Alex Megos n’a pas mis fin à sa parenthèse falaise de début de printemps avec son prolifique séjour à St-Léger. Le grimpeur allemand s’est rendu à Margalef il y a quelques semaines où il réalisé la seconde ascension de “Mejorando Imagen” dans le gros dévers central de La Finestra. La première ascension de cette voie très raide sur monos et bidoigts équipée par Iker Pou avait été réalisée par Ramon Julian en 2013 (en juillet !) après 3 jours de travail et proposée 9a. Située un peu plus à gauche que l’extrême “Perfecto Mundo”, “Mejorando Imagen” est une directe de départ du 9a classique de “Victima Perez” avec une difficulté assez concentrée sur 20 mètres de haut avant un mur final plus facile.
Après avoir été très proche lors de son 3ème jour de travail dans la voie, tombant dans le dernier mouvement dur de la voie, Alex a ensuite déchanté et est retombé dans le pas de bloc principal de la voie, un jeté sur un mono. C’est finalement le dernier jour sur place qu’Alex réussit la ligne à son 6ème essai de la journée, les doigts ensanglantés, en allant chercher les paires ! “Parfois, je ne comprends rien à l’escalade et au mental” conclut le grimpeur pro allemand. Pour cette dernière, Alex propose 9b et est curieux de voir ce que diront les prochains répétiteurs.

Alex Megos did not put an end to his early spring break with his prolific trip in St-Léger. The German climber went to Margalef a few weeks ago where he made the second ascent of “Mejorando Imagen” in the big central overhang of La Finestra. The first ascent of this very steep route on monos and two finger pockets, bolted by Iker Pou, was done by Ramon Julian in 2013 (in July!) after 3 days of work and proposed at 9a. Located a little more to the left of the famous “Perfecto Mundo”, “Mejorando Imagen” is a direct start of the classic 9a “Victima Perez” with a fairly concentrated difficulty over 20 meters high before an easier finish.
After coming close on his 3rd day, falling on the very last hard move of the route, Alex then failed on the main boulder crux, a jump to a mono. It was finally on his last day in Spain that Alex sent the line. On his 6th try of the day, with bloody fingers, the sending go was meant for cleaning the draws! “Sometimes I don’t understand anything about climbing and the mind” concluded the pro German climber. For the grade, Alex suggests an upgrade to 9b and is curious to see what the next repeaters will make of it.

En réalisant son premier 9a avec le gros plafond de Massone (Arco), “Underground”, l’autrichienne Eva Hammelmüller (21 ans) confirme son super état de forme déjà constaté l’an dernier au vu de résultats prometteurs en compétition et d’avalanches de croix sur caillou. C’est la seconde féminine de la voie après Laura Rogora et la 3ème autrichienne dans le 9ème degré après Angie Eiter et Babsi Zangerl. Voici la réaction d’Eva.

“Je m’appelle Eva Hammelmüller et j’ai commencé l’escalade à l’âge de 8 ans. Alors que je cherchais de nouveaux projets et que “Underground” était complètement différent de toutes les autres voies d’escalade que j’avais essayées, j’ai voulu me mettre au défi dans celle-ci. “Underground” est un itinéraire historiquement important et même s’il ne correspondait pas vraiment à mon style, c’était tout simplement incroyable à grimper !
Au total, il m’a fallu 11 essais pour réaliser la voie, et même si j’ai eu un peu de mal dans le premier crux, je suis vraiment contente des progrès que j’ai faits d’un essai à un autre.
J’ai toujours beaucoup aimé grimper à l’extérieur, et j’ai profité du temps sans compétitions pendant la pandémie pour repousser mes limites sur les falaises. Pour moi, grimper à l’extérieur est un changement agréable et nécessaire à l’escalade de compétition, et j’aime particulièrement l’après-travail. Trouver le bon équilibre entre compétition et outdoor est pour moi très important. Mon objectif principal est d’être aussi forte que possible et d’obtenir de bons résultats en compétition ainsi que de gravir de nombreuses lignes superbes dehors.”

With “Underground” (Massone, Arco), her first 9a, Austrian 21-years old Eva Hammelmüller seems to be in her best shape ever after one year of promising competition results and numerous rockclimbing ticks. It’s the second female ascent of the route after Laura Rogora, and Eva is the third Austrian woman to reach the 9th grade after Angie Eiter and Babsi Zangerl. Here are Eva’s thoughts.

