Deux années après la première ascension de “Bibliographie”, le mutant allemand continue de proposer des premières ascensions extrêmes sur la falaise mythique de Céüse ! Cette fois, Alex vient de réussir la première ascension d’un projet équipé par Chris Sharma en 2012 au secteur Face de Rat, “Ratstaman Vibrations”. Essayée entre autres par Lucien Martinez, Seb Bouin et Charles Albert, cette voie requiert une escalade particulièrement puissante au milieu du panneau très déversant quasi dépourvu de volumes.
Alex commente via Instagram :
“J’ai essayé un coup la voie la première fois que je suis venu à Céüse, en 2014. Puis en 2017 je suis investi dans “Bibliographie” qui m’a pris quelques saisons. En 2021 j’ai mis un autre essai dans “Ratstaman Vibrations” et je l’ai réalisée en 3 parties au 2ème jour, et je ne suis pas revenu jusqu’à il y a 3 semaines. Je suis arrivé juste après la coupe du monde de Chamonix, et après 5 jours dedans, j’étais proche de faire la voie, mais je n’ai pas pu concrétiser. La coupe du monde de Briançon a agi comme une pause bienvenue, et après une semaine de compète et d’entrainement sans faire la fameuse marche d’approche je suis revenu à Céüse. Le premier jour de mon retour je me suis senti très bien, et j’ai réalisé la voie à mon second jour ! “Ratstaman est une voie mythique pour moi. Équipée par Chris Sharma il y a longtemps sur une des meilleures falaises au Monde, essayée par pas mal de forts grimpeurs, mais toujours pas réalisée depuis ces années. Pour sûr une des meilleures voies que j’ai grimpées dans le niveau 9b.”

Two years after the first ascent of “Bibliographie”, Alex Megos is back in Céüse for some business with a new extreme first ascent. This time, Alex just freed an old project bolted by Chris Sharma (in 2012) in Face de Rat overhang, “Ratstaman Vibrations”. Tried by strong climbers like Lucien Martinez, Seb Bouin and Charles Albert, this route is offers a really powerful climbing in a massive overhang without volumes. “Already the first time I came to Ceüse back in 2014 I had a look at this route, but never decided to actually try. I got busy with Bibliographie in 2017, which took me a few seasons to finish.
In 2021 I gave Ratstaman another go and climbed it in three parts on my second day, but didn’t go back for it until three weeks ago.
Right after the World Cup in Chamonix I headed to Ceüse to properly try the route. After five days I got really close to doing it, but couldn’t quite piece it together in the end. The World Cup in Briançon came as a welcomed break from hiking up the hill and after a week of competing and training I returned to Ceüse. First day back on the route felt really good and already on the second day of this trip I had the perfect send go!
Ratstaman is one of those mythical routes for me. Bolted by Chris Sharma a while ago at one of the best crags in the world, tried by a few strong people, but not been done for many years.
For sure one of the best routes I’ve ever done or tried in the 9b range.“

Privé de compétition internationale cet été en raison d’une contre-perf aux championnats de France, Le compétiteur français originaire de Besançon Nao Monchois rebondit et vient de réaliser son premier 9a+ à Entraygues, dans le Briançonnais, avec “La moustache qui fâche”. C’est la 6ème ascension de cette voie d’endurance de force sur une vingtaine de mouvements très puissants. Nao avait déjà réalisé du 9a avec “La cadre nouvelle version” il y a deux ans. Voici sa réaction avec en bonus une vidéo sympa dans la voie.

“J’ai effectué 3 petits trips pour la faire, un de 4 sessions pour bien repérer les méthodes, un de 3 jours où j’ai commencé à mettre de bons essais et enfin un dernier de 3 sessions pour finir le boulot ! Au début, je faisais à peu près tous les mouvements mais je subissais trop en doigts pour espérer tous les enchaîner. C’est pourquoi je me suis un peu entraîné dans ce domaine pour moins subir intrinsèquement. Sinon, j’ai continué à faire pas mal de bloc à côté pour garder la patate, et j’aimais bien faire des grosses journées pour maintenir un bon volume en me finissant dans “Sankukaï” (une voie à côté de la moustache).
La voie s’appelle ainsi en référence à une moustache de sika dans Sankukaï, le 8c+ connu de Entraygues. Pour la petite histoire, une arquée similaire avait cassé et ainsi Olivier Fourbet (un local) avait sculpté cette moustache de sika pour garder l’effort hyper homogène de cette voie. Il y a toujours un débat sur la possibilité de l’enlever pour que la voie soit entièrement naturelle (hormis les prises renforcées), cela rendrait l’effort beaucoup plus bloc mais apparemment cela marchera quand même. Bientôt un référendum au pied de la voie !

