*** Matt Fultz ouvre “Brace for the Cure” V16 au Colorado sur le bloc de “Jade” : Le bloqueur américain annonce vidéo à la clé sur son compte Instagram la première ascension de ce 8C+ : un nouvel enchainement en gros dévers qu’il décrit comme sa première ascension la plus dure et son 2e problème le plus dur qu’il a réalisé. Il commence dans “Jade” pour traverser à gauche et remonter l’impressionnant panneau juste à côté du 8B+ classique. Un passage qui demande une précision au millimètre pour attraper des prises minuscules impossibles à ré-armer.

Toru Nakajima a répété cette semaine le panneau à arquées de Dai Koyamada “Epitaph” (initialement 8C, ouvert en 2009) à Hourai et propose une réévaluation du passage à 8C+. En effet, peu de temps après la seconde ascension du bloc par Ryuichi Murai en 2017 (vidéo ci-dessous), la prise clé avait cassé et le bloc déclaré quasi impossible. En mars dernier, Toru s’y colle et surprise, trouve le crux pas si infaisable que cela grâce à un gros talon gauche. Après 9 séances, il parvient à réaliser le crux du bloc dans l’enchainement mais se blesse légèrement au genou suite à l’essai, ayant réalisé un gros crochet de talon pour le réaliser. Après un peu de repos et avoir laissé passé une fenêtre de mauvais temps, Toru réalise enfin le bloc à la 13ème séance, après 4 séances supplémentaires. C’est donc la 3ème ascension du bloc et la 7ème proposition de ce niveau au Japon, qui devient un des endroits de la planète les plus fournis en matière de haute-difficulté en bloc naturel, en plus d’avoir de très nombreux et talentueux spécialistes. Toru Nakajima just repeated this week Dai Koyamada’s crimp testpiece “Epitaph” (originally graded 8C, opened in 2009) in Hourai with an 8C+ upgrade. Few times later Ryuichi Murai’s second ascent in 2017, the key hold broke and the boulder was known impossible. Last week Toru checked it and surprise, found another beta for the crux with an insane heelhook. After 9 sessions, he could stick this move from the beginning but fell just after. He needed 4 more sessions after a knee injury due to the hook and a bad weather window before completing it, at his 13th session. It’s the third ascent of the boulder and the 7th 8C+ boulder of Japan, a country with numerous hard bouldering problems in addition to tons of strong and talented climbers. To be continued…
Le grimpeur japonais Shinichiro Nomura vient de réaliser la première ascension d’un projet de longue date avec “Gakido”, qu’il propose à 8C+ bloc. Ce gros pavé (voire highball, il ne vaut mieux pas tomber à la fin !) se trouvant à Chigobutai dans le Nord-Est du Japon (proche de Fukushima) avait déjà été essayé par plusieurs forts grimpeurs, mais aucun n’avait pu réaliser la séquence du crux. A sa 2ème séance, il y a une semaine, Shinichiro a réussi les principales difficultés mais le crépuscule arrivant, il n’a pas eu le temps de gravir le bloc. C’est donc à sa 3ème séance, une semaine plus tard, qu’il aura réussi la première ascension de “Gakido”. Un bloc très court, qui devient une référence de la haute-difficulté en matière de bloc nippon avec “Floatin”, “United”, “Nayuta”, “Nexus” ou encore “Hallucination”. Shinichiro commente sur Instagram :
“En plus des prises dures à tenir, il y a vraiment dans ce bloc des placements plus difficiles comparé aux 8C que j’ai déjà réalisés. Mais j’ai réussi à m’en sortir grâce à des méthodes qui me sont propres. Alors que pas mal de blocs durs au Japon sont longs avec pas mal de mouvements difficiles à empiler, ici le bloc est court et bien teigneux. La forme du bloc est incroyable et je suis très heureux de l’avoir réalisé.”