“My name is Eva Hammelmüller and I started climbing when I was 8 years old. As I was looking for new projects and Underground was completely different than any other rock climbing route I’ve ever tried, I wanted to challenge myself with this route. Underground is a historically important route and althought it didn’t really fit my style, it felt simply amazing to climb!
In total, it took me 11 tries to send the route, and even though I struggled a bit in the first crux, I am really happy with the progress I’ve made from each go to the next.
I’ve always loved to climb a lot outside, and I used the time without competitions during the pandemic to push my limits on hard rock climbs. For me, climbing outside is a nice and necessary change to competition climbing, and I simply love the process of projecting routes. Finding the right balance between comp and rock climbing is for me very important. My main goal regarding climbing is to get as strong as possible and to achieve good results in competitions as well as to climb many cool lines outside.“

Située près de la maison de Babsi à Bludenz, en Autriche, Lorüns est une falaise d’escalade sportive qui abrite des voies historiques vieilles de plusieurs décennies. Décrite comme un “point de rencontre” pour les anciennes et les jeunes générations de la communauté grimpante autrichienne, Lorüns occupe une place de choix dans la cœur de Babsi, d’autant plus que son partenaire Jacopo Larcher y a récemment réussi un projet légendaire vieux de 30 ans, établissant la voie la plus dure de la falaise avec “Sprengstoff”, 9a (qui signifie “explosif”). Malheureusement, Lorüns fait partie d’une zone appartenant à une entreprise de carrière locale et est sous une menace constante et toujours croissante de destruction. L’année dernière, Babsi s’est engagée à faire la deuxième ascension de “Sprengstoff”, en partie pour continuer à repousser ses limites, mais aussi pour utiliser la médiatisation de son ascension pour faire prendre conscience de la menace imminente sur cette falaise. Located near Babsi’s home in Bludenz, Austria, Lorüns is a sport climbing crag that’s home to decades’ old historical routes. Described as a “meeting point” for both the old and younger generations of the Austrian climbing community, Lorüns is close to Babsi’s heart, especially since her partner Jacopo Larcher recently climbed a legendary 30-year-old project, in turn establishing the crag’s hardest route—Sprengstoff (9a), meaning “Explosive” in English. Unfortunately, Lorüns is part of an area owned by a local quarry company and is under a constant and ever-increasing threat of destruction. This past year, Babsi committed herself to make Sprengstoff’s second ascent, in part to push her climbing, but also to use her ascent to drive awareness to the crag’s impending threat. Suite de la série vidéo “Committed” avec Babsi Zangerl ! Après le premier épisode dans “Sprengstoff” 9a à Löruns, voici un épisode en Italie dédié à la mythique voie de trad de la Valle dell’Orco, la fissure déversante de “Greenspit” ouverte par le Suisse Didier Berthod. La grimpeuse autrichienne avait profité de l’automne dernier pour essayer cette classique et malgré des coincements de mains compliqués, des bons plombs et des essais engagés Babsi a réussi à s’offrir la première ascension féminine de la voie. A voir ci-dessous !

“Greenspit” is a route of mythical status. Bolted and “defaced” as some traditionalists would say with green hangers (hence the route’s name), the route thwarted all suitors until the legendary swiss trad ace Didier Berthod chopped the bolts and made the first ascent placing natural pro. For Babsi Zangerl, “Greenspit” was a challenge always waiting in the wings … until thanks to Covid, the fall of 2020 found her home in Europe and not on El Cap. Babsi spent last fall in Italy’s famed Valle dell’Orco where she racked up and committed to the steep roof crack. And after enduring the runouts, whips, and painful hand jams, Babsi became the first woman to succeed on “Greenspit”. A must watch.

Martina Demmel fait partie des grimpeuses actuellement les plus prolifiques en matière d’escalade sportive en falaise. Après un hiver en Espagne avec un grand nombre de coches dont “Joe-cita”, son premier 9a à Oliana, Martina vient de réaliser “San Ku Kai” 8c+ à Entraygues (Briançonnais). Il s’agit de la seconde féminine de la voie après Anak Verhoeven en 2017.

