Toru Nakajima a répété cette semaine le panneau à arquées de Dai Koyamada “Epitaph” (initialement 8C, ouvert en 2009) à Hourai et propose une réévaluation du passage à 8C+. En effet, peu de temps après la seconde ascension du bloc par Ryuichi Murai en 2017 (vidéo ci-dessous), la prise clé avait cassé et le bloc déclaré quasi impossible. En mars dernier, Toru s’y colle et surprise, trouve le crux pas si infaisable que cela grâce à un gros talon gauche. Après 9 séances, il parvient à réaliser le crux du bloc dans l’enchainement mais se blesse légèrement au genou suite à l’essai, ayant réalisé un gros crochet de talon pour le réaliser. Après un peu de repos et avoir laissé passé une fenêtre de mauvais temps, Toru réalise enfin le bloc à la 13ème séance, après 4 séances supplémentaires. C’est donc la 3ème ascension du bloc et la 7ème proposition de ce niveau au Japon, qui devient un des endroits de la planète les plus fournis en matière de haute-difficulté en bloc naturel, en plus d’avoir de très nombreux et talentueux spécialistes. Toru Nakajima just repeated this week Dai Koyamada’s crimp testpiece “Epitaph” (originally graded 8C, opened in 2009) in Hourai with an 8C+ upgrade. Few times later Ryuichi Murai’s second ascent in 2017, the key hold broke and the boulder was known impossible. Last week Toru checked it and surprise, found another beta for the crux with an insane heelhook. After 9 sessions, he could stick this move from the beginning but fell just after. He needed 4 more sessions after a knee injury due to the hook and a bad weather window before completing it, at his 13th session. It’s the third ascent of the boulder and the 7th 8C+ boulder of Japan, a country with numerous hard bouldering problems in addition to tons of strong and talented climbers. To be continued…

Plutôt habituée du harnais et de la corde, l’américaine Michaela Kiersch a réalisé pas mal de belles réalisations en bloc depuis ce début d’année, avec entre autres en mars son premier 8B+ bloc avec “Hailstorm” à Ogden, ou encore le debout de “Meadowlark Lemon” (8A+/B) à Red Rocks. En voyage en Suisse actuellement, Michaela vient de réaliser une super semaine à Magic Wood avec pas moins de 2 8B blocs classiques (“Steppenwolf” et “Riverbed”) et le célèbre 8B+ des lieux, “New Base Line”. Ce dernier aura succombé en seulement 4 petites séances, une pour faire les mouvements et 3 autres pour l’enchainement !
À noter que Michaela partage son voyage avec Nina Williams et Alex Puccio, cette dernière cochant récemment aussi “Steppenwolf” (8B). Le trio infernal n’a peut-être pas fini de frapper ici ! Ci-joint la balade de Michaela dans “Riverbed” (vidéo non-coupée).

Rather accustomed to harness and rope, the American Michaela Kiersch has achieved quite a few bouldering feats since the start of the year with, among others, her first 8B+ in March with “Hailstorm” in Ogden, or the stand start of “Meadowlark Lemon” (8A+/B) in Red Rocks. Currently travelling in Switzerland, Michaela has just had a great week in Magic Wood by sending no less than 2 classic 8B boulders (“Steppenwolf” and “Riverbed”) and the most famous 8B+ of the area, “New Base Line”. This one got done fast in just 4 short sessions, one to learn the moves and the others to link!

*** Nacho Sanchez libère son super projet en 8C+ à Fortuna (Murcia) en Espagne :
Il était dessus depuis quelques années, Nacho Sanchez libère “Daños con-laterales” et propose 8C+, un bloc où la principale difficulté consiste à réaliser et empiler les 3 premiers mouvements, qui lui ont demandé beaucoup d’investissement. A coup sûr un des blocs les plus durs d’Espagne est né, avec “La Teoria del todo” à Albarracin, désormais décoté. On rappelle que Nacho avait déjà ouvert “Crisis” 8C/+ à Crevillente. *** Dave Graham annonce un nouveau 8C+ en Suisse ce printemps :
Le vétéran du bloc US (40 ans) annonce cette semaine la première ascension de “Euclase” en avril à Val Bavona en Suisse. Un passage complexe en 8C+ (19 mouvements de main, 21 de pied et 4 coincements de genoux) qu’il avait repéré en 2005 et qui lui a demandé un investissement colossal : 10 séances pour réaliser tous les mouvements, 10 autres pour imprimer les transitions entre les mouvements de main et 10 autres pour être proche de la réussite. Un aboutissement pour Dave, qui signe ici son second 8C+ après la recotation de “Hypnotized minds”.

