Mattéo Soulé (14 ans) continue à empiler les voies dures à la maison avec la réussite ce week-end d’un nouveau 8c+ au Joncas (Hérault) “Nadesja”, quelques semaines après “Le bon, la brute et le manouche”.
“J’ai mis 4 séances à boucler la ligne. La voie propose une première section très dure qui m’a beaucoup posé problème avec un mono et un jeté, enfin un changement de main sur un carré plat puis une deuxième section dure sur des petites réglettes et pour finir un peu de rési sur des plats avec des grands mouvements.”
Il restera à Mattéo comme à son père de tenter de boucler le trilogie des 8c+ de la falaise avec “L’illusion ou les portes du 9ème degré” avant de peut-être justement d’aller tutoyer de plus près le niveau au-dessus !

“I did 4 sessions in the route before sending. The route shares a first section which caused me troubles with a mono and a jump, then a tricky match on a sloper before a final hard section one small crimps and a resistance finish with big moves on slopers.”

Un des meilleurs bloqueurs suisses Giuliano Cameroni vient de réaliser la 4ème ascension de “Off the wagon sit” 8C+ à Val Bavona. La première ascension a été faite par Raboutou, embrayé depuis par Webb et Woods. Après 6 ans de travail, Giuliano explique dans un long post sur Instagram qu’il a eu un déblocage mental et explique ce que le bloc lui a appris. A noter pour la petite histoire que pour rajouter de l’esthétisme, Giuliano est parti debout du sol en déplaçant la carriole plutôt qu’assis sur la charrette.
“Enfin! Une vraie beauté et un très long processus de 6 ans plein de hauts et de bas. Après avoir passé un certain temps sous le même bloc, de nouveaux sentiments commencent à apparaître: d’un côté, vous êtes évidemment frustré, surtout si vous êtes très proche, mais de l’autre, il y a un sentiment plus profond de connexion avec le lieu et le rocher, et ça commence à devenir une petite histoire d’amour. Vous commencez à réaliser chaque détail du rocher et appréhender le grain et la qualité du rocher. Le jour de l’ascension, un changement soudain s’est produit: j’étais assis en dessous comme toujours quand j’ai réalisé que j’avais le choix entre m’amuser ou réessayer désespérément. Cette prise de conscience m’a mis dans un grand état de flow sans vibrations négatives et sans peur d’échouer. Juste après avoir manqué le bac final, ce qui était mon meilleur essai, au lieu de me mettre en colère, j’ai commencé à rire. Je savais que j’approchais le bloc de la bonne façon, alors je suis resté calme et heureux. L’essai suivant, je l’ai grimpé. Tout s’est connecté et je me suis retrouvé au sommet. Un grand sentiment de joie m’a envahi et je me souviens m’être demandé comment cela pouvait arriver si facilement alors que je l’avais essayé pendant si longtemps.
Ce bloc m’a montré que l’escalade peut être bien plus que d’arriver au sommet et aussi plus que le processus dans le but de réussir. L’escalade est une expression du lien profond entre nous et la nature, entre notre âme et l’immobilité du moment. C’est très similaire au yoga, c’est pourquoi le mouvement parfait se trouve dans le moment présent. Seulement ici, lorsque toutes nos énergies sont concentrées sur ce que nous faisons, nous pouvons grimper de notre mieux, nous pouvons sentir ce que notre corps peut faire et ce que le mouvement fonctionne pour lui. Dans cette dimension intemporelle, nous réalisons notre vrai potentiel, nous nous rendons compte que nous pouvons grimper plus fort que ce qui semblait possible et donc briser les frontières de nos limites. On se rend également compte que l’escalade est une forme de méditation, un moyen direct de trouver le zen, un pont entre le physique et le non-physique.”
Shawn Raboutou – Off the wagon sit first ascent
TopSwiss climber Giuliano Cameroni just claimed the 4th ascent of “Off the wagon sit” in Val Bavona. The first ascent was claimed by Shawn Raboutou, followed by Webb and Woods. In a long Instagram post, Giuliano explains that he changed his mental state the day of the send after 6 years of trying.Note, for the story, that on the day of the send Giuliano elected to move the wagon aside and start from the ground, in a quest for added purity.
“Finally! A true beauty and a very long 6 years process full of ups and downs. After spending a certain amount of time under the same bloc new feelings start to appear: on one side you’re obviously frustrated, especially if you got very close, but on the other side there’s a deeper feeling of connection to the place and the rock, and it starts to become a little love story. You start to realize every detail of the boulder and how the grains and the quality of the rock exactly are. The day of the send, a sudden change happened: I was sitting underneath as always when I realized that I had a choice between having fun or desperately trying again. This realization put me in a great state of flow free of negative vibes and fear of failing. Right after I missed the final jug, which was my highpoint, and instead of getting mad I started laughing. I knew I was approaching the boulder the right way, so I stayed calm and happy. The next try I climbed it. Everything connected and all of the sudden I was standing on the top. A great sense of joy pervaded me and I remember wondering how it could happen so effortlessly when I had tried it for so long.
This boulder showed me that climbing can be much more than getting to the top and also more than the process with the goal of sending. Climbing is an expression of the deep connection between us and nature, between our soul and the stillness of the moment. It’s very similar to Yoga, that’s why the perfect motion is found in the present moment. Only here, when all our energies are focused on what we are doing, we can climb our best, we can feel what our body can do and what move works for it. In this timeless dimension we realize our true potential, we realize that we can climb harder than what seemed possible and therefore break the boundaries of our limits. We also realize that climbing is a form of meditation, a direct way to find zen, a bridge between the physical and the non-physical.“
Profitant d’un temps exceptionnellement venté pour la saison, le talentueux grimpeur belge Seb Berthe vient de réaliser la seconde ascension de la grande-voie extrême de Montserrat (Catalogne) “Arco Iris” 8c+, 200m. Libéré par Edu Marin en octobre dernier, le challenge propose 5 longueurs soutenues (6c, 8b+, 8c+, 8b, 8a+) avec des plombs monstrueux supérieurs à 20 mètres en cas de chute. Voici le ressenti de Seb.
“Arco Iris” est mon plus gros accomplissement en grande voie. Cette ancienne voie d’artif est relativement soutenue et incroyable : elle remonte une proue déversante sur 5 longueurs. Edu a rééquipé la voie avec des points très espacés de manière à ce que tenter la voie en libre ne gêne pas le fait de la grimper en artif, ce qui ne pose pas de problèmes ici à Montserrat. J’ai pris le plus gros plomb de ma vie dans cette voie, environ 25 mètres en essayant la longueur en 8c+. Cela rend les choses vraiment difficiles à gérer mentalement, mais je pense que je m’en suis bien sorti ! Malgré quelques parties avec du rocher fragile, les prises sont magnifiques et l’escalade superbe et bien rési ! Concernant le processus, j’ai découvert le mur et la voie ce printemps quand j’ai réalisé “Tarrago” à la journée (la voie des frères Pou juste à droite qui partage certaines parties avec celle-ci). Quand je suis allé dans “Arco Iris” je l’ai trouvé bien plus dure… C’était la première de ma vie que j’ai eu autant de difficultés en essayant une grande voie le premier jour. J’ai pu enchaîner la longueur en 8b+ mais la longueur clé en 8c+ était vraiment dure à appréhender physiquement, techniquement et mentalement, terriblement rési. J’ai dû quitter l’Espagne sans la croix. Cet été, je devais retourner en Espagne pour préparer un gros projet pour l’année prochaine, et j’étais assez proche de Montserrat. Malgré la chaleur j’y suis retourné et j’y ai trouvé de relativement bonnes conditions grâce au vent. Le 2ème jour dans la voie, je me suis fait botté les fesses une seconde fois mais j’ai compris que je pouvais faire cette voie en grimpant parfaitement bien. A mon 3ème jour dans la voie, je me suis senti de mieux en mieux dans la longueur clé et j’avais des méthodes parfaites. J’ai mis un essai parfait dans le 8c+ et je suis tombé complètement pété à quelques mouvements du relais ! Je me suis senti confiant et heureux : je savais que je pouvais le faire.
