Alex Megos n’a pas mis fin à sa parenthèse falaise de début de printemps avec son prolifique séjour à St-Léger. Le grimpeur allemand s’est rendu à Margalef il y a quelques semaines où il réalisé la seconde ascension de “Mejorando Imagen” dans le gros dévers central de La Finestra. La première ascension de cette voie très raide sur monos et bidoigts équipée par Iker Pou avait été réalisée par Ramon Julian en 2013 (en juillet !) après 3 jours de travail et proposée 9a. Située un peu plus à gauche que l’extrême “Perfecto Mundo”, “Mejorando Imagen” est une directe de départ du 9a classique de “Victima Perez” avec une difficulté assez concentrée sur 20 mètres de haut avant un mur final plus facile. Après avoir été très proche lors de son 3ème jour de travail dans la voie, tombant dans le dernier mouvement dur de la voie, Alex a ensuite déchanté et est retombé dans le pas de bloc principal de la voie, un jeté sur un mono. C’est finalement le dernier jour sur place qu’Alex réussit la ligne à son 6ème essai de la journée, les doigts ensanglantés, en allant chercher les paires ! “Parfois, je ne comprends rien à l’escalade et au mental” conclut le grimpeur pro allemand. Alex Megos did not put an end to his early spring break with his prolific trip in St-Léger. The German climber went to Margalef a few weeks ago where he made the second ascent of “Mejorando Imagen” in the big central overhang of La Finestra. The first ascent of this very steep route on monos and two finger pockets, bolted by Iker Pou, was done by Ramon Julian in 2013 (in July!) after 3 days of work and proposed at 9a. Located a little more to the left of the famous “Perfecto Mundo”, “Mejorando Imagen” is a direct start of the classic 9a “Victima Perez” with a fairly concentrated difficulty over 20 meters high before an easier finish. After coming close on his 3rd day, falling on the very last hard move of the route, Alex then failed on the main boulder crux, a jump to a mono. It was finally on his last day in Spain that Alex sent the line. On his 6th try of the day, with bloody fingers, the sending go was meant for cleaning the draws! “Sometimes I don’t understand anything about climbing and the mind” concluded the pro German climber. Le grimpeur fort italien Marcello Bombardi vient de s’offrir son premier 9b avec la 3ème ascension de “lapsus”, une voie localisée à Andonno. Cette voie possède un fort côté historique : c’est le premier 9b italien, réalisée en 2015 par Stefano Ghisolfi, et c’est aussi l’extension du premier 8c+ italien, le mythique “Noïa” par Severino Scassa en 1993. Voici le commentaire de Marcello depuis son compte Instagram :
“Lapsus est le premier 9b italien grimpé par Stefano Ghisolfi en 2015 et bien qu’il soit situé pas loin de chez moi, je ne l’avais jamais pris en considération. Je l’ai toujours considéré comme trop long et extrême pour moi.
L’automne dernier, avec un peu plus de courage et après un voyage assez productif à Flatanger, grâce au temps disponible pour un hiver qui me paraissait médiocre en compétitions et voyages à l’étranger, j’ai décidé de choisir “Lapsus” comme projet à long terme. Mais je ne pensais pas que cela serait si long et dur mentalement d’essayer sans cesse la même voie.
Cela a été une longue aventure, la plus longue que j’ai passée jusqu’à présent sur un seul itinéraire et cela m’a mis à l’épreuve. De croire pouvoir le faire rapidement, de changer trop souvent de méthode pour trouver la plus efficace, de marcher jusqu’à la falaise avec des raquettes et un demi-mètre de neige pour profiter des derniers jours de la saison hivernale, de revenir au printemps et retomber plusieurs fois sur le sommet au même endroit, de perdre son enthousiasme à cause des douleurs à la peau causées par le rocher très abrasif de la première partie, se retrouver avec le bac final devant les yeux mais ne pas être capable de l’attraper et, hier, de pouvoir enfin réussir le jeté final et clipper la chaîne.
Je vais en dire plus sur cette aventure et il y aura une belle vidéo… pour le moment un grand merci à tous les amis qui ont partagé avec moi les journées à la falaise, les joies et les peines, mentales et physiques.
À propos du niveau… Lapsus a été libéré en 9b et répété par Adam Ondra qui le considérait comme un 9b facile. En essayant l’itinéraire, j’ai pu trouver et utiliser une genou qui permet de récupérer avant le dernier pas de bloc final. Ce n’est pas facile de maintenir la tension et de relâcher un peu de poids, surtout venant d’en bas avec une jambe fatiguée, mais je pense que cela pourrait enlever la note complète de 9b.
Quoi qu’il en soit, ce qui compte le plus pour moi, c’est l’expérience et la bataille avec la voie. Elle m’a mis au défi et m’a beaucoup appris et je serai prêt à recommencer, avec ou sans le b.”
Si le niveau est confirmé à 9b, Marcello deviendrait le second grimpeur italien à atteindre ce niveau !
Strong Italian climber Marcella Bombardi just climbed his firt 9b with the third ascent of “Lapsus”, Ghisolfi’s testpiece located in Andonno. This route is quite an historical one: Italy’s first 9b and the extension of “Noia” (first ascent 2015) , Italy’s first 8c+ by Seve Scassa in 1993. Here is comment on his Instagram account:
“Lapsus was the first Italian 9b climbed by Stefano Ghisolfi in 2015 and despite being relatively close to home I had never took it in consideration. I’ve always seen it as too long and extreme for me.
Last autumn, with more courage after a productive trip to Flatanger and thanks to some time available for a winter that looked poor in competitions and foreign trips, I decided to take Lapsus as a long term project. But I didn’t mean that long, very long for my mental tolerance to try the same route.
It has been a long adventure, the longest I have spent so far on a single route and it has put me to the test. From believing to be able to do it quickly, to changing the method too many times to find the most efficient one, to walking to the crag with snowshoes and half a meter of snow to take advantage of the last days of the winter season, to returning to spring and fall on the top several times on the same move, to losing enthusiasm due to skin pain caused by the very abrasive rock of the first part of the route, to getting with the final jug in front of the eyes but not being able to pull and grab it and, yesterday, to finally be able to commit the final jump and clip the chain.
