“Arenauta” 9b, c’est fait pour Ghisolfi ! Le site de Sperlonga, sur la côte entre Rome et Naples, abrite une grotte connue pour ses lignes corsées que Stefano a déjà visitée plusieurs fois, la dernière il y a de ça huit ans pour “Grandi Gesti” 8c+.
En ce début 2022, il est retourné dans la grotte pour travailler un vieux projet quasiment horizontal sur 20m, équipé par Giuliano Tarquini en 2002, que Laura Rogora aurait essayé en vain. Lors de sa première visite, Ghisolfi s’est rendu compte que ses mollets n’encaissaient pas la charge pour bloquer les genoux et délayer. Un problème qui rappelle Ondra dans “Silence”, tiens.
C’est lors de la deuxième fournée, les mollets dûment raffermis, que l’Italien est venu à bout de la voie, qu’il surnomme “Arenauta” et propose à 9b. On notera quand même que dans son échelle de cotations perso, Stefano en fait un “Tribolo ma passo” (je galère mais je passe?).
Si la cotation est confirmée, “Arenauta” deviendrait la voie la plus dure des sud et centre de la Botte.
Pour une idée de la voie, voici la vidéo d’un essai vieille de quelques jours en plus de la vidéo qu’on vous avait déjà relayé il y a une semaine. Après “Erebor” et “Lonely Planet” (sans oublier “One Slap”, “Queen line” ou “Lapsus”), Stefano continue de proposer des premières ascensions extrêmes en Italie, et de dessiner les contours du haut-niveau dans son pays.
“Arenauta” 9b, first ascent by Ghisolfi! The Sperlonga crag, on the coast between Rome and Naples, houses a famous cave known for its hard lines that Stefano has visited a few times, the last 8 years ago for ‘Grandi Gesti’ 8c+.
In early 2022, the Italian returned to the cave to check out an old project consisting of a virtually horizontal 20m-long roof, bolted by Giuliano Tarquini in 2002, that Laura Rogora has apparently tried, in vain. During his first visit, Ghisolfi realised his calves weren’t able to sustain the effort necessary to kneebar and shake out. An issue reminiscent of Ondra in ‘Silence’.
It is on his return, his calves duly prepared, that the Arco man freed the project, to which he gave the name ‘Arenauta’ and proposed as 9b. Let it be known that in his personal grading scale, Stefano gave it ‘Tribolo ma passo’ (I struggle but I send?).
If the grade is confirmed, ‘Arenauta’ would be the hardest line in central and southern Italy.

After ‘Erebor’ and ‘Lonely Planet’ (not to mention ‘One Slap’, ‘Queen line’ or ‘Lapsus’), Ghisolfi continues to churn out extreme first ascents in Italy, and to shape the top level in his home country.
Adam Ondra a décidé de passer un peu de temps à Arco, la ville où il s’est marié début septembre. Et à peine arrivé pour cette sorte de lune de miel, le voilà qui répète Erebor, la ligne équipée et enchainée par son ami Stefano Ghisolfi en janvier de cette année.
La voie, cotée 9b/+, a depuis été répétée par Laura Rogora le mois dernier, faisant d’elle la première femme à ce niveau. Malheureusement pour les deux Italiens, Adam Ondra se prononce pour 9b. Il explique aussitôt être un peu gêné d’ainsi dévaluer la performance de la jeune femme, mais opte pour l’honnêteté et assure que Rogora est capable de bien plus.
Le Tchèque explique avoir trouvé une méthode différente de celle de Ghisolfi (qu’il estime bien à 9b/+!) dans le crux du haut, un peu morphologique mais adaptable quand même. Il a passé un jour sur Erebor en avril, et trois de plus cette fois-ci.
“Un peu de temps”, “Ondra” et “Arco”? On se prend à rêver de quelques étincelles. Ghisolfi va-t-il lui ouvrir son projet actuel ? Le secteur de Laghel, avec son 9c potentiel, va-t-il rester fermé ? Le Tchèque va-t-il sortir le perfo ?
Adam Ondra decided to spend some time in Arco, the town where he got married in early September this year. And no sooner has he arrived on this sort of honeymoon that he clips the anchor of Erebor, the line bolted and FAed by his friend Stefano Ghisolfi in January this year.