Deprived of international competitions this summer due to a poor showing at the French nationals, the competitor from Besançon Nao Monchois is back on the rocks and just freed his first 9a+ at Entraygues in the Briançonnais with “La moustache qui fâche”. This is the 6th ascent of this short power endurance route (around 20 moves). Nao previously climbed a 9a with “Le cadre nouvelle version” two years ago at Céüse. “I made 3 short trips to do it, one of 4 sessions to check the betas, one of 3 days where I started to put some solid goes in and finally a last one of 3 sessions to finish the job! At the beginning, I was doing almost all the moves but suffered too much in terms of finger strength to hope to link them all. That’s what I focused on in training to suffer less. Otherwise, I kept doing a lot of bouldering to stay in shape, and I liked to do big days to maintain a good endurance base, ending my days up in “Sankukaï” (a route next to “La moustache”). The route is so called in reference to a sika mustache in Sankukaï, the 8c+ known to Entraygues. For the record, a small crimp had broken and Olivier Fourbet (a local) sculpted this sika mustache to keep the hyper homogeneous effort of this route. There is always a debate on the possibility of removing it in order to keep the route entirely natural (apart from the reinforced holds), it would make the effort much more bouldery, but apparently it would still work. Soon there’ll be a referendum at the crag!”

Le grimpeur brésilien Felipe Camargo vient de réaliser la première ascension d’une grande-voie très dure au pays, “Avenida Brasil” 8c, 280 mètres. La grande-voie très déversante se situe dans une énorme grotte au Parque do Petar (Alto Ribeira, Sud de Sao Paulo). Après 21h d’escalade, Felipe a libéré l’affaire pour une des grande-voies les plus difficiles d’Amérique du Sud. Voici en avant-première quelques images en attendant le film complet. Felipe est un adepte du genre, lui qui avait déjà libéré en 2016 la grande voie en plafond de Getu (Chine) “Corazon de Ensueno”, 8c aussi !

Après “Nordic Marathon” et de nombreuses coches dans le 9a/+ qu’on ne vous relaye même plus Seb Bouin vient de parachever avec panache son trip Norvégien avec la 3ème ascension de “Change” à Flatanger à son dernier essai du séjour ! Connu comme le premier 9b+ mondial en 2012 après la première ascension de Adam Ondra la décotation de “Chilam Balam”, la voie avait été répétée par l’italien Stefano Ghisolfi en 2020. Sans se prononcer pour l’instant sur le niveau de la voie, voici ses confidences laissées sur les réseaux.

“Après avoir réalisé indépendamment la première et seconde partie mon objectif était d’essayer la voie entière. Le problème était qu’il me restait 4 jours de grimpe avant de rentrer à la maison.
Je ne savais si ce serait assez pour réussir l’intégrale. Mon corps commençait à être fatigué par la grotte. Je me sentais fatigué du séjour, mais je voulais jouer le jeu jusqu’à la fin.
Le premier jour, les conditions étaient horribles, pas mal de prises clé étaient mouillées. j’ai décidé de ne pas grimper et d’attendre le jour suivant.
Le 2ème jour, c’était toujours humide, mais les prises clé étaient un peu plus sèches, mais l’humidité ne me donnait pas confiance. J’ai quand même décidé d’essayer la voie. C’était difficile d’attendre plus longtemps sachant que j’allais partir bientôt. J’ai réussi la première partie, je me suis beaucoup reposé au début de la seconde longueur, j’ai passé le crux en traversée, et je suis tombé juste après au second crux. Les prises étaient vraiment trempées.

Le 3ème jour, je me suis senti fatigué de ma tentative de la veille et je n’ai pas très bien dormi. Je ne pensais pas grimper, je voulais attendre d’être prêt. Je me suis rendu à la grotte pour voir les condis et assurer ma copine dans sa voie. Les conditions étaient exceptionnelles ! J’étais un peu timoré dans mon esprit. Dois-je essayer et tirer avantage des condis ? Ou dois-je attendre d’avoir récupéré pleinement ? J’ai finalement décidé d’essayer la voie. Je volais littéralement sur les prises grâce aux bonnes condis. C’était tellement différent de la veille. Je suis content de dire que je n’ai pas fait d’erreurs, avec la croyance que je pouvais le faire, et ça l’a fait ! Je ne suis pas un habitué du dernier essai, mais là cette fois c’est arrivé !
J’ai réalisé la voie avec des genouillères comme le précédent ascensionniste, Stefano Ghisolfi.

After “Nordic Marathon” and numerous sends in the 9a/+ that we didn’t mention anymore, Seb Bouin just finished his glorious stay here with the 3rd repeat of “Change” at his last try of the trip! Known as the first 9b+ of climbing history with the first ascent by Adam Ondra in 2012 and the downgrade of “Chilam Balam”, the route was repeated by Italian gun Stefano Ghisolfi in 2020. Without giving his opinion yeat regarding the grade, here is Seb’s comment left on social media.

“After sending pitch 1 and pitch 2 independently, my goal was for sure trying the entire route. The only problem was I only had four more days, before my departure to come back home.

I didn’t know if it would be enough for the entire route. My body started to feel crushed by this cave. I felt tired from the trip. But I wanted to play the game until the very end.

Day 1, the conditions were terrible. It was humid and wet. A lot of the key holds were wet. I decided to not climb and wait for the next day.

Day 2, it was still humid, and key holds were a bit dryer, but the humidity didn’t give me confidence. I decided to try the route anyway. It was difficult to wait much longer, knowing I had to leave soon. I passed the first pitch, rested a lot before pitch 2. Then passed the first traverse crux on Pitch 2, and fell straight after that on the second crux. The holds were really humid and almost wet.