I will tell more about this adventure and there will be a nice video… for the moment a special thanks to all the friends who shared the days at the crag, to share joys and sorrows, mental and physical.
About the grade… Lapsus was freed as 9b and repeated by Adam Ondra who considered it an easy 9b. Trying the route I was able to find and use a kneebar that allows to recover before the last final boulder problem. It is not easy to hold the tension and release some weight, especially coming from below with a tired leg, but I think it could take away the full grade of 9b.
Anyway, what matters most to me was the experience and the battle with the route. He challenged and taught me a lot and I would do it again, with or without the b.“
If the 9b is confirmed, Marcello will become the 2nd italian climber to reach this grade!

Comme beaucoup de grimpeurs pros, la pandémie a fait changer les plans de Jonathan Siegrist pour des destinations plus proches, et tenter de répéter ou d’établir des voies très dures aux US. Ainsi Jonathan s’est rendu dans le désert de l’Ouest de l’Utah dans l’impressionnante Pop Tir Cave pour réaliser la seconde ascension de “Peruvian Necktie”. Cette voie très fortement déversante a été équipée et libérée en 2013 par James Litz et proposée à 9a+, mais la difficulté serait plus soutenue et Jonathan propose 9b. Like many professional climbers, the pandemic changed Jonathan Siegrist‘s plans to domestic destinations, and try to repeat or establish very hard lines in US. So Jonathan went to the desert of Western Utah in the impressive Pop Tir Cave to grab the second ascent of “Peruvian Necktie”. This very steep overhang was bolted and freed in 2013 by James Litz andgiven 9a +, but the difficulty would be more intense and Jonathan is thinking 9b. If the grade is confirmed in the future “Peruvian Necktie” could become the second hardest sportclimbing proposition in US. To discover below!

On s’en doutait un peu après un court été seulement à bosser la voie avant de clipper le relais, l’italien Stefano Ghisolfi a pris quelques heures de réflexion et rend son verdict concernant le niveau de “Bibliographie”. Il décote et suggère 9b+. Voici ses mots :
“Hier et la jour avant j’ai voulu me focaliser sur ma journée, l’escalade et les gens autour de l’histoire de “Bibliographie”. J’ai volontairement évité de parler cotation, mais il semblait inévitable d’aborder le sujet. J’ai passé une journée à trouver les mots justes. Quand j’ai commencé à bosser “Bibliographie”, je ne pouvais imaginer y arriver en une saison. Je regardais les videos d’Alex Megos dans la voie et la voie me semblait impossible, et je me disais que si cela lui avait pris 60 jours, je pensais revenir ici pendant des années… A la fin, j’ai réussi à me sentir bien dans la voie dès le début du processus, j’ai trouvé une nouvelle méthode dans le crux (en changeant de main comparé à Alex) et j’ai trouvé aussi une nouvelle méthode dans le second crux. Je l’ai grimpé en 25 jours de grimpe répartis sur 3 mois, et j’ai comparé l’effort à “Change” ou “Perfecto Mundo” en changeant d’avis tous les 2 jours. “Change” m’a pris autant de temps et “Perfecto Mundo” encore un peu plus, mais je pense que ces 3 routes pourraient valoir le même niveau. Je sais que je peux grimper un 9c, mais une voie de ce niveau doit être significativement plus dure que les 9b+ existant, et pour moi “Bibliographie” ne l’est pas. Cela ne veut pas dire que je veux discréditer la performance de quiconque en particulier celle d’Alex, cela reste un incroyable exploit, notamment la première ascension qui requiert d’avantage de facultés mentales et physiques) but je voudrai rester honnête sur ce que j’ai ressenti pendant le processus complet dans “Bibliographie”. et ce n’est juste que mon opinion, j’espère que nous en écouteront d’autres bientôt. J’aurai aimé être la 3ème personne à gravir du 9c mais au fond de mon coeur, je sais que je ne le suis pas encore.”
We suspected a little after a short summer only to work the route before clipping the anchor, the Italian Stefano Ghisolfi took a few hours of reflection and delivered his verdict concerning the grade of “Bibliographie”. He downgrades and suggests 9b+. Here are his words:
“Yesterday and the day before I wanted to focus more on my journey, the climb and the people around the story of Bibliographie, I avoided on purpose talking about grades, but seems inevitable to do so. I took a day to think about it to find the right words. When I started trying Bibliographie I couldn’t imagine I could climb it in one season, watching Alexander Megos video the route seemed impossible and if it took him 60 days, I start projecting it thinking to come back over the years. In the end, I felt good on it from the beginning, found new beta for the crux (switching left and right hand compare to Alex), and new beta for the second crux. I climbed it in a total of 25 climbing days during this 3 months, and I tried to compared it to “Change” and “Perfecto Mundo”, changing my mind every other day. “Change” took me around the same time and Perfecto Mundo a bit more, but I feel all the 3 routes could fit all in the same grade range. I know I can climb a 9c, but for a route to be that grade it needs to be much harder than the existing 9b+s, and Bibliographie for me isn’t. This doesn’t mean I want to belittle the performance of anyone, neither Alex’s or mine, it is still an incredible achievement (especially the first ascent that includes many more hard mental and physical aspects) but I just wanted to be honest about what I felt during the whole process on Bibliographie, and this is just my opinion, hopefully we will listen other soon. I would have been happy to be the third person to have climbed 9c, but I’m my heart I know I’m not (yet)”
Le sujet des décotations abordé par Fred Rouhling et Lucien Martinez ! Dans une vidéo interview en deux parties accordée à Relais Vertical, un des grimpeurs phares des années 90, Fred Rouhling, revient sur plusieurs aspects éthiques de notre activité. D’une part, Fred Rouhling aborde dans un premier volet la polémique autour de la taille des prises et sa vision de l’époque, puisqu’il a ouvert des itinéraires références de la haute-difficulté comme “Hugh” ou “De l’autre côté de ciel” intégralement taillés dans les 90s.
