Le grimpeur brésilien Felipe Camargo vient de réaliser la première ascension d’une grande-voie très dure au pays, “Avenida Brasil” 8c, 280 mètres. La grande-voie très déversante se situe dans une énorme grotte au Parque do Petar (Alto Ribeira, Sud de Sao Paulo). Après 21h d’escalade, Felipe a libéré l’affaire pour une des grande-voies les plus difficiles d’Amérique du Sud. Voici en avant-première quelques images en attendant le film complet. Felipe est un adepte du genre, lui qui avait déjà libéré en 2016 la grande voie en plafond de Getu (Chine) “Corazon de Ensueno”, 8c aussi !
Brazilian climber Felipe Camargo just completed the first ascent of a very hard multi-pitch in his country, “Avenida Brasil” 8c, 280 meters. The very overhanging line is located in a huge cave in Parque do Petar (Alto Ribeira, South of Sao Paulo). Il n’y a pas que Seb Bouin qui est en forme dans la grotte de Flatanger ! Le mutant Suisse Dylan Chuat vient de réussir le test de conti classique de la grotte norvégienne, “Thor’s hammer” 9a/+ pour 50 mètres d’escalade ! Il nous livre son ressenti.
“C’est clairement la voie la plus longue que j’ai faite, notamment en toit comme ça, je manque d’expérience dans ce niveau. Je me suis particulièrement investi. C’est assez exigeant, notamment le haut dans le 8c de “Nordic Plumber” et sa rampe de plats tout en conti. Tu peux vraiment tomber partout, bien que je ne sois pas tombé après le bas. Pour le niveau, c’est dur à dire, c’est clair que c’est plus dur que les 9a que j’ai faits, mais Flatanger est une falaise un peu 3D et les méthodes ont évolué. Cependant pour le niveau de la voie, l’exigence, la longueur, j’ai trouvé ça difficile à négocier. J’ai commencé à travailler la voie en mode touriste, j’ai fait les sections dès la première séance, et j’avais déjà fait le 8c de fin avant donc j’étais confiant. Quand j’ai été prêt à enchainer j’ai eu des soucis avec la partie basse qui était très mouillée et donc c’était dur à négocier, avec de la manutention à faire en séchant les prises au PQ juste avant de faire un run. J’ai donc commencé par mettre des essais sans les 2-3 premiers mouvements et j’ai enchainé la voie depuis la 2e dégaine. Ensuite, j’ai dû attendre un certain temps que ça sèche pour essayer du sol, ça me rendait fou, mais je viens enfin de concrétiser ! C’est certainement la plus belle voie difficile que j’aie jamais faite, et sans doute l’une des plus incroyables de Flatanger !”
Seb Bouin is not the only one to be in good shape in the Flatanger cave! The Swiss mutant Dylan Chuat has just ticked the classic Norwegian cave stamina test, “Thor’s hammer” 9a/+ for 50 meters of climbing! He shares his feelings with us.
“It’s clearly the longest route I’ve done, especially in a roof like that, I lack experience in this level. I’ve worked particularly hard for it. It’s quite demanding, especially the top part which is the 8c of “Nordic Plumber” and its pumpy flat rail. You can really fall anywhere, even if I never fell after the lower section. For the grade it’s hard to say, it’s clearly harder than the 9as I’ve done before, but Flatanger is a bit of 3D crag and the betas have evolved. However for the level of the route, the requirement, the length, I found it difficult to deal with. I started working the route in tourist mode, I climbed the different sections of the route in the first session, and I had already sent the 8c finish before so I was confident. When I was ready to send I had problems with the lower part which was very wet and therefore it was hard to climb it, with wet holds I needed to dry with toilet paper just before an attempt. I sent the route from the 2nd quickdraw and then had to wait for it to dry to finally redpoint the route.”
Une nouvelle grande voie dure dans la poche de Kathy Choong et de son compagnon Jim Zimmermann avec “Hattori Hanzo” (8b+, une ligne de 7 longueurs nichée en face Nord du Titlis, Engelberg, Suisse) ! Voici le commentaire de Kathy laissé sur les réseaux.
“Trop contente de réaliser une ascension parfaite sans tomber de cette voie de 7 longueurs (5b, 6b, 7b, 6c, 8b+, 8a+, 7a) dans la journée. Et encore plus parfait, mon compagnon Jim Zimmermann a aussi réalisé la voie le même jour. Située en face Nord du Titlis, cette voie offre un vrai challenge mental et physique ! J’ai réalisé en tête toutes les longueurs, l’une après l’autre. Jim a réalisé en moul’ les 4 première longueurs “faciles” et je l’ai assuré pour les 3 dernières longueurs en tête. La voie démarre avec 4 longueurs en dalle qui sont cotées faciles. Mais la première longueur ne possède qu’un point, à peine plus dans les suivantes, petites prises, l’approche est déjà coton mentalement avant d’arriver dans les longueurs clé qui remontent un impressionnant et long dévers. On a fait face à pas mal d’échecs, en tombant dans les crux engagés des longueurs dévers ; la première fois qu’on a essayé la voie on n’a pas vu le sommet ! Mais la magie a opéré et jour après jour, grâce à une entraide mutuelle, on a pu appréhender mieux les mouvements et finalement grimper toutes les longueurs. Je voudrai remercier Mathias Trottmann qui a réalisé la première ascension en 2013, pour le travail titanesque qu’il a réalisé en équipant cette grande-voie dans cette face impressionnante, et aussi pour tout le soutien et les méthodes qu’il m’a apportés !”