The route, graded 9b/+, has since been repeated by Laura Rogora last month, which made her the first woman at that level. Sadly for both Italians, Ondra proposes 9b. He explains being embarrassed to downgrade the young woman’s performance, but goes for honesty and makes it clear that Laura is capable of rather more.
The Czech has found a different sequence to Ghisolfi’s (which he agrees is worth 9b/+) in the top crux: a bit morphology-dependent but with some leeway. He spent a day on it last April , and three this time round.
‘Some time’, ‘Ondra’ and ‘Arco’? One could be forgiven for thinking of fireworks. Will Ghisolfi open his current project to his friend? Will the Laghel sector, with its potential 9c, remain closed? Will Ondra draw his drill?
Après avoir exploré l’Islande en compagnie de son compatriote Stefano Ghisolfi et les autres athlètes de North Face, Jacopo Larcher a retrouvé son autre “tribe” à Valle dell’Orco, Italie. À la fin de ce rassemblement tout le monde est rentré au bercail, sauf Jacopo. Motivé par une météo automnale parfaite, l’Italien en a profité pour libérer deux projets, de trad of course. Voici pour votre plaisir le récit de ses ouvertures.
“Après un période d’ouvertures en salle éreintante, rien de mieux que deux semaines de van life et de granit dans une vallée bourrée de lignes et de potentiel! Lors de la deuxième semaine d’octobre, j’ai conduit à Valle dell’Orco pour participer au rassemblement des athlètes La Sportiva, avec dans l’idée de grimper un peu après. Quand tout le monde quitta la vallée, le temps était trop beau pour partir moi aussi et, après notre expédition au Pakistan, j’avais vraiment hâte de me remettre au trad. Pendant le rassemblement on nous donna un petit topo avec d’intéressants projets, de longue date et plus récents, et je me suis empressé d’aller les voir!
Babsi avait dû rentrer à la maison à cause du travail, donc je suis resté avec Olli (notre chien) et j’ai grimpé soit seul soit avec les locaux Andrea et Simone, qui m’ont très gentiment autorisé à garer le van chez eux et m’ont vraiment fait me sentir chez moi (encore merci!).
Je me suis mis à travailler deux lignes bien sympa mais totalement différentes. La première était un vieux projet d’Adriano Trombetta, courte et très “British”, la seconde une fissure raide et athlétique située dans un secteur récemment développé par Andrea, Simone et Marzio (Nardi). J’ai vraiment aimé que les voies soient si différentes, demandant des techniques opposées. L’une était moins dure au niveau technique mais comportait un risque de retour au sol vers les 10 mètres: l’autre était sans danger mais largement plus difficile, techniquement parlant. J’ai trouvé bien qu’elles demandent à peu près la même quantité de travail mais des approches différentes. Pour l’une j’ai dû comprendre comment la grimper et bien forcer pour la finir, alors que pour l’autre j’ai dû pas mal bosser en moulinette afin d’être sûr de ne pas chuter au mauvais endroit lors de l’enchainement: la beauté et la variété du trad!
Le 24 octobre, après quelques jours passés à nettoyer les prises et trouver mes méthodes ainsi que les placements de protection, j’ai réussi à faire la première ascension de “Blood Diamond”, la fissure bien punchy au secteur Diamante (diamant). La protection y est toujours bonne, mais placer le matériel en tête ajoute clairement du piment au crux. Les mouvements sont tout simplement géants! Des pieds pourris, de gros blocages et de bonnes compressions en haut… un bijou je vous dis! À mon avis, c’est une des lignes les plus dures que j’ai faites à Orco jusqu’ici.
Le lendemain, ce fut le tour de l’autre projet. Comme je l’ai dit, Adriano Trombetta avait découvert cette ligne il y a des années et eut la belle idée de l’essayer sans l’équiper. Adriano était un vrai pionnier d’Orco (entre autres!), il y a établi de nombreuses voies et beaucoup de projets; malheureusement il a été emporté par une avalanche en 2017, mais son esprit habite toujours la vallée, ainsi que les souvenirs de ses proches!
