pour dompter davantage ce mouvement clé. J’ai réglé de petits détails qui m’a permis de faire le mouvement 5 fois sur 10. Du coup j’ai compris que la session suivante pouvait être la bonne.
Cette semaine je suis venu à Sonlerto pour une session. Le seul jour grimpable était hier à cause de la pluie. Donc j’ai fait la route depuis la Belgique (9 heures) mardi en espérant que ce jour serait assez. J’ai commencé à essayer à 15h mais après 3 heures et environ 15 essais je tombais toujours à ce fameux mouvement, et je commençais à devenir fou et vraiment fatigué. Ma dernière option a été de prendre un gros repos et je suis allé voir Clem Lechaptois et Dave Graham essayer “Roadkill” pendant une heure. Je suis revenu pour donner mes derniers essais. Après une première tentative pas terrible, j’ai décidé de remettre immédiatement un nouvel essai pour garder mes sensations dans le crux. Cela s’est passé bien mieux que prévu, et quelques cris plus tard, j’étais au sommet du bloc !”

After 3 years of effort and more than 50 days of work, Taylor has successfully completed the first ascent of “Moonlight Sonata”, the hardest boulder in Joe’s Valley, a compression prow that he proposes at 8C+, video below. Until then, Taylor had already succeeded in some extreme boulders like “Squoze” (8C), “Southern Drawl” (8C) or even “The Big Island” (8B+/C in Bleau).

Quite silent since his first ascent of “Soudain Seul”, The Belgian Simon Lorenzi has just announced a repeat of the Swiss classic of Val Bavona “Off the wagon low start” 8C + after the ascents of Raboutou, Webb, Woods and Cameroni. Here is his comment left on social media:
“I started to try the low start as soon as i did the big move from the stand once.
After spending few sessions in the boulder the last two months and falling at the same move every time i finally found the key 2 weeks ago during a rainy night. It was my last day and the top out was wet so i decided to try something to improve THE crux move. Surprisingly i found a small trick and did the move around 5 times out of 10 tries. From there i felt that the next session could be the one.
So this week i went to Sonlerto for one session. The only climbable day was yesterday because of the rain so i did the road ​from belgium (9hrs) thuesday hoping that the day after would be enough. Wednsday i started to try at 3pm but after 3 hours and 15th tries falling at the same f****** move i was going crazy but also too tired.
My last option was to have a big rest so i went to see Dave Graham and Clément Lechaptois trying “Road Kill” for 1h.
I came back to the Wagon to give my last few attempts. My first attempt was’nt very good so i decided to go quickly afterwards to keep the feeling of the crux.
It worked better than expected and few screams later i was standing on the top of the boulder!”

L’américaine Isabelle Faus coche un nouveau 8B+/V14 avec la ligne “Shadow Walker” située sur le site de SwissCo dans le Colorado (USA). C’est la troisième ascension du bloc après celle de Charlie Barron en décembre 2020 puis celle de Jimmy Webb en juin dernier. Isabelle Faus réalise ainsi la première ascension féminine. La grimpeuse est une habituée de cette cotation puisque que “Shadow Walker” est son 7^ème bloc dans le 8B+/V14 avec pour dernier en date “Emasculator” durant l’été 2020. La vidéo de cette croix datant de cet été est visible dans la vidéo ci dessous compilant plusieurs de ses réalisations à SwissCo (8’11 pour “Shadow Walker”).

The American Isabelle Faus ticks a new 8B + / V14 with the “Shadow Walker” boulder located on the SwissCo site in Colorado (USA). This is the third ascent of the boulder after the one of Charlie Barron in December 2020 and the one of Jimmy Webb last June. Isabelle Faus thus realised the first female ascent. She is used to this grade since “Shadow Walker” is her 7th boudler in the 8B + / V14 grade, the 6th being “Emasculator” during the summer 2020. The video of the “Shadow Walker” ascent -she sent it this summer- can be seen in a compilation video with several Faus’ achievements at SwissCo (8’11 for “Shadow Walker“).