A new hard MP under the belt of Kathy Choong, joined by her boyfriend Jim Zimmermann : “Hattori Hanzo” 8b+, 7 pitches, located on the North face of Titlis, Switzerland. Here is her commentary.
“So happy to complete in a perfect no-fall ascent Hattori Hanzo, 7 pitches, 8b+ max. (5b, 6b, 7b, 6c, 8b+, 8a+, 7a) in a day! And the best part is that my partner Jim Zimmermann also sent the route on the same day. Located on the north face of the Titlis this route was a great mental and physical challenge ! I led all the pitches, one after the other. Jim top-roped the four « easy » first pitches and I belayed him on lead for the 3 last.
The route starts with 4 vertical slab pitches which on paper are graded “easy”. Only one bolt on the first one, a few more in the following ones, very small holds, the approach is already quite tough mentally before arriving at the start of the crux pitches which follow in a long impressive overhang. We faced many failures, falling in the run-outs of the crux pitches and so unable, the first time we tried the route, to climb to the top ! But the magic happened and day after day, thanks to our mutual support, we could figure out the moves and finally climb all the pitches
I would like to thank Matthias Trottmann who did the first ascent in 2013, for the massive work he did when he bolted this route on this impressive face and for all the information & advice he gave me!“
*** Nomura Shinichiro presents Gakido V16 (first ascent) in a video: Japanese solved this Spring this long time project located in Chigobutai, Fukushima. An intense and powerful climbing for a boulder of this grade, as “Floatin” opened by Ruichi Murai at the beginning of winter season.
*** Matt Fultz ouvre “Brace for the Cure” V16 au Colorado sur le bloc de “Jade” : Le bloqueur américain annonce vidéo à la clé sur son compte Instagram la première ascension de ce 8C+ : un nouvel enchainement en gros dévers qu’il décrit comme sa première ascension la plus dure et son 2e problème le plus dur qu’il a réalisé. Il commence dans “Jade” pour traverser à gauche et remonter l’impressionnant panneau juste à côté du 8B+ classique. Un passage qui demande une précision au millimètre pour attraper des prises minuscules impossibles à ré-armer.
*** Matt Fultz opens “Brace for the Cure” V16 at “Jade” boulder, Colorado: American boulderer announces on his Instagram account with a video the first ascent of this V16: his hardest first ascent and his second hardest problem ever done. It starts in “Jade” then traversing left and going straight the big overhang juste close from the 8B+ classic. A problem which requires a lot of precision in order to stick the hands correctly on the rasor crimps.
Cap sur El Cap, l’expédition se poursuit. Accompagnée du talentueux grimpeur belge Seb Berthe qui a renoncé au Dawn Wall pour cette saison après un long siège ce printemps, la grimpeuse française Soline Kentzel vient de réaliser une bel exploit sur El Cap (Yosemite) avec une répétition en libre de “Golden Gate” (1000 m, 7c+/8a, 36 longueurs) après 9 jours en paroi ! Concernant l’ascension, Soline précise : “Nous avons grimpé en réversible tout le long (dans les longueurs plus faciles en 5.11) et enchainé les longueurs crux en tête tous les deux (au dessus du 5.12).” Seb Berthe décrit : “On a mis deux jours à arriver à la longueur en désescalade, la longueur 17. Soline est tombée dans quelques longueurs en 5.11 mais les a réalisées ensuite à l’essai suivant. Le 3ème jour fut un jour de repos sous la neige. Le 4ème jour, nous étions à la “Move pitch”. Le 5ème jour, elle a essayé la voie mais ne l’a pas enchainé. Le 6ème jour, nous avons effectué un jour de repos sous la pluie. Au 7ème jour, Soline a enchainé “Move pitch” à son 3ème essai, et on a bougé rapidement à the Tower. Elle a pu enchainer “Golden desert” durant la soirée à son premier essai. Le 8ème jour fut un nouveau repos forcé en raison de la pluie. Le 9ème jour fut consacré à la “A5 traverse” que Soline a pu réaliser en deux essais, dans un combat avec les bouteilles, et nous avons terminé au sommet pendant l’après-midi”. Pendant ces jours de repos forcés, nous avons dû nous serrer sur la toute petite vire où nous squattions en essayant constamment d’éviter d’être mouillés d’abord puis gelés ensuite… Un de nos sacs de couchage est même devenu totalement gelé et figé. Mais nous avons pu garder la motivation élevée et reprendre l’escalade dès que le mur était sec ! Pendant les journées d’escalade les plus ensoleillées, la glace fondait du haut du mur et d’impressionnants morceaux de glace tombaient. Toutes les 5min, le tirage au sort était lancé : il fallait arrêter de grimper, se coller contre le mur en attendant que ces morceaux de glace tombent tout autour de nous.” Ambiance !
Soline devient la 6ème grimpeuse à réaliser Golden Gate en libre — après Hazel Findlay, Florence Pinet, Emily Harrington (dans la journée !), la canadienne Bronwyn Hodgins et Amity Warme — et une des plus jeunes, à seulement 21 ans !