Dans une seconde vidéo, Fred revient sur sa proposition de premier 9b mondial, “Akira” (1995). De manière fort intéressante, Fred explique pourquoi il a proposé 9b et revient sur les controverses qui ont suivi avec d’autres top grimpeurs du moment comme Jibé Tribout ou Dani Andrada. Fin 2020, Seb Bouin, Lucien Martinez puis Joshua Fourteau enchainent la voie et proposent 9a. Une décotation que Fred trouve un peu rude et qu’il ne semble pas digérer, malgré l’évolution du matériel et des méthodes d’entrainement depuis 15 ans, qui expliquent que les séquences difficiles collent davantage avec le style moderne des top grimpeurs actuels. Fred avoue que si d’un côté il a peut-être été naïf et orgueilleux en proposant 9b, d’un autre côté il émet le postulat très personnel que les autres grimpeurs qui ont essayé et répété n’ont pas eu une histoire très claire et sincère quand ils sont venus essayer ou répéter “Akira”. En particulier, Seb Bouin et Lucien Martinez ont pour lui décoté la voie sans véritable sincérité, dans l’esprit de se faire mousser et de le rabaisser. L’interview se termine par une longue et dernière tirade sur le système de cotations qui ne laissera pas indifférent, où Fred explique le côté dangereux de la décote systématique d’itinéraires par certains forts grimpeurs, remettant en question le consensus d’une cotation. Interpellés par ces propos, car sur les 4 répétitions d'”Akira” nous rappelons que 3 grimpeurs ont proposé 9a, ce qui nous semble être une majorité et un consensus, nous avons demandé à Lucien Martinez de réagir aux propos de Fred dans sa dernière vidéo. Lucien a accepté et voici sous la vidéo le droit de réponse de ce dernier.
Lucien Martinez : “Tu m’as demandé de réagir à la deuxième partie de l’interview vidéo de Fred Rouhling. Alors premièrement je voudrais dire que j’ai vraiment bien aimé les deux parties, je les ai écoutées sans m’ennuyer une seule seconde ! Fred n’a pas essayé de faire du politiquement correct et vraiment c’est tout à son honneur. J’ai aussi beaucoup aimé la métaphore du Roi Pêcheur. Pour le reste, je ne vais pas avoir la grossièreté de me justifier bêtement sur ce qui m’est reproché. Par contre, je pense que c’est intéressant de dire un mot sur ce que Fred explique à la fin sur les décotations. En résumé, il dit que la mode est à décoter les voies pour faire parler de soi, que c’est dommageable à la pratique et que ça met en péril le système global des cotations parce que ça empêche de trouver des consensus. Je suis en désaccord total avec ça. Quand on trouve de nouvelles méthodes qui changent franchement la difficulté, quand on s’est posé des questions, qu’on a comparé aux voies de référence qu’on connaît et si on pense que c’est plus facile, c’est normal de décoter, justement pour préserver le système de cotations et ses références du grand n’importe quoi. Malheureusement, ce n’est absolument pas la mode, bien au contraire, la mode est à la prise sans vergogne les cotations les plus hautes car les grimpeurs savent trop bien que, contrairement à ce que dit Fred, décoter revient avant tout minimiser les répercussions de sa propre performance. Il est complètement aberrant et injuste de critiquer les rares grimpeurs (j’insiste bien, ces grimpeurs sont rares !) qui osent décoter les voies et font l’effort de se poser des questions sur ce qu’ils accomplissent, car ils se battent justement pour que le haut niveau en falaise reste crédible ! Pour ma part, quand je fais une perf et que j’ai le sentiment d’avoir fait moins dur que la cotation officielle, si je ne dis rien, j’ai un syndrome de l’imposteur et j’ai la sensation (très justifiée selon moi) d’avoir des honneurs que je ne mérite pas. Quand je ferai mon premier 9a+ ou mon premier 9b, je veux en être fier et ne pas être considéré comme un grimpeur de 9a+ sans en être un réellement. Pour finir, je voudrais quand même préciser que je ne suis pas naïf et que je sais très bien que toutes les décotations ne sont pas faites à des fins louables ; l’histoire a montré qu’elles sont assez souvent des attaques personnelles pour nuire au premier ascensionniste ou à un grimpeur dont ça serait la meilleure perf … De ce fait, je comprends très bien la réaction de Fred sur Akira. Personnellement, je ne décote JAMAIS des voies pour nuire à des gens. C’est même plutôt le contraire : ça m’est déjà arrivé de ne pas oser décoter justement par peur que certaines personnes ne comprennent pas et se vexent.”
En tout cas l’éternel débat sur les cotations à travers l’expérience “Akira” est ici relancé, et en tant que média qui accordons de l’importance aux performances en escalade et donc du crédit aux cotations, il nous semblait intéressant de revenir sur ce sujet. Qu’on y accorde de l’importance ou pas, la cotation est une partie inhérente de notre activité et même si nous sommes convaincus que grimper une voie pour le chiffre n’est pas la meilleure solution pour rester passionné, préférant relater des expériences au travers des performances, il serait quand même naïf de croire qu’on peut grimper à haut niveau en esquivant ce rapport au chiffre.
In a two-part video interview with Relais Vertical, one of the famous climbers of the 90s, Fred Rouhling discusses several ethical aspects of our activity. On the one hand Rouhling addresses in a first part the controversy around the chipping of holds and his vision at the time, since he opened routes of the highest difficulty, such as “Hugh” or “De l ‘autre côté du ciel”, entirely manufactured in the 90s.