La voie se trouve sur un gros bloc au pied de Sergent. Elle commence en suivant une rampe de plats sur une proue jusqu’à une bonne écaille, où on place des micro friends avant d’attaquer le crux. Après quelques prises on atteint une bonne réglette, sur laquelle j’ai décidé de placer une protection; le placement semble ok, mais la prise est une écaille un peu fragile, qui casserait probablement en cas de grosse chute dessus. Pendant l’enchainement j’ai essayé d’assurer le crochet avec un morceau de cordelette raccordé à un coinceur plus bas pour empêcher qu’il ne bouge. La section suivante est technique sur petites réglettes, et finit par des mouvements aléatoires jusqu’à une grosse écaille, sur laquelle on peut enfin placer du matériel supplémentaire avant la partie finale, plus facile. Pour cette ligne la grimpe n’est pas trop difficile (autour de 8a), mais l’association “mouvements aléatoires” et “risque de retour au sol” la rend pimentée! À titre personnel, j’aime beaucoup la forme du bloc et la ligne, c’est pourquoi je voulais vraiment la travailler.
Je n’aurais pas pu imaginer de meilleure conclusion pour ce trip à Orco! Je n’ai pas eu la chance de rencontrer Adriano, mais cette ligne est clairement un hommage à ce grimpeur et sa vision de l’escalade! J’ai décidé de l’appeler “Shikantaza” (“Le Projet Tromba”).

After exploring Iceland with his fellow countryman Stefano Ghisolfi and other North Face athletes, Jacopo Larcher met with his other ‘tribe’ in Valle dell’Orco, Italy. At the end of this meet every one went home but Larcher. Psyched by perfect autumn weather, the Italian set out to free two trad projects. Here is Jacopo’s write-up for your reading pleasure.
‘After a busy route setting period there is nothing like 2 weeks of van life and granite climbing in a valley full of climbs and potential for new ones! The second week of October I drove to Valle dell’Orco to attend the La Sportiva athlete summit, with the idea of spending some more days there after the event. At the end of the meeting everyone left the valley, but the weather forecast looked too perfect for leaving too and, after our expedition to Pakistan, I was really looking forward to do some trad climbing. During the meeting we got a little topo with some interesting new and old projects, so I immediately went to check them out!
Babsi had to go home as she had some work to do, so I remained with Olli (our dog) and I climbed mostly on my own or with the locals Andrea and Simone, who warmly welcomed me to camp at their place and really made me feel at home (thanks again!).
I started woking on two cool, but completely different lines. The first one was an old project of Adriano Trombetta, a short and very “British” route, the second one a steep and powerful crack located in a crag freshly developed by Andrea, Simone and Marzio (Nardi). I particularly liked the fact that the routes were very different and required completely different skills. One was definitely not as hard technically, but quite dangerous and with a potential ground fall from about 10 meters; the other was safe but technically way harder. I liked how both routes required a similar amount of work, but yet a different approach. On one I had to understand how to climb and try hard for sending it, while I had to often practice and top rope the other one in order to be sure to avoid to fall to the ground while eventually leading it: the beauty and variety of trad climbing!
On the 24th of October, after a few days spent brushing and figuring out the moves and the gear, I managed to make the FA of the “Blood Diamond”, a steep and powerful crack situated at the Diamante (Diamond) crag. The gear on this one is always good, but placing it on lead definitely adds a little extra to the crux. The moves are simply amazing! Poor footholds, big lock offs and compression climbing on top… a real gem! Personally I think this is the hardest one I’ve done in Orco so far.
The following day was the turn of the other project. As I mentioned before, Adriano Trombetta discovered the line years ago and had the vision of tying to climb it without bolting it. Adriano was a real pioneer in Orco (and not only!) where he established a lot of routes and had a lot of projects; he tragically passed away in 2017 caught in an avalanche, but his spirit lives on in the valley and in the memories of his friends!