A la fin de la journée, j’étais en train de bosser des sections de cette longueur clé quand j’ai cassé une prise clé dans la partie finale, enlevant le seul repos possible dans cette section, rendant encore plus dure cette longueur… Les doutes sont rapidement revenus. Dimanche était mon 4ème jour de travail dans la voie, et je n’étais pas sûr de mes chances. Peu importe, j’ai mis un essai “a muerte” avec mon pote belge Baptiste Verdin en guise de compagnon de cordée. J’ai réalisé la première longueur relativement facilement par rapport aux autres fois. Pour mon premier essai dans le 8c+, je suis tombé là où j’ai cassé la prise la session précédente. J’ai retravaillé mes méthodes un petit peu et j’ai pris 2 heures de repos. À mon deuxième essai, j’ai très bien grimpé mais je me suis senti de plus en plus fatigué au fur et à mesure que j’avançais. J’ai atteint l’endroit où j’étais tombé précédemment et j’ai crié fort en faisant le mouvement. J’étais vraiment à la limite. Pendant les 10 derniers mètres, j’ai bataillé à chacun des mouvements, probablement une des plus gros combat de ma vie ! Les deux dernières longueurs, j’ai donné le meilleur. Malgré les bouteilles je les ai enchaînées directement. Après plus de 9 heures dans la voie nous étions en haut du mur. J’étais vraiment heureux et euphorique. J’ai mis en tout 4 jours pour réussir la voie, en réalisant en tête chaque longueur, et j’ai mis beaucoup de concentration mentale et d’énergie pour relever le défi qu’offre cette voie. Merci à Edu pour tout ce travail sur cette voie ! Concernant les cotations, de mon point de vue, la longueur clé est un vrai 8c+ (encore plus depuis que j’y ai cassé une prise), mais j’ai trouvé les autres longueurs plus faciles que ce qu’annonçait Edu. Je dirai 8b au lieu de 8b+ pour la L2, 8a+ au lieu de 8b pour la L4 et 8a au lieu de 8a+ pour la dernière longueur. Voyons ce qu’en penseront les grimpeurs suivants…
Taking advantage of exceptionally windy weather for the season, the talented Belgian climber Seb Berthe has just completed the second ascent of the extreme multi-pitch Montserrat (Catalonia) “Arco Iris” 8c+, 200m. Freed by Edu Marin last October, the challenge offers 5 sustained pitches (6c, 8b+, 8c +, 8b, 8a+) with potential falls up to 20 meters.
“Arco Iris” is my hardest achievement in multipitch climbing for sure. This ancient aid route is really sustained and incredible: it follows an overhanging corner for 5 pitches (6c, 8b+, 8c+, 8b, 8a+). Edu rebolted the line with huge runouts so the freeclimb does not bother the aid, which is really important there in Montserrat. I took the longest whipper of my life, about 25m, trying hard on the 8c+… This makes it really hard for the mental, but I think he did a great job there! Despite some loosy rock, the holds are crazy and the climbing is great and so pumpy! About the process, I discovered that wall and the route in spring when I climbed “Tarrago” in a day (The route from the Pou brothers just on the right that shares some parts). Then I went for “Arco Iris”, and it felt so much harder… This was the first time in my life I had so much troubles in a multipitch on my first day: I could send the first 8b+ pitch but the crux pitch felt desperatly hard physically, technically and mentally, and sooo pumpy. I had to leave Spain with this route undone…
This summer, I had to come back to Spain to prepare a big project for next year, and was staying pretty close from Montserrat. Despite the warm conditions, I had to go again and I actually discovered pretty good conditions (quite windy) On the 2nd day on the route, I got my ass kicked a second time but found out that I could send this beast with perfect climbing from myself. On my 3rd day on the route, I felt better and better on the pitch, and had my betas perfectly. I gave a perfect go on the 8c+ and fell completely pumped few moves from the anchor! I was so happy and psyched: I knew I could do it.
At the end of the day, as I was working on some sections of the crux pitch, I broke a key hold of final part and it took off the only rest there. I think it makes the pitch significantly harder… Doubts came back. Sunday was my fourth day working the route, and I was’nt sure I had a chance this day. Anyway, I went “a muerte” with my belgian friend Baptiste Verdin as belayer and partner. I sent the first pitch pretty easily compared to the previous times. On my first go on the 8c+, I fell where I broke the holds the last time. I worked on the beta a bit more and took 2 hours of rest. On my second try, I climbed really well but felt more and more tired while progressing on the route. I reached the point where I fell before and shout loudly while doing the move. I really was at the limit. During the last 10m, I fought hard at every move, probably one of the biggest fight of my life! On the two following pitches, I gave my best. Despite the pump I sent them directly. After about 9 hours on the route we were on the top of the wall I was so psyched and happy about it! In total, I spent 4 days to send the route (leading every pitches) and put quite a lot of mental focus and energy to overcome the challenge that the route offers. Thanks to Edu for the work on this route! About the grades, in my opinion, the crux pitch felt well and truly 8c+ (even more after I broke the hold), but the other pitches might be a bit easier than what Edu said: I would say 8b instead of 8b+ for the second pitch, 8a+ Instead of 8b for the fourth pitch and 8a instead of 8a+ for the last pitch. Let’s see what the following climbers will think about it…
Martina Demmel fait partie des grimpeuses actuellement les plus prolifiques en matière d’escalade sportive en falaise. Après un hiver en Espagne avec un grand nombre de coches dont “Joe-cita”, son premier 9a à Oliana, Martina vient de réaliser “San Ku Kai” 8c+ à Entraygues (Briançonnais). Il s’agit de la seconde féminine de la voie après Anak Verhoeven en 2017.
“Cet endroit a toujours été spécial pour moi, principalement à cause du paysage magnifique qui l’entoure, de la rivière à proximité, mais aussi du toit ombragé en gneiss, ce qui me rendait encore plus heureuse d’y revenir chaque été ! J’ai spontanément décidé de donner quelques essais à cette kingline après la coupe du monde avec Yannick Flohe, mais comme il manquait encore un mouvement difficile avec un talon, je l’ai laissée de côté comme futur projet pour les prochaines semaines… Étonnamment, j’ai fait le mouvement manquant lors de mon essai suivant début août, directement en venant du sol avec un juste un court stop par la suite ! À partir de là, j’ai réalisé que cela pouvait vraiment être possible mais je me suis trompée car j’en attendais trop et je n’ai plus jamais atteint l’inversée sur les sessions suivantes… Heureusement j’ai trouvé une méthode beaucoup plus sûre en sautant même 2 mouvements pour atteindre la hauteur de mon meilleur essai à nouveau, mais tombant toujours un peu au-dessus. J’ai alors cherché des petits détails utiles, je me suis visualisée en train de réaliser les derniers mouvements pour ne pas devenir trop nerveuse pendant l’enchainement… Disons que je suis devenue vraiment nerveuse, j’avais peur de faire une erreur mais des conditions venteuses parfaites m’ont permis de clipper la chaîne de mon plus long projet jusqu’à présent lundi dernier (presque seulement mentalement car il y a uniquement 20 mouvements de résistance avec un risque élevé de faire des erreurs, en particulier en mettant les talons sur 75% des mouvements) ! La réalisation de ce bijou permet enfin de comprendre un peu le monde de la projection et ce que cela signifie de devenir fou obsédé par le fait que vos pensées ne font que tourner en rond autour d’un morceau de caillou !”