In a second video, Fred talks about his grade proposition for the world’s first 9b, “Akira” (1995). In a very interesting way, Fred explains why he proposed 9b and discusses the controversies that followed with other top climbers of the moment such as Jibé Tribout or Dani Andrada. At the end of 2020, Seb Bouin, Lucien Martinez then Joshua Fourteau repeated the route and proposed 9a. A downgrade that Fred finds a little harsh and that he does not seem to digest, despite the evolution of climbing gear and training regimes over the past 15 years, which explains why the difficult sequences are more in keeping with the modern style currently mastered by top climbers. On the one hand Fred admits that if he may have been naive and overzealous in proposing 9b, on the othe he makes the very personal postulate that the climbers who have tried and repeated the route have not had a very clear and sincere story when it came to trying or repeating “Akira”, in particular Seb Bouin and Lucien Martinez, who for him downgraded the route without real sincerity and in the spirit of being recognised for this. The interview ends with a long and final tirade on the grading system that will not leave you indifferent, where Fred explains the dangerous side of the systematic downgrading of routes by strong climbers, questioning the consensus of a grade. Interested in his words, because out on the 4 repetitions of “Akira” 3 climbers proposed 9a, which to us seems like a consensus, we asked Lucien Martinez for his take on Fred’s words. Lucien accepted and here is his right of reply.
Lucien Martinez: “You have asked for my reaction to Part 2 of the video interview of Fred Rhouling (by Relais Vertical). First off, I’d like to say that I’ve really enjoyed the two parts, and I wasn’t bored a second listening to them! Fred didn’t go for PC speech and he should be praised for it. I also really liked the analogy with the King Fisher. As for the rest, I will not be so uncouth as to try and justify what I am accused of. However, I think it would be interesting to say something about what Fred develops at the end regarding downgrading. In short, he says that the prevalent trend consists in downgrading routes in order to garner publicity, that it’s damaging climbing and that it threatens the global grading system since it prevents a consensus to be found. I could not disagree more. When a climber finds new methods, which frankly change the difficulty of a route, when they’ve thought about it a lot, that they have compared that route to the gold standards of that given grade (that they have climbed) and that they think the last one is easier, it’s normal to downgrade. In fact this downgrade is there to actively preserve the grading system and protect its yardsticks from utter chaos. Sadly, what is clearly the current trend is the total opposite: what is fashionable is to pick the higher grade because climbers know all too well – contrary to what Fred says – that downgrading implies, above all, a lessening of one’s performance. It is absolutely unfair and nonsensical to blame the rare climbers (I insist: those climbers are few and far between!) who dare downgrade and really ask themselves hard questions about what they do and achieve, because it is they who fight to keep a smidgen of credibility at the top level! As for me, when I send a hard route that I feel is less hard than the official grade, if I don’t say anything I suffer from the impostor syndrome, and I have the impression (totally justified in my books) of receiving congratulations I do not deserve. The day I send my first 9a+ or 9b, I want to be able to be proud of it, and not be seen as a fake 9a+ climber. Lastly, I’d like to emphasise that I am not naive enough to think that all downgrades are done in all honesty. History has shown that they can sometimes be used as personal attacks in order to discredit the first ascensionist or a climber for whom it is the hardest climb… In this light, I totally understand Fred’s reaction when it comes to Akira. But personally, I NEVER downgrade routes to discredit anyone. It’s in fact rather the contrary: I have sometimes chosen not to downgrade a route fearing that some people would not understand and sulk.”
In any case, the eternal debate on grading system through the “Akira” experience is relaunched here, and as a media which attaches importance to climbing performances and therefore credit to grades, it seemed interesting to us to come back to this topic. Whether we give it importance or not, grades is an inherent part of our activity and although we are convinced that climbing a route for the number is not the best solution to remain passionate, preferring to relate experiences to the through performances; on the other hand, it would be naive to believe that one can climb to a high level in climbing by avoiding this relation to numbers.
La compétitrice italienne Laura Rogora vient d’annoncer ce matin avoir réalisé la seconde ascension de la voie la plus dure de la botte, “Erebor” 9b/+ à Eremo di San Paolo, Arco. Ouverte et libérée par Stefano Ghisolfi en janvier dernier, cette voie offre une escalade très résistante sur prises minuscules avec un double jeté en guise de crux du milieu, avant un pas de bloc sommital dur à négocier. Si la cotation de la voie venait à être confirmée, il s’agirait de la perf’ féminine la plus élevée de tous les temps, puisque jusqu’alors seules Angie Eiter (“Madame Ching”, “La Planta de Shiva”), Julia Chanourdie (“Eagle-4”) et Laura Rogora (“Ali Hulk sit start extension total”) avaient réalisé du 9b.
Italian top climber Laura Rogora just published this morning having climbed Italy’s hardest route with the second ascent of “Erebor”, Eremo Di San Paolo, Arco. Bolted and freed by Stefano Ghisolfi at the beginning of the year, this resistance testpiece on tiny holds offers a double dyno middle crux before a complicated and low percentage top section under the anchor. If the grade is confirmed, it will be the best female rock climbing performance. Only Angie Eiter (“Madame Ching”, “La planta de Shiva”), Julia Chanourdie (“Eagle-4”) and Laura (“Ali Hulk extension total sit start”) have climbed 9b before.
Depuis quelques jours, Rodellar, la mecque de la Sierra de Guarra, est visitée par une équipe slovène de compétiteurs (Lukan, Skofic, Krampl…), avec de belles performances à la clé !
Vita Lukan, 21 ans, en profite pour frapper fort et réaliser la classique de la Gran Boveda, “Geminis” 8b+ à vue ! Cette King line très athlétique de 40 mètres au milieu de la baume déversante offre un marathon de conti sur trous et colos.
Elle déclare sur son compte Instagram : “Cela a été un gros combat, pas uniquement contre les bouteilles mais aussi contre moi-même. C’était dur de rester calme dans la partie sommitale de la king line, là où mon mental commençait à flancher. J’ai toujours eu un rapport amour-haine avec ces longues voies déversantes de Rodellar. Et je ne suis pas habituée à grimper avec des genouillères. On est à la moitié du trip et la motivation est grande pour la suite du séjour.”

