Deux années après la première ascension de “Bibliographie”, le mutant allemand continue de proposer des premières ascensions extrêmes sur la falaise mythique de Céüse ! Cette fois, Alex vient de réussir la première ascension d’un projet équipé par Chris Sharma en 2012 au secteur Face de Rat, “Ratstaman Vibrations”. Essayée entre autres par Lucien Martinez, Seb Bouin et Charles Albert, cette voie requiert une escalade particulièrement puissante au milieu du panneau très déversant quasi dépourvu de volumes.
Alex commente via Instagram :
“J’ai essayé un coup la voie la première fois que je suis venu à Céüse, en 2014. Puis en 2017 je suis investi dans “Bibliographie” qui m’a pris quelques saisons. En 2021 j’ai mis un autre essai dans “Ratstaman Vibrations” et je l’ai réalisée en 3 parties au 2ème jour, et je ne suis pas revenu jusqu’à il y a 3 semaines. Je suis arrivé juste après la coupe du monde de Chamonix, et après 5 jours dedans, j’étais proche de faire la voie, mais je n’ai pas pu concrétiser. La coupe du monde de Briançon a agi comme une pause bienvenue, et après une semaine de compète et d’entrainement sans faire la fameuse marche d’approche je suis revenu à Céüse. Le premier jour de mon retour je me suis senti très bien, et j’ai réalisé la voie à mon second jour ! “Ratstaman est une voie mythique pour moi. Équipée par Chris Sharma il y a longtemps sur une des meilleures falaises au Monde, essayée par pas mal de forts grimpeurs, mais toujours pas réalisée depuis ces années. Pour sûr une des meilleures voies que j’ai grimpées dans le niveau 9b.”

Two years after the first ascent of “Bibliographie”, Alex Megos is back in Céüse for some business with a new extreme first ascent. This time, Alex just freed an old project bolted by Chris Sharma (in 2012) in Face de Rat overhang, “Ratstaman Vibrations”. Tried by strong climbers like Lucien Martinez, Seb Bouin and Charles Albert, this route is offers a really powerful climbing in a massive overhang without volumes. ALex comments via his Instagram account :

“Already the first time I came to Ceüse back in 2014 I had a look at this route, but never decided to actually try. I got busy with Bibliographie in 2017, which took me a few seasons to finish.
In 2021 I gave Ratstaman another go and climbed it in three parts on my second day, but didn’t go back for it until three weeks ago.
Right after the World Cup in Chamonix I headed to Ceüse to properly try the route. After five days I got really close to doing it, but couldn’t quite piece it together in the end. The World Cup in Briançon came as a welcomed break from hiking up the hill and after a week of competing and training I returned to Ceüse. First day back on the route felt really good and already on the second day of this trip I had the perfect send go!
Ratstaman is one of those mythical routes for me. Bolted by Chris Sharma a while ago at one of the best crags in the world, tried by a few strong people, but not been done for many years.
For sure one of the best routes I’ve ever done or tried in the 9b range.“

Alex Megos était dernièrement à Margalef où il a réalisé comme à son habitude ribambelle de 9a/9a+, grimpant principalement dans l’impressionnant dévers de Finestra où il avait établi la première ascension de “Perfecto Mundo” il y a quelques années. En plus de sa bête noire “Victimas Perez”, Alex a réussi une rare répétition de l’exigeant “Samfaina” 9a+ présenté ici en vidéo, agrémenté des commentaires du premier ascensionniste (Chris Sharma) qui avait libéré la voie en 2010 déjà !

Alex Megos was recently in Margalef, where he has already climbed plenty of 9a/9a+ routes. This time he focused on the impressive Finestra sector, where he claimed the first ascent of “Perfecto Mundo” a few years ago. After taking down one of his nemeses, “Victimas Perez”, Alex did a rare repeat of “Samfaina” 9a+, here in video, with special comments from Chris Sharma, the first climber to free it in 2010.

Quelques jours après Jakob Schubert, c’est au tour d’Alex Megos de réussir le court 9b du secteur éponyme de Siurana, “La capella”. Il complète ainsi la trilogie de voies évaluées autour du 9b du secteur avec “King Capella” et “Furia de Jabali”

Voici son commentaire suite à sa croix :
“Je l’ai trouvé dure pour être honnête. J’ai eu pas mal de problèmes au mouvement d’inversée en photo et je suis tombé là pendant quelques jours. Il semblerait qu’il y ait un peu de confusion concernant les cotations de secteur Capella de Siurana donc je vais écrire un post pour montrer comment c’est dur et une question de ressenti personnel quand il s’agit d’évaluer la difficulté des voies. Mais qu’importe la cotation, c’était un challenge fun et sympa.