“Cet endroit a toujours été spécial pour moi, principalement à cause du paysage magnifique qui l’entoure, de la rivière à proximité, mais aussi du toit ombragé en gneiss, ce qui me rendait encore plus heureuse d’y revenir chaque été ! J’ai spontanément décidé de donner quelques essais à cette kingline après la coupe du monde avec Yannick Flohe, mais comme il manquait encore un mouvement difficile avec un talon, je l’ai laissée de côté comme futur projet pour les prochaines semaines… Étonnamment, j’ai fait le mouvement manquant lors de mon essai suivant début août, directement en venant du sol avec un juste un court stop par la suite ! À partir de là, j’ai réalisé que cela pouvait vraiment être possible mais je me suis trompée car j’en attendais trop et je n’ai plus jamais atteint l’inversée sur les sessions suivantes… Heureusement j’ai trouvé une méthode beaucoup plus sûre en sautant même 2 mouvements pour atteindre la hauteur de mon meilleur essai à nouveau, mais tombant toujours un peu au-dessus. J’ai alors cherché des petits détails utiles, je me suis visualisée en train de réaliser les derniers mouvements pour ne pas devenir trop nerveuse pendant l’enchainement… Disons que je suis devenue vraiment nerveuse, j’avais peur de faire une erreur mais des conditions venteuses parfaites m’ont permis de clipper la chaîne de mon plus long projet jusqu’à présent lundi dernier (presque seulement mentalement car il y a uniquement 20 mouvements de résistance avec un risque élevé de faire des erreurs, en particulier en mettant les talons sur 75% des mouvements) !
La réalisation de ce bijou permet enfin de comprendre un peu le monde de la projection et ce que cela signifie de devenir fou obsédé par le fait que vos pensées ne font que tourner en rond autour d’un morceau de caillou !”

Martina Demmel is one of the most prolific climbers in the rock climbing community. After a winter in Spain with a large number of ticks including “Joe-cita”, her first 9a in Oliana, Martina has just completed “San Ku Kai” 8c + in Entraygues (Briançonnais). This is the second female on the route after Anak Verhoeven in 2017.

“This place always had been special for me mostly because of the stunning landscape around, the river nearby but also the shady ‘Gneiss’ roof for sure what made me even happier to come back there every summer! Spontaneously decided to give this kingline a few tries after the Worldcup with Yannick Flohe but as a tricky heelhook-move was still missing I left it beside as a future project for the next weeks…surprisingly did the missing move during the next attempt at the beginning of August directly while coming from the ground by only having a short hang afterwards! From then on, I realised that it really could be possible but this was the fault as I expected too much and never reached the undercling again the next sessions… luckily I found a much safer beta by even skipping 2 moves to reach the old highpoint again but still falling above, searching for more little helpful details, always visualising myself sticking the last moves to not get too nervous during the send. Let’s say, I got fricking nervous, scared to make a mistake but perfect windy conditions let me clipp the chains of my longest project so far last Monday (almost only mentally as there are 20 resistency moves with a high risk of doing mistakes especially while putting the heels on 75% of the moves)!
This gem finally let me understand the world of projecting a bit and what it means to get crazy obsessed that your thoughts are only turning circles around a piece of rock!“

Le champion autrichien Jakob Schubert vient de flasher son 3ème 8B+ bloc au pays avec “Anam Cara” à Silvretta, un bloc référence dans le niveau dans panneau très déversant proposant 5 mouvements basiques sur arquées. Ce bloc très pur avait même été ouvert par Bernd Zangerl en 2007 à 8C avant d’être revu à la baisse après quelques répétitions. Jakob avait déjà réussi flash les plus longs et résistants “Catalan Witness the fitness” à Cova del Ocell et “Never ending story” à Magic Wood. Il réalise un nouveau coup ici avec un bloc bien plus court suivi quelques minutes suivantes par un autre classique dur et court, “Memento” 8B à son 2e essai, après être passé pas loin du flash. Ci-dessous la vidéo de son exploit !

