Une des voies les plus difficiles des US, “Flex Luthor”, vient d’être répétée par le grimpeur américain Carlo Traversi. Située au magnifique secteur perché Fortress of Solitude de Rifle (Colorado), “Flex Luthor” a été établie par Tommy Caldwell il y a près de 20 ans (en 2003) ; elle n’est autre que le premier 5.15 (9a+) des USA. La seconde ascension vient d’avoir lieu il y a quelques jours grâce à Matty Hong qui propose une réévaluation à 9b. C’est au tour de Carlo qui a travaillé la voie avec Matty de boucler aussi le projet, un enchainement extrêmement résistant de 30 mètres qui lui aura donné du fil à retordre. C’est la 4ème voie en 9ème degré pour Carlo, un grimpeur polyvalent capable d’éclats en falaise (on lui doit la première ascension d’Empath), en bloc avec une répétition de “Creature from the black lagoon” 8C+, en trad avec “Meldown” 8c+ ou en big wall avec une répétition de “Magic Mushroom” à El Cap. Un film sur l’ascension de “Flex Luthor” sortira prochainement.

One of the most difficult routes in the United States, “Flex Luthor”, has just been repeated by American climber Carlo Traversi. Located in the magnificent and remote sector Fortress of Solitude of Rifle (Colorado), “Flex Luthor” was established almost 20 years ago (in 2003) by Tommy Caldwell. It is none other than the first 5.15 (9a+) in the US. The second ascent took place just a few days ago thanks to Matty Hong, who proposes an upgrade to 9b. It was soon Carlo’s turn, who worked the route with Matty, to also complete the project, an extremely resistant 30-meter route which gave him a hard time. This is the 4th route in the 9th degree by Carlo, an all-rounder climber capable of feats in rock climbing (we owe him the first ascent of “Empath”), in bouldering with a repetition of “Creature from the black lagoon” 8C +, in trad climbing with “Meltdown” 8c+, or big walling with a repeat of “Magic Mushroom” on El Cap. A film on the repeat of “Flex Luthor” will be released shortly.

Matty Hong vient de boucler la seconde ascension de “Flex Luthor” au secteur Fortress of Solitude de Rifle (Colorado), le même secteur qui abrite le 9a connu de “Kryptonite” (premier 9a des USA, 1999).
“Flex Luthor” a été établi par Tommy Caldwell il y a près de 20 ans (en 2003), elle n’est autre que le premier 5.15 (9a+) des USA et la voie la plus difficile des USA au début du siècle, avant que Chris Sharma ne libère “Jumbo Love” (9b) à Clark Mountain (Californie) en 2008. Au début des années 2000, “Flex Luthor” était même une des propositions les plus dures au Monde avec “Biographie”, “Akira” ou encore “Chilam Balam”. Ce challenge très difficile de 30 mètres de haut remonte un généreux dévers et est truffé de pas de bloc. Matty Hong qui a passé de longues sessions à essayer la voie en compagnie de Carlo Traversi depuis un an vient de clipper le relais et il propose de réévaluer la voie à 9b. Compte tenu de son expérience en falaise (” Fight or flight” (9b), les classiques “La Rambla” ou “Papichulo”, …) nous pouvons lui faire confiance.
“C’est indéniable que la voie a évolué depuis toutes ces années, mais je crois que la majorité de la ligne est restée intacte” commente t-il sur son compte Instagram.

À voir si Carlo Traversi qui essaie toujours la voie arrivera aussi à vaincre cette voie extrême prochainement et confirmer la difficulté.

Matty Hong just did the second ascent of “Flex Luthor” at Fortress of Solitude, Rifle, Colorado, the same place where the first US 9a “Kryptonite” is located (FA Tommy Caldwell, 1999). “Flex Luthor” was established by Tommy Caldwell too 18 years ago (FA in 2003), it was the first 5.15 in the US and the hardest sportclimbing proposition before “Jumbo Love” (Clark Mountain, California) by Chris Sharma in 2008. The Caldwell route was one the hardest sportclimb propositions at the beginning of the century with “Biographie”, “Akira” or “Chilam balam”. This very difficult challenge is 30 meters long through a big overhang involving a lot of bouldery moves. Matty Hong, who had been trying it for a while (last year) proposes to grade it 5.15b (9b). With his vast rockclimbing experience (“Fight or flight” 9b as well as mega classic “La Rambla”, “Papichulo” and so on) we can trust him!
“It’s undeniable some aspects of the route have changed over the years, however I believe the majority of the climb has stayed intact”, Matty added on his Instagram account.

Carlo Traversi is currently trying the beast to claim the 3rd ascent. We hope he will clip the anchor soon and give his opinion.