Day 3 (August 5th), I still felt really tired from my attempt on the previous day, and I didn’t sleep well during the night. I wasn’t planning to climb – I wanted to wait until I felt ready. I went up to the cave to check out conditions and belay my girlfriend on her route. The conditions were exceptional! I was torn in my mind. Should I try it and take advantage of the conditions? or should I wait until I knew I was fully recovered? I finally decided to try the route. I was literaly flowing through the holds, due to the good conditions. It was so much different than the day before.

I am happy to say that I made no mistakes and felt the belief that I could make it to the end, and I did! I am not usually a ‘last day, last try’ kind of guy, but this time it happened.

I climbed the route with kneepads, like previous ascensionist Stefano Ghisolfi.

“Plus dur que tous les 9a+ que j’ai réalisés“, c’est avec ces mots que Tanguy Merard a qualifié la difficulté de la première ascension qu’il vient de réaliser sur le site Grenoblois de l’Abattoir avec “Hannigraal”, proposé 9b, une voie équipée par Florent Plaze qui deviendrait la voie la plus dure de la cuvette. La voie est une extension du 9a “Hannidalle tracteur”, qui se conclut par les difficultés de “La cinquantaine éclatante” 9a+, une voie que Tanguy avait aussi réussi à libérer la semaine passée. Il nous en dit plus.

– Tu as l’air de te faire plaisir à l’Abattoir, ta nouvelle falaise de prédilection ?
J’ai découvert la falaise l’an dernier, j’y suis allé deux fois, quand je suis arrivé à Grenoble. J’avais essayé “Hannidalle tracteur”, 9a. J’avais pas eu l’occasion d’y retourner, j’avais pas fait trop de falaise dans le coin.

– Tu essayais depuis longtemps cette voie où c’était un peu improvisé ? Comment en as-tu entendu parler ?
Là j’y suis retourné car Seb Berthe essayait le 9a et l’extension et m’a proposé d’essayer car c’est juste à côté de chez moi. Vu que j’avais déjà essayé, je me suis dit que ce serait cool d’y retourner. La première fois que j’y suis retourné c’était il y a 3 semaines, j’ai ensuite réalisé 6 séances espacées sur 2 semaines pour faire plein de voies, qui ont des parties communes, “Hannidalle tracteur” en 9a, puis “La cinquantaine éclatante” le 9a+, “Brouncha” le 9a, et enfin le 9b.

– Peux-tu décrire “Hannigraal” ? A quoi cela ressemble ?
Le style j’adore ! J’avais déjà grimpé à Mouriès chez moi dans le Sud et c’est un peu similaire. Le rocher est vraiment exceptionnel, avec de magnifiques arquées. Cela commence avec “Hannidalle tracteur”, à la fois assez bloc mais rési : plein de pas de blocs d’affilée sans trop de repos avec une fin rési. S’ensuit une décontraction pas terrible sur des arquées plates, et quand tu repars du relais du 9a tu fais un 7C+ bloc très à doigts, avec un réta dans la dalle, où tu peux souffler un peu avant un jeté latéral à 2 mains sur l’arête de la falaise, vraiment classe. Le crux du coup est là haut, c’est de passer dans la dalle.

– Définitivement ta voie la plus dure ?
Comparé aux autres 9a+ que j’ai faits, c’est plus dur et aussi davantage dans mon style. Quand je l’ai fait tout était parfait. Il y avait les condis, j’étais en forme, j’étais calé et c’est assez dans mon style. Je pense vraiment que c’est la plus dure.

– Tes prochains projets pour la période estivale ?
J’en ai pas mal : retourner à Entraygues dans mon projet “Le pamphlet”, retourner à Céüse pour “Ratstaman Vibrations” et dans le Verdon pour “La rage d’Adam”. Voici mes 3 gros projets principaux pour cet été. Et ensuite faire des projets aux alentours, comme par exemple “Le braille” à côté de chez moi, du bloc en Suisse, etc…

“Harder than any 9a+ I’ve ever climbed,” was how Tanguy Merard described the difficulty of his first ascent of “Hannigraal” at Grenoble’s Abattoir, a proposed 9b route bolted by Florent Plaze that is set to become the hardest in the area. The route is an extension of the 9a “hannidalle tracteur”, before proposing all the difficulties of “La cinquantaine éclatante” 9a+, a route that Tanguy also managed to free last week. He tells us more…

– Do you seem to be taking good time at l’Abattoir, your new favorite crag?
I discovered the crag last year, I went there twice when I first moved to Grenoble. Ibtried “Hannidalle tracteur”, 9a. I hadn’t had a chance to go back, as I hadn’t done too many sessions in the area.

– Had you been trying this route for a long time, or was it a bit improvised? How did you hear about it?
I went back there because Seb Berthe was trying the 9a and the extension and suggested I give it a try because it’s right by my house. Since I’d already tried it, I thought it would be cool to go back. The first time I went back was 3 weeks ago, then I did 6 sessions spaced out over 2 weeks for climbing a lots of routes, which have common parts, “Hannidalle tracteur” in 9a, then “La cinquantaine éclatante” the 9a+, “Brouncha” the 9a, and finally the 9b.