Martina Demmel is one of the most prolific climbers in the rock climbing community. After a winter in Spain with a large number of ticks including “Joe-cita”, her first 9a in Oliana, Martina has just completed “San Ku Kai” 8c + in Entraygues (Briançonnais). This is the second female on the route after Anak Verhoeven in 2017.
“This place always had been special for me mostly because of the stunning landscape around, the river nearby but also the shady ‘Gneiss’ roof for sure what made me even happier to come back there every summer! Spontaneously decided to give this kingline a few tries after the Worldcup with Yannick Flohe but as a tricky heelhook-move was still missing I left it beside as a future project for the next weeks…surprisingly did the missing move during the next attempt at the beginning of August directly while coming from the ground by only having a short hang afterwards! From then on, I realised that it really could be possible but this was the fault as I expected too much and never reached the undercling again the next sessions… luckily I found a much safer beta by even skipping 2 moves to reach the old highpoint again but still falling above, searching for more little helpful details, always visualising myself sticking the last moves to not get too nervous during the send. Let’s say, I got fricking nervous, scared to make a mistake but perfect windy conditions let me clipp the chains of my longest project so far last Monday (almost only mentally as there are 20 resistency moves with a high risk of doing mistakes especially while putting the heels on 75% of the moves)! This gem finally let me understand the world of projecting a bit and what it means to get crazy obsessed that your thoughts are only turning circles around a piece of rock!“

The 3rd female ascent of “Jade”, famous crimpy V14 located in RMNP (Colorado) has been completed yesterday by Ashima Shiraishi with an impressive no gravity day: “Jade” V14, “Riddles in the Park” V12, “Golden Rows of Flows” V11 and “Blood Money stand” V10! The video of the repeat can be watched here. Remember Ashima Shiraishi climbed the first V15 proposition in the world with “Horizon” in 2016 at 14 years old.

La suissesse Kathy Choong vient de réaliser son projet de l’été en clippant le relais de la superbe voie “Helix au pays des merveilles” 8c+ au Pic St-Loup. C’est la seconde ascension féminine de la voie après sa compatriote Nina Caprez 7 ans plus tôt. Voici son commentaire :
“Il s’agit d’une super belle et longue voie très déversante, avec un mouv’ difficile dans le bas, suivi d’une partie résistante avec un deuxième crux au 3/4 de la voie qui m’a donné finalement du fil à retordre. Ensuite la voie se termine sur d’incroyables colonnettes (où tu peux encore bien te la coller). Je suis venue en juillet et j’ai tout de suis adoré la voie ! Mais au début je n’avais pas du tout le physique nécessaire pour aligner les mouv’ et je m’arrêtais à chaque dégaine. Il m’a fallu aussi du temps pour comprendre le mouv’ bloc du bas de la voie et caler une bonne méthode dans la section du haut, n’arrivant pas à utiliser la méthode normale avec ma taille de naine aux bras de T-Rex ! Après être tombée au dernier mouvement difficile le dernier jour de mon premier séjour, j’ai donc du revenir en août quelques jours pour terminer la voie. Des températures toujours aux alentours des 30 degrés, j’ai bien sûr attendu le dernier jour de mon second séjour pour finalement passer ce deuxième crux, me battre à chaque mouvement et finalement réussir la voie grâce à un petit vent salvateur. Comme à chaque fois, la pression de la dernière chance m’a permise de tout donner ! A propos de la cotation, j’ai entendu que certains grimpeurs la décotaient. Je dirais que c’est une voie de mon style (endurance) et pourtant j’ai quand même mis pas mal d’essais (en partie en raison du mouv’ très bloc dans la première partie et de la méthode de nain qui ajoute un mouv’ dans le crux du haut). Difficile à dire mais je dirais que la cotation est juste (si je compare par exemple à “La Ligne Claire” ou “Southern Smoke” que j’ai aussi réalisé). A noter que je n’ai pas utilisé de genouillères, n’étant pas indispensable avec mes méthodes. Bref, comme d’habitude une discussion qui n’est pas si importante pour moi au vue de la beauté de la ligne, du plaisir d’avoir fait un grand combat physique et mentale et des super moments passés à la falaise avec une belle équipe ! Merci à eux pour les encouragements et les bons moments, ça aide tellement dans un projet difficile d’avoir la chance d’être entourée d’une belle équipe.”