Japanese climber Shinichiro Nomura just did the first ascent of a long time project, “Gakido” with a V16 proposition. This huge boulder/highball is located in Chigobutai in North-East of Japan (close to Fukushima). It was tried by many climbers but no one could move with the 4th hold and stick the crux. At his 2nd session on the boulder, Shinichiro climbed the crux but couldn’t finish the problem due to the night. He did the first ascent one week later at his 3rd session. A short boulder which is joining top level testpieces of the country like “Floatin”, “United”, “Nayuta”, “Nexus” or “Hallucination”. He comments on Instagram:
“In addition to bad holdings, i struggle with the worst positioning that i’ve never felt, compared with some over V15 projects. However i managed to send by my sense that i found. Although Japanese routes require a lot of moves and are hard to connect as a whole, this route is short and severe. but the shape of boulder is awesome so i’m really happy that I sent it.”

Juste avant Noël, la légende japonaise mettait fin à son projet qui l’aura occupé un an et lui donnait le nom de “Hanabi” (feu d’artifice) sur ce secteur de Futagoyama. La nouvelle était alors tombée, mais la vidéo vient de sortir et elle révèle toute la beauté de cette ligne à l’aide de belles images aériennes.
On notera un très esthétique pointe-contre-pointe pour clipper le premier point du dévers et une inversée retorse qui mène à une belle compression sous le relais en guise de crux.

A few daysbefore Christmas last year, the Japanese legend clipped the chains of his year-long project and named it ‘Hanabi’ (fireworks) at this Futagoyama sector. The news had reached us then, but the video has just come out and it shows the ethereal beauty of this route thanks to beautiful aerial footage.
Of particular note are the very aesthetically-pleasing bicycle to clip the first bolt in the overhang, as well as the tricky-looking undercling leading to a power-hungry compression move just below the anchor.
Lastly, and that is often what is fascinating with videos made from a different cultural standpoint, this film ends with an interview with Yuji in which we learn about his breakfast habits of champion and what he learns from the younger generations. His final message: love and enjoy, and make the most of your passion!

A Bleau, Olivier Lebreton, 45 ans, récent champion de France vétéran de bloc, tient toujours la grande forme. En ce début d’année 2022 Olivier vient de concrétiser deux projets qu’il avait parmi les blocs majeurs de la forêt, “Partage assis” 8B à Buthiers et “The Big Island” 8B+/C au Coquibus Rumont. Les deux réalisations sont présentées dans la vidéo ci-dessous.
Dave Graham, 40 ans, passe lui la saison hivernale en Suisse sur les blocs du Tessin avec une répétition du méga highball “Roadkill” 8C à Val Bavona juste avant Noël, une double croix avec notre frenchie Clément Lechaptois. Ce gros pavé ouvert en 2020 par Shawn Raboutou avait déjà vu précédemment des répétitions de Jimmy Webb et Kim Marschner. Dave (qu’on peut considérer comme un des acteurs majeurs du développement de l’escalade sportive US ces 20 dernières années avec Chris Sharma) semble toujours au sommet de son art. D’autres quadras, plus discrets serrent encore fort les prises… En Grande-Bretagne, Dave McLeod 43 ans, est de retour aux affaires après une blessure au coude. Dave vient de réaliser la seconde ascension de “Below zero” 8B+ à Rooftown, un projet qu’il avait depuis de longs mois et dont il s’est fait piquer la première par Will Bosi. Le processus de travail du bloc est décrit dans la vidéo ci-dessous.
Plus à L’Est, Bernd Zangerl est toujours à fond dans l’extrême, bossant dernièrement sur un projet vieux d’une décennie…Tout comme Klem Loskot, qui, aux dernières nouvelles, est toujours très actif bien qu’il soit silencieux sur les réseaux.
Evidemment traiter du sujet sans évoquer Dai Koyamada serait une erreur. Depuis la casse intentionnelle des prises de son 8C+ “Nayuta” au Japon en 2018 ainsi que de certains autres de ses projets et premières ascensions, le pionnier du bloc nippon, 45 ans, se fait plus discret concernant ses ouvertures. Dai a quand même réalisé plus d’une dizaine de premières ascensions de bloc dans le 8ème degré en 2021, et développe en concertation avec le gouvernement local plein de nouveaux blocs dans la zone très vaste d’Hinokage (à Kyushu, au Sud de l’Archipel) là où se trouve déjà “Eternal” qu’il avait établi en 2013. Il s’y trouve un potentiel de blocs durs encore très important, peut-être là où se trouve le futur du bloc naturel au Japon. A suivre !