– Can you describe “Hannigraal”? What does it look like?
I love the style! I’d already climbed Mouriès back home in the South and it’s a bit similar. The rock is really exceptional, with magnificent crimps. It starts with “Hannidalle tracteur”, which is quite bouldery but at the same time resistant: lots of bouldering cruxs in a row without too much rest, with a resistant finish. This is followed by a not-so-great kind of rest on flat crimps, and when you leave the 9a anchor you climb a 7C+ boulder very fingery, with a mantle in the slab, where you can breathe a little before a 2-handed lateral dyno on the cliff arete, really classy. The crux of the route is at the top, to pass through the slab.

– Definitely your hardest route?
Compared to the other 9a+ I’ve done, it’s harder and also more in my style. When I did it, everything was perfect. I catched the conditions, I was in shape, my betas went precise and it’s pretty much in my style. I really think that’s the hardest route I climbed.

– What about your next projects for the summer?
I’ve got quite a few: going back to Entraygues for my project “Le pamphlet”, going back to Céüse for “Ratstaman Vibrations” and in Verdon for “La rage d’Adam”. These are my 3 main projects for this summer. And then I’ll be doing some projects in the surrounding area, such as “Le braille” near my home, bouldering in Switzerland, etc…

On connaissait “Kmira”, “Beyond intégral“, “Ariégeois cœur Loyal” (ACL) – toutes non-répétées-, et voici que Seb Bouin propose un nouveau challenge extrême dans la grotte du Pic St-Loup (Hérault). Le grimpeur pro vient de réaliser la première ascension des “Rois du lithium”, proposant de nouveau 9b. Seb avait équipé la ligne le printemps dernier, après son ascension d'”ACL” 9b. Voici ses mots.

“Cette partie du mur m’attirait depuis longtemps. Depuis le sol, “Les Rois du Lithium” semblait être la ligne parfaite. Tout droit dans le mur avec une fin de 20m hardcore. Quand je l’ai équipé, je ne pouvais pas imaginer qu’il y aurait autant de prises parfaites. Et quand je l’ai essayé pour la première fois, j’ai été stupéfait par les mouvements et la ligne. « Les Rois du Litthium » est divisée en deux parties. Il y a une approche facile autour de 8b qui permet d’accéder à la partie principale. Et puis, il y a cette magnifique partie d’endurance de force qui compte 22 mouvements durs d’affilée. La ligne et les mouvements sont très plaisants. Chaque essai est un plaisir. C’est comme surfer sur une vague. “Les Rois du Lithium” est probablement ma voie en 9b préférée. La difficulté rencontre la beauté ici. Et il y a quelque chose de plus : c’est amusant. L’aspect ludique est très important dans un projet difficile. Quand on aime l’effort, quand taper un essai est une source d’inspiration, on sait qu’on a choisi le bon projet. J’ai essayé cette voie pendant l’automne 2023. J’étais très enthousiaste à l’idée de terminer le travail ce printemps. J’avais besoin de temps pour apprendre correctement les 22 mouvements difficiles. Il n’y a pas de place pour l’erreur. Le dernier mouvement difficile est vraiment époustouflant. A partir de deux mauvaises épaules, il faut attraper une arquée plate main gauche et prendre un ballant avec. Je suis tombé plusieurs fois là-haut. Il y a un autre projet difficile et inspirant au Pic Saint Loup : le projet « Wolf kingdom ». Il sera plus difficile que “Les Rois du Lithium”. Continuons le combat !”

This part of the wall has attracted me for a long time. From the ground, “Les Rois du Lithium” looked like the perfect line. Straight through the wall with a 20m-long hardcore finish. When I bolted it, I couldn’t imagine there would be many perfect holds. But when I first tried it, I was amazed by the moves and the line. “Les Rois du Litthium” is basically split in two parts. There is an easy approach around 8b / 5.13d tiring you before the main part. And then, there is this beautiful power endurance section totalling 22 hard moves in a row. The line and the moves are so fun. Every try was a pleasure. It’s like surfing a wave. “Les Rois du Lithium” is possibly my favorite of the 5.15bs I have climbed. The difficulty meets the beauty here. And there is something more: it’s fun. The fun factor is quite important on a hard project. When you like the effort, when riding the rock is inspiring your, you know you’ve got the right project. I tried this route during the fall of 2023. I was so psyched to finish the job this spring. I needed time to learn the 22 hard moves properly. There is no room for mistakes. The last hard move is so stunning: From two bad gastons, you have to reach a left-hand sloppy crimp and take a swing from it. I fell a few times up there. There is another hard and inspiring project in Pic Saint Loup : The “Wolf kingdom”. It will be harder than “Les Rois du Lithium”. Let’s continue the fight !