Swiss top climber Kathy Choong just completed her summer project with a repeat of one of Pic St-Loup’s gem “Helix au pays des merveilles” 8c+. Kathy is the second woman to climb the route, 7 years after her compatriot and friend Nina Caprez.Kathy’s comment below:
Yeah, finally manage to send “Hélix au pays des Merveilles” 8c+. What a beautiful line! I was desperate for the temperature not to drop below 30 degrees as I had only one more day left before leaving, but as always last chance pressure and a little wind gave me just enough to make an intense fight until the last move! I’ve heard that some climbers downgraded it. I’d say it’s a route that suits my style (endurance) but I still needed a lot of attempts to clip the chains (partly due to a very bouldery move in the first part and a slightly more difficult method for short people in the top crux )! It’s always difficult to give a grade of a route close to your max level, my perception is maybe also distorted by the current heat or I’m just not strong enough but I don’t think I would down grade it I didn’t use a knee pad, not being essential with my betas. Anyway a discussion that is not so important for me in comparison with the beauty of the line, the feelings to have surpassed myself again physically and mentally and the great moments spent at the crag with a great team! Thanks to them for the support and the good times, it’s so important and means so much to me !”
Dans cette jolie vidéo, Nalle Hukkataival continue de développer un spot de deep water solo en Finlande, précisément à Punkaharju, à 4 heures de voiture d’Helsinki, au bord du lac Saimaa. Il ouvre une nouvelle ligne dure en 8c, nommée “El Tippa tapa”. Située sur une planche en granite d’une quinzaine de mètres de haut à la friction assez incroyable, cette ligne n’est autre qu’une variante de sortie de droite de “Kesä Turkki” (8c) ouverte par Nalle il y a quelques années. “El Tippa tapa” propose une escalade très athlétique, avec en guise de crux sommital une incroyable fissure déversante ! In this nice video, Nalle Hukkataival continues to develop a deep water solo crag in Finland, precisely Punkaharju, 4 hours’ drive from Helsinki on the shore of Lake Saimaa. In it we witness the first ascent of a new hard line, “El Tippa tapa” 8c on a pretty incredible frictioney granite overhanging board, around 15 meters-high. The route is a right exit variation of “Kesä Turkki”, another DWS 8c opened by Nalle some years ago. The crux of “El Tippa tapa” is located at the very top and offers a very athletic climb to get out of an insane crack. Watch it below!
Médaillée d’argent aux JO de Tokyo début août, la compétitrice japonaise Miho Nonaka a passé la suite de son été à Céüse auprès de son copain, le top grimpeur américain Sean Bailey. Miho a profité de son séjour pour prendre de l’expérience en milieu naturel, passant du niveau 7c+ à 8c+ en l’espace de quelques semaines, avec la réussite récente de “Mr Hyde” (8c+) !
Miho commente son séjour via son compte Instagram : “Pendant longtemps, depuis que j’ai décidé de me concentrer sur les compétitions, je n’ai jamais pensé pouvoir trouver un projet en escalade sportive qui me passionne autant et que j’aurais l’opportunité d’essayer. D’aussi loin que je me souvienne, 7c+ était la cotation la plus difficile que j’avais réalisé dehors. Donc je suppose que j’ai sauté un chiffre ! J’ai le sentiment du devoir accompli. Merci à Sean Bailey pour tout ce que tu m’as appris. J’ai appris un large éventail de choses de ce voyage ! “
A noter que les croix ne sont peut-être pas finies à Céüse, Sean Bailey étant tombé tout en haut de “Bibliographie” cette semaine. Peut-être une troisième ascension à venir très bientôt…
Olympic silver medalist in Tokyo this August, Japanese competitor Miho Nonaka spent the rest of her summer in Céüse with her boyfriend, the top American climber Sean Bailey. Miho took advantage of their stay to gain experience in a natural environment, going from 7c+ to 8c+ in the space of a few weeks, with the recent success of “Mr Hyde” (8c +)!
Here is what she said on her Instagram account: “For a long time since I decided to focus on competitions, I never thought that I would find a project in sport climbing that excites me so much and would actually get a chance to try. As far as I can remember, 7c+ was the hardest grade I’ve done in outdoor sport climbing. So I guess I skipped a number grade? Huge accomplishment I feel like. Thanks Sean Bailey for all that you taught me. I’ve learned a wide range of things from this trip.”

En mai dernier, Claudia Ghisolfi (25 ans), la petite sœur de Stefano Ghisolfi, réussissait son premier 8c+ avec la voie historique “Noia” à Andonno, dont l’ascension fait l’objet d’un volet des “Climbing Diaries” de son frère. Du coup, cette première ne vient pas seule: c’est aussi la première fois que la chaine Youtube de Stefano se consacre à quelqu’un d’autre que lui (il en rit lui-même)! Il s’agit d’une voie très importante de la péninsule : le premier 8c+ italien libéré par Severino Scassa en février 1993 ! Suivez cette video sur Claudia dans les 65 mouvements de pure résistance de “Noia”, une voie qu’elle a bossée pendant toute la période hivernale, avec un processus débuté à l’automne 2020.
Last May Claudia Ghisolfi (25 years old), the sister of Stefano Ghisolfi, managed to send her first 8c+ with the historical route “Noia” in Andonno: check the video that her brother has made of it as part of his “Climbing Diaries”. It is therefore a first in more ways than one: it is indeed the first time that Stefano dedicates an episode of his Youtube channel to someone other than himself (a fact he laughs at himself). This is a very important route for the peninsula: the first Italian 8c+, first ascended by Severino Scassa in February 1993! Follow Claudia in the 65 movements of power resistance that is “Noia”, a route she has worked on during the last winter period, having started the process in the fall of 2020.

