Troisième ascension de “Mejorando Imagen” à Raco de la Finestra, Margalef, par le mutant espagnol Jorge Diaz-Rullo ! Cette voie équipée par Iker Pou et libérée par Ramon Julian était restée non-répétée pendant 8 ans. Elle a été remise sous le feu des projecteurs le mois dernier par Alex Megos, avec une réévaluation à 9b.
Sur son compte Instagram, Jorge explique qu’il a cru faire vite la croix, mais après être tombé les doigts en sang au dernier mouvement dur au 5ème jour, il a eu besoin au final de 8 jours de travail pour répéter cette voie explosive et traumatisante sur mono et bidoigts. Il propose 9a+/b comme niveau, tout en annonçant que c’est sa voie la plus dure réalisée sans genouillère !

Third ascent of “Mejorando Imagen” in Raco de la Finestra, Margalef by Spanish beast Jorge Diaz-Rullo! This route, bolted by Iker Pou, was first ascended by Ramon Julian and remained unrepeated for 8 years. It was put under the spotlight last month with the second ascent by Alex Megos, and an upgrade to 9b.
On his Instagram account, Jorge explains that he was thinking he’d repeat the route quickly after his first tries, but due to falling on the last move of the route on his 5th day with bloody fingers, in the end this sharp and painful route on mono and twofinger pockets took him 8 days. Jorge proposes 9a+/b as a grade, announcing it is his hardest send without a kneepad!

Alex Megos n’a pas mis fin à sa parenthèse falaise de début de printemps avec son prolifique séjour à St-Léger. Le grimpeur allemand s’est rendu à Margalef il y a quelques semaines où il réalisé la seconde ascension de “Mejorando Imagen” dans le gros dévers central de La Finestra. La première ascension de cette voie très raide sur monos et bidoigts équipée par Iker Pou avait été réalisée par Ramon Julian en 2013 (en juillet !) après 3 jours de travail et proposée 9a. Située un peu plus à gauche que l’extrême “Perfecto Mundo”, “Mejorando Imagen” est une directe de départ du 9a classique de “Victima Perez” avec une difficulté assez concentrée sur 20 mètres de haut avant un mur final plus facile.
Après avoir été très proche lors de son 3ème jour de travail dans la voie, tombant dans le dernier mouvement dur de la voie, Alex a ensuite déchanté et est retombé dans le pas de bloc principal de la voie, un jeté sur un mono. C’est finalement le dernier jour sur place qu’Alex réussit la ligne à son 6ème essai de la journée, les doigts ensanglantés, en allant chercher les paires ! “Parfois, je ne comprends rien à l’escalade et au mental” conclut le grimpeur pro allemand. Pour cette dernière, Alex propose 9b et est curieux de voir ce que diront les prochains répétiteurs.

Alex Megos did not put an end to his early spring break with his prolific trip in St-Léger. The German climber went to Margalef a few weeks ago where he made the second ascent of “Mejorando Imagen” in the big central overhang of La Finestra. The first ascent of this very steep route on monos and two finger pockets, bolted by Iker Pou, was done by Ramon Julian in 2013 (in July!) after 3 days of work and proposed at 9a. Located a little more to the left of the famous “Perfecto Mundo”, “Mejorando Imagen” is a direct start of the classic 9a “Victima Perez” with a fairly concentrated difficulty over 20 meters high before an easier finish.
After coming close on his 3rd day, falling on the very last hard move of the route, Alex then failed on the main boulder crux, a jump to a mono. It was finally on his last day in Spain that Alex sent the line. On his 6th try of the day, with bloody fingers, the sending go was meant for cleaning the draws! “Sometimes I don’t understand anything about climbing and the mind” concluded the pro German climber. For the grade, Alex suggests an upgrade to 9b and is curious to see what the next repeaters will make of it.