On vous avait déjà parlé du jeune prodige francilien de 22 ans Killian Chabrier. Ce grimpeur orléanais a quitté ses terres natales il y a 4 ans pour venir s’installer en région Parisienne, précisément à Massy pour s’entraîner et progresser en bloc. Killian vient de délaisser les salles d’entrainement et Bleau le temps de découvrir une des Mecque du bloc helvète, Cresciano. En une semaine sur place, le bilan des courses du trip suisse est flatteur, avec deux répétitions des ultra-classiques de la haute-difficulté mondiale “Dreamtime” et “The Story of Two Worlds” en deux jours de travail chacun, blocs qu’il propose de décoter à 8B+. Il s’en explique ci-dessous.

– Pourquoi avoir choisi ce trip à Cresciano ? Besoin de te frotter à des références ?
Tout d’abord ce trip n’était pas du tout prévu pour moi, je voulais m’entraîner pour les compétitions et n’avais pas prévu de voyager. Une semaine avant de partir, Guillaume Levernier mon coach me dit qu’une des personnes qui devait partir avec lui s’était blessée, et que si ça me chauffait il y avait une place. Je n’ai pas pu résister et j’ai sauté sur l’occasion (je pense que j’ai bien fait) ! J’ai toujours eu envie de faire les classiques qui ont influencé l’histoire de l’escalade ! Donc pour une première fois à Cresciano j’ai voulu essayer des blocs mythiques tels que ceux-ci. Au départ, je me suis donc mis en projet principal “Dreamtime” et en secondaire “The Dagger” à la base, mais qui est très vite devenu “The Story of Two Worlds”.

– Après Clément Lechaptois tu es le 2ème français à rétablir en haut de “Dreamtime”, bloc historique de Cresciano, considéré comme le premier 8C bloc de l’histoire. Qu’as-tu ressenti ?
Vraiment hyper content ! Surtout que la météo était plutôt incertaine, en arrivant je pensais seulement avoir 2 jours pour enchaîner. Lors de ma deuxième séance j’étais très mal embarqué pour le faire, je suis tombé 5-6 fois au grand mouvement qui est le crux. À mon 14ème essai de la séance je me sentais cuit physiquement et j’ai décidé de changer de préhension en mettant ma main gauche un peu plus à droite, et ça l’a fait direct ! Une sensation incroyable car mêlant pression et run a muerte, sûrement un de mes plus beaux souvenirs de grimpe !

– Tu as expédié le bloc en 2 séances. Tu avais déjà expédié « Off the Wagon » en quelques essais. Comment fais-tu pour réaliser des blocs de top niveau mondial en si peu de temps ?
Ahah question assez difficile à répondre ! Je pense plutôt que pour l’instant tous ces blocs n’étaient pas à mon niveau maximum et plutôt dans mon style. J’ai encore la possibilité de faire des erreurs dans mes runs et que ça marche quand même ! Sinon pour préparer ces séances, je regarde beaucoup de vidéos pour avoir un aperçu de toutes les méthodes possibles. En arrivant sur le bloc je touche toute les préhensions pour me familiariser avec. Je mets toujours un essai flash même dans mes projets max car cela ne coûte rien ! Après ce run flash je cale les mouvements et quand j’ai réussi tous les mouvements, même si je ne suis pas hyper calé je mets quelques runs pour essayer d’enchaîner.

– Que penses-tu de “Dreamtime” ?
“Dreamtime” est composé de deux parties, un début très à sensations pour rejoindre le debout, avec un talon dur à tenir que j’ai réussi à apprivoiser très vite et qui n’était pas du tout un crux pour moi. Cette section vaut environ 8A. Puis une deuxième section qui est le debout avec plusieurs méthodes, soit une “envoyade” que j’ai faite car je trouvais ça bien plus joli et dans mon style, soit une traversée sur micro arquées. Puis la fin après le crux est bien plus facile et quasi intombable quand elle est calée. Cette deuxième section, je l’évalue dans les 8A+. Un 8A sur un 8A+ donne quelque chose dans les environs de 8B+ donc j’ai choisi de le mettre à 8B+, après ce n’est que mon ressenti.