Invité par Kathy Choong désireuse de lui faire découvrir les falaises locales, le célèbre grimpeur pro tchèque Adam Ondra s’est rendu en Suisse pour visiter Soyhières dans le Sud du Jura bâlois. Au programme : essayer en une après-midi une bonne partie des classiques dures de la falaise avec des runs à vue. Le résultat donne mal à la tête avec pas moins de deux 8b+ réalisés dont un à vue en guise d’échauffement, un 8c à vue avec un zeste de réussite (il en faut !) et un 8c+ au premier essai dont l’issue aurait pu être optimisé avec une genouillère des deux côtés. Invited by Kathy Choong, who wanted him to discover the local crags, Czech famous pro climber Adam Ondra travelled to Switzerland to visit Soyhières, South of Basel Jura. The plan was to try out a good proportion of the crag’s hard classics in one afternoon, with some onsight burns. The result was a rampage, with 2 8b+ climbed, including one onsight, an 8c onsight and an 8c+ 2nd go. Très sensible à la cause écologique, Nolwen proposera à travers “Une voie pour la nature” des voyages de sensibilisation sur les problématiques environnementales, remettant en question la place de l’homme dans le vivant.

– Tu annonces lancer un projet “exploration de nature”, peux tu nous en décrire les grandes lignes ? Un voyage itinérant à mobilité douce et en autonomie ?
Depuis pas mal de temps, j’avais dans un coin de ma tête l’idée d’un projet qui mêle escalade, écologie et art. Concrètement, je prévois de réaliser 2 aventures, sous forme de voyages bas-carbone, à deux pas de la maison :

• Fin mai, 1 expédition en voilier dans les Calanques de Marseille, explorera la Ville et l’Océan
• Fin septembre, 1 voyage en train autour d’Annot, explorera les Forêts et les Rivières.
  Mais plus qu’un trip grimpe, c’est une démarche d’apprentissage en lien avec le Vivant !

– Pourquoi se lancer dans cette aventure ? Quelle est ta motivation ?
Ma motivation principale est de mieux comprendre et ressentir le Vivant. A travers cette expérience, j’espère inspirer une remise en question du rapport homme/nature pour sortir d’un rapport dominant/dominé et aller vers un rapport plus égalitaire, en cultivant notre émerveillement, et en adoptant des pratiques plus respectueuses des autres vivants qui nous entourent.

Grimpeurs et grimpeuses, tout comme de nombreux sportifs pratiquant des activités de pleine nature, nous utilisons la nature comme un objet pour nourrir et consommer (ou consumer?) notre passion. Mais, à l’heure des crises écologiques que nous traversons, ne serait-il pas temps de remettre l’homme et l’ensemble de la biodiversité sur un pied d’égalité ?

– Il y aura des collaborations avec différents acteurs, quel en est l’enjeu ?
En effet, cette exploration est également un projet de rencontres de vivants qui protègent le vivant ! Avec des experts à la pointe dans leur domaine, nous aborderons des enjeux sociétaux comme la pollution lumineuse, l’exploitation des océans, la protection des forets, ou encore celle des rivières.

Biologiste, naturaliste, activiste, philosophe, photographe, musicien, … mon intention est de croiser les regards pour éclairer notre rapport au vivant à travers différentes disciplines et sensibilités, mais aussi inspirer sur les diverses manières de s’engager pour la protection de l’environnement.

Convaincue que les émotions sont un élément-clé pour donner envie de passer à l’action, une collaboration toute particulière sera mise en œuvre avec l’artiste et grimpeur Philippe Echaroux : dans chacun des 4 écosystèmes visités, nous réaliserons des photographies comme objets de transmission des enjeux.

– Et la grimpe dans tout cela, as-tu déniché de belles perles à partager ?
Dans ces aventures, chaque voie d’escalade donnera une voix à un écosystème vivant. Urban climbing à Marseille, kingline au bord de l’eau dans les Calanques, grimpe d’arbre en foret … de la belle escalade en tout genre sera au programme !

– Comment organises tu tes étapes ? Sur combien de temps comptes-tu partir ?
Ce seront des aventures de 15 jours chacune, vous pouvez suivre toutes mes péripéties sur mon compte Instagram ainsi que sur le compte MAIF Sport Planète, partenaire principal du projet à partir du 17 mai !

French climber Nolwen Berthier has just announced the launch of a nature exploration project combining climbing, low mobility, discovery of living things and scientific encounters. Highly sensitive to the ecological cause, Nolwen’s “A route for nature” project will offer trips to raise awareness of environmental issues, questioning human’s place in the living world.

– You’ve announced the launch of a “nature exploration” project. Can you give us an outline? A self-guided, soft mobility itinerant trip?
I’ve had the idea of a project combining climbing, ecology and art in the back of my mind for quite some time. Specifically, I plan to carry out 2 adventures, in the form of low-carbon journeys, just a stone’s throw from home:

• At the end of May, 1 sailing expedition in Marseille’s Calanques, exploring the city and the ocean.
• At the end of September, 1 train trip around Annot, exploring the Forests and Rivers.
  
  But more than just a climbing trip, it’s a way of learning about life!

– Why embark on this adventure? What’s your motivation?
My main motivation is to better understand and feel Life. Through this experience, I hope to inspire a rethinking of the relationship between man and nature, to move away from a dominant/dominated relationship towards a more egalitarian one, by cultivating our sense of wonder, and adopting practices that are more respectful of the other living beings around us.

Climbers, like many outdoor sports enthusiasts, we use nature as an object to nourish and consume (or consume?) our passion. But at a time of ecological crisis, isn’t it time to put mankind and biodiversity back on an equal step?