Cap sur El Cap expedition continues. Joined by talented Belgian climber Seb Berthe who gave up in his attempt to free climb the Dawn Wall, French woman Soline Kentzel (21 years old) could do a real feat on El Cap with a free ascent of classic “Golden Gate” (5.13a/b, 1000m) after 9 days spent on the wall! According to Soline, “We swapped the lead on easier pitches (5.11) and we both lead all the difficult pitches (up to 5.12).” Seb Berthe describes: “We took two days to reach the downclimb, pitch 17. She had a few falls on some 5.11 pitches of the first half but always sent them on her second try. Day 3 was a snowy restday. On day 4, we were at the “move pitch”. Day 5, she worked the pitch but could not send. Day 6, rainy restday. On day 7, she sent the Move pitch in her third try and we quickly moved to Tower to the people. She could even send the Golden desert pitch on her first try that evening. Day 8 was a forced rainy restday. On day 9, she worked the A5 traverse and then sent it 2tries after in a pumpy battle, we ran to the summit the same afternoon!
We went through some epic snow storm and rain showers wich made surviving on this wall a true challenge. During these forced restdays we had to squeeze in the really small ledge we brought constantly trying to avoid being wet first and frozen after… One of our sleeping bag even became totally stiff and icy. But we could keep the motivation really high and got back to climbing as soon as the wall was dry! During the sunnier climbing days, the ice was melting from the top of the wall throwing on us impressive ice chunks. Every 5min, lottery was on: we had to stop climbing, stick ourselves against the wall waiting for these pieces of ice to fall all around us.”
Soline becomes the 6th woman to free climb “Golden Gate” (after Hazel Findlay, Florence Pinet, Emily Harrington (in a day!), Canadian Bronwyn Hodgins and Amity Warme) and one of the youngest at 21 years old!

Découvrez-le en action dans “Ace of Spade” (9a+) dans l’Utah qu’il était très proche de flasher avec un flow impressionnant, ou encore ne faisant qu’une bouchée de certains blocs extrêmes des US “Box Therapy”, “Gran Illusion” (8C+) ou encore “Pegasus” à Joe’s Valley (8C). Sean monte encore en puissance le printemps dernier avec quelques victoires en coupe du Monde, une en bloc à Salt Lake, puis deux autres en diff’ à Villars et Chamonix en début d’été avant d’aller conquérir “Bibliographie” (9b+) à Céüse. La Norvégienne Mari Augusta Salvesen est une grimpeuse très douée dont les qualités ne sont plus à démontrer, capable de réaliser du 8A bloc, comme des voies dures en trad et en big wall. Plutôt spécialiste de trad avec des réalisations jusqu’au 8b, et un compagnon qui se prénomme Pete Whittaker, un des maîtres du offwidth mondial, Mari vient juste de réaliser un bel exploit avec le flash de la célèbre fissure déversante de “Belly Full of Bad Berries” 8a à Indian Creek dans l’Utah, la Mecque de la fissure. En effet, Mari a préparé le flash de cette voie qui remonte un dévers très prononcé à 45° sur 25 mètres grâce aux Wide Boys, qui en ont profité pour immortaliser l’ascension en vidéo. Tom Randall commente en disant que Mari a dû changer ses méthodes sur au moins 1/3 de l’itinéraire par rapport à celles qu’ils ont données avec Pete, ce qui rend encore la réalisation encore plus impressionnante ! Le combat fut mémorable ! Bravo ! Un aperçu de la voie avec la vidéo d’Adam Ondra, où ce dernier se fait aussi sévèrement secouer.
Norwegian climber Mari Augusta Salvesen is a top climber, having performed in nearly all disciplines. But she is more turned on trad climbing with notable ascents until 8b an the fact of her partner is Pete Whittaker, well-known as offwidth master. Mari just did an impressive send with the flash of famous offwidth “Belly Full of Bad Berries” 8a at crack climbing Mecca, Indian Creek, Utah. She prepared the flash of this 45° overhanging 25 meters crack with the Wide Boys, immortalizing the scene with an impressive vid. According to Tom Randall, Mari should find her own betas and was quite onsight for 1/3 of the route, the betas given by Pete and him didn’t work. Mari finally succeed after a quite huge fight. Nous avons surpris le génie bleausard Charles Albert en flagrant délit de plantage d’orteils afin de s’offrir la première ascension de “Bloody Sunday” 8B+ à The Scoop dans le Colorado. Un bloc qu’il pourrait être tenté de rallonger à l’avenir avec un départ bas dans lequel il a aussi fait tous les mouvements. À noter que Charles sera à l’honneur du Reel Rock 16 qui sera disponible fin mars, ci-dessous le trailer, histoire de patienter !
We caught amazing French barefoot climber Charles Albert in his typical toe crimping madness for the first ascent of “Bloody Sunday” 8B+ at The Scoop, Colorado. A sitstart version also seems to be on the cards, since he has already done all the moves. Charles will be headlining Reel Rock 16, coming up at the end of the month. Fin février, Le grimpeur américain Carlo Traversi a répété une des voies en trad les plus dures du monde : “Magic Line” 8c+ à Vernal Falls dans le parc national du Yosemite. En plus de la difficulté technique, le placement des protections est vraiment compliqué dans cette voie de 35 mètres remontant un fine fissure en granite les pieds à plat, proposant un pas de bloc en 8A en intro, une suite en 8a voie avant un pas de bloc sommital en 7C. C’est Ron Kauk qui a réalisé la première ascension de cette voie en 1996 avec les protections déjà en place et proposé 8c. 20 ans plus tard, son fils Lonnie répètera la voie, une première fois avec les protections posées, puis une seconde fois en plus pur style en posant les friends, proposant une difficulté supérieure à 8c+. En 2019, la grimpeuse britanique Hazel Findlay réalisa la 3ème ascension. Connu pour ses réalisations en bloc (notamment “Creature from the black lagoon” 8C+) ou en escalade sportive (“Empath” 9a+), Carlo Traversi est un véritable touche à tout puisqu’il avait déjà réalisé une autre voie extrême en trad dans le Yosemite avec la seconde ascension de “Meltdown” (8c+ aussi) en 2018, 2 ans après la première par Beth Rodden. Il empoche donc la 4ème ascension de “Magic Line” dans des conditions hivernales, avec de la neige au pied de la voie ! Apparemment Traversi adore les conditions très froides sur granite, lui qui avait déjà travaillé la voie dans des conditions glaciaires il y a quelques années ! (Vidéo ci-dessous!)