Austrian champion Jakob Schubert flashed his 3rd 8B+ boulder, at home with “Anam Cara” located in Silvretta. This famous testpiece offers 5 basic moves on crimps on a 50° overhang. This pure boulder was opened by Bernd Zangerl in 2007 and graded 8C, before being proposed in the 8B+ range after some repeats. Jakob also flashed “Catalan witness the fitness” in Cova del Ocell and “Never ending story” in Magic Wood. He strikes again in this style with this time a much shorter problem. To finish the day off, Jakob was close to flashing another testpiece with “Memento” 8B (2nd go). Here is the video of his feat!

Après “Lucifer” (8c+) à Red River Gorge en 2019, la grimpeuse allemande Solveig Korherr refait une nouvelle belle coche ! Solveig vient de réaliser son projet de l’année avec “La cabane au Canada” sur le site du Rawyl en Suisse. Cette voie proposée 9a avait été réalisée à vue par Adam Ondra en juillet 2013, devenant le second grimpeur à réaliser une telle perf’ après Alex Megos et “Estado critico”. C’est la 3ème ascension féminine de la voie après Julia Chanourdie et Kathy Choong, un dévers long de 30 mètres très déversant qui a été pas mal enchainé ces dernières années et dont certains répétiteurs pensent qu’elle pourrait valoir plutôt 8c+.

“Je n’aurai pas souhaité un meilleur endroit et une plus belle voie pour accomplir mon rêve à long terme ! Depuis que j’ai passé un peu de temps à Rawyl l’année dernière et que j’ai déjà gravi la voie “La cabane au Paradis” qui est la voisine de “La cabane au Canada”, partageant la même partie inférieure, j’ai su instantanément que je voulais revenir et grimper cette ligne parfaite !

Après être tombée plusieurs fois dans la partie supérieure l’année dernière et avoir pas mal lutté avec un mouvement qui était à faible pourcentage de réussite et loin pour moi, je doutais de moi-même sur ma capacité à réaliser cette partie depuis le sol après avoir déjà 25 mètres d’escalade difficiles dans mes bras.

Quand je suis revenue cette année, je voulais être bien préparée et j’ai réalisé un cycle d’entraînement plus long. La différence que j’ai ressentie était presque insensée – pouvoir récupérer beaucoup mieux dans la partie inférieure et trouver une nouvelle méthode dans le crux du haut. J’ai été totalement surprise que je puisse tenir la petite intermédiaire que j’ai utilisé pour le grand mouvement et atteindre la prise suivante d’une manière beaucoup plus statique et sûre.

Cela m’a donné beaucoup de confiance et je savais qu’avec un bon esprit que c’était totalement dans mes capacités et au final, je pense que cette voie n’aurait pas pu mieux me convenir !”

After her repeat of “Lucifer” (8c+), Red River Gorge in 2019, the German climber Solveig Korherr has struck again! She just completed her project of the year with “La cabane au Canada” at the Rawyl crag in Switzerland. This route, proposed at 9a, had been onsighted by Adam Ondra in July 2013, who then became the second climber to achieve such a feat, after Alex Megos and “Estado critico”. This is the 3rd female ascent of the route after Julia Chanourdie and Kathy Choong, a very steep 30m long overhang which has received a lot of repeats this last year, and which some repeaters think tends towards 8c+.
Here is the translation of Solveig’s comment on her Instagram account following her send.

“I couldn’t have wished for a better route and place to fulfill a longterm dream of mine!

Since I spent a bit of time in Rawyl last year and already climbed the route “La cabane au Paradis” which is the neighbour of “La cabane au Canada” and shares the same lower part, I knew instantly that I wanted to come back and climb this impeccable line!

After falling a few times in the upper part of Cabane au Canada last year and struggling quite a bit with one move which was very low-percentage and big for me, I was doubting myself if I could do this part from the ground after having already 25 meters of harder climbing in my arms.

When I came back this year I wanted to be well prepared and came straight out of a longer training cycle. The difference I felt was almost insane – being able to recover much better in the lower part and finding a new beta for the upper crux. I was totally surprised that the tiny intermediate I used for the big move I could now lock off and reach the next hold in a much more static and safe way.