Unstoppables! Despite the years, some bouldering pioneers now in their forties are still particularly active with recent developments.
In Font, Olivier Lebreton, 45, recent veteran French bouldering champion is still in great shape. This beginning of the year 2022 Olivier has just completed two projects he had among the major boulders of the forest, “Partage assis” 8B at Buthiers and “The Big Island” 8B+/C at the Coquibus Rumont. Dave Graham, 40 years old, is spending all his winter in Switzerland on the boulders of Ticino with a repeat of the “Roadkill” 8C mega highball in Val Bavona just before Christmas, a double send with our Frenchie Clément Lechaptois. This big pice of rock was opened in 2020 by Shawn Raboutou and had previously seen repeats by Jimmy Webb and Kim Marschner. Dave, who can be considered one of the major actors in the development of US sportclimbing over the past 20 years with Chris Sharma, always seems to be at the top of his game. Appreciate the quality of his climbing and his technical skills in the boulder in the video above. A delight!
Other climbers in their forties, more discreet, are still strong. In Great-Britain, 43-year-old Dave McLeod is back to affairs after an elbow injury. Dave just completed the second ascent of “Below zero” 8B+ at Rooftown, a project he had for many months. The first ascent of this line was stolen recently by Will Bosi. Dave’s process on this boulder is described in the video above too.
Further East, Bernd Zangerl is still climbing hard, lately working on a decade-old project…just like Klem Loskot, who, according to the latest news, is still very active in bouldering despite being silent on social media.
Obviously, dealing with this subject without mentioning Dai Koyamada would be a mistake! Since the intentional brake of the holds of his 8C+ “Nayuta” in Japan in 2018 as well as some of his other projects and first ascents, the 45-year-old Japanese bouldering pioneer has been more discreet about his developements. Dai has still made more than a dozen of bouldering first ascents in the 8th degree in 2021, and is developing in consultation with the local government many new boulders in the very large area of Hinokage (in Kyushu, South of Japan) where is already “Eternal” which he established in 2013. Here is still very important hard bouldering potential, perhaps where the future of outdoor bouldering in Japan is…To be continued !
*** Katie Lamb s’offre son 3ème 8B+ avec un classique de Buttermilks (Bishop) en Californie, “Direct North”. Cette ligne ouverte par le local des lieux Shawn Diamond en 2009 démarre assis au pied de l’imposante boule caractéristique des lieux de Grandma Peabody. C’est une sortie directe plus difficile du 8B classique de “Direction”. Le problème propose une escalade athlétique et assez longue (12 mouvements difficiles) dans un dévers sur arquées. C’est déjà le 3ème 8B+ bloc de la grimpeuse américaine de 24 ans qui avait réalisé l’été dernier les ultra-classiques “Jade” et “New Base Line”.
*** La collante se poursuit à Fontainebleau : Malgré des conditions un poil plus humides jeudi, Max Bertone (14 ans) a comme sa sœur profité de la collante cette semaine pour réaliser son second 8B bloc avec le magnifique “Saruman du bas” à Cuvier Sorcières (derrière le Rempart). Ce bloc assez récent (2017) mais majeur a été découvert et ouvert en départ débout par Guillaume Joubert (8A) avant que Nico Pelorson n’ouvre le départ bas dans la foulée. Un bloc magnifique très bleausard tout en sensations, compression, et talons sur une arête déversante. Voici la vidéo du run gagnant du jeune réunionnais qui avait déjà empoché le debout en 2020.