At the end of February, American climber Carlo Traversi repeated one of the toughest trad routes in the world with “Magic Line” 8c+ at Vernal Falls, Yosemite National Park. In addition to the technical difficulty of the climb, the placement of the gear is really complicated in this fine 35 meters granite crack with poor feet, offering a bouldering step around V11 in intro followed by a 5.13+ route and a top 7C boulder crux. It was Ron Kauk who made the first ascent of this route in 1996 with the gear already pre-placed and proposed 8c. 20 years later, his son Lonnie repeated the line, first with the gear in place, then a second time in more pure style with the friends, proposing an 8c+ grade. In 2019, British climber Hazel Findlay made the 3rd ascent. Known for his achievements in bouldering (notably “Creature from the black lagoon” 8C+) or in sportclimbing (“Empath” 9a+), Carlo Traversi is a real all-rounder. He had already completed another extreme trad route in the Yosemite with the second ascent of “Meltdown” (8c+ too) in 2018, 2 years after the first ascent by Beth Rodden. He therefore grabbed the 4th ascent of “Magic Line” in winter conditions, with snow at the foot of the route! Apparently Traversi loves very cold conditions on granite, he who had already worked this route in glacial conditions a few years ago! (Video above!)
En un peu plus de 3 mois, la grimpeuse canadienne Allison Vest (26 ans) a connu une belle progression. Elle était déjà connue, avec une liste de réalisations bien ancrées dans le 8A+ bloc et deux 8B. Davantage tournée vers la compétition (3 fois championne nationale), elle a décidé de faire un break et de prendre une année sabbatique pour grimper dehors. Bien lui en a pris puisqu’elle empile les blocs durs, notamment avec la réalisation de trois 8B à Joe’s Valley cet automne dont le classique “Blackout”, ou encore le très beau “Masterpiece” (vidéo ci-dessous). Mais en ce début d’année 2022, Allison vient de franchir un nouveau pallier.
En effet, elle vient d’annoncer la récente réussite de son premier 8B+ “Show your scars” à Ogden non loin de Salt Lake City dans l’Utah. Ce bloc, considéré comme facile pour le niveau avec 14 ascensions en 2 ans (il en faut bien un pour commencer), propose une escalade très athlétique des plus physiques sur 10 mouvements (vidéo de la 2e ascension ci-dessous). In just over 3 months, Canadian climber Allison Vest (26) has made great progress. Known in the past for a list of ticks in the V12 range and 2 8Bs, she is currently on fire. Previously more focused on competitions (3-time national champion), she decided to take a year off the circuit to climb outside. She did well with some hard boulders and the fast send of three 8Bs at Joe’s Valley this fall, including the classic “Blackout”, or the very beautiful “Masterpiece” (video above). But at the start of 2022, Allison just reached a new level. Indeed, the Canadian just announced the recent success of her first 8B+ “Show your scars” in Ogden close to Salt Lake City in Utah. This boulder, considered easy for the level with 14 climbs in 2 years (incremental, that’s how to do it), offers a very athletic and physical climb over 10 movements (video of the 2nd ascent below). *** Katie Lamb s’offre son 3ème 8B+ avec un classique de Buttermilks (Bishop) en Californie, “Direct North”. Cette ligne ouverte par le local des lieux Shawn Diamond en 2009 démarre assis au pied de l’imposante boule caractéristique des lieux de Grandma Peabody. C’est une sortie directe plus difficile du 8B classique de “Direction”. Le problème propose une escalade athlétique et assez longue (12 mouvements difficiles) dans un dévers sur arquées. C’est déjà le 3ème 8B+ bloc de la grimpeuse américaine de 24 ans qui avait réalisé l’été dernier les ultra-classiques “Jade” et “New Base Line”.
*** La collante se poursuit à Fontainebleau : Malgré des conditions un poil plus humides jeudi, Max Bertone (14 ans) a comme sa sœur profité de la collante cette semaine pour réaliser son second 8B bloc avec le magnifique “Saruman du bas” à Cuvier Sorcières (derrière le Rempart). Ce bloc assez récent (2017) mais majeur a été découvert et ouvert en départ débout par Guillaume Joubert (8A) avant que Nico Pelorson n’ouvre le départ bas dans la foulée. Un bloc magnifique très bleausard tout en sensations, compression, et talons sur une arête déversante. Voici la vidéo du run gagnant du jeune réunionnais qui avait déjà empoché le debout en 2020.