Ryuichi Murai vient de libérer une nouveau gros projet et d’ouvrir “Nexus” à Shiobara, un enchainement de 40 mouvements qu’il propose 8C+. Autant le passage est sûrement d’une difficulté inouïe et le plus dur jamais réalisé par Ryuchi dans ce style, autant nous nous posons la question du sens de proposer une cotation bloc plutôt qu’une cotation voie pour définir le niveau d’un effort aussi long qui est clairement dans une filière résistance. Cette interrogation vaut aussi pour des blocs se voulant étalons de la haute-difficulté comme “Horizon”, “Wheel of Life”, “Wheel of Chaos” ou encore “Grand Illusion”. Mais peu importe. Voici ci-dessous le commentaire de l’intéressé laissé sur son compte Instagram :
“Finalement ! Je suis super heureux d’avoir fait mon grand projet “Uma extension”. La difficulté de cette ligne a été, outre le fait d’empiler un grand nombre de mouvements à haute intensité de force, d’accumuler du stress lié à des petits écueils et des erreurs qui affectaient grandement mes performances. Par conséquent, c’était un challenge non seulement pour l’endurance, mais aussi pour ce qui est de la réalisation parfaite des mouvements.
Après en avoir compris la logique, j’ai revu en profondeur tous les mouvements et je les ai répété jusqu’à ce que mon corps puisse les réaliser sans réfléchir. Hier, tous les morceaux se sont assemblés parfaitement, et un puzzle vieux de 5 ans a finalement été complété.
Le bloc fait 40 mouvements et je suis un peu troublé d’annoncer une cotation bloc. Cependant je propose V16 parce que je trouve cet enchainement plus dur que d’autres lignes du même style “Babel” (8C) à Shiobara et “In search of time lost” (8C) à Magic Wood. J’aimerais le comparer à “Grand Illusion” un jour. Au projet suivant !”
Ryuchi Murai is one of the strongest Japanese outside boulderers with Ryohei Kameyama or the legend Dai Koyamada, with plenty of 8C’s already under his belt and the first ascent of extreme boulders like “United” 8C+. Ryuichi has just freed a new big project and opened “Nexus” in Shiobara, a 40 movements line with an 8C+ grade proposition. As much as the passage is surely incredibly difficult and the hardest ever made by Ryuchi in this style, we ask ourselves the question of the meaning of proposing a bouldering grade rather than a rockclimbing grade to define the level of such a long effort which is clearly in a resistance testpiece. This question also applies to boulders that want to be standards of high-difficulty in the bouldering world like “Horizon”, “Wheel of Life”, “Wheel of Chaos” or even “Grand Illusion”. But whatever. Here is Ryuchi’s comment on his Instagram account:
“Finally! Super psyched to have done my long standing project “UMA extension”.
The difficulty in achieving this line was that in addition to the large number of moves and high strength, the accumulation of mental stress due to slight squeaks and mistakes greatly affected performance. Therefore, it was important not only for endurance but also for how sophisticated the movement could be.
After understanding the logic, I thoroughly reviewed all the moves again and practiced repeatedly until my body naturally started to move without thinking. And yesterday, all the pieces fit perfectly, and the five-year puzzle was finally completed.
This line consists of nearly 40 moves and I was worried about the boulder grade. However, I propose V16 because it felt harder than the similar lines “Babel” (V15/8C) in Shiobara and “In search of time lost (V15/8C)” in Magic Wood. Wanna compare it with “Grand Illusion” someday. On to the next project.“
Incroyable performance à la falaise d’Oliana en Catalogne, où la mutante slovène Janja Garnbret vient de réaliser la classique de continuité de 50 mètres “Fish Eye” 8c à vue ! Et cela tombe bien, car nous étions sur place et nous avons pu profiter du spectacle !

Pourtant la championne olympique n’était pas en réussite depuis le début de son séjour catalan… La veille, pour sa première journée sur place, Janja a subi des échecs cuisants à vue dans “Humildes pa casa” et “Gorilas en la Niebla”, toutes deux 8b+, en tombant bien bas dans ses tentatives. Ce midi, pour son 2ème jour, Janja retombe encore en fin d’échauffement dans “Humildes pa casa”, déclarant manquer de volume. Un bon repos plus tard la voilà remobilisée pour tenter “Fish Eye”.
La première partie de la voie, un 8a+ athlétique, ne sera qu’une formalité, et c’est fraîche que Janja exécute le premier pas de bloc du milieu de voie, gravi parfaitement, sans erreur de lecture et avec pile la bonne intensité. Quelques délayages plus tard et la voici déjà dans la partie haute plus conti de la voie, à presque 40 mètres de haut juste sous le pas de bloc à doigts qui en aura fait tomber plus d’un. C’est d’ailleurs la forme de la prise de ce crux, un bidoigt évasé et rond, qui donne son nom à la voie.
Après une hésitation dans le pas où Janja, à l’envers, s’est payée le luxe de revenir quelques secondes au semi-repos précédent, la slovène franchit cette dernière difficulté sous les encouragements et s’en va clipper le relais ! D’une impressionnante facilité, elle avouera quand même avoir pris les bouteilles !

Abordable à vue car dans la filière continuité mais jamais remise en question malgré les (très) nombreux ascensionnistes, “Fish Eye”, équipée et libérée par Chris Sharma en 2009 nous semble une référence dans le niveau. Il pourrait donc s’agir du premier 8c à vue féminin de l’histoire, puisqu’avant Charlotte Durif avait annoncé “Les rois du pétrole” en 2010, voie désormais décotée à 8b+. 10 femmes avaient jusqu’alors réalisé du 8b+ à vue : Katie Brown (“Omaha Beach”), Josune Bereziartu (“Hidrofobia”), Charlotte Durif (“Les rois du pétrole”), Maja Vidmar (“Humildes pa casa”), Sacha DiGiulian (“Omaha Beach”), Kajsa Rosén (“T1 full-equip”), Laura Rogora (“L-mens”), Anak Verhoeven (“Gorillas en la niebla”), Martina Demmel (“Humildes pa casa”) et Vita Lukan (“Geminis”), mais personne n’avait réalisé un 8c.
Il y a quelques années, la championne Slovène avait déjà réalisé de belles croix à Santa Linya avec “Rollito Sharma extension” et “La Fabelita” 8c flash mais n’avait jamais réalisé ce niveau à vue. Janja restant encore quelques jours sur place, il se peut qu’on assiste à d’autres exploits. Comme on reste aussi, on vous tiendra bien évidemment informés !

Incredible! Two days ago in Oliana, Catalonia, Spain, Janja Garnbret has just onsighted the 50m-long endurance classic that is “Fish Eye” 8c! And as luck would have it, we were there too and relished in the Janja show!
And yet, the Slovenian Olympic champion wasn’t quite firing since getting in Catalonia… Yesterday, on her first day at the crag, Janja fared relatively badly in her onsight attempts of ‘Humildes pa casa’ and ‘Gorillas en la Nieba’, both 8b+, as she fell low down. At lunchtime today, for her second day, Janja falls again in ‘Humildes pa casa’, saying she’s short on endurance. A good rest later though, she’s got the bit between her teeth again and walks to ‘Fish eye’.
The first part of the route, a punchy 8a+, poses no problems, and when the time comes to tackle the first boulder crux in the middle of the line, Janja is perfect: she ascends flawlessly, without mistakes and just the right intensity. A few shake-outs later and she finds herself in the upper part of the route, 40 meters off the deck, just under the last, fingery, boulder, which has caused many a dispiriting heartache with this slopy twofingerpocket which inspired the name of the route.