*** Brooke Raboutou ouvre la saison à RMNP (Colorado):
La grimpeuse franco-américaine n’a eu besoin que d’une session du soir pour se défaire du classique de Lincoln Lake, le toit à compression et talons de “Evil Backwards” 8B. Voici la vidéo de la réalisation.

*** “Tigris Sit” 8B+ in Magic Wood repeated twice by women:
ALex Pucio and Michaela Kiersch recently added another hard boulder to her ticklist with the long roof problem named “Tigris sit”, Magic Wood, Switerland. Waiting a full video about their stay. It’s Alex’s 7th 8B+ and Michaela’s 3rd.

*** Nacho Sanchez frees one of Spain’s hardest boulder:
He was trying this problem since years, Nacho Sanchez just freed “Danos con-laterales” and gave 8C+ to his first ascent. The main difficulty is to link the first 3 moves. One of the hardest boulder in Spain with “La teoria del todo” in ALbarracin, now downgraded. Remeber Nacho opened some years ago “Crisis” 8C/+ in Crevillente. You can watch the video above.

*** Dave Graham announces a new 8C+ in Switerland this Spring:
US bouldering veteran (40 years old) claimed this week having done the first ascent of “Euclase” 8C+ in APril. This boulder looks technical with 19 moves, 21 feet moves and 4 kneebars… He checked it in 2005 and spent 10 sessions to do all the moves, and 10 more to find the good betas… After 10 more sessions, he was close to the send. A new achievement for Dave, and his second 8C+ after “Hypnotized minds”.

*** Brooke Raboutou opens summer season in RMNP (Colorado):
Brooke just needed one evening session to send Lincoln Lake’s classic “Evil Backwards” a compression roof problem (8B). The video of her climb on her Instagram.

Le japonais avait résolu ce printemps ce projet de longue date de Chigobutai qui présente une escalade assez courte et explosive pour un bloc de cette difficulté, à l’instar du très pur “Floatin” ouvert par Ruichi Murai plus tôt dans la saison hivernale.

*** Nomura Shinichiro presents Gakido V16 (first ascent) in a video:
Japanese solved this Spring this long time project located in Chigobutai, Fukushima. An intense and powerful climbing for a boulder of this grade, as “Floatin” opened by Ruichi Murai at the beginning of winter season.

*** Matt Fultz ouvre “Brace for the Cure” V16 au Colorado sur le bloc de “Jade” :
Le bloqueur américain annonce vidéo à la clé sur son compte Instagram la première ascension de ce 8C+ : un nouvel enchainement en gros dévers qu’il décrit comme sa première ascension la plus dure et son 2e problème le plus dur qu’il a réalisé. Il commence dans “Jade” pour traverser à gauche et remonter l’impressionnant panneau juste à côté du 8B+ classique. Un passage qui demande une précision au millimètre pour attraper des prises minuscules impossibles à ré-armer.

*** Matt Fultz opens “Brace for the Cure” V16 at “Jade” boulder, Colorado:
American boulderer announces on his Instagram account with a video the first ascent of this V16: his hardest first ascent and his second hardest problem ever done. It starts in “Jade” then traversing left and going straight the big overhang juste close from the 8B+ classic. A problem which requires a lot of precision in order to stick the hands correctly on the rasor crimps.

La grimpeuse Britannique Shauna Coxsey (31 ans) est revenue à son meilleur niveau ! Retraitée des compétitions d’escalade depuis quelques années et devenue maman, Shauna vient de réaliser son 2ème 8B+ bloc en quelques semaines après la réussite de “Fotofobia” à la Pedriza (et son 3ème en comptant “New Base Line” il y a 10 ans). Cette fois-ci, c’est au pays que Shauna a perfé avec “The Boss” à Yarncliffe dans le Peak District. C’est la première ascension féminine du bloc et la plus grosse perf féminine en bloc jamais réalisée par une sur le sol britannique. Le bloc est un toit en compression avec une arête main gauche et des rails plats main droite tout en gainage, spatules et talons. Le problème a été ouvert en 2020 par son compagnon Ned Feehally, un des ténors du bloc britannique.

“Ahhh cette fois-ci, c’était vraiment magique. Ned a fait la première ascension de cette ligne incroyable il y a quelques années et depuis, elle occupait une place dans mon esprit. Bien qu’elle ne soit qu’à une courte distance de notre maison, il m’a fallu des années pour l’essayer. Je me suis sentie assez forte et surtout assez confiante.