Un peu plus bas sur la colline, Domen Skofic s’est adjugé une répétition de la combinaison “Ali Hulk extension total sit start” 9b dans la grotte d’Ali Baba, qu’il a réalisé sans genouillères pour son premier 9b.
“La dernière fois que je suis venu à Rodellar j’ai visité tous les secteurs sauf la grotte d’Ali Baba car je pensais que ça ne valait pas vraiment le coup d’y grimper. Cette fois-ci je voulais connaître l’endroit et au contraire j’ai trouvé la grotte très cool et j’étais très motivé à l’idée d’essayer les movements. Comme je savais que ma forme n’était pas au top, je n’attendais rien de spécial et j’ai juste joué dans la voie. Après 3 jours de travail j’ai assemblé ensemble tous les morceaux et je l’ai réalisé à mon premier vrai essai. Je ne pensais pas que cela irait aussi vite et du coup je suis un peu sceptique sur la cotation. 9b ou pas c’était sympa de reconstituer ce puzzle et de me motiver encore plus pour mes objectifs futurs.”
In the last few days, Rodellar, the climbing mecca from Sierra de Guarra is being visited by a team of strong Slovenian competitors (Lukan, Skofic, Krampl…), with some nice sends to boot!
Vita Lukan, 21, has struk and onsighted the classical king line of Gran Boveda, “Geminis” 8b+! This overhanging 40-meter line offers a stamina challenge on tufas and pockets. Vita described her send on Instagram :
“It was a huge fight not just against the pump but also against myself – it was hard to stay calm in the upper part of 40m long kingline where mind started playing tricks with me. Still have some kind of love-hate relationship with these long and overhanging routes in Rodellar…and I still haven’t gotten used to climb with knee bars. Halfway through our trip and psyche for the rest is high.”

Meanwhile, a little further down the hill, Domen Skofic has repeated “Ali Hulk extension total sit start” 9b, located in Ali Baba cave, without kneepads.
“The last time I visited almost all the sectors except Ali Baba cave because I thought it’s not worth to climb there. This time I said I will at least check the place before I judge and on the contrary I found the cave really cool and I got extremely psyched to try the moves. As I thought my shape is not the best I didn’t expect anything and I just played on the moves. After 3 days of work I brought all the pieces together and today I sent it on my first try. I didn’t expect it’s going to happen that fast and therefore I’m a little bit skeptical about the grade. 9b or not it felt great building this puzzle together and made me even more motivated for my future goals.“
Il n’y a pas que Tom Bolger qui a des projets extrêmes actuellement au secteur Finestra de Margalef ! Le fort falaisiste espagnol Jorge Diaz-Rullo essaie depuis ce début d’été un nouveau projet futuriste, “Cafe Columbia”, une ligne équipée par le colombien Anghelo Bernal Quintero en juin dans l’impressionnant dévers du cirque. Aujourd’hui Jorge vient de réaliser la première ascension de “Cafe Solo”, la première partie du projet qui s’échappe ensuite dans le “facile” sur la gauche avant le pas de bloc sommital du projet principal.
Jorge décrit la voie de la sorte : “Les 3 premières dégaines ne sont pas très dures, mais tu dois rester en tension pour le premier pas de bloc. Un clippage dur puis un crux avec un jeté assez précis de bidoigt à bidoigt, puis 4 autres mouvements pour finir le pas de bloc, un dernier mouvement dynamique, où si tu tombes tu vas par terre car clipper les deux dégaines autour est impossible pour moi. Cela revient à faire un 8c+/9a très court et explosif de 15 mouvements. Ensuite un autre pas de bloc arrive, autour du 8A+ bloc, 6 mouvements sur des petits bidoigts de nouveau qui demandent beaucoup de gainage avec deux mouvements aléatoires qui rendent l’affaire très corsée quand tu arrives dans l’enchainement. S’ajoutent encore 6 mouvements moins durs et qui donnent une petite note rési jusqu’à un repos sur une petite arquée où tu peux délayer pas plus de 3 fois chaque main.”
C’est là que la fin plus facile, “Cafe Solo”, 9b peut être empruntée. Il restera à Jorge de se frapper le pas de bloc sommital pour s’offrir “Cafe Columbia” : ” Après ce repos, il reste une grosse section bloc de 3 dégaines, environ 8A+/B bloc où tu peux tomber à chaque mouvement avec le mouvement le plus difficile qui est au milieu, où tu vas d’une arquée en épaule à une autre avec des pieds loin et mauvais. Il faudra arriver frais au repos pour avoir une chance”.
Après “FRFM”, “Perfecto Mundo” et “Artaburu”, “Mejorando imagen”, “Cafe Solo” se glisse dans les propositions les plus extrêmes de la Mecque catalane. Et “Cafe columbia” sûrement un des projets les plus futuristes au Monde ! Un aperçu dans la vidéo ci-dessous.
Tom Bolger is not the only one to try hard in Raco de La Finestra, Margalef! The strong Spanish rockclimber Jorge Diaz-Rullo is trying since the early summer a futuristic project called “Cafe Columbia”, a line bolted last June by Colombian Anghelo Bernal Quintero in the massive overhang of the crag. Today Jorge freed “Cafe Solo” which is the first part of the project skipping the top boulder of the main project for an easier left finish. Jorge describes the line:
“The first three quickdraws are not very hard but they put you in a tense position for the first boulder. A hard clip and immediately after starts a crux with a very precise dynamic move from one two finger pocket to another, then continue for another 4 hard moves to finish the boulder, and then one last dynamic move, in which if you fall you go to the ground because clipping the two previous quickdraws isnt possible for me.
From what I’ve described, I thought this might be a short and explosive 15 move 8c+/9a. Next, another boulder continues around the 8A+ grade with 6 moves on very short two finger pockets, which requires a lot of body tension, with two very low percentage moves that make it much more difficult from the ground…
After this, there are 6 moves that are not so hard but require endurance, just before reaching the “rest” of the route, a very small crimp where I have to count 3 hand shakes each to manage a little bit of a “rest” before continuing…
That’s at this point you can turn left in an easier finish for climbing “Cafe Solo”. It still stayed to link with the buisiness, the main crux of “Cafe Columbia project” :
“From this “rest” to the end, I think the hardest thing is missing, a long boulder of three quickdraws about 8A+/B aprox boulder, in which at each move you can fall, but specifically with a crux in the middle of pulling from one shoulder crimp to another, with bad and far feet. It’s important to arrive perfect to be able to do it.”