– We’ll be working with a number of different players, so what’s at stake?
Indeed, this exploration is also a project for encounters between living beings who protect living things! With experts at the cutting edge of their fields, we’ll be tackling societal issues such as light pollution, ocean exploitation, forest protection and river conservation.

Biologist, naturalist, activist, philosopher, photographer, musician… my intention is to bring together different points of view to shed light on our relationship with the living world through a variety of disciplines and sensibilities, and to provide inspiration on the different ways of getting involved in environmental protection.

Convinced that emotions are a key element in motivating people to take action, we’ll be working with artist and climber Philippe Echaroux on a special project: in each of the 4 ecosystems we’ll be visiting, we’ll be taking photographs to convey the issues at stake.

– And what about climbing? Have you found any gems to share?
In these adventures, each climbing route will give a voice to a living ecosystem. Urban climbing in Marseille, kingline on the water’s edge in the Calanques, tree climbing in the forest… all kinds of beautiful climbing will be on the schedule!

– How do you organize your trips? How long will you be gone?
These will be 15-day adventures, and you can follow all my adventures on my Instagram account and on the MAIF Sport Planète account, main sponsor of the project from May 17!

En 2019, une des légendes de l’escalade niponne, Yuji Hirayama réalisait la première ascension de “Time Machine” 8c+ à Gozen Iwa, Okutama (Ouest de Tokyo) alors âgé de 50 ans. Revivez les essais et le processus jusqu’à la libération de ce projet de la falaise qui aura demandé 2 années de travail à Yuji. “Time Machine” propose un furieux crux de remontée d’inversée dans la partie sommitale. Quelques mois plus tard, Chris Sharma réalisait la seconde ascension. Le site de Gozen Iwa concentre une partie des voies sportives les plus difficiles du Japon avec entre autres “Maturity” 9a+ et “Soulmate” 9b. A découvrir en images !

In 2019, one of Japan’s climbing legends, Yuji Hirayama, completed the first ascent of “Time Machine” 8c+ at Gozen Iwa, Okutama (West of Tokyo), aged 50 at the time. Relive the tries and the process leading up to the free ascent of this project, which took Yuji 2 years to complete. “Time Machine” offers a furious undercling crux in the upper part of the route. Mat Wright, ce nom vous est peut-être inconnu et pourtant. Le grimpeur britannique compte déjà de nombreux faits d’armes à son actif en escalade sportive, comme une rare ascension de “Hubble” ou encore “Evolution” (9a), du 8C bloc, mais aussi en trad avec “Lexicon“. Mat vient de réaliser la 7ème ascension de la classique trad de Dave McLeod à Dumbarton Rocks, “Rhapsody”, une ligne qu’il avait essayé pour la première fois en 2022. “Rhapsody” propose un 8b d’approche et un 8A bloc en guise de crux sommital particulièrement exposé. Voici les mots de Mat partagés sur son compte Instagram.

“Je me souviens d’être arrivé à Dumbarton avec un sourire suffisant. J’étais prêt à affronter le monde. Jusqu’à présent, mon entrée à l’école ddu trad s’était déroulée sans encombre. Mais “Rhapsody” allait m’arrêter net. J’ai été obligé de lever les mains et d’admettre que j’avais peut-être mordu plus que je ne pouvais mâcher.

Au cours des années qui ont suivi, mon apprentissage du trad a été guidé par un objectif en particulier : l’ascension de “Rhapsody”.

Cette voie insensée est emblématique pour son headwall immensément difficile qui est protégé par un engagement déraisonnable. Ce que les gens ne mentionnent pas, c’est le cauchemar logistique que représente l’accès au sommet de la falaise. Cela ne fait qu’ajouter une pierre à l’énorme défi !

Mon engagement dans “Rhapsody” m’a appris à respecter les défis. J’ai dû faire preuve de discipline mentale et rester concentré à tout moment. Cela a été difficile pour moi, et je n’avais jamais eu à travailler aussi dur auparavant. J’ai connu les montagnes russes et j’ai souvent douté de moi. Mais ce qui est merveilleux, c’est que lorsque ces efforts portent leurs fruits, on croit encore un peu plus en soi. Le syndrome de l’imposture doit sembler fou dans ces circonstances…

Quoi qu’il en soit, j’ai passé de très bons moments sur cette ligne. J’ai rencontré des amis formidables et cela m’a donné une bonne excuse pour passer beaucoup de temps dans l’un des pays les plus géniaux du monde, l’Écosse.

Je dois remercier tout particulièrement Anna Taylor et Sam Lay. Anna m’a assuré plusieurs fois, et son engagement et son soutien ont été un élément majeur de ma réussite ! Sam a réussi à obtenir la note d’assurage E11 !

Je pense qu’il faut dire que Dave McLeod était vraiment en avance sur son temps, et a fait un sacré effort pour conclure l’affaire sur cette ligne époustouflante. Les rumeurs suggèrent qu’il y a eu plus de 100 sessions…”

Mat Wright is a name you may not be familiar with. The British climber already has a number of sport climbing feats to his credit, including a rare ascent of “Hubble” and “Evolution” (9a), from 8C bouldering, but also in trad climbing with “Lexicon”. Mat just completed the 7th ascent of Dave McLeod’s trad classic at Dumbarton Rocks, “Rhapsody”, a line he first tried in 2022. “Rhapsody” offers an 8b approach and an 8A boulder as a particularly exposed summit crux. Here are Mat’s words shared on his Instagram account after his send.