After hesitating in the said boulder where she misreads a sequence, the Slovenian climbs back down to the half-rest below, then, helped by the cheers, finally powers through the last section and clips the chains! Despite her impressive ease, Janja admitted being failry pumped!
Feasible since the route is endurance-based, its grade has never been put in doubt by its many repeaters and “Fish Eye” (bolted and freed by Chris Sharma in 2009) seems to us to be a benchmark in that difficulty. This could therefore turn out to be the first female 8c onsight in history, since Charlotte Durif’s ‘Les rois du pétrole’ (2010), although proposed at 8c, has long since been downgraded to 8b+. 10 women have so far onsighted 8b+: Katie Brown (‘Omaha Beach’), Josune Bereziartu (‘Hidrofobia’), Charlotte Durif (‘Les rois du pétrole’), Maja Vidmar (‘Humildes pa casa’), Sacha DiGiulian (‘Omaha Beach’), Kajsa Rosén (‘T1 full-equip’), Laura Rogora (‘L-mens’) Anak Verhoeven (‘Gorillas en la niebla’), Martina Demmel (‘Humildes pa casa’) and Vita Lukan (‘Geminis’). But no woman had done so at 8c.
Some years ago, Slovenian champion flashed some 8c’s in Santa Linya with “Rollito Sharma extension” and “La Fabelita” but never onsighted 8c. Deux jours après avoir réalisé “Fish Eye” à vue, news que nous vous relations cet après-midi, nous avons été témoins d’un autre exploit de la part de la championne olympique Janja Garnbret à Oliana aujourd’hui. En forme olympique, Janja réalise cette fois le 8c “American Hustle” à vue, au prix d’un gros combat ! En guise d’échauffement, Janja était allée visiter le bas de “La Dura dura” le 9b+ mythique de la falaise et s’est payée le luxe de faire le fameux crux avec le jeté explosif vers un bidoigt fuyant en épaule !

Après cette fin d’échauffement plutôt bloc, la championne slovène se rabat sur nos conseils sur “American Hustle” 8c de conti de 50 mètres équipé par Sam Elias en 2014 en plein milieu du mur central de la falaise, juste à gauche de “Fish Eye”.
La voie se décompose en un 8a+ d’approche à doigts puis physique, avant un semi-repos sur une écaille et une section très résistante d’une quinzaine de mouvements au milieu qui constitue le crux. Elle se finit par une section plus conti de 20 mètres, environ 8a/+, qui alterne pas de blocs bien toniques avec des mouvements à prise de risques et bonnes décontractions. Après un bon combat dans la section du milieu, grimpant sans faire d’erreurs majeures de lecture et ayant la marge de délayer partout, Janja a eu une hésitation ensuite sur un mouvement puissant sur inversées nécessitant de l’engagement. Mais une fois cette difficulté passée, elle s’est hissée sans encombre vers le relais pour réaliser son 2ème 8c à vue du séjour ! Nous avons filmé une partie du run du sol, et il reste encore un jour de grimpe à Janja, d’autres infos à venir bientôt !

Two days after her onsight of “Fish Eye”, we witnessed another feat by Olympic Gold Medalist Janja Garnbret in Oliana today. Janja was at it again and sent “American Hustle” 8c onsight after a huge fight! To finish her warm-up, Janja visited the lower part of mythical “La Dura dura” 9b+ and managed to stick the dyno to the 2-finger gaston! Crazy!
After this somewhat bouldery end to her warm-up, the Slovenian champion decided to try “American Hustle”, a 50-meter stamina 8c bolted by Sam Elias in 2014, in the center of the crag.
The route could be described as a fingery then pumpy 8a+ start before a little rest on a flake, leading to a physical resistance section in the middle by way of crux. Then comes the stamina 8a+ finish with some powerful and risky moves, separated by good rests.
After a good fight in the middle, climbing without mistakes and being able to shake out on every move, Janja hesitated at the deadpoint move on underclings. But once she climbed this section, Janja looked comfortable in the crimpy finish to the anchor and bagged her second 8c onsight of the trip! We filmed most of her fight from the ground (soon to be uploaded to our Youtube channel) and don’t forget, Janja still has one climbing day here, so more to come soon we hope!

Après les prouesses de Vita Lukan et Janja Garnbret en Espagne, voici que la jeune Sara Copar, 16 ans, championne du Monde cadette de difficulté, fait parler d’elle en falaise ! Sara vient de réussir son premier 8c+ au pays avec “Histerija”, une classique du mur central de Misja Pec ! La voie fait 32 mètres de long, avec un départ sur colos de 15 mètres et un repos, puis un furieux pas de bloc sur pinces, arquées et inversées avant un final résistant sur réglettes. C’est la 4ème féminine de la voie après Natalija Gros, Mina Markovic et Vita Lukan.
The Slovenian women are definitely in good shape this fall! After the feats of Vita Lukan and Janja Garnbret in Spain, now it’s the turn of young Sara Copar, 16, recently lead Youth A world champion to crush at the crag! Sara just completed her first 8c+ at home with “Histerija”, a classic route located in the central part of the Misja Pec crag! The route is 32 meters long, with a 15-meter start on tufas followed by a rest, then a furious bouldery section on pinches, crimps and underclings before a resistant final on crimps. It is the 4th female ascent of the route after Natalija Gros, Mina Markovic and Vita Lukan.

