Filmé et monté par Fred Ripert, voici un petit court-métrage sur une des King Lines du Midi, “Tête de Gondole” (8b+) sur la falaise du Boffi, avec comme grimpeuse la forte falaisiste Caroline Minvielle. Cette voie équipée en 2000 par Ivan Sorro remonte une magnifique proue aérienne.
– Pourquoi avoir choisi de mettre en évidence “Tête de gondole” ?
“Tête de Gondole” c’était la voie proposée aux stars féminines de la grimpe pendant le RocTrip de 2008 au Boffi. J’y avais participé, je grimpais dans le 7c/+ à l’époque et voir toutes les machines se donner à fond pour essayer de faire cette ligne incroyable, ça m’a mis des étoiles dans les yeux. C’était bien trop dur pour moi à ce moment-là mais elle est restée dans un coin de ma tête et la petite graine du rêve était plantée !
– Comment s’est passé le travail de la voie ?
Je n’ai pas regrimpé au Boffi jusqu’en 2021 et en avril, quand j’y retourne enfin, c’est clairement pour aller mettre les doigts dans “Tête de Gondole”. Cette ligne impressionne et comme souvent, le plus dur est d’oser la rencontre ! Les premières montées sont compliquées. Visiblement la voie n’a pas été faite depuis des années. Du lichen recouvre les prises, il y a très peu de traces de passage qui pourraient indiquer quelle prise utiliser et l’itinéraire sur la proue n’est pas toujours évident à élucider entre passer à gauche ou à droite de celle-ci. Je bute deux dégaines sous le relais, là où la voie se corse réellement. Le lendemain, je passe par le haut, sur une stat’, pour brosser les prises, enlever le lichen et imaginer les séquences. Les mouvements que j’avais imaginés fonctionnent mais il m’en manque un. J’arrive mauvaise main sur une prise clef et je ne trouve pas la solution pour y être de l’autre main. Nouvelle journée et appel à un ami ! C’est Pierre Soulé qui débloquera mon problème en me donnant la clef : un coincement de mollet derrière l’arête en me disant que ce n’est pas ça le pas dur de la voie. Ouf ! Clairement, je n’y avais pas pensé ! Puis les essais commencent, je tombe rapidement dans les derniers mouvements qui sont finalement assez résistants et le quatrième jour de travail, avant de partir pour d’autres obligations, je tombe la main dans le bac final, une marmite énorme ! Je ne comprends pas comment j’ai pu ne pas tenir une prise aussi grosse et me dis qu’au prochain essai, quand je reviendrai fraîche, je ferai la voie, c’est certain… Une semaine plus tard, j’ai un créneau de trois jours pour y retourner malgré une météo mitigée. Je suis confiante et pourtant je chute encore 2 fois la main dans cette dernière prise, énorme. Je comprends alors qu’il me manque un petit quelque chose, ce n’est pas qu’une histoire de fraîcheur… Ce truc c’est de mettre 4 doigts dans l’avant dernière prise et non pas 3 et ce n’est finalement pas si évident : je bute encore plusieurs fois à cet endroit pour arriver à régler ce détail… Et le dernier jour, après être tombée trois nouvelles fois dans les derniers mouvements, je place bien les doigts et ma tête fait la fin du travail pour tenir le bac final.
– Qu’en retiens-tu ?
Qu’il faut commencer par oser affronter ses rêves pour avoir une chance de les réaliser et souvent c’est ça le plus dur, en tout cas pour moi ! Qu’il faut penser autrement quand on bute sur un mouvement ou ne pas hésiter à se faire aider ! Et toujours se remettre en question, il y a souvent des petites choses à changer ou à améliorer pour avoir le déclic qui fait toute la différence !

– Why did you decide to show “Tête de gondole”?
“Tête de Gondole” was the route offered to female climbing stars during the 2008 Roc Trip at Boffi. I had participated in it, I was climbing in the 7c/+ at the time and seeing all the machines giving all to try to do this incredible line, it put stars in my eyes. It was far too hard for me at that time but it stayed in the back of my mind and the little seed of the dream was planted!
– How was the process?
I didn’t climb in Boffi until 2021 and in April, when I finally returned here and put my fingers in “Tête de Gondole”. This line impresses and as often, the hardest thing is the discovering!
The first goes were complicated. Obviously the route has not been done for years. Lichen covers the holds, there are very few traces of passage which could indicate which hold to use and the route on the proow is not always easy to choose between passing to the left or to the right of it. I stopped two quickdraws under the anchor, where the route really gets harder.
The next day, I go over the top, on a stating rope, to brush the holds, remove the lichen and imagine the sequences. The movements I had imagined work but I’m missing one. I arrive with the wrong hand on a key hold and I can’t find the solution to be there with the other hand.
New day and call a friend! It’s Pierre Soulé who will unlock my problem by giving me the key: a calf jamming behind the edge, telling me that this’s not the hardest move of the route. Phew! Clearly, I hadn’t thought of that!
Then the tries began, I quickly fell into the last movements which are finally quite resistant and on the fourth day of work, before leaving for other obligations, I fall with my hand in the final jug, a huge hole! I don’t understand how I couldn’t hold such a big hold and tell myself that on the next try, when I will come back fresh, I’ll do the route, that was clear in my mind…
A week later, I had a three-day slot to go back despite mixed weather. I was confident and yet I still drop my hand twice in this last hold, huge. I then understand that I’m missing a little something, it wasn’t only a story of freshness… This thing is to put 4 fingers in the penultimate hold and not 3 and that’s not finally not so obvious: I still failed several times in this move to manage to solve this detail… And the last day, after falling three more times in the last movements, I place my fingers correctly and my head finishes the job to hold the final jug.
– What do you remember?
That you have to start by daring to face your dreams to have a chance of realizing them and often that’s the hardest part, at least for me!
That you have to think differently when you struggle with a move or don’t hesitate to get help! And always questioning yourself, there are often little things to change or improve to have the click that makes all the difference!