*** Brooke Raboutou dans le Tessin : On l’avait quittée à Red Rocks avec “Trieste”, son projet en bloc naturel de 2021, la championne franco-américaine découvre actuellement les blocs du Tessin en Suisse. Brooke vient de réaliser la première féminine de “La Proue” 8B classique de Cresciano, tout en blocages sur réglettes plates et pieds à plat…

*** Katie Lamb offers her 3rd 8B+ boulder with a classic from Buttermilks, Bishop, California, “Direct North”. This line opened by local Shawn Diamond in 2009 is a sitstart of Grandma Peabody’s giant bowl. It’s an harder exit of classic 8B called “Direction”. The problem proposes an athletic and long climb (12 hard moves) on crimps in an overhang. It’s Katie’s 3rd 8B+ after the send of “Jade” and “New Base Line” last summer!
*** Sticky conditions in Font continue: Despite a little bit of humidity on Thursday, Max Bertone (14 years old) could take profit of cold and quite dry conditions in Font like his sister. He just climbed his second 8B boulder with “Saruman du bas” in Cuvier Sorcières (a little bit behind Rempart). This recent gem was discovered and opened by Guillaume Joubert for the stand (2017, 8A) and Nico Pelorson added immediatly an 8B low start. A very beautiful boulder, Font style, smooth climbing, compression on sloper, heelhooks and some balancy moves on an overhanging arete. The video of the send in the video juste above.

Une croix avec des méthodes spéciales, Giuliano préférant serrer une arquée et relancer plutôt que de réaliser l’extraordinaire derviche no foot qui a fait la renommée du bloc. Pour le grand mouvement il a essayé en vain une autre méthode par un bidoigt arqué des plus horribles…

Ce bloc propose une escalade athlétique sur une rampe horizontale déversante, un des plus beaux blocs du coin. C’est la seconde féminine du problème après Isabelle Faus il y a deux ans.
Meanwhile, Serbian climber Stasa Gejo has just climbed “Delusion of Grandeur” 8A+/B in Chironico, video below. This boulder offers athletic climbing on an overhanging horizontal rail, one of the most beautiful boulders in the area. This is the second female ascent after Isabelle Faus’ two years ago.
Après un premier trip sur place au début de l’année, Brooke Raboutou empoche à nouveau un bloc dur avec le panneau très à doigts de “Trieste” 8B+. Ce classique de Red Rocks (Nevada, US) avait été ouvert par Paul Robinson en 2014, il est situé au secteur de First Creek Canyon. Il aura fallu 3 jours à Brooke lors de second séjour, empochant le bloc au dernier essai de la journée.
Cette dernière commente sur Instagram : “Bon sang, cela fait du bien de rétablir en haut de ce bloc qui m’avait poussée dans mes retranchements au niveau physique et mental il y a un an. De retour, je me suis sentie plus forte, j’ai pu mettre les états d’âme et la pression de côté, contrairement au précédent séjour. J’adore me dépasser et me perfectionner pour ce genre de choses, c’est un processus que je veux continuer à entretenir. Au projet suivant !”
C’est déjà le 3ème 8B+ bloc de Brooke qui avait déjà réalisé “Muscle Car” et “Jade”. Et l’histoire n’est peut-être pas finie puisque le départ assis de “Trieste” (8C) est potentiellement dans son viseur…
After a first trip to the area at the beginning of 2021, Brooke Raboutou just completed one of the hard classics of Red Rocks, Nevada, with “Trieste” V14 opened by Paul Robinson in 2014. The boulder went down on her last try of the 3rd day. Brooke wrote on Instagram:
“Damn, it feels good to stand on top of a boulder that pushed my physical and mental limits a year ago. Coming back, I felt much stronger and was able to let go of expectations and lighten the pressure I put on myself the previous trip. The process of pushing myself and growing from it is one I will forever admire and continue to chase. Onto the next project!“
It’s her third V14, Brooke having already climbed “Muscle Car” and “Jade”. The story is maybe not finished because “Trieste” has a sit start in the 8C range which could be her next target. Wait and see…
Les derniers 8C+ bloc sont l’oeuvre de l’américain Taylor McNeill et du belge Simon Lorenzi ! Après 3 ans d’efforts et plus de 50 jours de travail, Taylor a réussi la première ascension de “Moonlight Sonata”, le bloc le plus dur de Joe’s Valley, une proue à compression qu’il propose à 8C+, vidéo ci-dessous à la clé. Jusqu’alors, Taylor avait déjà réussi quelques blocs extrêmes comme “Squoze” (8C) , “Southern Drawl” (8C) ou encore “The Big Island” (8B+/C à Bleau).
On n’avait pas donné de ses nouvelles depuis l’ouverture de “Soudain Seul”, le Belge Simon Lorenzi vient quant à lui d’annoncer une répétition du classique Suisse de Val Bavona “Off the wagon low start” 8C+ après les ascensions de Raboutou, Webb, Woods et Cameroni. Voici son commentaire laissé sur les réseaux sociaux : “J’ai essayé la version basse de bloc le jour où j’ai réussi le grand mouvement du départ debout. Après avoir passé quelques sessions sur ce bloc ces deux derniers mois, tombant à chaque fois au même mouvement j’ai finalement trouvé la clé il y a 2 semaines pendant une nuit pluvieuse. C’était mon dernier jour et le réta était mouillé donc j’ai décidé de trouver quelque chose pour dompter davantage ce mouvement clé. J’ai réglé de petits détails qui m’a permis de faire le mouvement 5 fois sur 10. Du coup j’ai compris que la session suivante pouvait être la bonne. Cette semaine je suis venu à Sonlerto pour une session. Le seul jour grimpable était hier à cause de la pluie. Donc j’ai fait la route depuis la Belgique (9 heures) mardi en espérant que ce jour serait assez. J’ai commencé à essayer à 15h mais après 3 heures et environ 15 essais je tombais toujours à ce fameux mouvement, et je commençais à devenir fou et vraiment fatigué. Ma dernière option a été de prendre un gros repos et je suis allé voir Clem Lechaptois et Dave Graham essayer “Roadkill” pendant une heure. Je suis revenu pour donner mes derniers essais. Après une première tentative pas terrible, j’ai décidé de remettre immédiatement un nouvel essai pour garder mes sensations dans le crux. Cela s’est passé bien mieux que prévu, et quelques cris plus tard, j’étais au sommet du bloc !”