The route is located on a big boulder at the base of Sergent; it starts following a sloper rail on a prow until a good flake, where you place some micro cams before setting off for the crux section. After a few moves you reach a good crimp, on which I decided to place a cliff as protection; the placement looks good, but the hold is a loose flake, which would probably break in case of a big fall on it. I tensioned (on lead) the hook with a piece of cord to a lower cam for avoiding it to move. The next section involves some technical moves and small crimps and ends with some insecure moves to a big flake, where you can finally place some more gear before the easier top out. The climbing is definitely not so hard (8a-ish), but the combination of insecure moves and a possible groundfall make it spicy! I personally really liked the shape of the block and the line, that’s why I absolutely wanted to climb it; I couldn’t have wished for a better end of my trip to Orco! I’d never had the chance to meet Adriano, but this one is an obvious tribute to himself and his vision! I decided to call it “Shikantaza” (aka. “The Tromba project”).
A big thanks goes to Andrea and Simone from the hut “Le Fonti” for the help, the belay, the work… but most of all for the warm welcome and the good times! I already can’t wait to go back to Orco, the place is so beautiful and there is such big potential for new lines!’
En novembre 2020 une voie extrême “préhistorique” voyait ses premières répétitions: “Akira”, par Seb Bouin et Lucien Martinez, alors qu’elle prenait la poussière depuis un quart de siècle. Un an plus tard, de l’autre côté du Brexit l’Écossais Will Bosi sortait le plumeau pour une autre voie bien ridée, libérée par Steve McClure un peu avant sa naissance il y a 23 ans : “Mutation“.
Ce qui est vrai de l’une est, mutatis mutandis, vrai de l’autre : deux voies vraiment dures mais pour des raisons différentes, et surtout enfantées par des pères bien distincts. “Akira” connaîtra une décote sévère, de 9b à 9a, alors que Will Bosi propose 9a+ au lieu de 9a pour “Mutation”, avouant dans le même souffle que si d’aventure un répétiteur futur suggérait 9b, il ne s’en étoufferait pas.
“Mutation” consiste en une extension d'”Evolution”, un 8c ouvert par Jerry Moffat en 1995 et recoté 8c+ depuis. Loin du profil d'”Akira” ou des voies répétées ou libérées par Bosi en Espagne en début d’année, “Mutation” est peu déversante et sa difficulté première vient de la taille misérable des réglettes, entre 6 à 8mm, notamment dans la partie haute où leurs formes biscornues demandent une précision chirurgicale. On peut le constater ici:
Sharma, Megos et Ondra l’ont tous essayée, en vain. Certainement ces monstres de l’escalade n’y ont pas passé les 4 années investies par Bosi, mais le carnet de visite a tout de même de la gueule.
Face à cette engeance, Will Bosi pourrait sembler sorti de nulle part. Toutefois Bosi, compétiteur expérimenté, fait depuis plusieurs années parler la poudre en extérieur outre-Manche. “Rainshadow” en 8 sessions à 17 ans; “Hubble” en 6 pour ses 18 printemps ; plus jeune britannique dans le 9a et le 9b (avec “La Capella” en 2020), et ouvreur de “King Capella” qu’il soumet à 9b+. Le bloc naturel n’est pas en reste: Bosi vient d’enchainer “Foundation’s Edge” 8C en deux petites heures, et espère rapidement se tester sur un 8C+ de référence.
D’une réserve et d’une modestie toutes British, peu enclin au star system, sa cotation de “King Capella” reste naturellement à confirmer, tout comme celle de “Mutation”, mais il est fort à parier que si erreur il y a, elle aura au moins été honnête.

A year later, on the other side of Brexit the Scot Will Bosi got his own duster out for another tough oldie, freed just before his birth 23 years ago by Steve McClure: “Mutation“.
What is true of one is, mutatis mutandis, true of the other: two very hard routes but for different reasons, and also brought into this world by two very distinct fathers. “Akira” would meet with a very sharp downgrade, from 9b to 9a, whereas Will Bosi is suggesting 9a+ instead of the original 9a. He also admitted that if a repeater was to announce 9b, he wouldn’t be overly surprised.
“Mutation” is an extension of “Evolution”, a Jerry Moffat 8c opened in 1995, but upgraded to 8c+ since. Far from the profile of “Akira” or even the extreme routes repeated and opened by Will in Spain earlier this year, “Mutation” is not very overhanging and its primary difficulty consists in the thinness of the crimps, between 6 and 8mm, especially in the upper section where their broken-up shapes require surgical accuracy, as can be seen in the video above.