Etant donné qu’Alex est le seul avec Will Bosi à avoir répété les 3 voies les plus dures des lieux, son avis sera intéressant. Voici en bonus la vidéo de son ascension de “Furia de Jabali”. Concernant “La capella”, c’est la 6ème ascension de la voie après Ondra, Ghisolfi, Woods, Bosi et Schubert.

Few days after Jakob Schubert, ALex Megos signed a repeat of short and powerful 9b “La capella” in Siurana. he completes the trilogy of the 3 hard routes around 9b of this sector, with “Furia de Jabali” and “King Capella”.
Here is his comment:

“This one felt very hard to me if I’m honest. I had a lot of trouble with this undercling move on the picture and fell there quite a few days. Looks like there is a bit of confusion about the grades here at the Capella sector and I’ll also write a post to show how hard and how individual grading and difficulties of routes can be. No matter the grade though, it was fun and a good challenge.”

Since Alex is the only one with Will Bosi to have rehearsed the 3 toughest routes around, his opinion will be interesting. Here is as a bonus the video of his ascent of “Furia de Jabali”. Regarding “La capella”, it is the 6th ascent of the route after Ondra, Ghisolfi, Woods, Bosi and Schubert.

De nouveau un peu d’escalade sportive en Espagne, avec trois extrêmes répétitions en Catalogne !

*** Jorge Diaz-Rullo réalise la 3ème ascension de “Samfaina” à Margalef, qui n’est autre que son projet secondaire de Finestra après “Cafe Colombia”. La voie est plutôt continue avec deux mouvements très durs sur bidoigts. Libérée par Chris Sharma en 2010 et immédiatement répétée par Ramon Julian, cette voie est restée ensuite sans nouvelle ascension pendant plus d’une décennie. Jorge propose 9a+ pour “Samfaina”, la jugeant plus dure que les autres 9a qu’il a réalisés dans ce mur.

*** “PapiChulo” de nouveau répété : quelques semaines après Mathieu Bouyoud, c’est cette fois-ci le grimpeur autrichien Stefan Scherz qui clippe le relais. Un peu plus de 2 mois après s’être cassé le pied et s’être donné comme défi de revenir plus fort pour réussir son premier 9a+, Stefan Scherz a tenu son pari à Oliana ! Âgé de seulement 20 ans et avec déjà quelques voies en 9ème degré à son actif, le compétiteur habitant Innsbruck semble en pleine progression. Jakob Schubert va commencer à regarder dans ses rétroviseurs !

*** Quelques jours après “King Capella”, Alex Megos réalise la seconde ascension de l’autre voie extrême du secteur Capella de Siurana libérée ce printemps par Will Bosi, “Furia de Jabali” 9b. Toujours sans se prononcer sur le niveau, Alex annonce 7 jours de travail et 3 gros steaks notamment dus à des conditions très froides avant sa réussite.

*** Jorge Diaz-Rullo just did “Samfaina” ‘s third ascent, his second project of Finestra sector, Margalef after his big one, “Cafe Colombia”. “Samfaina” is a power resistance testpiece with 2 hars moves on twofinger pockets. Freed by Sharma in 2010 and immediately repeated by Ramon Julian, the route was still unclimbed since more than a decade. Jorge proposes 9a+ for this one, that he finds harder than the other 9a’s he climbed on this impressive wall.

*** A new repeat of “papichulo” : few weeks after Mathieu Bouyoud, Austrian climber Stefan Scherz just clipped the anchor of Oliana’s kingline, “Papichulo”. 20 years old and few 9a’s under his belt, the competitor from Inssbruck seems to be in huge progression. Jakob Schubert will start to have a look in the mirror…

*** Few days after “King Capella”, Alex Megos is finishing the business in Capella sector of Siurana with “Furia de Jabali”, second ascent. Freed this spring by British climber Will Bosi, this short and sharp line took to Alex 7 days of projecting and 3 splits of his fingers due to very cold weather.