Les mouvements sont si puissants et impitoyables. C’est un peu effrayant avec une claque à l’aveugle et quelques plat dos en arrière. De plus, il y a la peur lancinante de tomber de l’arête…

J’ai assemblé ce problème beaucoup plus rapidement que je ne l’avais prévu. C’est complètement fou que je puisse réaliser une ligne comme celle-ci, et encore plus vite. Il n’y avait aucune échappatoire à sa puissante intensité et aucune place pour la peur ou le doute sur la grande claque au max de mon allonge pour moi.

C’est un peu fou de ne plus avoir l’impression de courir après des records antérieurs ou une forme que j’ai déjà eue. Et de sentir que mon corps et mon esprit sont prêts à explorer ce qui est possible.”

British climber Shauna Coxsey (31) is back to her best! Retired from climbing competitions for a few years and now a mother, Shauna just completed her 2nd 8B+ boulder in just a few weeks after the success of “Fotofobia” at Pedriza (and her 3rd 8B+ counting “New Base Line” 10 years ago). This time, it was back home that Shauna broke through with “The Boss” at Yarncliffe in the Peak District. It’s the first female ascent of the boulder and the biggest female bouldering performance ever achieved on British soil. The boulder is a compression roof with a left-hand arete and right-hand flat rails all in compressions, toe hooks and heels. The problem was opened in 2020 by her partner Ned Feehally, one of the tenors of British bouldering.

“Ahhh this one felt pretty magical. Ned made the first ascent of this incredible line a few years back and ever since it’s held a space in my mind. Though only a short drive from our house it took me years to try it. To feel strong enough and more importantly confident enough.

The moves are so feisty and unforgiving. It’s a little spooky with a blind slap and some back splat landings to be had. Plus there’s the niggling fear you could fall off the ledge

I pieced this together much quicker than I expected. It feels totally crazy that I can do a climb like this let alone do it fast. There was no escaping its powerful intensity and no room for fear or doubt on the max span slap for me.

It’s kinda wild to no longer feel I’m chasing previous PBs or a form I once had. And to feel my body and mind are ready for exploring what’s possible.“

Deux ans après avoir réalisé le départ debout, Janja Garnbret est de retour sur “Bügeleisen” à Maltatal en Autriche. L’étoile de la grimpe slovène attendait le moment opportun pour prendre sa revanche sur le assis, et c’était ce dimanche ! Janja n’a fait qu’une bouchée du classique des lieux, un gros panneau déversant sur arquées ouvert il y a 10 ans par Nalle Hukkataival. Après un rapide check des mouvements, la croix est faite en quelques minutes ! Un bloc qu’elle empochera deux fois de suite ! Janja commente via son compte Instagram, avec une vidéo à la clé (en bas d’article).

“Je suis revenue beaucoup plus forte qu’il y a 2 ans et les mouvements me semblaient beaucoup plus faciles qu’avant. Il m’a fallu moins d’une demi-heure pour réussir les mouvements et le bloc. Je suis fière d’être la première femme à l’avoir fait ! Petite anecdote : je n’étais pas satisfaite de la vidéo de mon ascension, alors j’ai recommencé et j’ai grimpé le bloc de nouveau !”

Par cette nouvelle perf Janja prouve une fois encore son talent unique et rejoint le club très fermé des grimpeuses ayant réalisé du 8C bloc : la japonaise Tomoko Ogawa, l’allemande Kaddi Lehmann et les américaines Katie Lamb, Brooke Raboutou, et Ashima Shiraishi.

Two years after completing the stand start, Janja Garnbret is back on “Bügeleisen” in Maltatal, Austria. The Slovenian climbing star was waiting for the right moment to take her revenge on the sit start of the problem, and it was this Sunday! Janja made a quick work of the local classic, a big overhang panel with crimps opened 10 years ago by Nalle Hukkataival! After a quick move check, the send was done in few minutes! A boulder she’ll pocket twice in a row! Janja comments via her Instagram account, with a video to share (watch it below).

“Came back way stronger and moves felt a lot easier than they used to. Took me less than half an hour to get the moves dialed in and send the boulder Proud to be the first woman to get this one done!

Funny sidenote: wasn’t happy with the video Roman took of my ascent, so I actually went for another go and climbed the whole thing again 😉“

With this new feat, Janja once again proves her unique talent and joins the very select club of climbers who have climbed 8C boulder: the Japanese Tomoko Ogawa, the German Kaddi Lehmann and Americans Katie Lamb, Brooke Raboutou, and Ashima Shiraishi.