– Tu as ensuite expédié aussi « The story of Two worlds » 8C en 2 jours. Raconte-nous.
Pour ce bloc l’histoire est plutôt drôle. Je suis monté au secteur à mon troisième jour de grimpe vraiment fatigué pour essayer “The Dagger”, le 8B/+ de fin. Je me suis échauffé dedans avec Camille Coudert, on a déchiffré assez vite les méthodes et j’ai enchainé à mon deuxième essai du bas, en environ 1h-1h30 max, échauffement compris. Et on s’est rendus compte qu’avec les méthodes de Megos, notre ressenti était que ça devait valoir plus 8A+ que 8B/+. Du coup, après l’avoir enchainé aussi rapidement, j’ai essayé le départ assis. Avec la fatigue j’ai pas pu caler le crux pour rejoindre le debout. À la deuxième séance j’ai très vite calé les mouvements du début, et sur un run pour caler les premiers mouvements je me suis retrouvé dans la fin et là la chute n’était plus une option et j’ai enchainé ! Pour les méthodes j’ai fait quasi exactement comme Megos et j’ai refusé de mettre une genouillère car je trouvais ça bien plus stylé sans ! Mais en échangeant avec Camille sur le début, la genouillère doit peut-être enlever un peu de difficulté au début mais rien de signifiant comparé aux nouvelles méthodes de fin. C’est pour cela que j’ai décidé de le décoter pour le mettre à 8B+, j’ai trouvé cette ligne aussi dure voire un peu plus facile que “Dreamtime” !

– Et le départ bas “low start” de Koyamada en 8C+ ?
Je n’ai pas essayé le départ de Koyamada car bien moins logique que le départ normal de visuel ; ça n’avait pas l’air de rajouter énormément à la suite, peut-être que cela le ferait passer à un 8B+ dur. Mais ce n’est qu’une supposition !

– Tu sembles loin de tes limites. As-tu des projets d’ampleur en milieu naturel pour cet hiver à Bleau ?
Oui, je sens que je suis loin de mes limites, je n’ai pas encore eu de projet où il faudrait que je m’entraîne spécifiquement pour pouvoir y arriver ! Cet hiver j’ai des projets comme “Big Island assis” et “Délire Onirique assis” à Bleau. Et surtout retourner au Val Bavona faire “Off the Wagon assis” et voir le vrai assis sans le wagon, je pense que c’est l’une des plus grosses FA à faire en Suisse, et de plus elle est vraiment dans mon style !

– Penses-tu t’essayer à des voies dures typées bloc pour profiter de ta forme actuelle ?
Mon seul projet en voie pour le moment est “Condé de choc” à Entraygues, un 9a vraiment court avec deux gros pas de bloc. Cette été j’étais vraiment bien dedans et je pense y retourner l’été prochain pour enchaîner !

A while ago we told you about the young Parisian prodigy Killian Chabrier, 22. 4 years ago, he left his home for the greater Paris in order to train and improve further still in bouldering. Killian just gave the shoulder to indoor training and Font for one week in order to discover one of Switzerland’s bouldering meccas, Cresciano. He managed to tick two of the major classics of the area, “Dreamtime” and “The Story of Two Worlds” and suggests a downgrade to 8B+ for both. He explains his thought process below.

– Why did you choose Cresciano? Psyched to check some references?
This trip was quite unplanned for me! I wanted to train for comps and didn’t expect to come here! A week before departure, my coach Guillaume Levernier offered me to join them because one someone picked up an injury. So I couldn’t resist and took the opportunity. I always wanted to try the classics which left a mark on climbing history. So for my first time in Cresciano I tried a few legendary boulders, and decided to select “Dreamtime” as my main project and “The dagger” as the second, but very quickly my second one actually became “The Story of Two Worlds”.

– You climbed the boulder very quickly, in 2 sessions. You also climbed “Off the wagon” on a previous trip in just a few tries. How do you explain your ability to top out extreme boulders so fast?
Aha tough question! I think that the boulders I tried were not at my limit and also suited my style. I can still make mistakes on my goes and send! To prepare my sessions I watch a lot of videos to be clear on all the different methods. At the boulder, I touch every hold to get used to how they feel. I always give a flash burn, even on my big projects because why not! After the flash go, I check all the moves and once I have worked out all of them, even if my betas are not the best, I start from the ground.