*** Brooke Raboutou dans le Tessin : On l’avait quittée à Red Rocks avec “Trieste”, son projet en bloc naturel de 2021, la championne franco-américaine découvre actuellement les blocs du Tessin en Suisse. Brooke vient de réaliser la première féminine de “La Proue” 8B classique de Cresciano, tout en blocages sur réglettes plates et pieds à plat…

*** Sticky conditions in Font continue: Despite a little bit of humidity on Thursday, Max Bertone (14 years old) could take profit of cold and quite dry conditions in Font like his sister. He just climbed his second 8B boulder with “Saruman du bas” in Cuvier Sorcières (a little bit behind Rempart). This recent gem was discovered and opened by Guillaume Joubert for the stand (2017, 8A) and Nico Pelorson added immediatly an 8B low start. A very beautiful boulder, Font style, smooth climbing, compression on sloper, heelhooks and some balancy moves on an overhanging arete. The video of the send in the video juste above.

Ryuichi Murai vient de libérer un nouveau bloc dur au Japon avec la première ascension de “Floatin” ou le “Launch pad project” dans le parc naturel de Mizugakiyama. Essayé par Tomoa Narasaki en personne, et resté invaincu, ce bloc en granite très pur de 6 mouvements propose deux furieux premiers mouvements très aléatoires où il n’y a quasiment pas besoin des pieds. Après un premier blocage Pan Güllich pendu sur 2 arquées pour aller chercher une main gauche en épaule en no foot, vient un incroyable derviche sans les pieds, suivi d’une horloge et d’un dernier puissant blocage pour arriver au réta.
Ryuichi commente : “Dernier jour meilleur jour ! Juste avant que le parc ne ferme, j’ai réalisé mon rêve avec le “Launch Pad Project”. Pendant le travail, j’ai lutté avec des problèmes mentaux et physiques… une peau des doigts qui s’endommageait vite à cause d’une granite abrasif, des conditions autour de 0°, 2 mouvements très aléatoires à faible pourcentage de réussite… Mais j’ai maintenant la satisfaction d’avoir accompli et surmonté quelque chose d’incommensurable. Cela a été un des meilleurs jours d’escalade de ma vie !”
Ryuichi Murai just freed a new hard line in Japan with the first ascent of “Floatin” V16 aka “Launch Pad Project” in Mizugakiyama park. Tried unsuccessfully by Tomoa Narasaki, this granite boulder is very pure, 6 moves with the 2 first moves with low-probability 2 first moves where you don’t have to use your feet. After hanging on 2 crimps and campusing into a left gaston, you have to do a bi cross before a powerful deadpoint move to the top of the boulder.
Ryuichi comments: “Last day best day! Just before the gate closed, realized my dream “Launch Pad project”! In the process of completion, struggled with many physical and mental factors.. severe finger skin damage from sharp granite, 0℃ cold condition, two low-probability savage cruxes..etc…but the sense of fulfillment gained after overcoming them is immeasurable. It was best day to find growth in my climbing life!”
It’s Ryuichi’s second V16 first ascent here after “Decided SD” 2 years ago and 3rd 8C+ first ascent with “Nexus” located in Shiobara.

Ryuichi Murai vient de libérer une nouveau gros projet et d’ouvrir “Nexus” à Shiobara, un enchainement de 40 mouvements qu’il propose 8C+. Autant le passage est sûrement d’une difficulté inouïe et le plus dur jamais réalisé par Ryuchi dans ce style, autant nous nous posons la question du sens de proposer une cotation bloc plutôt qu’une cotation voie pour définir le niveau d’un effort aussi long qui est clairement dans une filière résistance. Cette interrogation vaut aussi pour des blocs se voulant étalons de la haute-difficulté comme “Horizon”, “Wheel of Life”, “Wheel of Chaos” ou encore “Grand Illusion”. Mais peu importe. Voici ci-dessous le commentaire de l’intéressé laissé sur son compte Instagram :
“Finalement ! Je suis super heureux d’avoir fait mon grand projet “Uma extension”. La difficulté de cette ligne a été, outre le fait d’empiler un grand nombre de mouvements à haute intensité de force, d’accumuler du stress lié à des petits écueils et des erreurs qui affectaient grandement mes performances. Par conséquent, c’était un challenge non seulement pour l’endurance, mais aussi pour ce qui est de la réalisation parfaite des mouvements.