Suite à la réalisation à vue de “Fish Eye” et “American Hustle”, tous deux 8c, par Janja Garnbret la semaine passée à Oliana, nous sommes allés poser quelques questions à la championne olympique. En bonus sous l’interview, on vous offre la vidéo de Janja à vue dans les principales difficultés de “American Hustle”.
– Quel était l’objectif de ta venue à Oliana ? Je voulais essayer quelques voies et voir comment je me sentais en grimpant ici et je voulais aussi voir ce que je pouvais donner à vue.
– Comment t’es venue l’idée d’essayer “Fish Eye” ? Je ne pensais pas vraiment essayer un 8c à vue, mais plus tard ce jour là j’ai juste décidé de mettre un essai dans “Fish Eye”. Pas de pression, juste de l’escalade.
– Comment ça s’est passé pendant le à vue ? Peux-tu décrire ton escalade ? Je me sentais super bien, relâchée et concentrée. Je n’ai pas paniqué si je ne comprenais pas à une séquence tout de suite, je me sentais bien. Je pense que j’ai grimpé assez vite, et cela était assez approprié. J’ai pris du temps dans la dalle finale car il n’y avait pas trop de magnésie et je ne voulais vraiment pas me la coller.
– Tu étais pétée ? Quand as-tu compris que tu pouvais la faire ? Dans la première partie difficile je n’étais pas si pétée. Jusqu’au dernier bac de la partie déversante j’ai grimpé très vite, je me suis reposée là où j’ai pu et à cette prise-là, j’ai compris que je pouvais la faire. Mais la dernière partie était assez piégeuse donc j’aurais pu tomber partout, j’ai réussi à rester calme et à trouver les séquences.
– Avais-tu essayé de réaliser un 8c à vue avant ? Tu penses comme moi que tes limites sont plus loin ? Je n’ai jamais essayé de réaliser un 8c à vue, avant j’avais fait des essais flashs dans les 8c, ou alors j’avais dû les travailler un petit peu avant de les enchainer. Mais maintenant je pense que si je trouve une voie qui me convient bien je peux essayer de réaliser à vue quelque chose de plus dur.
– Peux tu décrire ton à vue d'”American Hustle” ? Un gros combat ? Ma décision était globalement la même qu’avec “Fish Eye”. J’ai juste décidé d’y mettre un essai, sans pression. De mon point de vue c’est plus dur que “Fish Eye” et j’ai eu à batailler un peu plus. J’étais super relax et j’ai pu réussir les mouvements assez rapidement. Ce n’était pas si évident, et j’ai vraiment dû me battre dans certaines parties de la voie.
– Peux tu comparer “Fish Eye” et “American Hustle” ? Quelle voie as-tu trouvé la plus dure ? Aha j’ai déjà répondu dans la question précédente. Je dirai que “Fish Eye” est plus facile et aussi plus triviale dans la partie dure déversante, mais la partie du haut est piégeuse. D’un autre côté, “Amercan Hustle” est plus dure, plus puissante et intense mais la partie du haut est très belle et plus évidente. J’étais assez perdue dans certaines parties mais j’étais plus confiante dans le haut. Mais de mon point de vue “American Hustle” a été plus dure à faire à vue.
– Tu es allée repérer “La dura dura” et “Joe mama”. Reviendras-tu pour les essayer à fond ? Ou as-tu des projets à la maison ? Je vais vraiment devoir revenir ! Finir ce que j’ai commencé. J’adore essayer d’autres voies. J’ai des projets à la maison mais si j’ai l’opportunité de venir à Oliana je la saisirai.
– Quels sont tes rêves, les choses que tu aimerais accomplir en milieu naturel ? Ou préfères-tu te concentrer uniquement sur des objectifs en compétition ? Bien sûr que j’en ai ! J’aime les deux ! J’ai juste besoin de trouver les bonnes périodes pour le faire. J’ai encore des choses à faire en compétition mais j’ai aussi des projets en extérieur dans un coin de ma tête.

– What was the plan for your stay in Oliana? I wanted to check out some routes to see how I feel, but mostly just climbing and I also wanted to see how far I can go with my onsight.
– How did the idea of trying to onsight “Fish Eye” come up? Actually I never thought of trying to onsight an 8c, but later that day I just decided that I would give “Fish eye” a go. No pressure, just climbing.
– How did you feel during the onsight? Can you describe your climbing? I felt super good, very relaxed and focused. I didn’t panic if I didn’t see a sequence right away, I was super chill. I think I was climbing pretty fast, resting where I thought was appropriate. I took some time in the last slabby part because there was no chalk anywhere and I really didn’t want to fall there.
– How was your pump? When did you understand that you would actually succeed? In the first “harder” part I wasn’t that pumped. Up to the last jug of the more overhanging part I climbed pretty fast, resting where I needed and there I realised that I could succeed. But the last part was very tricky so I could fall anywhere but I stayed calm and slowly figured out the sequence.
– Have you ever attempted to onsight an 8c before? Do you think-as many do-that you haven’t reached your limits yet? I have never attempted to onsight an 8c, before it was more flash attempt or I had to work a bit to send the thing. But now I think with the right route I could also try to onsight something harder.
– Can you describe your onsight of American Hustle? A big fight? My decision was pretty much the same as with “Fish eye”. I just decided to give it a go, no pressure to onsight it. In my opinion it’s harder than Fish eye so I also had to fight a bit more. But I was very relaxed and could solve the moves pretty fast. It was not so obvious so I had to really fight in a few sections of the route.
– Can you compare your ascents of “Fish Eye” and “American Hustle”? Which route did you find harder? I actually already answered in the previous answer but I would say “Fish eye” is easier and more obvious in the harder overhanging section, and the top part is very tricky. On the other hand “American Hustle” is harder, more powerful and intense and less obvious. I would say I was pretty lost on some parts of the route but the top part was very nice and obvious compared to the one in “Fish eye”. So in my opinion American Hustle was harder to onsight.
– You checked out “La dura dura” and “Joe mama”. Will you come back to redpoint them or other routes? Or are the plans you alluded to closer to home? I definitely need to come back! To finish what I started. I would also love to try other routes. I also have some projects at home but if I get a chance to go to Oliana I will take it.
– Have you got some dreams of rock climbing achievements, or you prefer to focus on competitions? Of course I do. I love both! I just need to find the right time when to do what. I still have some things to do in competitions, but I also have some outdoor projects in mind.
Après Sasha DiGiulian, Margo Hayes, Michaela Kiersch et Annie Chouinard, la grimpeuse allemande Solveig Korherr, 23 ans a réussi dimanche la cinquième ascension féminine de la classique dure de Red River Gorge, “Pure Imagination”. La grimpeuse allemande, âgée de 23 ans, qui a réalisé son premier 9a cet été avec “La Cabane au Canada”, est aussi une amoureuse du Red. En 2019, Solveig y avait déjà enchainé “Lucifer”, puis projeté “Pure Imagination”, une ligne qui était restée ancrée dans sa tête depuis 2 ans. Sur son compte Instagram, Solveig commente :
“Cette voie m’avait échappée la dernière fois que j’étais là. Pendant deux ans, j’ai été obsédée par l’idée de revenir. C’était une de mes lignes de rêve ! La première fois que je l’ai essayée, j’ai été époustouflée par le fait qu’il soit possible de tenir ces petites arquées dans un panneau aussi déversant. J’ai persévéré un peu et fait de rapides progrès, mais je n’étais pas assez en forme pour pouvoir empiler toutes les sections. Il y a une semaine, nous sommes revenus dans le Red et j’ai tout de suite sauté sur “Pure Imagination”. J’étais motivée comme jamais ! J’ai enfin pu élever mon niveau. Je me sentais plus forte sur les prises, notamment dans la dernière partie très soutenue, mais j’en bavais pas mal encore au crux du bas avec cette fameuse arquée qui te coupe les doigts, aiguisée comme un couperet. Dimanche, avec des conditions polaires et une bonne ambiance à la falaise, j’ai été capable d’enchainer la partie du bas et de clipper le relais ! Merci à tout le monde pour les encouragements !”
After Sasha DiGiulian, Margo Hayes, Michaela Kiersch and Annie Chouinard, Solveig Korherr became the 5th woman to clip the anchor of the mega classic “Pure Imagination”, Red River Gorge, USA. The German rockclimber, 23, who sent her first 9a this summer with “La Cabane au Canada” is also fond of the Kentucky mecca. On her previous trip in 2019, Solveig climbed “Lucifer”, then projected “Pure Imagination”, a line which has stayed in her mind for the last 2 years! She reports on Instagram:
“This was the one that got away last time that I was in the Red. I have been obsessed with coming back to it for the last two years. It is a dream line of mine! The first time I went up it, I was mind-blown at how it would even be possible to hold on to these tiny little crimps on such a steep panel. I persevered a bit and made some very good progress back then but I just wasn’t quite fit enough to link all the sections.
One week ago we finally made it back to the Red and I immediately hopped on Pure Imagination. My psych was flying high over the moon! I could definitely tell that I levelled up. I felt much stronger on the holds especially in the sustained upper part but I was still struggling a bit with the lower crux with the famous crimp that cuts your fingers and that is as thin as the sharp edge of a knife.
On Sunday with some icy conditions and phenomenal vibes at the cliff, I was able to climb through the lower part and managed to clip the anchors! Thanks everybody for cheering on!“