The latest 8C+ boulder sends are the business of the American Taylor McNeill and the Belgian Simon Lorenzi! After 3 years of effort and more than 50 days of work, Taylor has successfully completed the first ascent of “Moonlight Sonata”, the hardest boulder in Joe’s Valley, a compression prow that he proposes at 8C+, video below. Until then, Taylor had already succeeded in some extreme boulders like “Squoze” (8C), “Southern Drawl” (8C) or even “The Big Island” (8B+/C in Bleau).
Quite silent since his first ascent of “Soudain Seul”, The Belgian Simon Lorenzi has just announced a repeat of the Swiss classic of Val Bavona “Off the wagon low start” 8C + after the ascents of Raboutou, Webb, Woods and Cameroni. Here is his comment left on social media: “I started to try the low start as soon as i did the big move from the stand once. After spending few sessions in the boulder the last two months and falling at the same move every time i finally found the key 2 weeks ago during a rainy night. It was my last day and the top out was wet so i decided to try something to improve THE crux move. Surprisingly i found a small trick and did the move around 5 times out of 10 tries. From there i felt that the next session could be the one. So this week i went to Sonlerto for one session. The only climbable day was yesterday because of the rain so i did the road from belgium (9hrs) thuesday hoping that the day after would be enough. Wednsday i started to try at 3pm but after 3 hours and 15th tries falling at the same f****** move i was going crazy but also too tired. My last option was to have a big rest so i went to see Dave Graham and Clément Lechaptois trying “Road Kill” for 1h. I came back to the Wagon to give my last few attempts. My first attempt was’nt very good so i decided to go quickly afterwards to keep the feeling of the crux. It worked better than expected and few screams later i was standing on the top of the boulder!”
L’américaine Isabelle Faus coche un nouveau 8B+/V14 avec la ligne “Shadow Walker” située sur le site de SwissCo dans le Colorado (USA). C’est la troisième ascension du bloc après celle de Charlie Barron en décembre 2020 puis celle de Jimmy Webb en juin dernier. Isabelle Faus réalise ainsi la première ascension féminine. La grimpeuse est une habituée de cette cotation puisque que “Shadow Walker” est son 7ème bloc dans le 8B+/V14 avec pour dernier en date “Emasculator” durant l’été 2020. La vidéo de cette croix datant de cet été est visible dans la vidéo ci dessous compilant plusieurs de ses réalisations à SwissCo (8’11 pour “Shadow Walker”).
The American Isabelle Faus ticks a new 8B + / V14 with the “Shadow Walker” boulder located on the SwissCo site in Colorado (USA). This is the third ascent of the boulder after the one of Charlie Barron in December 2020 and the one of Jimmy Webb last June. Isabelle Faus thus realised the first female ascent. She is used to this grade since “Shadow Walker” is her 7th boudler in the 8B + / V14 grade, the 6th being “Emasculator” during the summer 2020. The video of the “Shadow Walker” ascent -she sent it this summer- can be seen in a compilation video with several Faus’ achievements at SwissCo (8’11 for “Shadow Walker“).
Dans un long article ce printemps, nous tentions de mettre en exergue l’importance de la préservation en escalade en milieu naturel. Le court-métrage “Les Emmerdeurs” traite de la cause écologique à travers du cas de l’emblématique falaise de Claret dans l’Hérault. Haut lieu de l’escalade sportive dans le Sud de la France dans les 90’s sous l’impulsion de grimpeurs locaux iconiques comme Lucien Berardini, Pierre Rouzo ou Hugues Beauzille, Claret n’en demeure pas moins, comme beaucoup d’autres sites, un refuge ornithologique et un havre de biodiversité. C’est à l’issue d’une concertation entre équipeurs locaux et naturalistes qu’il a été décidé de déséquiper tout un secteur situé à gauche de la falaise afin de permettre le survie de certaines espèces. In a long article this Spring, we tried to highlight the importance of environment preservation in rockclimbing. The short film “Les Emmerdeurs” deals with the ecological cause through the case of the emblematic crag of Claret in Hérault. High place of sportclimbing in the South of France in the 90’s with iconic local climbers like Lucien Berardini, Pierre Rouzo or Hugues Beauzille, Claret is like many other climbing places a refuge for birds and a haven of biodiversity. After a consultation between local climbers and naturalists the decision was taken to take off the bolts in an entire sector located to the left of the cliff in order to allow the survival of certain species. Après Sasha DiGiulian, Margo Hayes, Michaela Kiersch et Annie Chouinard, la grimpeuse allemande Solveig Korherr, 23 ans a réussi dimanche la cinquième ascension féminine de la classique dure de Red River Gorge, “Pure Imagination”. La grimpeuse allemande, âgée de 23 ans, qui a réalisé son premier 9a cet été avec “La Cabane au Canada”, est aussi une amoureuse du Red. En 2019, Solveig y avait déjà enchainé “Lucifer”, puis projeté “Pure Imagination”, une ligne qui était restée ancrée dans sa tête depuis 2 ans. Sur son compte Instagram, Solveig commente :
“Cette voie m’avait échappée la dernière fois que j’étais là. Pendant deux ans, j’ai été obsédée par l’idée de revenir. C’était une de mes lignes de rêve ! La première fois que je l’ai essayée, j’ai été époustouflée par le fait qu’il soit possible de tenir ces petites arquées dans un panneau aussi déversant. J’ai persévéré un peu et fait de rapides progrès, mais je n’étais pas assez en forme pour pouvoir empiler toutes les sections. Il y a une semaine, nous sommes revenus dans le Red et j’ai tout de suite sauté sur “Pure Imagination”. J’étais motivée comme jamais ! J’ai enfin pu élever mon niveau. Je me sentais plus forte sur les prises, notamment dans la dernière partie très soutenue, mais j’en bavais pas mal encore au crux du bas avec cette fameuse arquée qui te coupe les doigts, aiguisée comme un couperet. Dimanche, avec des conditions polaires et une bonne ambiance à la falaise, j’ai été capable d’enchainer la partie du bas et de clipper le relais ! Merci à tout le monde pour les encouragements !”

