On avait laissé le crack Autrichien à Siurana après sa réalisation du triptyque du secteur “La Capella”. C’est à Eremo di San Paolo, Arco en Italie que Jakob Schubert refait surface ce début d’année avec une nouvelle réalisation éclair, celle de “Erebor” 9b. C’est déjà la 4ème ascension de la voie après Ghisolfi, Rogora et Ondra. Il est arrivé une petite mésaventure à Jakob, qui, a cassé une prise de pied en crochetage talon juste sous la chaine, ce qui lui a valu un beau vol plané. Il a empoché la voie à l’essai suivant en trouvant une méthode alternative plus dure à cet endroit, mais ne changeant pas le niveau.
Au vu de la facilité avec laquelle il répète les voies en 9a+ et 9b ici et là (9 réalisations en 9b et +) on serait curieux de le voir sortir des standards et de sa zone de confort en falaise, en essayant des voies plus dures, moins répétées ou proposer lui aussi des premières ascensions vraiment extrêmes. Qui vivre verra !

We left the Austrian machine in Siurana after his send of the triptych of the sector “La Capella”. He is back again this weekend in Eremo di San Paolo, Arco, Italy with a new quick send of “Erebor” 9b. It is already the 4th ascent of the route after Ghisolfi, Rogora and Ondra. A little mishap happened to Jakob, who broke a foothold while pressing hard on a right heelhook just below the anchor and as a result took a good whipper. He immediately found a new, harder, beta which in his eyes doesn’t change the grade, and climbed the route at his next go.
In view of Jakob’s margin when it comes to routes in the 9a+ and 9b range (9 sends of 9b and +) we would be curious to see him venture away from the established standards of rock climbing and out of his comfort zone, with harder routes that are also less repeated, or by claiming extreme first ascents. We will see in the future!

Adam Ondra a décidé de passer un peu de temps à Arco, la ville où il s’est marié début septembre. Et à peine arrivé pour cette sorte de lune de miel, le voilà qui répète Erebor, la ligne équipée et enchainée par son ami Stefano Ghisolfi en janvier de cette année.

La voie, cotée 9b/+, a depuis été répétée par Laura Rogora le mois dernier, faisant d’elle la première femme à ce niveau. Malheureusement pour les deux Italiens, Adam Ondra se prononce pour 9b. Il explique aussitôt être un peu gêné d’ainsi dévaluer la performance de la jeune femme, mais opte pour l’honnêteté et assure que Rogora est capable de bien plus.

Le Tchèque explique avoir trouvé une méthode différente de celle de Ghisolfi (qu’il estime bien à 9b/+!) dans le crux du haut, un peu morphologique mais adaptable quand même. Il a passé un jour sur Erebor en avril, et trois de plus cette fois-ci.

“Un peu de temps”, “Ondra” et “Arco”? On se prend à rêver de quelques étincelles. Ghisolfi va-t-il lui ouvrir son projet actuel ? Le secteur de Laghel, avec son 9c potentiel, va-t-il rester fermé ? Le Tchèque va-t-il sortir le perfo ?

Adam Ondra decided to spend some time in Arco, the town where he got married in early September this year. And no sooner has he arrived on this sort of honeymoon that he clips the anchor of Erebor, the line bolted and FAed by his friend Stefano Ghisolfi in January this year.

The route, graded 9b/+, has since been repeated by Laura Rogora last month, which made her the first woman at that level. Sadly for both Italians, Ondra proposes 9b. He explains being embarrassed to downgrade the young woman’s performance, but goes for honesty and makes it clear that Laura is capable of rather more.

The Czech has found a different sequence to Ghisolfi’s (which he agrees is worth 9b/+) in the top crux: a bit morphology-dependent but with some leeway. He spent a day on it last April , and three this time round.

‘Some time’, ‘Ondra’ and ‘Arco’? One could be forgiven for thinking of fireworks. Will Ghisolfi open his current project to his friend? Will the Laghel sector, with its potential 9c, remain closed? Will Ondra draw his drill?

La compétitrice italienne Laura Rogora vient d’annoncer ce matin avoir réalisé la seconde ascension de la voie la plus dure de la botte, “Erebor” 9b/+ à Eremo di San Paolo, Arco. Ouverte et libérée par Stefano Ghisolfi en janvier dernier, cette voie offre une escalade très résistante sur prises minuscules avec un double jeté en guise de crux du milieu, avant un pas de bloc sommital dur à négocier.
Si la cotation de la voie venait à être confirmée, il s’agirait de la perf’ féminine la plus élevée de tous les temps, puisque jusqu’alors seules Angie Eiter (“Madame Ching”, “La Planta de Shiva”), Julia Chanourdie (“Eagle-4”) et Laura Rogora (“Ali Hulk sit start extension total”) avaient réalisé du 9b.

Italian top climber Laura Rogora just published this morning having climbed Italy’s hardest route with the second ascent of “Erebor”, Eremo Di San Paolo, Arco. Bolted and freed by Stefano Ghisolfi at the beginning of the year, this resistance testpiece on tiny holds offers a double dyno middle crux before a complicated and low percentage top section under the anchor.
If the grade is confirmed, it will be the best female rock climbing performance. Only Angie Eiter (“Madame Ching”, “La planta de Shiva”), Julia Chanourdie (“Eagle-4”) and Laura (“Ali Hulk extension total sit start”) have climbed 9b before.