Le grimpeur pro Robbie Phillips a découvert cette voie à Duntelchaig dans les Highlands écossais après le premier confinement, mais n’était pas assez fort… Après un hiver de drame familial, d’entraînement et de confinement supplémentaire, il s’est préparé pour le projet et l’a réussi. Quelques minutes après, la légende écossaise Dave McLeod, avec qui il l’avait travaillée, réalisait d’ailleurs la première répétition. Toutes les infos sur cette ouverture dans la vidéo ci-dessous!

Robbie Phillips found this rock climb at Duntelchaig in the Scottish highlands after the first lockdown, but wasn’t strong enough… After a winter family loss and lockdown training on his home wall, he prepared himself for the project and sent it. A few minutes later, Scottish legend Dave McLeod, with whom he worked the line from the beginning, did the first repeat. Watch the video below!
Les derniers 8C+ bloc sont l’oeuvre de l’américain Taylor McNeill et du belge Simon Lorenzi ! Après 3 ans d’efforts et plus de 50 jours de travail, Taylor a réussi la première ascension de “Moonlight Sonata”, le bloc le plus dur de Joe’s Valley, une proue à compression qu’il propose à 8C+, vidéo ci-dessous à la clé. Jusqu’alors, Taylor avait déjà réussi quelques blocs extrêmes comme “Squoze” (8C) , “Southern Drawl” (8C) ou encore “The Big Island” (8B+/C à Bleau).
On n’avait pas donné de ses nouvelles depuis l’ouverture de “Soudain Seul”, le Belge Simon Lorenzi vient quant à lui d’annoncer une répétition du classique Suisse de Val Bavona “Off the wagon low start” 8C+ après les ascensions de Raboutou, Webb, Woods et Cameroni. Voici son commentaire laissé sur les réseaux sociaux : “J’ai essayé la version basse de bloc le jour où j’ai réussi le grand mouvement du départ debout. Après avoir passé quelques sessions sur ce bloc ces deux derniers mois, tombant à chaque fois au même mouvement j’ai finalement trouvé la clé il y a 2 semaines pendant une nuit pluvieuse. C’était mon dernier jour et le réta était mouillé donc j’ai décidé de trouver quelque chose pour dompter davantage ce mouvement clé. J’ai réglé de petits détails qui m’a permis de faire le mouvement 5 fois sur 10. Du coup j’ai compris que la session suivante pouvait être la bonne. Cette semaine je suis venu à Sonlerto pour une session. Le seul jour grimpable était hier à cause de la pluie. Donc j’ai fait la route depuis la Belgique (9 heures) mardi en espérant que ce jour serait assez. J’ai commencé à essayer à 15h mais après 3 heures et environ 15 essais je tombais toujours à ce fameux mouvement, et je commençais à devenir fou et vraiment fatigué. Ma dernière option a été de prendre un gros repos et je suis allé voir Clem Lechaptois et Dave Graham essayer “Roadkill” pendant une heure. Je suis revenu pour donner mes derniers essais. Après une première tentative pas terrible, j’ai décidé de remettre immédiatement un nouvel essai pour garder mes sensations dans le crux. Cela s’est passé bien mieux que prévu, et quelques cris plus tard, j’étais au sommet du bloc !”

After 3 years of effort and more than 50 days of work, Taylor has successfully completed the first ascent of “Moonlight Sonata”, the hardest boulder in Joe’s Valley, a compression prow that he proposes at 8C+, video below. Until then, Taylor had already succeeded in some extreme boulders like “Squoze” (8C), “Southern Drawl” (8C) or even “The Big Island” (8B+/C in Bleau).
Quite silent since his first ascent of “Soudain Seul”, The Belgian Simon Lorenzi has just announced a repeat of the Swiss classic of Val Bavona “Off the wagon low start” 8C + after the ascents of Raboutou, Webb, Woods and Cameroni. Here is his comment left on social media: “I started to try the low start as soon as i did the big move from the stand once. After spending few sessions in the boulder the last two months and falling at the same move every time i finally found the key 2 weeks ago during a rainy night. It was my last day and the top out was wet so i decided to try something to improve THE crux move. Surprisingly i found a small trick and did the move around 5 times out of 10 tries. From there i felt that the next session could be the one. So this week i went to Sonlerto for one session. The only climbable day was yesterday because of the rain so i did the road from belgium (9hrs) thuesday hoping that the day after would be enough. Wednsday i started to try at 3pm but after 3 hours and 15th tries falling at the same f****** move i was going crazy but also too tired. My last option was to have a big rest so i went to see Dave Graham and Clément Lechaptois trying “Road Kill” for 1h. I came back to the Wagon to give my last few attempts. My first attempt was’nt very good so i decided to go quickly afterwards to keep the feeling of the crux. It worked better than expected and few screams later i was standing on the top of the boulder!”