Le caillou espagnol est à l’honneur en ces temps gris et humides avec trois belles videos à la clé ! En octobre dernier, la grimpeuse espagnole Ana Belén Argudo signait la première féminine d’une voie historique de Cuenca, “El Cavario del Sicario” 8c. Equipée en 1992 par Julio Fernandez et libérée une année plus tard par ce dernier, puis immédiatement répétée par Dani Andrada et Stefan Glowacz, cette belle double casquette offre une escalade athlétique sur trous des plus fun !
C’est encore de l’escalade sur trous qu’on vous propose dans la seconde vidéo, avec Tom Bolger dans la première ascension de “Wild West” 9a/+ à Espadelles, Margalef, une voie qu’il avait libéré l’hiver dernier avec un pas de bloc brutal sur mono au départ avant une très résistante 2ème partie autour du 8c+.

Last October, the Spanish climber Ana Belén Argudo signed the first female of one of Cuenca’s historic route, “El Cavario del Sicario” 8c. Bolted in 1992 and freed one year later by Julio Fernandez, followed immediately by Dani Andrada and Stefan Glowacz, this beautiful double wave offers the most fun pocketclimbing! I
t’s pocketclimbing style again in the second video about “Wild West” 9a/+ first ascent by Tom Bolger (last winter). This line located at Espadelles, Margalef proposes a brutal mono bouldery entrance before a sustained 8c+.

On le savait, Alex Megos était à Siurana depuis le début du mois. Le mutant allemand vient de réaliser la seconde ascension de “King Capella”, le 9b+ ouvert par le grimpeur britannique Will Bosi le printemps dernier qui se compose de 15 mètres complètement explosifs ! Voici le commentaire d’Alex via les réseaux sociaux :

“C’était la voie pour laquelle je suis venu à Siurana, après l’avoir checkée en mars, just après que Will Bosi a fait la première. Déjà à l’époque je m’étais rendu compte que cela me convenait plutôt bien, alors avec Jenya Kazbekova nous avons décidé de passer quelques semaines en Espagne pour essayer des voies dures. Neuf jours dans la voie et deux steaks plus tard, j’ai pu réaliser la première répétition de cette voie très courte et à doigts. J’ai aussi utilisé une méthode légèrement différente de Will, en prenant une très large pince, une méthode que je juge plus facile que celle de Will. Il ne pouvait pas faire le mouvement comme je l’ai réalisé donc je pense que c’est une préférence personnelle. Très curieux d’entendre de voir ce que d’autres en pensent ! “

Sans se prononcer sur le niveau, Alex réalise une nouvelle voie dure en escalade sportive, lui qui a déjà un impressionnant CV avec le premier 9a à vue de l’histoire, justement à Siurana, les ouvertures de voies en 9b et plus comme “Bibliographie”, “Perfecto Mundo”, “Fight Club”, ou encore une répétition de 9b référence comme “FRFM”.

As we know, Alex Megos has been in Siurana since the beginning of the month. The German beast has just made the second ascent of “King Capella”, the 9b + opened by British climber Will Bosi last spring, which offers 15 meters of completely explosive climbing! Here is Alex’s comment via social media:

“That was the route I came to Siurana for, after checking it out once last March, right after Will Bosi made the FA. Already back then I realized that it suites me pretty well so together with Jenya Kazbkova we decided to spend a few weeks in Spain to have enough time for hard routes. After nine days on the route and two splits later I could get the first repeat of this very short and very crimpy test piece. I also used slightly different beta than Will taking a very wide pinch, which felt a little easier to me than what Will did. He couldn’t do the move the way I did it though, so I guess it’s personal preference. Very curious to hear what other people think!“

Without commenting on the grade, Alex just did a new hard route, he who already has an impressive CV with the first 9a onsight, precisely in Siurana, the first ascent of routes in 9b and more like “Bibliographie”,” Perfecto Mundo “,”Fight Club “, or even a repetition of famous the 9b from Chris Sharma, ” FRFM “.

Ces derniers jours deux voies extrêmes qui n’avaient connue jusqu’alors que peu d’ascensions ont été répétées et décotées.

