Cap sur El Cap, l’expédition se poursuit. Accompagnée du talentueux grimpeur belge Seb Berthe qui a renoncé au Dawn Wall pour cette saison après un long siège ce printemps, la grimpeuse française Soline Kentzel vient de réaliser une bel exploit sur El Cap (Yosemite) avec une répétition en libre de “Golden Gate” (1000 m, 7c+/8a, 36 longueurs) après 9 jours en paroi !
Concernant l’ascension, Soline précise : “Nous avons grimpé en réversible tout le long (dans les longueurs plus faciles en 5.11) et enchainé les longueurs crux en tête tous les deux (au dessus du 5.12).”
Seb Berthe décrit : “On a mis deux jours à arriver à la longueur en désescalade, la longueur 17. Soline est tombée dans quelques longueurs en 5.11 mais les a réalisées ensuite à l’essai suivant. Le 3ème jour fut un jour de repos sous la neige. Le 4ème jour, nous étions à la “Move pitch”. Le 5ème jour, elle a essayé la voie mais ne l’a pas enchainé. Le 6ème jour, nous avons effectué un jour de repos sous la pluie. Au 7ème jour, Soline a enchainé “Move pitch” à son 3ème essai, et on a bougé rapidement à the Tower. Elle a pu enchainer “Golden desert” durant la soirée à son premier essai. Le 8ème jour fut un nouveau repos forcé en raison de la pluie. Le 9ème jour fut consacré à la “A5 traverse” que Soline a pu réaliser en deux essais, dans un combat avec les bouteilles, et nous avons terminé au sommet pendant l’après-midi”.
Pendant ces jours de repos forcés, nous avons dû nous serrer sur la toute petite vire où nous squattions en essayant constamment d’éviter d’être mouillés d’abord puis gelés ensuite… Un de nos sacs de couchage est même devenu totalement gelé et figé. Mais nous avons pu garder la motivation élevée et reprendre l’escalade dès que le mur était sec ! Pendant les journées d’escalade les plus ensoleillées, la glace fondait du haut du mur et d’impressionnants morceaux de glace tombaient. Toutes les 5min, le tirage au sort était lancé : il fallait arrêter de grimper, se coller contre le mur en attendant que ces morceaux de glace tombent tout autour de nous.” Ambiance !

Soline devient la 6ème grimpeuse à réaliser Golden Gate en libre — après Hazel Findlay, Florence Pinet, Emily Harrington (dans la journée !), la canadienne Bronwyn Hodgins et Amity Warme — et une des plus jeunes, à seulement 21 ans !

Cap sur El Cap expedition continues. Joined by talented Belgian climber Seb Berthe who gave up in his attempt to free climb the Dawn Wall, French woman Soline Kentzel (21 years old) could do a real feat on El Cap with a free ascent of classic “Golden Gate” (5.13a/b, 1000m) after 9 days spent on the wall!
According to Soline, “We swapped the lead on easier pitches (5.11) and we both lead all the difficult pitches (up to 5.12).”
Seb Berthe describes:
“We took two days to reach the downclimb, pitch 17. She had a few falls on some 5.11 pitches of the first half but always sent them on her second try. Day 3 was a snowy restday. On day 4, we were at the “move pitch”. Day 5, she worked the pitch but could not send. Day 6, rainy restday. On day 7, she sent the Move pitch in her third try and we quickly moved to Tower to the people. She could even send the Golden desert pitch on her first try that evening. Day 8 was a forced rainy restday. On day 9, she worked the A5 traverse and then sent it 2tries after in a pumpy battle, we ran to the summit the same afternoon!

We went through some epic snow storm and rain showers wich made surviving on this wall a true challenge. During these forced restdays we had to squeeze in the really small ledge we brought constantly trying to avoid being wet first and frozen after… One of our sleeping bag even became totally stiff and icy. But we could keep the motivation really high and got back to climbing as soon as the wall was dry! During the sunnier climbing days, the ice was melting from the top of the wall throwing on us impressive ice chunks. Every 5min, lottery was on: we had to stop climbing, stick ourselves against the wall waiting for these pieces of ice to fall all around us.”

Soline becomes the 6th woman to free climb “Golden Gate” (after Hazel Findlay, Florence Pinet, Emily Harrington (in a day!), Canadian Bronwyn Hodgins and Amity Warme) and one of the youngest at 21 years old!

Cap sur El Cap : levons l’ancre pour une escalade plus respectueuse !

6 grimpeurs passionnés rejoints par deux amoureux de la mer, avides de grandes parois et d’aventures, se réunissent pendant presque 10 mois autour d’une quête unique!

L’objectif : traverser océan et continent pour grimper la paroi de leur rêve en réduisant au maximum leur impact environnemental !