– After Clément Lechaptois, you’re only the second French guy to climb “Dreamtime”, a historical testpiece of Cresciano, considered to be the first 8C in bouldering history. How do you feel?
Very happy of course ! The weather forecast was not in our side, getting there I was thinking we would have 2 days of climbing only. In my 2nd session things weren’t shaping up very nicely, I fell 5-6 times on the large move, considered to be the crux. On my 14th go I started to be tired and decided to change my left hand position on the hold, a little bit more to the right and it worked straight away! An incredible feeling mixing pressure and a muerte, perhaps one of my best climbing memories.

– What do you think about “Dreamtime”?
“Dreamtime” could be divided into 2 parts, a start where you need accuracy into the stand, with a tricky heel hook that posed me no troubles though. This part is around 8A. Then the stand part with different betas possible, you can choose the spank, what I did because I found it nicer and in my style, or you can traverse on small crimps. Then the final section is easier, you can’t fall once you know what to do. This second part is around 8A+ for me. So an 8A into an 8A+, in my opinion, gives you something around 8B+, so I chose this grade, but it’s just my opinion.

– You also climbed “The Story of Two Worlds” in 2 days…
For this boulder, the story is funny: I got up to the sector on my third climbing day in a row, I was very tired, in order to check “The dagger”, the final 8B/+. I warmed-up on it with Camille Coudert, we found all the methods very quickly and I did it at my second try from the start in around 1h-1h30. We realised that with Alex Megos’ betas our feeling was climbing something in the 8A+ range, compared to the 8B/+. So after this quick intro, I tried the sit. Due to the tiredness I couldn’t stick the crux to transition into the stand start. On my second session I quickly found my own betas in the sit, and on a run primarily meant to check my betas I surprisingly found myself in the top section. The fall wasn’t an option and I sent it! For the betas, I did exactly the same as Alex Megos and refused to put on a kneepad, because I found the boulder more pleasant without. Talking with Camille about the start, the kneepad could probably shave off some difficulty at the beginning but nothing significant compared to the new ending. That’s why I decided to downgrade it to 8B+. I found this line to be about the same difficulty as “Dreamtime”, maybe even a little bit easier.

– Did you try Koyamada’s low 8C+ version?
No, I didn’t try this start. It’s less logical than the normal start aesthetically speaking, and it seems to add nothing special, but maybe with this start you can climb a hard 8B+. But it’s only a wild guess!

– You seem far from your limit. Have you got some big projects in the pipeline in Font?
Yes, I feel I can climb harder. I have not yet put my hands on a project where I needed to train specifically to send. This winter, “Big Island sit” (“aka “Soudain Seul”) and “Délire onirique assis” are on my shortlist. I want to return to Val Bavona to try “Off the wagon sit” and check out the real sit without the wagon, one of the biggest first ascents left in Switzerland, plus it suits my style perfectly!

– What about some powerful extreme routes?
My only sport climbing project for the moment is “Condé de choc” in Entraygues, Briançonnais, a short 9a with 2 bouldery sections. This summer I felt quite well on it and I think I will return next summer to send it!

Le top bloqueur américain Matt Fultz a réalisé un mois de février 2021 prolifique à Red Rocks dans le Colorado, avec une bonne partie des classiques dures du site en poche. Ainsi Matt a réalisé en quelques jours “Sleepwalker” (8C+), “Squoze” (8B+), “Trieste sit” (8B+) et “The Nest” (8C). Compte-rendu en video ci-dessous en guise de souvenir.

Ryuichi Murai vient de libérer une nouveau gros projet et d’ouvrir “Nexus” à Shiobara, un enchainement de 40 mouvements qu’il propose 8C+. Autant le passage est sûrement d’une difficulté inouïe et le plus dur jamais réalisé par Ryuchi dans ce style, autant nous nous posons la question du sens de proposer une cotation bloc plutôt qu’une cotation voie pour définir le niveau d’un effort aussi long qui est clairement dans une filière résistance. Cette interrogation vaut aussi pour des blocs se voulant étalons de la haute-difficulté comme “Horizon”, “Wheel of Life”, “Wheel of Chaos” ou encore “Grand Illusion”. Mais peu importe.