After “FRFM”, “Perfecto Mundo”, “Artaburu”, “Mejorando Imagen”, “Cafe Solo” is one of the hardest proposition of Catalan’s mecca. And “Cafe Columbia” for sure one of the hardest sportclimbing project of the World! Have a look in the video above.
Adam Ondra a décidé de passer un peu de temps à Arco, la ville où il s’est marié début septembre. Et à peine arrivé pour cette sorte de lune de miel, le voilà qui répète Erebor, la ligne équipée et enchainée par son ami Stefano Ghisolfi en janvier de cette année.
La voie, cotée 9b/+, a depuis été répétée par Laura Rogora le mois dernier, faisant d’elle la première femme à ce niveau. Malheureusement pour les deux Italiens, Adam Ondra se prononce pour 9b. Il explique aussitôt être un peu gêné d’ainsi dévaluer la performance de la jeune femme, mais opte pour l’honnêteté et assure que Rogora est capable de bien plus.
Le Tchèque explique avoir trouvé une méthode différente de celle de Ghisolfi (qu’il estime bien à 9b/+!) dans le crux du haut, un peu morphologique mais adaptable quand même. Il a passé un jour sur Erebor en avril, et trois de plus cette fois-ci.
“Un peu de temps”, “Ondra” et “Arco”? On se prend à rêver de quelques étincelles. Ghisolfi va-t-il lui ouvrir son projet actuel ? Le secteur de Laghel, avec son 9c potentiel, va-t-il rester fermé ? Le Tchèque va-t-il sortir le perfo ?
Adam Ondra decided to spend some time in Arco, the town where he got married in early September this year. And no sooner has he arrived on this sort of honeymoon that he clips the anchor of Erebor, the line bolted and FAed by his friend Stefano Ghisolfi in January this year.
The route, graded 9b/+, has since been repeated by Laura Rogora last month, which made her the first woman at that level. Sadly for both Italians, Ondra proposes 9b. He explains being embarrassed to downgrade the young woman’s performance, but goes for honesty and makes it clear that Laura is capable of rather more.
The Czech has found a different sequence to Ghisolfi’s (which he agrees is worth 9b/+) in the top crux: a bit morphology-dependent but with some leeway. He spent a day on it last April , and three this time round.
‘Some time’, ‘Ondra’ and ‘Arco’? One could be forgiven for thinking of fireworks. Will Ghisolfi open his current project to his friend? Will the Laghel sector, with its potential 9c, remain closed? Will Ondra draw his drill?
On le savait, Alex Megos était à Siurana depuis le début du mois. Le mutant allemand vient de réaliser la seconde ascension de “King Capella”, le 9b+ ouvert par le grimpeur britannique Will Bosi le printemps dernier qui se compose de 15 mètres complètement explosifs ! Voici le commentaire d’Alex via les réseaux sociaux :
“C’était la voie pour laquelle je suis venu à Siurana, après l’avoir checkée en mars, just après que Will Bosi a fait la première. Déjà à l’époque je m’étais rendu compte que cela me convenait plutôt bien, alors avec Jenya Kazbekova nous avons décidé de passer quelques semaines en Espagne pour essayer des voies dures. Neuf jours dans la voie et deux steaks plus tard, j’ai pu réaliser la première répétition de cette voie très courte et à doigts. J’ai aussi utilisé une méthode légèrement différente de Will, en prenant une très large pince, une méthode que je juge plus facile que celle de Will. Il ne pouvait pas faire le mouvement comme je l’ai réalisé donc je pense que c’est une préférence personnelle. Très curieux d’entendre de voir ce que d’autres en pensent ! “
Sans se prononcer sur le niveau, Alex réalise une nouvelle voie dure en escalade sportive, lui qui a déjà un impressionnant CV avec le premier 9a à vue de l’histoire, justement à Siurana, les ouvertures de voies en 9b et plus comme “Bibliographie”, “Perfecto Mundo”, “Fight Club”, ou encore une répétition de 9b référence comme “FRFM”.
As we know, Alex Megos has been in Siurana since the beginning of the month. The German beast has just made the second ascent of “King Capella”, the 9b + opened by British climber Will Bosi last spring, which offers 15 meters of completely explosive climbing! Here is Alex’s comment via social media:
“That was the route I came to Siurana for, after checking it out once last March, right after Will Bosi made the FA. Already back then I realized that it suites me pretty well so together with Jenya Kazbkova we decided to spend a few weeks in Spain to have enough time for hard routes. After nine days on the route and two splits later I could get the first repeat of this very short and very crimpy test piece. I also used slightly different beta than Will taking a very wide pinch, which felt a little easier to me than what Will did. He couldn’t do the move the way I did it though, so I guess it’s personal preference. Very curious to hear what other people think!“
Without commenting on the grade, Alex just did a new hard route, he who already has an impressive CV with the first 9a onsight, precisely in Siurana, the first ascent of routes in 9b and more like “Bibliographie”,” Perfecto Mundo “,”Fight Club “, or even a repetition of famous the 9b from Chris Sharma, ” FRFM “.
De nouveau un peu d’escalade sportive en Espagne, avec trois extrêmes répétitions en Catalogne !
*** Jorge Diaz-Rullo réalise la 3ème ascension de “Samfaina” à Margalef, qui n’est autre que son projet secondaire de Finestra après “Cafe Colombia”. La voie est plutôt continue avec deux mouvements très durs sur bidoigts. Libérée par Chris Sharma en 2010 et immédiatement répétée par Ramon Julian, cette voie est restée ensuite sans nouvelle ascension pendant plus d’une décennie. Jorge propose 9a+ pour “Samfaina”, la jugeant plus dure que les autres 9a qu’il a réalisés dans ce mur.