The German rockclimber, 23, who sent her first 9a this summer with “La Cabane au Canada” is also fond of the Kentucky mecca. On her previous trip in 2019, Solveig climbed “Lucifer”, then projected “Pure Imagination”, a line which has stayed in her mind for the last 2 years! She reports on Instagram:
“This was the one that got away last time that I was in the Red. I have been obsessed with coming back to it for the last two years. It is a dream line of mine! The first time I went up it, I was mind-blown at how it would even be possible to hold on to these tiny little crimps on such a steep panel. I persevered a bit and made some very good progress back then but I just wasn’t quite fit enough to link all the sections.
One week ago we finally made it back to the Red and I immediately hopped on Pure Imagination. My psych was flying high over the moon! I could definitely tell that I levelled up. I felt much stronger on the holds especially in the sustained upper part but I was still struggling a bit with the lower crux with the famous crimp that cuts your fingers and that is as thin as the sharp edge of a knife.
On Sunday with some icy conditions and phenomenal vibes at the cliff, I was able to climb through the lower part and managed to clip the anchors! Thanks everybody for cheering on!“
Une des voies les plus difficiles des US, “Flex Luthor”, vient d’être répétée par le grimpeur américain Carlo Traversi. Située au magnifique secteur perché Fortress of Solitude de Rifle (Colorado), “Flex Luthor” a été établie par Tommy Caldwell il y a près de 20 ans (en 2003) ; elle n’est autre que le premier 5.15 (9a+) des USA. La seconde ascension vient d’avoir lieu il y a quelques jours grâce à Matty Hong qui propose une réévaluation à 9b. C’est au tour de Carlo qui a travaillé la voie avec Matty de boucler aussi le projet, un enchainement extrêmement résistant de 30 mètres qui lui aura donné du fil à retordre. C’est la 4ème voie en 9ème degré pour Carlo, un grimpeur polyvalent capable d’éclats en falaise (on lui doit la première ascension d’Empath), en bloc avec une répétition de “Creature from the black lagoon” 8C+, en trad avec “Meldown” 8c+ ou en big wall avec une répétition de “Magic Mushroom” à El Cap. Un film sur l’ascension de “Flex Luthor” sortira prochainement.
One of the most difficult routes in the United States, “Flex Luthor”, has just been repeated by American climber Carlo Traversi. Located in the magnificent and remote sector Fortress of Solitude of Rifle (Colorado), “Flex Luthor” was established almost 20 years ago (in 2003)by Tommy Caldwell. It is none other than the first 5.15 (9a+) in the US. The second ascent took place just a few days ago thanks to Matty Hong, who proposes an upgrade to 9b. It was soon Carlo’s turn, who worked the route with Matty, to also complete the project, an extremely resistant 30-meter route which gave him a hard time. This is the 4th route in the 9th degree by Carlo, an all-rounder climber capable of feats in rock climbing (we owe him the first ascent of “Empath”), in bouldering with a repetition of “Creature from the black lagoon” 8C +, in trad climbing with “Meltdown” 8c+, or big walling with a repeat of “Magic Mushroom” on El Cap. A film on the repeat of “Flex Luthor” will be released shortly.
Suite à la réalisation à vue de “Fish Eye” et “American Hustle”, tous deux 8c, par Janja Garnbret la semaine passée à Oliana, nous sommes allés poser quelques questions à la championne olympique. En bonus sous l’interview, on vous offre la vidéo de Janja à vue dans les principales difficultés de “American Hustle”.
– Quel était l’objectif de ta venue à Oliana ? Je voulais essayer quelques voies et voir comment je me sentais en grimpant ici et je voulais aussi voir ce que je pouvais donner à vue.
– Comment t’es venue l’idée d’essayer “Fish Eye” ? Je ne pensais pas vraiment essayer un 8c à vue, mais plus tard ce jour là j’ai juste décidé de mettre un essai dans “Fish Eye”. Pas de pression, juste de l’escalade.
– Comment ça s’est passé pendant le à vue ? Peux-tu décrire ton escalade ? Je me sentais super bien, relâchée et concentrée. Je n’ai pas paniqué si je ne comprenais pas à une séquence tout de suite, je me sentais bien. Je pense que j’ai grimpé assez vite, et cela était assez approprié. J’ai pris du temps dans la dalle finale car il n’y avait pas trop de magnésie et je ne voulais vraiment pas me la coller.