Sharma, Megos and Ondra have all tried it, in vain. Sure, these climbing demi-gods haven’t spent 4 years on it like Bosi, but the visitor’s book is not too shabby all the same.
Comparatively, Will Bosi could seem the odd-one-out. But Bosi, an experienced competitor already, has been tearing it up outdoors for a while across the Channel. “Rainshadow” in 8 sessions aged 17; “Hubble” in 6 a year later; youngest Brit at 9a and 9b (“La Capella” in 2020), and the first to propose 9b+ for his FA of “King Capella”. Not that Bosi shies away from outdoor bouldering either: he has just topped “Foundation’s Edge” 8C in two miserly hours, and hopes to quickly test himself on a reference 8C+.
With his all so British reserve and modesty, seemingly uninterested in the star system, his grading of “King Capella” is of course yet to be confirmed, as is his proposition for “Mutation”, but it’s safe to say that if he is mistaken, it will be an honest mistake.
Une news pour une 5ème ascension? Non, une news pour une jolie voie à l’histoire intéressante, Empath, à l’occasion de la sortie de la video de Keenan Takahashi. En octobre 2020, Carlo Traversi signait la première de cette ligne de granite inhabituelle de Tahoe, USA, et la cotait 5.15a (9a+). Quelques jours plus tard, le reste de l’équipe en faisait de même, Jimmy Webb (qui avait repéré la ligne) chipant la première répétition à Daniel Woods (3ème ascension).
Les colonnettes et fissures plus ou moins fuyantes de Empath ont ensuite attisé la curiosité des Wide Boyz (Pete Whittaker et Tom Randall) qui dans une vidéo se demandaient si des techniques de fissure ne permettraient pas de simplifier une méthode d’origine assez contraignante. On se souvient que Pete avait déjà essayé de sortir le crux de Silence (V15) avec des méthodes de fissure.
Alors que Nathaniel Coleman faisait le siège d’Empath en préparation des JO (4ème), au printemps de cette année Keenan se mit en tête d’apporter son nom à la liste des croiteurs, travaillant la voie avec Paige Claassen et Pablo Hammack, et empochait la cinquième ascension en mai. On peut les voir à l’oeuvre dans cette video juste sortie du four:

Empath a la cote, et elle a de quoi. Ethan Pringle s’y colle et clippe le relais la veille de la septième par un ado de 17 ans, Connor Herson, lequel partage les idées des Wide Boyz. Sortant l’arsenal des meilleurs trad-eurs, le jeunot plie la voie en 5 essais seulement, et sans genouillères, gants ni bande.
Herson ne s’est pas prononcé sur la difficulté de cette belle ligne, mais Pringle oui, qui propose une petite décote à 5.14+ (9a). Et apparemment personne n’a crié au scandale, ce qui est rafraichissant.
A piece of news for a 5th ascent? No, but for a lovely route with an interesting story, Empath, on the occasion of Keenan Takahashi‘s send video. In October 2020, Carlo Traversi claimed the first ascent of this line on unusual granite in Tahoe, USA, and graded it 5.15a (9a+). A few days later, the rest of the crew followed in his footsteps with Jimmy Webb (who had spotted the line) taking the first repetition off of Daniel Woods (3rd).
The tufas and flaring cracks of Empath then piqued the curiosity of the Wide Boyz (Pete Whittaker and Tom Randall) who in a video explicitly wondered if crack techniques could be used to simplify the rather taxing original beta. You will remember that Pete had already tried to complete the V15 crux of Silence this way.
While Nathaniel Coleman laid siege on Empath as training for the Olympics (4th), in the Spring of this year Keenan decided to add his name to the list of ascensionists, working it along with Paige Claassen and Pablo Hammack. He made the 5th ascent in May, and we can see them at work in the just-released video above.
Empath is in vogue, it’s understandable. Ethan Pringle is next in line and clips the chains (6th) the day before a 17 year-old teenager, Connor Herson, follows suit. Sharing the same ideas as the Wide Boyz, Connor used trad climbing techniques to send the route in 5 teeny attempts, without kneepads, cloves or tape at that.
Herson did not comment on the grade but Pringle did, and proposed a slight downgrade to 5.14+ (9a). Apparently no one has cried foul yet, which is refreshing.