“Finalement ! Je suis super heureux d’avoir fait mon grand projet “Uma extension”. La difficulté de cette ligne a été, outre le fait d’empiler un grand nombre de mouvements à haute intensité de force, d’accumuler du stress lié à des petits écueils et des erreurs qui affectaient grandement mes performances. Par conséquent, c’était un challenge non seulement pour l’endurance, mais aussi pour ce qui est de la réalisation parfaite des mouvements.

Après en avoir compris la logique, j’ai revu en profondeur tous les mouvements et je les ai répété jusqu’à ce que mon corps puisse les réaliser sans réfléchir.
Hier, tous les morceaux se sont assemblés parfaitement, et un puzzle vieux de 5 ans a finalement été complété.

Le bloc fait 40 mouvements et je suis un peu troublé d’annoncer une cotation bloc. Cependant je propose V16 parce que je trouve cet enchainement plus dur que d’autres lignes du même style “Babel” (8C) à Shiobara et “In search of time lost” (8C) à Magic Wood. J’aimerais le comparer à “Grand Illusion” un jour.

Ryuchi Murai is one of the strongest Japanese outside boulderers with Ryohei Kameyama or the legend Dai Koyamada, with plenty of 8C’s already under his belt and the first ascent of extreme boulders like “United” 8C+. Ryuichi has just freed a new big project and opened “Nexus” in Shiobara, a 40 movements line with an 8C+ grade proposition. As much as the passage is surely incredibly difficult and the hardest ever made by Ryuchi in this style, we ask ourselves the question of the meaning of proposing a bouldering grade rather than a rockclimbing grade to define the level of such a long effort which is clearly in a resistance testpiece. This question also applies to boulders that want to be standards of high-difficulty in the bouldering world like “Horizon”, “Wheel of Life”, “Wheel of Chaos” or even “Grand Illusion”. But whatever.
Here is Ryuchi’s comment on his Instagram account:

“Finally! Super psyched to have done my long standing project “UMA extension”.

The difficulty in achieving this line was that in addition to the large number of moves and high strength, the accumulation of mental stress due to slight squeaks and mistakes greatly affected performance. Therefore, it was important not only for endurance but also for how sophisticated the movement could be.

After understanding the logic, I thoroughly reviewed all the moves again and practiced repeatedly until my body naturally started to move without thinking. And yesterday, all the pieces fit perfectly, and the five-year puzzle was finally completed.

This line consists of nearly 40 moves and I was worried about the boulder grade. However, I propose V16 because it felt harder than the similar lines “Babel” (V15/8C) in Shiobara and “In search of time lost (V15/8C)” in Magic Wood. Wanna compare it with “Grand Illusion” someday.
On to the next project.“

Clément Lechaptois vient de réaliser une nouvelle première ascension extrême à son CV avec l’ouverture de “Solitary Daze” 8C à Fionnay en Suisse qui est la directe de sortie du 8A+ de “Permanent Midnight” ouvert par Dave Graham en 2006 dans un panneau déversant à 50°. C’est le 4ème 8C de Clément et sa première ascension la plus difficile.

“Le problème partage le premier mouvement avec le 8A+ puis va tout droit au lieu de traverser à droite vers l’arête. Cela m’a pris environ 8 jours je pense, j’ai réussi à faire la première section du bloc en 3/4 jours (mais je n’étais pas capable de l’empiler plus de 3 fois par session) et je pensais que je le ferai vite. Mais j’ai eu tout faux. Le vrai crux était en fait le dernier mouvement. J’ai essayé pas mal de méthodes différentes mais ma première idée fut finalement la bonne pour moi. J’ai utilisé un talon gauche qui était précaire, mais qui marchait pas mal quand il ne zippait pas. C’est une bonne méthode je pense. Les prises et les mouvements du passage sont incroyables, j’ai pris beaucoup de plaisir en l’essayant !”