– Tu étais pétée ? Quand as-tu compris que tu pouvais la faire ? Dans la première partie difficile je n’étais pas si pétée. Jusqu’au dernier bac de la partie déversante j’ai grimpé très vite, je me suis reposée là où j’ai pu et à cette prise-là, j’ai compris que je pouvais la faire. Mais la dernière partie était assez piégeuse donc j’aurais pu tomber partout, j’ai réussi à rester calme et à trouver les séquences.
– Avais-tu essayé de réaliser un 8c à vue avant ? Tu penses comme moi que tes limites sont plus loin ? Je n’ai jamais essayé de réaliser un 8c à vue, avant j’avais fait des essais flashs dans les 8c, ou alors j’avais dû les travailler un petit peu avant de les enchainer. Mais maintenant je pense que si je trouve une voie qui me convient bien je peux essayer de réaliser à vue quelque chose de plus dur.
– Peux tu décrire ton à vue d'”American Hustle” ? Un gros combat ? Ma décision était globalement la même qu’avec “Fish Eye”. J’ai juste décidé d’y mettre un essai, sans pression. De mon point de vue c’est plus dur que “Fish Eye” et j’ai eu à batailler un peu plus. J’étais super relax et j’ai pu réussir les mouvements assez rapidement. Ce n’était pas si évident, et j’ai vraiment dû me battre dans certaines parties de la voie.
– Peux tu comparer “Fish Eye” et “American Hustle” ? Quelle voie as-tu trouvé la plus dure ? Aha j’ai déjà répondu dans la question précédente. Je dirai que “Fish Eye” est plus facile et aussi plus triviale dans la partie dure déversante, mais la partie du haut est piégeuse. D’un autre côté, “Amercan Hustle” est plus dure, plus puissante et intense mais la partie du haut est très belle et plus évidente. J’étais assez perdue dans certaines parties mais j’étais plus confiante dans le haut. Mais de mon point de vue “American Hustle” a été plus dure à faire à vue.
– Tu es allée repérer “La dura dura” et “Joe mama”. Reviendras-tu pour les essayer à fond ? Ou as-tu des projets à la maison ? Je vais vraiment devoir revenir ! Finir ce que j’ai commencé. J’adore essayer d’autres voies. J’ai des projets à la maison mais si j’ai l’opportunité de venir à Oliana je la saisirai.
– Quels sont tes rêves, les choses que tu aimerais accomplir en milieu naturel ? Ou préfères-tu te concentrer uniquement sur des objectifs en compétition ? Bien sûr que j’en ai ! J’aime les deux ! J’ai juste besoin de trouver les bonnes périodes pour le faire. J’ai encore des choses à faire en compétition mais j’ai aussi des projets en extérieur dans un coin de ma tête.
We asked a few questions to Janja Garnbret after her onsight of “Fish Eye” and “American Hustle”, both 8c in Oliana last week. In addition, you will find the video we shot of the main difficulties of her onsight send of “American Hutsle”. Enjoy!
– What was the plan for your stay in Oliana? I wanted to check out some routes to see how I feel, but mostly just climbing and I also wanted to see how far I can go with my onsight.
– How did the idea of trying to onsight “Fish Eye” come up? Actually I never thought of trying to onsight an 8c, but later that day I just decided that I would give “Fish eye” a go. No pressure, just climbing.
– How did you feel during the onsight? Can you describe your climbing? I felt super good, very relaxed and focused. I didn’t panic if I didn’t see a sequence right away, I was super chill. I think I was climbing pretty fast, resting where I thought was appropriate. I took some time in the last slabby part because there was no chalk anywhere and I really didn’t want to fall there.
– How was your pump? When did you understand that you would actually succeed? In the first “harder” part I wasn’t that pumped. Up to the last jug of the more overhanging part I climbed pretty fast, resting where I needed and there I realised that I could succeed. But the last part was very tricky so I could fall anywhere but I stayed calm and slowly figured out the sequence.
– Have you ever attempted to onsight an 8c before? Do you think-as many do-that you haven’t reached your limits yet? I have never attempted to onsight an 8c, before it was more flash attempt or I had to work a bit to send the thing. But now I think with the right route I could also try to onsight something harder.
– Can you describe your onsight of American Hustle? A big fight? My decision was pretty much the same as with “Fish eye”. I just decided to give it a go, no pressure to onsight it. In my opinion it’s harder than Fish eye so I also had to fight a bit more. But I was very relaxed and could solve the moves pretty fast. It was not so obvious so I had to really fight in a few sections of the route.
– Can you compare your ascents of “Fish Eye” and “American Hustle”? Which route did you find harder? I actually already answered in the previous answer but I would say “Fish eye” is easier and more obvious in the harder overhanging section, and the top part is very tricky. On the other hand “American Hustle” is harder, more powerful and intense and less obvious. I would say I was pretty lost on some parts of the route but the top part was very nice and obvious compared to the one in “Fish eye”. So in my opinion American Hustle was harder to onsight.
– You checked out “La dura dura” and “Joe mama”. Will you come back to redpoint them or other routes? Or are the plans you alluded to closer to home? I definitely need to come back! To finish what I started. I would also love to try other routes. I also have some projects at home but if I get a chance to go to Oliana I will take it.
– Have you got some dreams of rock climbing achievements, or you prefer to focus on competitions? Of course I do. I love both! I just need to find the right time when to do what. I still have some things to do in competitions, but I also have some outdoor projects in mind.