I remember rocking up to Dumbarton with this smug grin. I was ready take on the world. My entry to trad had so far been smooth. But, “Rhapsody” would stop me dead in my tracks. I was forced to hold my hands up and admit that I may have bitten off more than I could chew.

Over the next few years, I would find my trad apprenticeship being steered by one goal in particular, to climb “Rhapsody”.

This insane route is iconic for its immensely difficult headwall that’s guarded by an exposed runout. What people don’t mention is the logistical nightmare that accessing the top of the crag is too. This only adds to the huge challenge!

My commitment to “Rhapsody” has taught me to respect challenge. I’ve had to be mentally disciplined, and remain focused at all times. It’s been hard for me, and I’ve never had to work this hard before. It’s been a roller coaster ride and I doubted myself many times. But the beautiful thing is when these things pay off, you believe in yourself that little bit more. Imposture syndrome must sound crazy given the circumstances…

Anyway, the good times on this line have been really good. I’ve met some really great friends and it’s given me a great excuse to spend a lot of time in one of the most awesome countries in the world, Scotland.

I feel I should pass special thanks to Anna Taylor and Sam Lay. Anna has belayed me many times, and her commitment and support has been a major element to success! Sam managed to score the E11 belay tick!

I think it’s worth saying that Dave McLeod really was ahead of his time, and put one hell of an effort in to seal the deal on this stunning line. Rumours suggest it was over 100 sessions… ”

La grimpeuse Britannique Shauna Coxsey (31 ans) est revenue à son meilleur niveau ! Retraitée des compétitions d’escalade depuis quelques années et devenue maman, Shauna vient de réaliser son 2ème 8B+ bloc en quelques semaines après la réussite de “Fotofobia” à la Pedriza (et son 3ème en comptant “New Base Line” il y a 10 ans). Cette fois-ci, c’est au pays que Shauna a perfé avec “The Boss” à Yarncliffe dans le Peak District. C’est la première ascension féminine du bloc et la plus grosse perf féminine en bloc jamais réalisée par une sur le sol britannique. Le bloc est un toit en compression avec une arête main gauche et des rails plats main droite tout en gainage, spatules et talons. Le problème a été ouvert en 2020 par son compagnon Ned Feehally, un des ténors du bloc britannique.

“Ahhh cette fois-ci, c’était vraiment magique. Ned a fait la première ascension de cette ligne incroyable il y a quelques années et depuis, elle occupait une place dans mon esprit. Bien qu’elle ne soit qu’à une courte distance de notre maison, il m’a fallu des années pour l’essayer. Je me suis sentie assez forte et surtout assez confiante.

Les mouvements sont si puissants et impitoyables. C’est un peu effrayant avec une claque à l’aveugle et quelques plat dos en arrière. De plus, il y a la peur lancinante de tomber de l’arête…

J’ai assemblé ce problème beaucoup plus rapidement que je ne l’avais prévu. C’est complètement fou que je puisse réaliser une ligne comme celle-ci, et encore plus vite. Il n’y avait aucune échappatoire à sa puissante intensité et aucune place pour la peur ou le doute sur la grande claque au max de mon allonge pour moi.

C’est un peu fou de ne plus avoir l’impression de courir après des records antérieurs ou une forme que j’ai déjà eue. Et de sentir que mon corps et mon esprit sont prêts à explorer ce qui est possible.”

British climber Shauna Coxsey (31) is back to her best! Retired from climbing competitions for a few years and now a mother, Shauna just completed her 2nd 8B+ boulder in just a few weeks after the success of “Fotofobia” at Pedriza (and her 3rd 8B+ counting “New Base Line” 10 years ago). This time, it was back home that Shauna broke through with “The Boss” at Yarncliffe in the Peak District. It’s the first female ascent of the boulder and the biggest female bouldering performance ever achieved on British soil. The boulder is a compression roof with a left-hand arete and right-hand flat rails all in compressions, toe hooks and heels. The problem was opened in 2020 by her partner Ned Feehally, one of the tenors of British bouldering.

“Ahhh this one felt pretty magical. Ned made the first ascent of this incredible line a few years back and ever since it’s held a space in my mind. Though only a short drive from our house it took me years to try it. To feel strong enough and more importantly confident enough.

The moves are so feisty and unforgiving. It’s a little spooky with a blind slap and some back splat landings to be had. Plus there’s the niggling fear you could fall off the ledge

I pieced this together much quicker than I expected. It feels totally crazy that I can do a climb like this let alone do it fast. There was no escaping its powerful intensity and no room for fear or doubt on the max span slap for me.