That gave me a lot of confidence and I knew with a good mindest it’s totally in my ability and in the end, I think this route couldn’t have fit me better!“

Le top grimpeur allemand vient de réussir flash de “Intermezzo XY gelöst”, 9a, lors d’un court séjour à Plombergstein en Autriche (proche de Salzburg). C’est la 7ème ascension de cette voie libérée par Klem Loskot en 1997, une ligne très courte (12 m) et teigneuse à doigts avec un crux de départ autour du 8A+ bloc. Dans le même style, Alex avait déjà flashé “Underground” à Arco (8c+/9a) ou “The Path” (8b+ trad, Lake Louise, Canada). The top German climber just flashed “Intermezzo XY gelöst” 9a during a short stay in Plombergstein, Austria (near Salzburg). This is the 7th ascent of this route freed by Klem Loskot in 1997, a very short (12m) and fingery line with a starting crux around 8A+ boulder. In the same style, Alex had already flashed “Underground” in Arco (8c +/9a) or “The Path” (5.14 R, Lake Louise, Canada). La réalisation de cette performance aura permis de mettre en évidence un beau projet, “ZeroC02” dont l’italien Stefano Ghisolfi est aussi partie prenante : à chaque 9a réalisé, 5 arbres plantés.

Bien lui en pris puisque la semaine passée, Jakob a réussi la seconde ascension d’ “Alasha” (8c+/9a, crux sommital autour du 8B bloc) à Port de Soller, une lignée établie par le King Chris Sharma. Ensuite Jakob s’est naturellement tourné vers la célèbre arche d’Es Pontas à Santanyi, souvent essayée mais assez peu répétée. Depuis l’ouverture de Chris Sharma en 2007, seuls Jernej Kruder et Jan Hojer ont réussi à répéter la King line, célèbre pour son impressionnant jeté . “J’ai réalisé le jeté et je ne suis plus tombé ! commente Jakob sur son compte Instagram, qui empoche donc la 4ème ascension. Voici son retour sur son trip dans ce vlog avant la vidéo de sa répétition un peu plus tard… En un seul trip ici, Jakob aura répété les deux voies les plus dures de l’île et peut-être du monde en deep water ! Fort !

Austrian champion Jakob Schubert has just spent an holiday trip in Mallorca where he practiced pscicobloc. Things went fast: last week, Jakob managed the second ascent of “Alasha” (8c+/ 9a, topcrux around 8B boulder) at Port de Soller, a line established by King Chris Sharma. Then Jakob naturally went to the famous arch of Es Pontas in Santanyi, often tried but not often repeated. Since Chris Sharma’s first ascent in 2007, only Jernej Kruder and Jan Hojer have managed to repeat the King line, famous for his impressive dyno. “I stuck the dyno and didn‘t let go anymore!” comments Jakob on his Instagram account, grabbing the 4th ascent. L’opus retracera leur périple de 2 semaines à l’été 2020 où la cordée a réalisé la trilogie alpine en vélo, avec 3 grandes-voies historiques à la clé : “End of silence” des frères Huber, “Des Kaisers neue Kleider” de Stefan Glowasz et le “Silbergeier” de Beat Kammerlander dans les Rätikon. Pour amener un peu d’épice à l’aventure, ils amenèrent… leurs chiens, Koux et Bintche !

Last summer 2020, by bike and in only two weeks, Belgian climbers Nico Favresse and Seb Berthe climbed the famous Alpine Trilogy (composed of three historical 8b+ multipitch routes: Huber’s “End of Silence”, “Des Kaisers neue Kleider” established by Stefan Glowacz in the Wilder Kaiser massif in Austria and “Silbergeier” in Switzerland’s Rätikon put up by Beat Kammerlander). To add some more spices to the adventure, they brought… their dogs, Koux and Bintche! Here is the trailer of the full film “Alpine Trilogy, Doggy style” coming out soon. WARNING: this video is actually way more than a simple teaser: it is the video clip of the song Nico and Seb wrote during their trip to tell their story! We know, it is a bit late for the summer hit, but still, be ready to dance!