“Ce projet est une expédition sportive, un voyage de voile-escalade, à partir de laquelle nous allons réaliser un long-métrage. Nous sommes 8 amis, grimpeurs de haut-niveau, aventuriers passionnés et photographes, et nous avons l’ambition cet automne de traverser l’Atlantique en voilier (au départ de la méditerranée) vers les USA pour y grimper les plus belles voies, les plus belles parois. L’objectif principal étant le fameux El Capitan dans le parc du Yosemite en Californie. L’objectif de ce voyage est de montrer qu’il est possible d’effectuer une expédition sportive d’une telle ampleur avec de faibles impact sur l’environnement avec alternatives au transport aérien.“

Niveau escalade voici les ambitions nourries par le groupe composé entre autres de la photographe Julia Cassou et du grimpeur belge Seb Berthe :

• La découverte de l’escalade sur coinceurs, dite escalade traditionnelle, en grande paroi. Et avec elle toutes les aventures que cela implique: les premières chutes sur coinceurs, dormir, manger et faire ses besoins en paroi, hisser des sacs particulièrement lourds,… Peurs, joies et émotions fortes seront au rendez-vous! 
• L’escalade en libre d’El Capitan, performance de haut-niveau à laquelle seule une très petite minorité des grimpeurs de cette planète puisse aspirer.
• El Capitan à la journée… 1000m de grimpe en une seule journée? Efficacité, vitesse, engagement sont les ingrédients nécessaires à la réussite d’un tel objectif!
• Répétition en libre du Dawnwall, la grande voie la plus exigeante, difficile et effrayante du monde. Une répétition de cette voie représenterait sans nul doute l’une des plus belles performances en grande-paroi de ces 10 dernières années.

“Cap sur El Cap”: let’s go for a more responsible climbing!
6 passionate Euro climbers joined by two lovers of the sea, big walls and adventure addicts, come together for almost 10 months around a unique idea!

“This project is a sport expedition, a sailing-climbing trip, from which we will make a movie. We are 8 friends, top climbers, passionate adventurers and photographers, and we have the ambition this Fall to sail across the Atlantic ocean (from the Mediterranean) to the USA in order to climb the most beautiful routes, the most beautiful walls. The main objective being the famous El Capitan in the Yosemite Park. The objective of this trip is to show that it is possible to carry out a sport expedition of such magnitude with low environmental impact using alternatives to air transport.”

For the climbing side, here are the goals fixed by the group composed among others of photographer Julia Cassou and top Belgian climber Seb Berthe:

• The discovery of climbing on stoppers, known as traditional climbing, on big walls. And with it all the adventures that follow: the first falls on cams, sleep, eat and do your needs on the wall, haul particularly heavy bags… Fears, joy and strong emotions will be waiting for us!
• Free climb El Capitan, a high-level performance that only a very small minority of climbers on this planet can aspire to.
• El Capitan in a day… 1000m of climbing in one day? Efficiency, speed, commitment are the necessary ingredients for the success of such a goal!
• Free ascent of the Dawn wall, the most demanding, difficult and scary multi-pitch route in the world. A repeat of this route would undoubtedly represent one of the best big wall performances of the last 10 years.

On vous avait déjà parlé de ses belles perfs en trad, l’américaine Brittany Goris vient de frapper un grand coup le week-end dernier avec une rare répétition féminine en libre de “Salathé wall” (900m, 8a) sur El Capitan au Yosemite. Une ascension qui lui aura pris 5 jours en paroi. La première en libre de “Salathé” avait été réalisée par Alex Huber en 1995 et du côté des filles seules Steph Davis, Mayan Smith-Gobat et Hazel Findlay avaient réussi le challenge. Voici la première réaction de Brittany sur son compte Instagram :

“Ce fut une course folle du début à la fin, de la première fois où je l’ai travaillée en tête il y a un mois, jusqu’au hissage du dernier sac de transport la nuit dernière alors que le soleil se couchait sur la vallée de Yosemite. J’aurai beaucoup, beaucoup plus à dire à ce sujet dans les jours à venir, mais pour le moment, je suis simplement pleine de reconnaissance pour avoir eu le privilège de gravir un itinéraire aussi historique et magnifique, et bénéficier du soutien de tous ceux qui ont contribué à faire ce rêve une réalité : @hwteuber @garetbleir @shanjean @maxbuschini (le photographe derrière ces images) et tous ceux qui ont cru en moi et m’ont aidé à croire en moi en cours de route.”

We had already upraised you of her amazing sends in tradclimbing, American climber Brittany Goris just completed a big dream last weekend with a rare female free ascent of “Salathé wall” (900m, 8a) on El Capitan, Yosemite. The push took her 5 days on the wall. The first free ascent of “Salathé” was done by Alex Huber in 1995 and for the girls Steph Davis, Mayan Smith-Gobat and Hazel Findlay successfully completed the challenge before Brittany. Here is Brittany’s first reaction on her Instagram account:

“It was a wild ride from start to finish, from my first time rapping in to work the headwall a month ago, to the final haul bag laden trudge down last night as the sun set over Yosemite Valley. I have much, much more to say about it in the days to come, but for now I am simply filled with gratitude to have had the privilige to climb such a historic and beautiful route, and for the support of everyone who helped make this dream a reality and everyone who who believed in me and helped me believe in myself along the way.”