*** “PapiChulo” de nouveau répété : quelques semaines après Mathieu Bouyoud, c’est cette fois-ci le grimpeur autrichien Stefan Scherz qui clippe le relais. Un peu plus de 2 mois après s’être cassé le pied et s’être donné comme défi de revenir plus fort pour réussir son premier 9a+, Stefan Scherz a tenu son pari à Oliana ! Âgé de seulement 20 ans et avec déjà quelques voies en 9ème degré à son actif, le compétiteur habitant Innsbruck semble en pleine progression. Jakob Schubert va commencer à regarder dans ses rétroviseurs !
*** Quelques jours après “King Capella”, Alex Megos réalise la seconde ascension de l’autre voie extrême du secteur Capella de Siurana libérée ce printemps par Will Bosi, “Furia de Jabali” 9b. Toujours sans se prononcer sur le niveau, Alex annonce 7 jours de travail et 3 gros steaks notamment dus à des conditions très froides avant sa réussite.

*** A new repeat of “papichulo” : few weeks after Mathieu Bouyoud, Austrian climber Stefan Scherz just clipped the anchor of Oliana’s kingline, “Papichulo”. 20 years old and few 9a’s under his belt, the competitor from Inssbruck seems to be in huge progression. Jakob Schubert will start to have a look in the mirror…
*** Few days after “King Capella”, Alex Megos is finishing the business in Capella sector of Siurana with “Furia de Jabali”, second ascent. Freed this spring by British climber Will Bosi, this short and sharp line took to Alex 7 days of projecting and 3 splits of his fingers due to very cold weather.
Quelques jours après Jakob Schubert, c’est au tour d’Alex Megos de réussir le court 9b du secteur éponyme de Siurana, “La capella”. Il complète ainsi la trilogie de voies évaluées autour du 9b du secteur avec “King Capella” et “Furia de Jabali”
Voici son commentaire suite à sa croix : “Je l’ai trouvé dure pour être honnête. J’ai eu pas mal de problèmes au mouvement d’inversée en photo et je suis tombé là pendant quelques jours. Il semblerait qu’il y ait un peu de confusion concernant les cotations de secteur Capella de Siurana donc je vais écrire un post pour montrer comment c’est dur et une question de ressenti personnel quand il s’agit d’évaluer la difficulté des voies. Mais qu’importe la cotation, c’était un challenge fun et sympa.
Etant donné qu’Alex est le seul avec Will Bosi à avoir répété les 3 voies les plus dures des lieux, son avis sera intéressant. Voici en bonus la vidéo de son ascension de “Furia de Jabali”. Concernant “La capella”, c’est la 6ème ascension de la voie après Ondra, Ghisolfi, Woods, Bosi et Schubert.
Few days after Jakob Schubert, ALex Megos signed a repeat of short and powerful 9b “La capella” in Siurana. he completes the trilogy of the 3 hard routes around 9b of this sector, with “Furia de Jabali” and “King Capella”. Here is his comment:
“This one felt very hard to me if I’m honest. I had a lot of trouble with this undercling move on the picture and fell there quite a few days. Looks like there is a bit of confusion about the grades here at the Capella sector and I’ll also write a post to show how hard and how individual grading and difficulties of routes can be. No matter the grade though, it was fun and a good challenge.”
Since Alex is the only one with Will Bosi to have rehearsed the 3 toughest routes around, his opinion will be interesting. Here is as a bonus the video of his ascent of “Furia de Jabali”. Regarding “La capella”, it is the 6th ascent of the route after Ondra, Ghisolfi, Woods, Bosi and Schubert.
Stefano Ghisolfi vient de réaliser hier la première ascension d’un nouveau projet extrême à Eremo di San Paolo, Arco avec “The Lonely Mountain” ! Cette voie n’est autre que la directe de sortie de “Erebor” (autour du 9b) qu’il avait réalisée en janvier dernier. C’est bien parce qu’il n’arrivait pas à cocher “The Lonely Mountain” que Stefano avait rajouté un point pour une variante de sortie plus facile et ainsi proposer “Erebor”. “The Lonely Mountain” est la première voie que Stefano a 100% équipée, en juin 2020, c’est donc une satisfaction personnelle d’ainsi boucler le processus démarré il y a 36 mois.
“Après avoir réalisé “Erebor”, je me suis rendu compte que la version originelle était possible et j’ai commencé à essayer la section du milieu qui est dure et indépendante à cette voie, avec des mouvements torrides et un dynamique sur une petite arquée. Cela me semblait dur au début mais j’ai pas mal changé mes méthodes dans chaque section et je l’ai finalement réussi. Bien que ce soit plus dur de lui proposer une cotation, je pourrais suggérer un 9b symbolique même si je trouve cela plus dur qu'”Erebor”.”
C’est donc déjà la 9ème voie en 9b et plus de Stefano qui, sans compter la première de “Lapsus” et la répétition de “La Capella” (qui pourraient être un peu moins dures), a déjà accroché à son tableau de chasse trois 9b+ (“Perfecto Mundo”, “Bibliographie” et “Change”), des répétitions de “Stoking the fire”, “FRFM”, “One slap”, “Queen line” et la première ascension de “Erebor”. À coup sûr un des grimpeurs parmi les plus expérimentés en matière d’extrême sur la planète !
Yesterday, Stefano Ghisolfi claimed the first ascent of an extreme project at Eremo di San Paolo, Arco, Italy with “The Lonely Mountain”! This route is the direct exit of “Erebor” (around 9b), a route Stefano established last January. Stefano wasn’t able to send this directissima, added a bolt to the left and created “Erebor”. “The Lonely Mountain” is special for him because it was the first route he bolted (in June 2020) so it marks the end of a 36-month process.