Après Sasha DiGiulian, Margo Hayes, Michaela Kiersch et Annie Chouinard, la grimpeuse allemande Solveig Korherr, 23 ans a réussi dimanche la cinquième ascension féminine de la classique dure de Red River Gorge, “Pure Imagination”. La grimpeuse allemande, âgée de 23 ans, qui a réalisé son premier 9a cet été avec “La Cabane au Canada”, est aussi une amoureuse du Red. En 2019, Solveig y avait déjà enchainé “Lucifer”, puis projeté “Pure Imagination”, une ligne qui était restée ancrée dans sa tête depuis 2 ans. Sur son compte Instagram, Solveig commente :

“Cette voie m’avait échappée la dernière fois que j’étais là. Pendant deux ans, j’ai été obsédée par l’idée de revenir. C’était une de mes lignes de rêve ! La première fois que je l’ai essayée, j’ai été époustouflée par le fait qu’il soit possible de tenir ces petites arquées dans un panneau aussi déversant. J’ai persévéré un peu et fait de rapides progrès, mais je n’étais pas assez en forme pour pouvoir empiler toutes les sections.
Il y a une semaine, nous sommes revenus dans le Red et j’ai tout de suite sauté sur “Pure Imagination”. J’étais motivée comme jamais ! J’ai enfin pu élever mon niveau. Je me sentais plus forte sur les prises, notamment dans la dernière partie très soutenue, mais j’en bavais pas mal encore au crux du bas avec cette fameuse arquée qui te coupe les doigts, aiguisée comme un couperet.
Dimanche, avec des conditions polaires et une bonne ambiance à la falaise, j’ai été capable d’enchainer la partie du bas et de clipper le relais ! Merci à tout le monde pour les encouragements !”

After Sasha DiGiulian, Margo Hayes, Michaela Kiersch and Annie Chouinard, Solveig Korherr became the 5th woman to clip the anchor of the mega classic “Pure Imagination”, Red River Gorge, USA. The German rockclimber, 23, who sent her first 9a this summer with “La Cabane au Canada” is also fond of the Kentucky mecca. On her previous trip in 2019, Solveig climbed “Lucifer”, then projected “Pure Imagination”, a line which has stayed in her mind for the last 2 years! She reports on Instagram:

“This was the one that got away last time that I was in the Red. I have been obsessed with coming back to it for the last two years. It is a dream line of mine! The first time I went up it, I was mind-blown at how it would even be possible to hold on to these tiny little crimps on such a steep panel.
I persevered a bit and made some very good progress back then but I just wasn’t quite fit enough to link all the sections.

One week ago we finally made it back to the Red and I immediately hopped on Pure Imagination. My psych was flying high over the moon! I could definitely tell that I levelled up. I felt much stronger on the holds especially in the sustained upper part but I was still struggling a bit with the lower crux with the famous crimp that cuts your fingers and that is as thin as the sharp edge of a knife.

On Sunday with some icy conditions and phenomenal vibes at the cliff, I was able to climb through the lower part and managed to clip the anchors! Thanks everybody for cheering on!“

Retrouvez dans la video la grimpeuse allemande Franzi Dietz sur les prises relatives minuscules de “Headcrash” (8c), un magnifique pilier déversant du secteur de Wasserstein dans la Frankenjura qu’elle a réussi à enchaine cet automne. Pas mal après 4 ans seulement d’escalade ! Libéré en 1993 par Werner Thon, cette voie est une des classiques du niveau du fameux berceau allemand de l’escalade sportive. A visionner ci-dessous !

Follow in the video below Franzi Dietz climbing “Headcrash”, an 8c with minute holds and a superb line located in Wasserstein, Frankenjura, she ticked this fall. Not so bad after 4 years of climbing! Freed in 1993 by Werner Thon, this route is a classic of the grade in sport climbing German’s cradle. Enjoy!

On le savait, Alex Megos était à Siurana depuis le début du mois. Le mutant allemand vient de réaliser la seconde ascension de “King Capella”, le 9b+ ouvert par le grimpeur britannique Will Bosi le printemps dernier qui se compose de 15 mètres complètement explosifs ! Voici le commentaire d’Alex via les réseaux sociaux :

“C’était la voie pour laquelle je suis venu à Siurana, après l’avoir checkée en mars, just après que Will Bosi a fait la première. Déjà à l’époque je m’étais rendu compte que cela me convenait plutôt bien, alors avec Jenya Kazbekova nous avons décidé de passer quelques semaines en Espagne pour essayer des voies dures. Neuf jours dans la voie et deux steaks plus tard, j’ai pu réaliser la première répétition de cette voie très courte et à doigts. J’ai aussi utilisé une méthode légèrement différente de Will, en prenant une très large pince, une méthode que je juge plus facile que celle de Will. Il ne pouvait pas faire le mouvement comme je l’ai réalisé donc je pense que c’est une préférence personnelle. Très curieux d’entendre de voir ce que d’autres en pensent ! “