It’s kinda wild to no longer feel I’m chasing previous PBs or a form I once had. And to feel my body and mind are ready for exploring what’s possible.“

La grimpeuse ibérique Ana Belén Argudo a connu un hiver très prolifique en Catalogne avec la réalisation de quelques 8c+ : “Eh Sukkara” (Margalef) , “Joe Blau” (Oliana), “Open your mind” ou encore “La Novena Puerta” (Santa Linya). La moisson vient se terminer à Santa Linya avec la réussite de “La Fabela pa la enmienda”, son second 9a, une croix inattendue qui s’est dessinée un peu par hasard en quelques séances sur place, elle qui s’était davantage investie dans “Victimas Perez” à Margalef cet hiver. La croix dans “La fabela pa la enmienda” a été dévoilée de manière assez originale, grâce à 5 mini- séries vidéo/reels publiés sur son compte Instagram (voir en fin d’article). La voie empile un 8c+ résistant de 30 mètres (“La Fabela”) avec la sortie classique centrale de 2ème longueur (8b+, 20 mètres) tout en haut de la grotte de Santa Linya, pour 50 mètres d’escalade et presqu’environ autant de développé ! C’est la 3ème ascension féminine de la voie après Janja garnbret et Anak Verhoeven. Ana avait déjà réalisé du 9a en 2022 à Cuenca “Cordia Maleficarum” (en vidéo ci-dessous), et est à Villanueva Del Rosario (Andalousie) jusqu’à fin mai pour tenter de projeter et de viser plus haut !

Iberian climber Ana Belén Argudo had a prolific winter in Catalonia, sending numerous 8c+: “Eh Sukkara” (Margalef), “Joe Blau” (Oliana), “Open your mind” and “La Novena Puerta” (Santa Linya). The harvest has just come to an end at Santa Linya with the success of “La Fabela pa la enmienda”, her second 9a, an unexpected send which came unexepectedly after few sessions on the place, having invested more time in “Victimas Perez” at Margalef during the winter. The send in “La fabela pa la enmienda” was published in a rather original way, thanks to 5 mini video/reel series posted on her Instagram account (see at the end of article). The route starts with a tough 30-meter 8c+ (“La Fabela”) and finishes with the classic 2nd central pictch (8b+, 20 meters) to the very top of the Santa Linya cave, for 50 meters of climbing and almost as much development! This is the 3rd female ascent of the route after Janja Garnbret and Anak Verhoeven. Ana previously climbed 9a in 2022 in Cuenca “Cordia Maleficarum” (watch the video above), and is yet in Villanueva Del Rosario (Andalusia) until the end of May in order to project and to aim higher!

Deux ans après avoir réalisé le départ debout, Janja Garnbret est de retour sur “Bügeleisen” à Maltatal en Autriche. L’étoile de la grimpe slovène attendait le moment opportun pour prendre sa revanche sur le assis, et c’était ce dimanche ! Janja n’a fait qu’une bouchée du classique des lieux, un gros panneau déversant sur arquées ouvert il y a 10 ans par Nalle Hukkataival. Après un rapide check des mouvements, la croix est faite en quelques minutes ! Un bloc qu’elle empochera deux fois de suite ! Janja commente via son compte Instagram, avec une vidéo à la clé (en bas d’article).

“Je suis revenue beaucoup plus forte qu’il y a 2 ans et les mouvements me semblaient beaucoup plus faciles qu’avant. Il m’a fallu moins d’une demi-heure pour réussir les mouvements et le bloc. Je suis fière d’être la première femme à l’avoir fait ! Petite anecdote : je n’étais pas satisfaite de la vidéo de mon ascension, alors j’ai recommencé et j’ai grimpé le bloc de nouveau !”

Par cette nouvelle perf Janja prouve une fois encore son talent unique et rejoint le club très fermé des grimpeuses ayant réalisé du 8C bloc : la japonaise Tomoko Ogawa, l’allemande Kaddi Lehmann et les américaines Katie Lamb, Brooke Raboutou, et Ashima Shiraishi.

Two years after completing the stand start, Janja Garnbret is back on “Bügeleisen” in Maltatal, Austria. The Slovenian climbing star was waiting for the right moment to take her revenge on the sit start of the problem, and it was this Sunday! Janja made a quick work of the local classic, a big overhang panel with crimps opened 10 years ago by Nalle Hukkataival! After a quick move check, the send was done in few minutes! A boulder she’ll pocket twice in a row! Janja comments via her Instagram account, with a video to share (watch it below).

“Came back way stronger and moves felt a lot easier than they used to. Took me less than half an hour to get the moves dialed in and send the boulder Proud to be the first woman to get this one done!

Funny sidenote: wasn’t happy with the video Roman took of my ascent, so I actually went for another go and climbed the whole thing again 😉“

With this new feat, Janja once again proves her unique talent and joins the very select club of climbers who have climbed 8C boulder: the Japanese Tomoko Ogawa, the German Kaddi Lehmann and Americans Katie Lamb, Brooke Raboutou, and Ashima Shiraishi.

Felipe a passé une bonne partie de 2023 aux 4 coins du Brésil accompagné de son frère Bruno afin de cocher et filmer 5 premières ascensions remarquables et extrêmes, avec notamment la voie la plus dure d’Amérique du Sud, “Auto Retrato” 9a+. Dans cette belle vidéo de 35 minutes, Felipe revient en images sur les processus et sur ces superbes king lines avec une bande-son au top. Du grès de Pirai au calcaire ultra-compact de la jungle du Cipo en passant par la gigantesque grotte de gneiss de Passa 20 ou de la quartzite du Morro do Macaco, Felipe nous fait découvrir l’incroyable diversité de l’escalade brésilienne.