Tout d’abord, après sa réussite dans “Salamandre” et récemment de “Mandallaz drive”, le haut-Savoyard Baptiste Dherbilly est allé défricher “Empreintes” à Double Cache, la dernière voie libérée par Fred Rouhling en Haute-Savoie (2008, annoncée 9a/b) qui n’avait encore jamais connu de répétition. Après une approche en 7c, le crux en toit comporte une section valant environ 8A+ bloc. Baptiste propose 8c+ pour cette dernière. Est-ce que Fred Rouhling va nous proposer une nouvelle métaphore du Roi Pêcheur afin de digérer au mieux cette nouvelle décote ?

Baptiste commente : “Après avoir usé de la brosse pour dépoussiérer cette ligne, je parviens à déchiffrer les mouvements. Certes le caillou n’est pas mirobolant mais la voie propose un effort très intéressant avec des mouvements aléatoires. On y trouve notamment un jeté au milieu avec un engagement certain ! Cette ligne m’a demandé beaucoup moins d’investissement que sa voisine Salamandre. Au-delà du détail de la cotation, qui selon moi est plus proche de 8c+, je tiens à remercier Fred pour “l’Empreinte” qu’il nous a laissée dans la réalisation de ces lignes atypiques.”

D’autre part, c’est sur le site de Charmey en Suisse qu’une autre voie extrême a été répétée dernièrement, cette fois par par le mutant allemand Alex Megos, avec la 3ème ascension de “Meiose”. Proposée à 9b par Pirmin Bertle, cette voie à doigts avait été décotée à petit 9a+ par Adam Ondra pour le compte de la seconde ascension, trouvant un repos avec un gros coincement de genou. Cette fois-ci Alex, qui a répété la voie sans se préoccuper des éliminantes, ne s’embarrasse pas :
“Je dois dire que la façon avec laquelle Pirmin a réalisé la voie est 9a+. Mais ce n’est pas le cheminement qui fait sens car il élimine des prises qui sont totalement dans la ligne. J’ai grimpé la voie avec ma vision et clippé la même ligne de dégaines, mais j’ai utilisé des méthodes bien différentes et aussi des prises différentes à certains endroits, dans une vision qui me semble logique de mon point de vue. Ma version doit valoir autour du 9a mais n’a rien à voir avec les méthodes originelles de Pirmin.”

Alex en a profité aussi pour flasher auparavant “Chromosome Y”, ramenant la cotation de la voie de 9a à 8c+. Adam Ondra avait aussi réalisé cette dernière flash en 2018.

In these recent days, two extreme routes have received repeats and downgrades.

First of all, after his success in “Salamandre” and recently in “Mandallaz drive”, Haut-Savoyard Baptiste Dherbilly went to try “Empreintes” at Double Cache, the last route freed by Fred Rouhling in Haute-Savoie (2008, around 9a/b) who had never received a second second ascent before. After an 7c approach, the roof crux offers approximately a 8A+ boulder section. Baptiste proposes 8c+ for this one. Will Fred Rouhling offer us a new metaphor of the Fisher King in order to digest this new downgrade?

Baptiste comments: “After having used the brush to clean the dusk in the line, I succeed to understand the moves. The rock is not the best but the effort is interesting with some random moves. You find a dyno in the middle with a long run out! This line took me less troubles than “Salamandre”. Beyond the detail of the grade, I would like to thank Fred for the print he is living with these original lines.”

Second news, from Charmey, Switzerland, where Alex Megos did the 3rd ascent of “Meiose”. This 9b proposition by Pirmin Bertle received a first downgrade by Adam Ondra due to the find of a knee bar rest. Alex gave his opinion on social media:

“I have to say, the way Pirmin Bertle climbed it, it is 9a+. That’s not the way it makes sense though as it eliminates some holds that are totally in reach and in the line too. I did climb route (in my eyes) and clipped the same line of quickdraws, but I used very different beta and also different holds for some parts. I just did it the way it seemed logical to me. The way I did it was around 9a, but it has nothing to do with the original beta Pirmin used.”

Il s’agit d'”Intermezzo XY gelöst” à Plombergstein en Autriche, une voie très courte et explosive à doigts, non sans rappeler les efforts très teigneux des voies de ses terres natales, le Frankenjura. La réalisation de cette performance aura permis de mettre en évidence un beau projet, “ZeroC02” dont l’italien Stefano Ghisolfi est aussi partie prenante : à chaque 9a réalisé, 5 arbres plantés.