Sans se prononcer sur le niveau, Alex réalise une nouvelle voie dure en escalade sportive, lui qui a déjà un impressionnant CV avec le premier 9a à vue de l’histoire, justement à Siurana, les ouvertures de voies en 9b et plus comme “Bibliographie”, “Perfecto Mundo”, “Fight Club”, ou encore une répétition de 9b référence comme “FRFM”.

As we know, Alex Megos has been in Siurana since the beginning of the month. The German beast has just made the second ascent of “King Capella”, the 9b + opened by British climber Will Bosi last spring, which offers 15 meters of completely explosive climbing! Here is Alex’s comment via social media:

“That was the route I came to Siurana for, after checking it out once last March, right after Will Bosi made the FA. Already back then I realized that it suites me pretty well so together with Jenya Kazbkova we decided to spend a few weeks in Spain to have enough time for hard routes. After nine days on the route and two splits later I could get the first repeat of this very short and very crimpy test piece. I also used slightly different beta than Will taking a very wide pinch, which felt a little easier to me than what Will did. He couldn’t do the move the way I did it though, so I guess it’s personal preference. Very curious to hear what other people think!“

Without commenting on the grade, Alex just did a new hard route, he who already has an impressive CV with the first 9a onsight, precisely in Siurana, the first ascent of routes in 9b and more like “Bibliographie”,” Perfecto Mundo “,”Fight Club “, or even a repetition of famous the 9b from Chris Sharma, ” FRFM “.

Sur place depuis quelques jours, le champion autrichien Jakob Schubert a fait parler la poudre aujourd’hui avec les répétitions de 2 voies très dures à Siurana : “King Capella”, immédiatement suivie de “La Capella”. La première a été libérée par Will Bosi ce printemps et “La Capella” ouverte par Adam Ondra il y a 10 ans. Pour les 2 lignes, Schubert suggère respectivement des décotations à 9b dur et 9a+. Ce qu’on commençait à pressentir concernant la répétition éclair d’Alex Megos il y a peu, ce dernier ne s’étant pas prononcé sur le niveau…

Voici le post laissé sur les réseaux par Jakob :
“A mon 4ème jour dans la voie j’ai été capable de réussir la seconde répétition de “King Capella” et 2 heures après j’ai pu me remettre un combat et réussir aussi “La Capella”, une ligne complètement indépendante, afin de finir une journée parfaite ! Merci pour l’émulation Alfons Dornauer !
Concernant les cotations, c’est difficile de statuer, en particulier dans des voies bloc mais je les vois un niveau plus facile que ce que suggéré précédemment… “King Capella” est plutôt 9b dur et “La capella” n’est pas plus dur que 9a+, mais ce ne sont que mes ressentis.”

On rappelle qu’avant ce faits d’armes Jakob Schubert avait déjà à son palmarès cinq 9b (“Stoking the fire”, “Neanderthal”, “Planta de Shiva”, “Fight or flight” et “El Bon combat”) et un 9b+ confirmé (“Perfecto Mundo”).

Arriving just a few days ago, Austrian champion Jakob Schubert was on fire today with the sends of 2 very hard routes in Siurana: “King Capella”, immediately followed by “La Capella”. The first ascent of “King Capella” was done by Will Bosi last Spring and “La Capella” opened by Adam Ondra a decade ago. For both lines Schubert suggests a downgrade, respectively 9b hard and 9a+. This confirms what we were beginning to assume after the recent send of Alex Megos of “King Capella” in a very quick time too, even though Alex did not give his opinion of the matter…
Here is the comment left by Jakob on social media:

On my 4th day on the route I was able to do the 2nd repetition of King Capella and just 2 hours later I could fight my way up La Capella (which is a completely separate line) as well to end a perfect day! Thanks for the psyche Alfons Dornauer!
Talking about the grades is difficult as always especially on these bouldery routes but I could see them both being one grade easier than previously suggested.. “King Capella” probably felt like a hard 9b to me and “La Capella” definitely didn’t feel harder than 9a+ but those are just my thoughts.