Après en avoir compris la logique, j’ai revu en profondeur tous les mouvements et je les ai répété jusqu’à ce que mon corps puisse les réaliser sans réfléchir. Hier, tous les morceaux se sont assemblés parfaitement, et un puzzle vieux de 5 ans a finalement été complété.
Le bloc fait 40 mouvements et je suis un peu troublé d’annoncer une cotation bloc. Cependant je propose V16 parce que je trouve cet enchainement plus dur que d’autres lignes du même style “Babel” (8C) à Shiobara et “In search of time lost” (8C) à Magic Wood. J’aimerais le comparer à “Grand Illusion” un jour. Au projet suivant !”
Ryuchi Murai is one of the strongest Japanese outside boulderers with Ryohei Kameyama or the legend Dai Koyamada, with plenty of 8C’s already under his belt and the first ascent of extreme boulders like “United” 8C+. Ryuichi has just freed a new big project and opened “Nexus” in Shiobara, a 40 movements line with an 8C+ grade proposition. As much as the passage is surely incredibly difficult and the hardest ever made by Ryuchi in this style, we ask ourselves the question of the meaning of proposing a bouldering grade rather than a rockclimbing grade to define the level of such a long effort which is clearly in a resistance testpiece. This question also applies to boulders that want to be standards of high-difficulty in the bouldering world like “Horizon”, “Wheel of Life”, “Wheel of Chaos” or even “Grand Illusion”. But whatever. Here is Ryuchi’s comment on his Instagram account:
“Finally! Super psyched to have done my long standing project “UMA extension”.
The difficulty in achieving this line was that in addition to the large number of moves and high strength, the accumulation of mental stress due to slight squeaks and mistakes greatly affected performance. Therefore, it was important not only for endurance but also for how sophisticated the movement could be.
After understanding the logic, I thoroughly reviewed all the moves again and practiced repeatedly until my body naturally started to move without thinking. And yesterday, all the pieces fit perfectly, and the five-year puzzle was finally completed.
This line consists of nearly 40 moves and I was worried about the boulder grade. However, I propose V16 because it felt harder than the similar lines “Babel” (V15/8C) in Shiobara and “In search of time lost (V15/8C)” in Magic Wood. Wanna compare it with “Grand Illusion” someday. On to the next project.“
Médaillée d’argent aux JO de Tokyo début août, la compétitrice japonaise Miho Nonaka a passé la suite de son été à Céüse auprès de son copain, le top grimpeur américain Sean Bailey. Miho a profité de son séjour pour prendre de l’expérience en milieu naturel, passant du niveau 7c+ à 8c+ en l’espace de quelques semaines, avec la réussite récente de “Mr Hyde” (8c+) !
Miho commente son séjour via son compte Instagram : “Pendant longtemps, depuis que j’ai décidé de me concentrer sur les compétitions, je n’ai jamais pensé pouvoir trouver un projet en escalade sportive qui me passionne autant et que j’aurais l’opportunité d’essayer. D’aussi loin que je me souvienne, 7c+ était la cotation la plus difficile que j’avais réalisé dehors. Donc je suppose que j’ai sauté un chiffre ! J’ai le sentiment du devoir accompli. Merci à Sean Bailey pour tout ce que tu m’as appris. J’ai appris un large éventail de choses de ce voyage ! “
A noter que les croix ne sont peut-être pas finies à Céüse, Sean Bailey étant tombé tout en haut de “Bibliographie” cette semaine. Peut-être une troisième ascension à venir très bientôt…
Olympic silver medalist in Tokyo this August, Japanese competitor Miho Nonaka spent the rest of her summer in Céüse with her boyfriend, the top American climber Sean Bailey. Miho took advantage of their stay to gain experience in a natural environment, going from 7c+ to 8c+ in the space of a few weeks, with the recent success of “Mr Hyde” (8c +)!
Here is what she said on her Instagram account: “For a long time since I decided to focus on competitions, I never thought that I would find a project in sport climbing that excites me so much and would actually get a chance to try. As far as I can remember, 7c+ was the hardest grade I’ve done in outdoor sport climbing. So I guess I skipped a number grade? Huge accomplishment I feel like.
