Fin février, Le grimpeur américain Carlo Traversi a répété une des voies en trad les plus dures du monde : “Magic Line” 8c+ à Vernal Falls dans le parc national du Yosemite. En plus de la difficulté technique, le placement des protections est vraiment compliqué dans cette voie de 35 mètres remontant un fine fissure en granite les pieds à plat, proposant un pas de bloc en 8A en intro, une suite en 8a voie avant un pas de bloc sommital en 7C. C’est Ron Kauk qui a réalisé la première ascension de cette voie en 1996 avec les protections déjà en place et proposé 8c. 20 ans plus tard, son fils Lonnie répètera la voie, une première fois avec les protections posées, puis une seconde fois en plus pur style en posant les friends, proposant une difficulté supérieure à 8c+. En 2019, la grimpeuse britanique Hazel Findlay réalisa la 3ème ascension. Connu pour ses réalisations en bloc (notamment “Creature from the black lagoon” 8C+) ou en escalade sportive (“Empath” 9a+), Carlo Traversi est un véritable touche à tout puisqu’il avait déjà réalisé une autre voie extrême en trad dans le Yosemite avec la seconde ascension de “Meltdown” (8c+ aussi) en 2018, 2 ans après la première par Beth Rodden. Il empoche donc la 4ème ascension de “Magic Line” dans des conditions hivernales, avec de la neige au pied de la voie ! Apparemment Traversi adore les conditions très froides sur granite, lui qui avait déjà travaillé la voie dans des conditions glaciaires il y a quelques années ! (Vidéo ci-dessous!)

At the end of February, American climber Carlo Traversi repeated one of the toughest trad routes in the world with “Magic Line” 8c+ at Vernal Falls, Yosemite National Park. In addition to the technical difficulty of the climb, the placement of the gear is really complicated in this fine 35 meters granite crack with poor feet, offering a bouldering step around V11 in intro followed by a 5.13+ route and a top 7C boulder crux. It was Ron Kauk who made the first ascent of this route in 1996 with the gear already pre-placed and proposed 8c. 20 years later, his son Lonnie repeated the line, first with the gear in place, then a second time in more pure style with the friends, proposing an 8c+ grade. In 2019, British climber Hazel Findlay made the 3rd ascent. Known for his achievements in bouldering (notably “Creature from the black lagoon” 8C+) or in sportclimbing (“Empath” 9a+), Carlo Traversi is a real all-rounder. He had already completed another extreme trad route in the Yosemite with the second ascent of “Meltdown” (8c+ too) in 2018, 2 years after the first ascent by Beth Rodden. He therefore grabbed the 4th ascent of “Magic Line” in winter conditions, with snow at the foot of the route! Apparently Traversi loves very cold conditions on granite, he who had already worked this route in glacial conditions a few years ago! (Video above!)