Remember that before this amazing journey Jakob ticked previously 5 9b (“Stoking the fire”, “Neanderthal”, “Planta de Shiva”, “Fight or flight” and “El Bon combat”) and one 9b+ (“Perfecto Mundo”).

Quelques jours après Jakob Schubert, c’est au tour d’Alex Megos de réussir le court 9b du secteur éponyme de Siurana, “La capella”. Il complète ainsi la trilogie de voies évaluées autour du 9b du secteur avec “King Capella” et “Furia de Jabali”

Voici son commentaire suite à sa croix :
“Je l’ai trouvé dure pour être honnête. J’ai eu pas mal de problèmes au mouvement d’inversée en photo et je suis tombé là pendant quelques jours. Il semblerait qu’il y ait un peu de confusion concernant les cotations de secteur Capella de Siurana donc je vais écrire un post pour montrer comment c’est dur et une question de ressenti personnel quand il s’agit d’évaluer la difficulté des voies. Mais qu’importe la cotation, c’était un challenge fun et sympa.

Etant donné qu’Alex est le seul avec Will Bosi à avoir répété les 3 voies les plus dures des lieux, son avis sera intéressant. Voici en bonus la vidéo de son ascension de “Furia de Jabali”. Concernant “La capella”, c’est la 6ème ascension de la voie après Ondra, Ghisolfi, Woods, Bosi et Schubert.

Few days after Jakob Schubert, ALex Megos signed a repeat of short and powerful 9b “La capella” in Siurana. he completes the trilogy of the 3 hard routes around 9b of this sector, with “Furia de Jabali” and “King Capella”.
Here is his comment:

“This one felt very hard to me if I’m honest. I had a lot of trouble with this undercling move on the picture and fell there quite a few days. Looks like there is a bit of confusion about the grades here at the Capella sector and I’ll also write a post to show how hard and how individual grading and difficulties of routes can be. No matter the grade though, it was fun and a good challenge.”

Since Alex is the only one with Will Bosi to have rehearsed the 3 toughest routes around, his opinion will be interesting. Here is as a bonus the video of his ascent of “Furia de Jabali”. Regarding “La capella”, it is the 6th ascent of the route after Ondra, Ghisolfi, Woods, Bosi and Schubert.

L’article Au tour d’Alex Megos pour La Capella ! – Alex Megos ticks La Capella! est apparu en premier sur Fanatic Climbing.

On avait laissé le crack Autrichien à Siurana après sa réalisation du triptyque du secteur “La Capella”. C’est à Eremo di San Paolo, Arco en Italie que Jakob Schubert refait surface ce début d’année avec une nouvelle réalisation éclair, celle de “Erebor” 9b. C’est déjà la 4ème ascension de la voie après Ghisolfi, Rogora et Ondra. Il est arrivé une petite mésaventure à Jakob, qui, a cassé une prise de pied en crochetage talon juste sous la chaine, ce qui lui a valu un beau vol plané. Il a empoché la voie à l’essai suivant en trouvant une méthode alternative plus dure à cet endroit, mais ne changeant pas le niveau.
Au vu de la facilité avec laquelle il répète les voies en 9a+ et 9b ici et là (9 réalisations en 9b et +) on serait curieux de le voir sortir des standards et de sa zone de confort en falaise, en essayant des voies plus dures, moins répétées ou proposer lui aussi des premières ascensions vraiment extrêmes. Qui vivre verra !

We left the Austrian machine in Siurana after his send of the triptych of the sector “La Capella”. He is back again this weekend in Eremo di San Paolo, Arco, Italy with a new quick send of “Erebor” 9b. It is already the 4th ascent of the route after Ghisolfi, Rogora and Ondra. A little mishap happened to Jakob, who broke a foothold while pressing hard on a right heelhook just below the anchor and as a result took a good whipper. He immediately found a new, harder, beta which in his eyes doesn’t change the grade, and climbed the route at his next go.
In view of Jakob’s margin when it comes to routes in the 9a+ and 9b range (9 sends of 9b and +) we would be curious to see him venture away from the established standards of rock climbing and out of his comfort zone, with harder routes that are also less repeated, or by claiming extreme first ascents. We will see in the future!
