“Proof of Concept” est un film consacré au grimpeur pro américain Sean Bailey. Ecarté de la participation aux Jeux Olympiques, Sean a rebondi dehors et en coupe du Monde ces deux dernières années. Et les croix se sont accumulées tès rapidement ! Découvrez-le en action dans “Ace of Spade” (9a+) dans l’Utah qu’il était très proche de flasher avec un flow impressionnant, ou encore ne faisant qu’une bouchée de certains blocs extrêmes des US “Box Therapy”, “Gran Illusion” (8C+) ou encore “Pegasus” à Joe’s Valley (8C). Sean monte encore en puissance le printemps dernier avec quelques victoires en coupe du Monde, une en bloc à Salt Lake, puis deux autres en diff’ à Villars et Chamonix en début d’été avant d’aller conquérir “Bibliographie” (9b+) à Céüse. A peine un mois après le mutant italien Stefano Ghisolfi, c’est au tour de Sean Bailey de clipper ce samedi le relais de “Bibliographie”, la voie la plus dure de France, et une des voies les plus dures au Monde. Situé dans la spot estival à la mode, Céüse, “Bibliographie” a reçu de nombreuses visites cet été. Stefano Ghisolfi, qui a réussit la seconde ascension, Seb Bouin, Dave Graham,… Ouverte par Ethan Pringle en 2009, “Bibliographie” propose 35 mètres d’escalade déversante, avec un crux autour du 8A+ bloc après une approche en 8b+, et un 9a en guise de conti derrière… Annoncée à 9c par Alex Megos en août 2020, “Bibliographie” a été revue à la baisse par Ghisolfi. Il sera intéressant de savoir a posteriori ce qu’en pense Sean ! Connu pour ses performances en bloc de haut niveau comme “Box Therapy” ou “The Grand illusion” (8C+), le mutant américain n’avait jusqu’alors réussi aucune voie au-dessus du 9a+, avec “Biographie” ou encore “Joe mama” en guise de carte de visite. Une belle réalisation de plus à son actif ! Il commente via Instagram :
“De loin la bataille la plus difficile que j’aie menée avec moi-même. Je n’ai jamais été aussi obsédé par une voie. Je me suis réveillé en pensant à elle. Je me suis endormi en pensant à elle. C’était sans arrêt. J’ai eu la chance de passer le crux du milieu assez rapidement, mais j’ai commencé à tomber pété 12 fois ou quelque chose comme ça à la fin. Chaque fois j’étais tellement épuisé, j’avais besoin d’un jour de repos, donc j’essayais de faire un essai tous les deux jours. J’avais l’impression de me reposer plus que de grimper. J’ai passé beaucoup de temps à me demander pourquoi je me soumettais à ça. Je savais que je pouvais m’entraîner pour cela, revenir une autre année avec la caisse et un esprit plus frais, et probablement être plus à l’aise. En fin de compte, j’ai réalisé que je devais continuer sur ma lancée tant que j’avais envie d’enchainer, et je suis content de l’avoir fait ! Cela m’a beaucoup appris sur le processus. J’ai passé beaucoup de temps à essayer de faire en sorte que les choses tournent en ma faveur, mais parfois il faut aussi laisser les choses arriver d’elles-mêmes.”
Barely a month after the Italian beast Stefano Ghisolfi, it’s Sean Bailey’s turn to clip the anchor this Satursday of “Bibliographie” , the hardest sportclimbing route in France and one of the hardest in the World. Located in the famous summer place, Céüse, “Bibliographie” received many visits this summer. Stefano Ghisolfi, who made the second ascent, Seb Bouin, Dave Graham, … Opened by Ethan Pringle in 2009, “Bibliographie” offers 35 meters of overhanging climbing, with a crux around 8A+ boulder after an 8b+ approach, and a 9a as a finish behind … Given 9c by Alex Megos in August 2020, “Bibliography” has been downgraded to 9b+ by Ghisolfi. It will be interesting to know what Sean thinks about it! Known for his high-level bouldering performances like “Box Therapy” or “The Grand illusion” (8C+), the American mutant had so far not succeeded in any route above 9a+, with “Biographie” or “Joe mama “as highlight. Another great achievement to his credit!
“Easily the hardest battle I’ve waged with myself. I’ve never been so obsessed. I woke up thinking about the route. I fell asleep thinking about the route. It was nonstop. I was lucky to get through the middle crux pretty quick but proceeded to pump off the final boulder 12 or something times. Every time I was so blown I needed a rest day, so essentially I was getting one try every two days. It felt like I was resting more than climbing. I spent a lot of time questioning why I was putting myself through it. I knew I could train for it, come back another year with the right fitness and a fresher mind and probably have an easier time at it. In the end I realized I needed to see this process through just as much as I needed to send, I’m glad I did! It taught me so much about the process. I spend a lot of time trying to make things happen, but sometimes you have to let things happen too.”