“Ended the year just as it started, with the ascent of the very first route I bolted in my life. And this is actually the first version I bolted in June 2020, it looked impossible at first so I added a bolt on the left and climbed “Erebor” last January. After that, I figured out the original version was possible and started trying the middle section, which is hard and exclusive of this route, adding some spicy moves with a dynamic from a very tiny crimp. It felt very hard at the beginning, then I changed almost all the betas in every section and finally climbed it today. And it’s even harder to grade it, so I can suggest a symbolic 9b, even if it is harder than “Erebor”.“
It’s Stefano’s 9th route in the 9b range and above, without counting “Lapsus” and “La Capella” as they may not be as hard as first thought. Stefano has climbed three 9b+ (“Perfecto Mundo”, “Bibliographie” and “Change”), repeated “FRFM”, “Stoking the fire”, “One Slap”, “Queen line” and did the first ascent of “Erebor”. For sure one of the strongest rock climbers in the world!
Adam Ondra a réalisé une belle croix à la maison juste avant Noël la première ascension de “Taurus”, 9b, un projet très bloc qu’il avait sur la falaise de Byci Skala proche de Brno en République Tchèque. Les difficultés principales sont contenues dans les 9 premiers mouvements de la voie qu’Adam estime autour du 8C+ bloc (!) avant un 8b final qu’il l’aura fait tomber une fois deux jours auparavant à cause de l’onglée. Adam estime que ce pas de bloc de départ est le problème de bloc où il a passé le plus de temps en escalade… La falaise fermant temporairement pour nidification le 1er janvier, Adam parachève ce projet au bon moment !
Il commente sur les réseaux vidéo à l’appui : “La principale difficulté réside dans la tenue d’un plat main gauche incliné à 45° sur un calcaire zéro adhérence et sortir du talon-pointe. Ensuite tu choppes un rasoir teigneux main droite, une inver plate main gauche et un dynamique final sur une bonne prise. À la fois puissant et technique en même temps, très à conditions et très peu inspirant ? Je ne pense pas, j’ai apprécié le processus. Je suis content d’avoir fini les projets de la partie basse de Byci Skala, la prochaine saison l’heure est venue de faire un tour au niveau supérieur. Les lignes sont toutes aussi bloc mais plus longues et probablement plus dures !”
“Taurus” serait la seconde proposition extrême du pays, Adam ayant déjà libéré “Vasil Vasil” 9b+ à Sloup, fin 2013.
Adam Ondra climbing at Byci Skala
Adam Ondra just added a new tick at home just before Christmas with the first ascent of “Taurus”, 9b, a very boudery project at Byci Skala, Brno, Czech Republic. The main difficulties are located in the first 9 moves at around 8C+ boulder (!) before a final 8b where he fell once 2 days before due to numb fingers. Adam was happy to finish it by the end of the year, because the crag closes on January 1st due to bird nesting.
Adam comments the climb: “The first 9 moves are surely an 8C+ boulder problem and if I consider it a boulder problem, it is probably the one that took me the most time ever. The whole crag closes on January 1 due to the birds nesting, so the pressure was real! The whole climb revolves around an insane left-hand sloper, which is around 45 degrees with zero friction limestone and getting the left heel-toe-cam out. Then getting one of the most heinous razorblade right hand, flat undercling left hand and final dyno into a good hold. So powerful and technical at the same time, very condition-dependent and very uninspiring? Well, I do not think so, I enjoyed the process a lot. I am happy I finished most of the projects in the lower tier of Byci skala and next season it will be time to finally take a look at the upper tier. Those lines are equally bouldery, but just much longer and probably much harder!“
“Taurus” is the second hardest proposition in the country. You will recall that the Czech phenom freed “Vasil Vasil” (9b+) in 2013, unrepeated to this day.
On avait laissé le crack Autrichien à Siurana après sa réalisation du triptyque du secteur “La Capella”. C’est à Eremo di San Paolo, Arco en Italie que Jakob Schubert refait surface ce début d’année avec une nouvelle réalisation éclair, celle de “Erebor” 9b. C’est déjà la 4ème ascension de la voie après Ghisolfi, Rogora et Ondra. Il est arrivé une petite mésaventure à Jakob, qui, a cassé une prise de pied en crochetage talon juste sous la chaine, ce qui lui a valu un beau vol plané. Il a empoché la voie à l’essai suivant en trouvant une méthode alternative plus dure à cet endroit, mais ne changeant pas le niveau. Au vu de la facilité avec laquelle il répète les voies en 9a+ et 9b ici et là (9 réalisations en 9b et +) on serait curieux de le voir sortir des standards et de sa zone de confort en falaise, en essayant des voies plus dures, moins répétées ou proposer lui aussi des premières ascensions vraiment extrêmes. We left the Austrian machine in Siurana after his send of the triptych of the sector “La Capella”. He is back again this weekend in Eremo di San Paolo, Arco, Italy with a new quick send of “Erebor” 9b. It is already the 4th ascent of the route after Ghisolfi, Rogora and Ondra. A little mishap happened to Jakob, who broke a foothold while pressing hard on a right heelhook just below the anchor and as a result took a good whipper. He immediately found a new, harder, beta which in his eyes doesn’t change the grade, and climbed the route at his next go. In view of Jakob’s margin when it comes to routes in the 9a+ and 9b range (9 sends of 9b and +) we would be curious to see him venture away from the established standards of rock climbing and out of his comfort zone, with harder routes that are also less repeated, or by claiming extreme first ascents. En fin d’année dernière, Jorge Diaz-Rullo libérait “Café Solo” 9b dans l’impressionnant dévers de La Finestra à Margalef. Cette voie est la variante de sortie facile de gauche de son super projet “Café Columbia” qui propose une sortie plus directe avec un crux supplémentaire autour du 8B bloc après les difficultés de “Café Solo”. At the end of 2021, Jorge Diaz-Rullo freed “Café Solo” 9b in the massive wall of Raco de La Finestra, Margalef, Catalunya. This route is the easier left exit of his super-project “Café Columbia” with a direct exit and a top crux around 8B boulder after the difficulties of the 9b… In the video below, follow Jorge in his first ascent and discover the difficulties of his main project.