Clément Lechaptois just added a new extreme first ascent to his ticklist with “Solitary Daze”, located in Fionnay, Switzerland. It is the direct exit of “Permanent Midnight” 8A+ opened by Dave Graham in 2006 on a 50° overhang. It’s Clément’s 4th 8C and his hardest first ascent.

“The problem only shares the first move with the 8A+, then it goes straight instead of traversing right to the arete. It took me about 8 days I think. I managed to do the first section in 3-4 days (but I wasn’t able to do it more than 3 times per session) and I thought I could do the problem. But I was wrong. The real crux, in the end, turned out to be the last move. I tried a lot of different things but my first idea was eventually the right one for me. I used a left heel hook that was quite low percentage but worked pretty well when it didn’t slip. It’s a good one I think. The holds and movements are amazing, I had a lot of fun trying it!”

Le cinéaste belge Gilles Charlier a suivi Simon durant de longues semaines l’hiver dernier à Fontainebleau dans sa quête du Graal : être le premier à réaliser un des projets les plus mythiques de la forêt de Fontainebleau. Afin de finaliser la production du film, une campagne de financement a été lancée. Petite rectification par rapport à ce qui est énoncé dans la bande-annonce, c’est bien Vincent Pochon qui a fait la première ascension du debout et logique du bloc, Dave Graham ayant précédemment ouvert “The Island” une version en 8B+ proposant un départ des plus bizarres, une version raccourcie maintenant tombée dans l’oubli.

A Rocklands, il répète le majeur “Finnish line”, mais aussi réalise la seconde ascension de “Petrichor”, un bloc ouvert par Dave Graham il y a 2 ans à la gestuelle originale. Il nous propose aussi une démo de puissance lors de son essai flash dans “The guest list” 8B où rien ne semble vibrer… Quelle machine !

On the French side, the young mutant Antoine Girard spent his month of August in Switzerland with some french guns like Yannis Gautier or Pierre Shankland. Le champion autrichien Jakob Schubert vient de flasher son 3ème 8B+ bloc au pays avec “Anam Cara” à Silvretta, un bloc référence dans le niveau dans panneau très déversant proposant 5 mouvements basiques sur arquées. Ce bloc très pur avait même été ouvert par Bernd Zangerl en 2007 à 8C avant d’être revu à la baisse après quelques répétitions. Jakob avait déjà réussi flash les plus longs et résistants “Catalan Witness the fitness” à Cova del Ocell et “Never ending story” à Magic Wood. Il réalise un nouveau coup ici avec un bloc bien plus court suivi quelques minutes suivantes par un autre classique dur et court, “Memento” 8B à son 2e essai, après être passé pas loin du flash. Austrian champion Jakob Schubert flashed his 3rd 8B+ boulder, at home with “Anam Cara” located in Silvretta. This famous testpiece offers 5 basic moves on crimps on a 50° overhang. This pure boulder was opened by Bernd Zangerl in 2007 and graded 8C, before being proposed in the 8B+ range after some repeats. Jakob also flashed “Catalan witness the fitness” in Cova del Ocell and “Never ending story” in Magic Wood. He strikes again in this style with this time a much shorter problem. To finish the day off, Jakob was close to flashing another testpiece with “Memento” 8B (2nd go). Here is the video of his feat!

La 3ème féminine de “Jade” le 8B+ emblématique de RMNP (Colorado) vient d’être réalisé hier par Ashima Shiraishi avec une journée impressionnante non-soumise à la gravité : “Jade” V14, “Riddles in the Park” V12, “Golden Rows of Flows” V11 et “Blood Money stand” V10. La vidéo de l’ascension ici sur son compte Instagram. On rappelle qu’Ashima avait libéré la première proposition mondiale en 8C avec la seconde ascension d'”Horizon” en 2016 à l’âge de 14 ans.

The 3rd female ascent of “Jade”, famous crimpy V14 located in RMNP (Colorado) has been completed yesterday by Ashima Shiraishi with an impressive no gravity day: “Jade” V14, “Riddles in the Park” V12, “Golden Rows of Flows” V11 and “Blood Money stand” V10! The video of the repeat can be watched here. Remember Ashima Shiraishi climbed the first V15 proposition in the world with “Horizon” in 2016 at 14 years old.