On s’en doutait un peu après un court été seulement à bosser la voie avant de clipper le relais, l’italien Stefano Ghisolfi a pris quelques heures de réflexion et rend son verdict concernant le niveau de “Bibliographie”. Il décote et suggère 9b+. Voici ses mots :
“Hier et la jour avant j’ai voulu me focaliser sur ma journée, l’escalade et les gens autour de l’histoire de “Bibliographie”. J’ai volontairement évité de parler cotation, mais il semblait inévitable d’aborder le sujet. J’ai passé une journée à trouver les mots justes. Quand j’ai commencé à bosser “Bibliographie”, je ne pouvais imaginer y arriver en une saison. Je regardais les videos d’Alex Megos dans la voie et la voie me semblait impossible, et je me disais que si cela lui avait pris 60 jours, je pensais revenir ici pendant des années… A la fin, j’ai réussi à me sentir bien dans la voie dès le début du processus, j’ai trouvé une nouvelle méthode dans le crux (en changeant de main comparé à Alex) et j’ai trouvé aussi une nouvelle méthode dans le second crux. Je l’ai grimpé en 25 jours de grimpe répartis sur 3 mois, et j’ai comparé l’effort à “Change” ou “Perfecto Mundo” en changeant d’avis tous les 2 jours. “Change” m’a pris autant de temps et “Perfecto Mundo” encore un peu plus, mais je pense que ces 3 routes pourraient valoir le même niveau. Je sais que je peux grimper un 9c, mais une voie de ce niveau doit être significativement plus dure que les 9b+ existant, et pour moi “Bibliographie” ne l’est pas. Cela ne veut pas dire que je veux discréditer la performance de quiconque en particulier celle d’Alex, cela reste un incroyable exploit, notamment la première ascension qui requiert d’avantage de facultés mentales et physiques) but je voudrai rester honnête sur ce que j’ai ressenti pendant le processus complet dans “Bibliographie”. et ce n’est juste que mon opinion, j’espère que nous en écouteront d’autres bientôt. J’aurai aimé être la 3ème personne à gravir du 9c mais au fond de mon coeur, je sais que je ne le suis pas encore.”
We suspected a little after a short summer only to work the route before clipping the anchor, the Italian Stefano Ghisolfi took a few hours of reflection and delivered his verdict concerning the grade of “Bibliographie”. He downgrades and suggests 9b+. Here are his words:
“Yesterday and the day before I wanted to focus more on my journey, the climb and the people around the story of Bibliographie, I avoided on purpose talking about grades, but seems inevitable to do so. I took a day to think about it to find the right words. When I started trying Bibliographie I couldn’t imagine I could climb it in one season, watching Alexander Megos video the route seemed impossible and if it took him 60 days, I start projecting it thinking to come back over the years. In the end, I felt good on it from the beginning, found new beta for the crux (switching left and right hand compare to Alex), and new beta for the second crux. I climbed it in a total of 25 climbing days during this 3 months, and I tried to compared it to “Change” and “Perfecto Mundo”, changing my mind every other day. “Change” took me around the same time and Perfecto Mundo a bit more, but I feel all the 3 routes could fit all in the same grade range. I know I can climb a 9c, but for a route to be that grade it needs to be much harder than the existing 9b+s, and Bibliographie for me isn’t. This doesn’t mean I want to belittle the performance of anyone, neither Alex’s or mine, it is still an incredible achievement (especially the first ascent that includes many more hard mental and physical aspects) but I just wanted to be honest about what I felt during the whole process on Bibliographie, and this is just my opinion, hopefully we will listen other soon. I would have been happy to be the third person to have climbed 9c, but I’m my heart I know I’m not (yet)”
Après plusieurs mois de travail et pour son dernier jour sur place (!), voici une bien jolie croix de plus au compteur de Stefano Ghisolfi qui s’offre pour cet fin d’été la belle ligne de “Bibliographie” (9c) sur la mythique falaise de Ceüse, équipée par Ethan Pringle en 2009, et libérée l’année dernière par Alex Megos (lui aussi lors de son dernier jour de trip…) !
“Bibliographie” est, pour rappel, la seconde proposition en 9c au monde, après “Silence” à Flatanger (Norvège).
Si Stefano Ghisolfi confirme la cotation, il s’agira du premier 9c à être répété…. Le grimpeur italien avait déjà à son palmarès de voies extrêmes deux 9b+, “Perfecto mundo” à Margalef (Catalogne) et “Change” à Flatanger (Norvège) . Stefano franchit donc ici un nouveau pallier. Affaire à suivre !

On his last day in the magical cliff in Ceüse, Stefano Ghisolfi just sent “Bibliographie” (9c), a king line bolted by Ethan Pringle in 2009, and freed by Alex Megos last year (on his last day in Ceüse too) !
As a reminder, “Bibliographie” is the second 9c route suggestion in the world, after “Silence” in Flatanger (Norway).
If Stefano confirms the grade, it would be the first 9c ever repeated… The italian machine has ever completed 2 9b+ before, “Change” in Flatanger cave and “Perfecto Mundo” in Margalef (Catalunya). This ascent is a new rockclimbing highlight for him. More informations soon !

Il passe aux cribles toutes les sections et les premières astuces qu’il a pu trouver dans cette voie extrême de Céüse libérée en août dernier par Alex Megos.