Here is the vid of the 9a flashed by Alex Megos last week, “Intermezzo XY gelöst” located in Plombergstein, Austria. A very short and powerful climb, very fingery, close to the efforts you can find in the routes of Alex’s home, Frankenjura. This performance will have made it possible to highlight a beautiful project, “ZeroC02” in which the Italian Stefano Ghisolfi is also involved: for each 9a completed, 5 trees planted.

Connu pour sa réalisation du premier 9a à vue au monde avec “Estado Critico” à Siurana en 2013, perf rééditée en 2017 avec “TCT” et seulement égalée par Adam Ondra (3 fois avec “La Cabane au Canada”, “Il domani” et “TCT” aussi), Alex Megos prouve qu’il est toujours au sommet de son art quand il s’agit d’expédier une voie en un seul run ! Le top grimpeur allemand vient de réussir flash de “Intermezzo XY gelöst”, 9a, lors d’un court séjour à Plombergstein en Autriche (proche de Salzburg). C’est la 7ème ascension de cette voie libérée par Klem Loskot en 1997, une ligne très courte (12 m) et teigneuse à doigts avec un crux de départ autour du 8A+ bloc. Dans le même style, Alex avait déjà flashé “Underground” à Arco (8c+/9a) ou “The Path” (8b+ trad, Lake Louise, Canada). Known as the first person in history to onsight a 9a with “Estado Critico” in Siurana in 2013, a feat repeated in 2017 with “TCT” and only shared with Adam Ondra (who did it 3 times with “La Cabane au Canada”, “Il domani” and “TCT” as well) Alex Megos proves that he is still at the top of his art when it comes to the “one go” business! The top German climber just flashed “Intermezzo XY gelöst” 9a during a short stay in Plombergstein, Austria (near Salzburg). This is the 7th ascent of this route freed by Klem Loskot in 1997, a very short (12m) and fingery line with a starting crux around 8A+ boulder. In the same style, Alex had already flashed “Underground” in Arco (8c +/9a) or “The Path” (5.14 R, Lake Louise, Canada). Alex Megos n’a pas mis fin à sa parenthèse falaise de début de printemps avec son prolifique séjour à St-Léger. Le grimpeur allemand s’est rendu à Margalef il y a quelques semaines où il réalisé la seconde ascension de “Mejorando Imagen” dans le gros dévers central de La Finestra. La première ascension de cette voie très raide sur monos et bidoigts équipée par Iker Pou avait été réalisée par Ramon Julian en 2013 (en juillet !) après 3 jours de travail et proposée 9a. Située un peu plus à gauche que l’extrême “Perfecto Mundo”, “Mejorando Imagen” est une directe de départ du 9a classique de “Victima Perez” avec une difficulté assez concentrée sur 20 mètres de haut avant un mur final plus facile.
Après avoir été très proche lors de son 3ème jour de travail dans la voie, tombant dans le dernier mouvement dur de la voie, Alex a ensuite déchanté et est retombé dans le pas de bloc principal de la voie, un jeté sur un mono. C’est finalement le dernier jour sur place qu’Alex réussit la ligne à son 6ème essai de la journée, les doigts ensanglantés, en allant chercher les paires ! “Parfois, je ne comprends rien à l’escalade et au mental” conclut le grimpeur pro allemand. Pour cette dernière, Alex propose 9b et est curieux de voir ce que diront les prochains répétiteurs.

Alex Megos did not put an end to his early spring break with his prolific trip in St-Léger. The German climber went to Margalef a few weeks ago where he made the second ascent of “Mejorando Imagen” in the big central overhang of La Finestra. The first ascent of this very steep route on monos and two finger pockets, bolted by Iker Pou, was done by Ramon Julian in 2013 (in July!) after 3 days of work and proposed at 9a. Located a little more to the left of the famous “Perfecto Mundo”, “Mejorando Imagen” is a direct start of the classic 9a “Victima Perez” with a fairly concentrated difficulty over 20 meters high before an easier finish.
After coming close on his 3rd day, falling on the very last hard move of the route, Alex then failed on the main boulder crux, a jump to a mono. It was finally on his last day in Spain that Alex sent the line. On his 6th try of the day, with bloody fingers, the sending go was meant for cleaning the draws! “Sometimes I don’t understand anything about climbing and the mind” concluded the pro German climber. For the grade, Alex suggests an upgrade to 9b and is curious to see what the next repeaters will make of it.
